PlayStation 3 System Software Update v3.40 Available Now

Eric Lempel's Avatar + Posted by Eric Lempel on Jun 28, 2010 // VP, Sony Network Entertainment

UPDATE: Thanks for all of the feedback. Just a quick update, 3.40 has been released. In addition, PlayStation Plus is now available in the PlayStation Store.

We’re thrilled to hear that many of you are excited about the five star rating feature. This feature is retroactive for all of your PlayStation Store activity, so you can jump into the store right now and start rating all of your past purchases. Look for a “Rate” button on the product pages.

The PSN App on Facebook is also live. You can find it here: http://apps.facebook.com/playstation.

Hi everyone, once again we’re adding new features to the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system via firmware update to ensure we’re bringing you the best, most comprehensive entertainment experience possible. PS3 system software update (v3.40) will be available soon, adding the PlayStation Plus subscription, enhancements to the connection between your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts and more. Additionally, we’ll be launching system software update (v6.30) for the PSP (PlayStation Portable) system simultaneously with PS3 system software update (v3.40), adding PlayStation Plus compatibility as well as other new features.

We’ve gone ahead and provided a few highlights from PS3 firmware update (v3.40) below:

  • PlayStation Plus: PlayStation Network users will be able to purchase membership to PlayStation Plus; a new subscription service on the PlayStation Network that provides you with new options to expand and enhance your gaming experience and enable you to gain an exclusive set of features and content. Friendly reminder, all of you PlayStation Network users will continue to have free access to PlayStation Network’s unmatched and expanding suite of new and exclusive features while PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive and expanding set of gaming features, content and functionality.
  • Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows you to upload, browse and comment on photos on Facebook and Picasa Web Album. You can also opt to share your photos between your PlayStation Network friends as well as print photos from Photo Gallery.
  • Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables you to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.
  • Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate the PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
  • Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at 2 hours, providing you with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system.

In addition to the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PlayStation Network application on Facebook.com will be made available. This builds upon what was previously launched with Trophies and the ability to publish purchases from the PlayStation Store. Now you can further integrate your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts with this new application. The application allows you to display your PlayStation Network profile on your Facebook account, find out which of your Facebook friends have a PSN account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view your PSN friends’ online status and add the PlayStation Network application tab to your Facebook user profile.

Add Friend Friends list PSN Tab

We’re very excited to be able to provide you with continued system software upgrades, which ensure your PS3 and PSP systems remain compelling offerings for years to come. Ummm I like the power features, they should have been there to begin with. As for the facebook garbage, it’s a waste of time.

The rating is a good option if your un-sure of a title.

As far a the plus thing. It makes no sense, we have downloadable content, add on’s and so forth that you have to pay for anyway.

If you want to get some real attention, change the menu sceme’s… When I first bought my ps3 I was dissapointed to see I was looking at a PSP menu.

sweet update from Sony. and no, not ALL of us are crying about cross-game chat. i am happy that the PSN is a quiet and civil space to play my games. have any of you tried to play on Live recently? you get yelled at by 8 year olds that don’t know how to play the game, and then yelled at by their parents when they retaliate. so, comparisons to Live and saying we’re lacking is bunk to me, and if i have a friend that it playing another game, i really don’t have a need to talk to him.

the only thing i would ask, and i keep hoping for a response on this one, is the old Task Switching back. i have tens of thousands of songs on my PS3, so if i’m doing a slideshow of my thousands of pictures and want to play some music, it’s a pain in the behind to scroll all the way back to the top to get to the play control, and still have to his the PS button to switch songs. it was SOOOOOOOOO much easier to have the controls based on which tab you were on when you switch to the screensaver. the music player control is fine in games like Monsters, but the previous functionality out of game was much, much better and smoother.

This is another ver. of Qore (which really sucks!) I ‘m trying to make since of the weak update’s we get from sony! I know it’s free but if the they are going to be like this you can keep them! Sony is wasting my time… C’mon son! you know you can do better than this… I’ll pay for better service but not for this Plus crap! You got to come better than some free games(which you lose if you don’t cont. the service) and other stuff! Xbox live will cont. to be a better buy until you do the right thing! Cross chat!!!!!! all the other stuff is minor #$%*! I can’t defend you guy’s anymore!

@198 BloodyCow, my point is that if you want XBox Live, you should have an XBox. If you want a clone of XBox Live, you should get an XBox. If you want more functionality out of your console, then why simply copy what others have done? The functionality is already there in the other console.

I honestly hope they make you pay for PSN+ if you want Cross Game Chat.

I mean seriously, only a fraction of people have headsets, and only a fraction of people who have headsets care about XGC. Make them pay and get soem additional income, Sony!

I’m not too excited about this update. I don’t think too many people care for the new Subscription sony is providing to it’s customers. Why would i want to continue paying for a game addon or any other content if i could just pay a one time fee and not have to worry about a subscription? I don’t think game demos and avatars are worth that hassle. What about adding a Sound Notification Alert to messages received? That would be something useful. All in all i think Sony is just out to make money and not give the people what they want. From their bogus Bravia 3D TVs (Which costs nearly $4,000 and consumers have just gotten into the HD era of things) to their $150 3D glasses.

sounds like a pretty decent update, but my question on mind is still this. WHEN can we have an update that allows us to Play MUSIC and GAMES at the same time when we want to? I’m not a 360 fan but that seems to be the best advantage the 360 has over the PS3 so far. and its kind of disappointing

I’m not sure why I’d need a video editor unless more games (or the PS3 itself) will start incorporating capture ability. No, this doesn’t require any hardware. I’ve got programmes on my computer that record my screen without hardware. I will hold off on PSN+. I want to see exactly what it gives me that’s worth paying for.

Wow. I just bought a Playstation 3 last week and when i downloaded this, I about messed my pants.. wait, i actually did.. crap. Sony’s updated gave us a FREE video editor for FREE. True, i will never use this.. but the point is, its software they gave us for free, at no cost. “My console has a video editor and yoursss doon’t.” I have owned 3 xbox 360′s and during my stay there, They have never done anything like this. All Microsoft did for me was give my broken consoles that RROD and all updates that come like this you, HAVE to pay for. I’m glad sony is going for + In the furture, this will improve ps3 and hopefully bring more updates that kick a**. THanks Sony and keep up the good work.

So when are gamers getting any features relevant to them like making parties outside of game lobbies and launch into what ever games they want like the competition. Random media updates DO NOT benefit gaming on a gaming console.

Well first off the Facebook photo thing is pretty cool. Next on the list is the video thing I thought it would be like being able to record your own games like while in game go to the XMB and hit record or something that would have been cool then you like edit it then upload it to youtube. I dont know I tried doing that it quit the game andI even tried it with Ragdoll Kungfu the game that actually lets you save video files to your HDD and You can actually upload to youtube but i tried editing it and it said something about copy right i know that all the videos i download from the store are like copy rightable but i just thought maybe it would let me edit a game video if someone actually knows a game that you can record or if its just a ps3 video editing soft ware were you actually have to make videos on a camera and then connect the camera to the ps3 then edit and upload. I dont know please someone clarify me on this and also if you do make a future update to thgis make it able to record games and edit them!!!!!!!!

MKV support – nonexistant, SACD support – removed, OtherOS – removed, BC – removed, XGC – nonexistant. What do we get? a broken farcebook app nobody asked for, and no the shills who work for sony dont count. We also get PSN minus, paying for demos, we already have demos, paying for games which go away if subscriptions lapses, thats not “free games” thats called rentals, we have video stores & gamefly for that. Oh yeah we get a video editor which again nobody asked for. Best of yet we get more harassment & lies as the CULT of SONY launches yet another inquisition against its own customers. This is why basing a business model on a totalitarian regime is at best completely inept. Best thing we can hope for at this point is if some other multinational acquires SCEA/SCEA/SCEI & completely restructures it.

@Ryoko – You dont know that SCE really doesn’t exist anymore right? Its the Sony Networked Products Division.

Anyways, I dont mind the new features. It fills some gaps of the removal of OtherOS. PSN+ is useless. 5-star rating, I think people actually did ask for this.

Also, the one thing I question with most of you cross-chat whiners is did you not read that its not possible to have cross-chat in older games? Figure they cannot implement it in CODMW2, Killzone 2, MAG, etc.

@762….I totally agree about how you used to be able to press the ps button while listening to music, scroll over to the internet or whatever, and hit the ps button again, giving you control of the internet browser. Allowing you to easily change the songs you are listening to.

Also when you used to be able to -be watching a video on the xmb, and press the ps button, bringing up the xmb menu, and the video would actually keep playing in the background!

Originally the cell processor in the ps3 was supposed to be able to control many things in your home with the ps3. Shows how Sony loves to actually take away features…

Sorry Sony, but I sometimes the truth hurts..

That wasn’t SCEA who promised LBP but SCEE. In case you aren’t aware, SCEA is Sony Computer Entertainment America and SCEE is Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. You can’t hold SCEA to promises that SCEE made since SCEE isn’t concerned with the states.
