UPDATE: Thanks for all of the feedback. Just a quick update, 3.40 has been released. In addition, PlayStation Plus is now available in the PlayStation Store.

We’re thrilled to hear that many of you are excited about the five star rating feature. This feature is retroactive for all of your PlayStation Store activity, so you can jump into the store right now and start rating all of your past purchases. Look for a “Rate” button on the product pages.

The PSN App on Facebook is also live. You can find it here: http://apps.facebook.com/playstation.

Hi everyone, once again we’re adding new features to the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system via firmware update to ensure we’re bringing you the best, most comprehensive entertainment experience possible. PS3 system software update (v3.40) will be available soon, adding the PlayStation Plus subscription, enhancements to the connection between your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts and more. Additionally, we’ll be launching system software update (v6.30) for the PSP (PlayStation Portable) system simultaneously with PS3 system software update (v3.40), adding PlayStation Plus compatibility as well as other new features.

We’ve gone ahead and provided a few highlights from PS3 firmware update (v3.40) below:

  • PlayStation Plus: PlayStation Network users will be able to purchase membership to PlayStation Plus; a new subscription service on the PlayStation Network that provides you with new options to expand and enhance your gaming experience and enable you to gain an exclusive set of features and content. Friendly reminder, all of you PlayStation Network users will continue to have free access to PlayStation Network’s unmatched and expanding suite of new and exclusive features while PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive and expanding set of gaming features, content and functionality.
  • Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows you to upload, browse and comment on photos on Facebook and Picasa Web Album. You can also opt to share your photos between your PlayStation Network friends as well as print photos from Photo Gallery.
  • Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables you to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.
  • Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate the PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
  • Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at 2 hours, providing you with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system.

In addition to the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PlayStation Network application on Facebook.com will be made available. This builds upon what was previously launched with Trophies and the ability to publish purchases from the PlayStation Store. Now you can further integrate your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts with this new application. The application allows you to display your PlayStation Network profile on your Facebook account, find out which of your Facebook friends have a PSN account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view your PSN friends’ online status and add the PlayStation Network application tab to your Facebook user profile.

    CHAT

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • XScreamingEagleX

    @aquastorm

these features are not from demands, they wanted it to be added.

they are not useless, maybe to you it is…

everyone should appreciate the features sony adding for FREE.

now deal with it or shut up.

  • hey, is psn plus free for us to try out?

  • Playstation Plus!!

  • I like the five star rating system. Good Idea.

  • @238:

Yeah? Find me a link with Sony confirming that buddy…
    It better be free…

  • nice one how much is gonna cost if it’s gonna cost????

  • CROSS GAME CHAT OMG HOLY EFF HURRY UP AND ADD IT SONY YOU LAZY CHUNKS.

  • Wow, this is the real deal. A pretty good update for sure! They’re really listening to the fans. Wonder if it’s “share”‘s doing. Well, I hope so =D.

Facebook integration is the biggest thing for me. It’s really nice to find your friends that have a PS3. I mean, it’s not like this informations pops in a lot of conversation. Maybe when you’re yong but I’m 25 and so are my friends, lol.

Video edition is great too, I’ll surely test by editing sony’s press conference part 2 to publish the Kevin Butler’s epic speech, lol.

Great idead for the pictures too. Share and facebook integration.

And I’m hoping the PSN will be easier and faster to connect to, since they said they were upgrading this too.

    Really nice! =D

  • i hope in the rating system when we leave a comment under a rating to state why we gave it a bad/good rating. As for video/uploading feature, and facebook enhancements are pretty good too, what i’m aiming for in the near future is to see more downloadable application off the ps store kind of ilke mlb.tv, iplayer, and things of that nature.

as for folks pissing and moaning about XGC if you want it that bad hop on another system and shut it, cuz if u were to get u’ll complain about it for the fact its not as unique the 360 or somethin else, i’m so not lookin forward to XGC

  • @114 its been hinted at that we will get xmb intergrated Netflix once MS’s exclusivity clause is over some time this fall.

  • please guys……. CROSS GAME CHAT…….. :)

  • More useless stuff nobody asked for. You guys are so out of touch with your customers, it’s hilarious now at this point in the life cycle of your hardware.

  • How about giving us back the Linux support that you stole with the last “up”date?

I won’t be buying any Sony games or content (or the laughable “Plus” features) until you do.

  • Do this and i’ll be happy, http://bit.ly/cTn6RG , oh and did u improve the browser in this update, probably not, and the person above me, #50, it’s not being a clone of 360, it’s including an important feature. That’s like saying ps3 shouldn’t play games, other things already do that. Should i rely on my phone for games? no. Should i buy an xbox or run up my phone bill by having conference calls all the time just so i can have cross game chat? no. although voice msgs seem like a copy of the 360’s feature cause it’s not as coventional but its still a nice feature and i would still like to see it in playstation plus. pls include cross game chat and at least some of these features in the next update http://bit.ly/cTn6RG

  • could the Plus sign look like this?

    http://i48.tinypic.com/2mnei4y.png

  • even more useless icons in the xmb?

  • I love the ratings system, and hope it can be used to recommend things based upon a deep analysis of other people’s similar ratings and trophy completion status.

Please, please, please fix the browser. The blog and playstation.com itself barely displays in it properly at this point. Fix it, or just remove the embarrassing thing.

  • @250

No free trial. Only pay membership.

  • is the FB app available yet? Where’s the link? How about adding friends, right from playstation.com like another certain console?

  • Yea!! Nice update.

Private chat will come soon guys. Give time to sony to release psn+, after that we will see many new feature…. I wish…

  • @239 because it comes with PSN+

  • rly like the “Five Star Rating Support”. that is very usefull. ps+ looks kinda interresting too. keep it up, psn is getting better every year.

  • Please give us the ability to upgrade to a master account!

I created my PSN account when I was under 18, I am now over 18 and would really like to have a master account so I can participate and purchase PSN Plus!

  • ThreeLeggedFreak

Is the 5 star rating system only for games or for Video and Comics as well? Let’s hope it’s the latter.

  • awesome comment #260 & #261 u guys are so out of touch w/ ur consumers, do u ppl pay attention to ur “share” thing, none of my ORIGINAL ideas go up but extremely rediculous ideas do, oh and serioulsy read this http://bit.ly/cTn6RG (not trying to troll i just think of more things after i post, sorry)

  • Great update Eric! We need some increased friend space. :p

  • I guess along with buying exclusive Netflix built in software, Microsoft bought exclusive cross game chat rights SONY? You guys suck!

  • So this is happening tomorrow correct?

  • OMG, why no Arabic language support? we are waiting for this. :(

  • oh joy more useless Facebook garbage. how about adding games to the us servers quicker so the trophies you earn show up on Playstation.com (like ModNation) & as somebody else requested the ability to get rid of games in your trophy list that only show 0%.

  • Great update Eric/SONY, im happy and appreciative. Please update the browser though, surely it cant be that hard to impliment a better flash player and whatnot. Within the last 5 weeks dozens of wesites (including Youtube) have fallen incompatible with the ps3’s web browser. Sorry but youtube XL is horrible. Cheers Eric!!

  • I don’t care at all for FB. And I’ll not complaint about CrossGame Chat because I’m really happy with my console and his free online service, I’ll NEVER pay just to have access to play online games on a console that I paid numerous hundred dollars for and for wich I buy games made by Sony, wich is a way to pay them, by buying accessories too (extra controlers, bluetooth etc).

I don’t get where you guys have read that Cross Game Chat will come with “Plus” later on, I’m pretty sure thats not true, if it comes one day it’ll be free, pretty sure about it. It’s not something that’ll make ME pay for “Plus” anyway as I explained above, I like Sony, really, I like how they handled the PS1, PS2 and PS3 so far (like the Play/Create/Share genre, cool and innovatives PSN titles etc), I’m really happy with it, buy I’ll not pay just to play online.

  • This should be interesting to see I am excited, finally a real update for the PS3 I was getting worried for a second.

  • Awesome new photo and video features!!! Thanks.

  • I will not buy “PlayStation Plus”, because no Arabic support until now, we vote for this from a couple few years.

  • so xgc is the top vote getter on blog share with 14000

that means either 14ooo psn user out of 30 million plus or maybe 1000 with 14 accounts each who want it that badly
either way that’s an extremely small percentage . not even enough to be a statistic really .

stop whining that psn isn’t exactly like the other system and be glad it’s unique and offers a more diverse lineup of features

ps3 isn’t just a game console for most owners , it’s an entertainment system

  • Cool update, looking forward to the Video Uploader- might make usage of my Eye camera more that way. Facebook might be nice, I’ve been enjoying posting my trophies on my status, although I’m not sure if any of my friends there actually own PS3s beyond the ones I’ve already added to my PSN friends list. XD

However. I’m one of the MANY who are STILL waiting on Cross Game Chat! At least cull the masses by throwing us a bone as to whether or not you’re ACTUALLY working on it? Give us a “window” as to when you’ll get it done (or not?). Please, with a cherry on top!?

Also, PS3 browser fixes might also be nice. I’d love to be able to play internet radio stations on my PS3 aside from Pandora one of these days, and pages are breaking in the browser nowadays as well…..

  • Nice update. We should also be able to give reputation ratings to players online.

  • Meanwhile in SONY head quearters:
Tretton: So, Erick, what new feature should we implement with this new firmware?
Eric: Well sir, Cross Game Chat is the most required feature, millions of people are asking for, so we should give them facebook and video editing instead!! wohoo so much fun!
Tretton: Wait what? didn’t you say Cross Game Chat is what people want?
Eric: Yes sir, but you see, people don’t know what they want, only I know what these peasants want, and they want useless features!!!
Tretton: well if you say so, ohh can you bring me some cokes here? Kaz and I are playing RIIIIIIIDDDDDDGGGGEEEE RAAAAACERRRRR!!!!!

  • When are you adding OtherOS back to my console that advertised it would have OtherOS? Funny how updates are supposed to add or fix features.

  • “Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate the PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.”

Awesome. PSN is now getting one of the few things I thought was a lot better about the Xbox Live store. Now add more demos for PSN games.

  • So, other than PS+, what else will be in the PSP 6.30 update? Any of the other stuff mentioned here? (would be really nice to see that video editor on the PSP)

  • How about they work on making YouTube work.

  • Honestly, this sounds like one of the most promising PS3 firmware updates I’ve ever read about. Almost makes me want a PS3, then I recall how the other OS option was removed.

Also gives me hope the PSP will receive an update that’s as extensive, seems like there are plenty of areas to work on (finally a way to make/delete playlists from the PSP, ability to delete folders regardless of content so you can get rid of an album from the PSP without using a PC.) I’ve low expectations thanks to Playstation Plus essentially being PS3 owner only, and the weak PSN updates since about December of last year, but I’ve got hope.

  • This is a pretty big update if you ask me. Thanks for all the hard work and giving us all these features for free. A majority of the update is socially focused but nonetheless, it’s welcomed. Now focus on an update that enhances our gaming experience.

  • nice update, the video editor will come in handy thanks
looking forward to more cool apps on the ps3
maybe someday i’ll be able to unplug my pc and only use the ps3
that would be some major power saving right there
    ;)

  • Firstly, it’s good to see that the Playstation + isn’t the end of none subscribers getting firmware updates. If that were the case I would not have signed up to the PS+ now I am going to when I get my next pay cheque.

Secondly, I can see some nice touches in there. The facebook PSN stuff will be helpful and I like the idea of the video editing, though I would have more use for it if I could capture in game footage directly to the PS3.

Finally, can anyone tell me what the point of having “Share” is if the top suggestion that over 22,000 people have begged for is simply not going to make it into the firmware.

It wouldn’t be so bad if you guys would break radio silence and just announce when you are aiming to get it or if you have decided not to use it all, telling us that and why get rid of this constant disappointment. I mean think about it, you just added lots of cool stuff to the PSN and lots of us are too busy being disappointed by the lack of cross game voice chat. If you just tell us that it’s never coming at least we won’t be expecting it.

  • Wowza! If you guys added a video editor and a uploader, I would hope the PSP got a proper music setup so that it doesn’t just read by filename. Come on Sony! I bought a PSP-1000 and it read music in order of filename.

The PSPgo can’t organize music any better than it’s bulky and old counterpart, which is unacceptable. I really hope that by paying for Plus, I will be supporting firmware development of PS3 AND PSP.
