Hulu Plus Streams Its Way to the PS3

Susan Panico's Avatar + Posted by Susan Panico on Jul 14, 2010 // Sr. Director, PlayStation Network

Continuing our goal to provide the most content-rich entertainment platform in the living room to the PlayStation community, I’m excited to announce that beginning today, the preview of Hulu Plus is available on the PlayStation 3 in the U.S., the first and only console with dedicated gaming functionality that will offer Hulu Plus this year.

If you don’t know, Hulu Plus is Hulu’s new subscription service offering full current season runs of hit TV programs from ABC, FOX and NBC, adding even more premium video content to the more than 23,000 movies and TV episodes already available on the PlayStation Store.

So how do you get Hulu Plus? Well, starting today, a select group of PlayStation Plus subscribers can gain access to a preview version of Hulu Plus. All PlayStation Plus subscribers may download the free Hulu Plus application from the PlayStation Store and, within it, request an invitation to the exclusive preview. If you are accepted, you can access Hulu Plus for an additional $9.99 per month (the fee that Hulu is charging for all Hulu Plus subscribers) and start enjoying its library of television shows and movies from nearly 150 leading content companies streamed on demand in HD.

Hulu Plus for PS3

As Hulu Plus becomes generally available in the coming months, all PlayStation 3 users in the United States will be able to download and subscribe to the full Hulu Plus service and it will also be available on wide range of Sony Electronics Internet-connected entertainment devices, including select BRAVIA TVs and Blu-ray Disc players.

Did not really think of that, but the Remote Play option(remotely connect to your PSP to your PS3 over your network or internet) via streaming would be a boon for Playstation Portable users since there is no download involved when it comes to Hulu & Hulu Plus.

i dont have my code from hulu yet but i downloaded the app and played some previews/clips..

2 things.

1. why is the blu ray remote red headed stepchild of sony? it doesnt work with qore and it doesnt work with hulu plus. why not? i bought an official sony remote figuring these features would definitely work with future sony apps etc.. but instead it barely does anything. the blu ray remote is a scam.

2. why sony, why do i have to go to websites and hunt down boxes to enter codes. there is a browser built in to the ps3. the ps3 has access to the internet. why not make it link to the app or service that will authenticate my ps3? is this suddenly 1998? should i prepare for the y2k millennium bug? maybe you should mail me the codes in a cassette and i can play them in my sony walkman cassette player and i’ll listen for the code. This authentication system makes no sense.. especially if you have your ps3 and your computer in different rooms.

3. why cant i press select and get video info?

4. tell hulu to hurry up with my code.. i want to throw my money away but they wont let me.

sigh.

thank you for letting me rant. i needed that.

I am not a PS+ subscriber nor do I plan to be. So, in a few months when Hulu Plus becomes available to all PS3 users (instead of the select group), will I be forced to sign up/pay for PS+ just to access it? or will I be able to get Hulu Plus with my normal PSN membership?

This needs to be included at no additional cost for PS plus subscribers, period. If Sony really wants to sell PS Plus this is a must have feature…again, AT NO ADDITIONAL COST.

hulu’s pricing has nothing to do with sony. sony isn’t going to cover a $120 a year bill for hulu plus for people who gave sony $50. a discount would be nice, yeah, but i don’t expect it.

One major suggestion I have: please please PLEASE make this Remote Play compatible with the PSP/PSP Go!

I’m already thinking about getting rid of Cable TV altogether now that Netflix & Hulu is on the PS3 so this one little request is all i’m asking for. I REALLY hope my PSP Go can get the Remote Play love with the final version of the Hulu Plus app and hopefully Netflix *if* it ever makes to becoming disc-less.

I beg of you guys to do this! Once more, PLEASE!

My many cents –

The Hulu Plus subscription thing (debacle?) has been in the news for awhile now, $9.99 per month WITH ads. Most people seem to think Netflix is a better way to go.

I tried the PS3 Plus app and the video looked great for about 12 minutes and then choppy then nada. Tried 3 different programs and they would barely start and then just stop. Gave up.

Trying to watch White Collar on Hulu now on my PC and it only has 288p as an option and even that isn’t going very smoothly.

So, either Hulu is overrun by PS3 Plus users or Hulu Plus subscribers or they are dropping non-subscribers to 288p.

Note: both my PS3 and PC are wired so Wi-Fi isn’t an issue.

The PS Plus was an early birthday gift, think I’ll manage to get my $3.50 a month out of it, but I can’t imagine paying Hulu $10 a month for ads.

i fail to even see the incentive to even having hulu on psn atm

where’s the incentive to even have it through ps+ ? we paid 50 bucks for a year to try a preview and eventually pay 10 more bucks to use a service that still has ad’s? just give the ppl that want netflix a application based service cuz clearly this isnt worth the hassle

how drunk we’re they at the meeting when they decided this was a great idea?

me im lookin forward to these “priority beta invites” more than anything

This is the BIGGEST rip off I have EVER SEEN for PlayStation 3 users! Normally I refrain from posts like this, but, my god! $10 a MONTH!!?? For Hulu?? $10 A MONTH!! To watch ads!? That’s $120 A freaking year man!!

Why on earth would I pay $120 a year to watch Hulu, when I can use PlayOn (which cost me $20 thank you), and I can use Hulu on my PS3 for FREE forever!

Even better, after getting PlayOn I discovered how lame Hulu actually is and started using the VeeHD plugins and Crackle…etc.. and get 0 commercials, with better quality videos and a much more vast selection. With PlayOn I can watch ALL Hulu like channels on my tv streamed to my PS3. Forever, for free. All I had to do was buy PlayOn.

Hulu Plus @ $10 a month is a flat out SCAM!!

this is a nice feature for playstation3 but they could have at least made it a FREE trial for the PREVIEW, why would i pay $10 to PREVIEW something? thats wierd, and when it do arrive officially for the system ps+ customers should at least get a discount on it for $5 a month or something, but with this $10 a month fee i can already see this not going anywhere, i like having my ps+ service but an extra $10 a month for a service i can watch free on my pc and i got free cable in my house i think im going to have to pass on this one sony, sorry :(

I think I will stay with netflix on this one. $11 a month for AD FREE instant streaming of HD movies and TV shows plus the optional Blu-Ray movie access that is sent first class mail and received next day after choosing it seems like a better choice in my opinion.

I am also sticking with Netflix. Sure Hulu gets the episodes sooner but I’m a patient person.

The people complaining to Sony about this don’t understand how Apps work, it’s not Sony use should be complaining too. And the access to PS+ users is the same as it would be for the X-box, GET USED TO IT. These services will make there way to you, however we get the first crack at them and that is one of the reasons were paying $50 and you’re not.

Ok I couldn’t careless about all these features been added, all I want is-

1. A party system.(like XBL)

2. Cross game voice chat.(like XBL)

3. A better UI than the current PSN UI. Sending messages while in-game should be made easier and faster.

I downloaded the Hulu Plus app, and saw some of the previews, including Ugly Betty Pilot and the full-length Supersize Me. The quality on both was amazing. Better than streaming netflix on my laptop and far better than netflix on the ps3.

And y is everyone complaining about the ads! People it’s about 15 secs where the commercials would normally take place.

And really $10/month, vs what ever ur paying cable/sat! People get real.

In addition, HuluPlus will offer far more content then the free Hulu Service. Including entire seasons, not just the last 3 episodes of the current season.
Really, spend the $10 bucks, and stop spending hours looking for free streams that will bombard ur laptop w/ viruses and will still look like crap anyways.

Here’s a suggestion…make that available for when ya watching Blu Rays as well.

Talk ta tha higer ups man, n let em know it’s a convience for us!
Can’t begin ta tell u how many times I’ve missed out gaming with my friends because they thought I was offline.

It’s like, as soon as I pop that movie in, they get online, then a couple hours later I take the movie out..n they’ve just gotten offline, leaving me an msg saying they were looking for me.

It’s insane!
Anyway..it’s just a suggestion if u guys were thinking about adding something kewl to the next FW Update.

Game on!

i would pay for this. i’ve been using hulu since 2008 and although the main reason i love it is, or was, due to its free service, the service is why i would pay. plus, i havent been subscribed to cable in over 4 years. with hulu for my television programs and netflix for the movies i dont need cable. also, hulu and netflix combined is cheaper than cable. and this is why someone would pay.

jus to get it off my chest netflix is over-rated.
