Coming Tuesday to PSN: Kane & Lynch Demo for PS3

Grace Chen's Avatar + Posted by Grace Chen on Jul 16, 2010 // Director, PlayStation Store

We’ve got exciting news for PlayStation Plus members! On Tuesday, July 20, an exclusive demo of Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days will be available for automatic delivery to your PlayStation 3 system, just for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The demo is available exclusively to PlayStation Plus members for one week on the PlayStation Store — both by automatic download and from the storefront.

The demo will be available to all PlayStation Store users on Tuesday, July 27.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days

IMPORTANT: To receive the automatic download, make sure to turn on the “Automatic Download” feature in the “Settings –> “System Settings” menu on the XMB. You can select a timeframe (2-hour interval) you want the PS3 system to check for available downloads.

Auto Download for PlayStation Plus

Here are some things to know:

  • You must be an active PlayStation Plus subscriber to enjoy the convenience of automatic downloads (which also delivers firmware updates and game patches).
  • If you turn on the Automatic Download feature before Monday, July 19, expect to have the Kane & Lynch demo pushed to your system July 20th or 21st. during the timeframe you designate in your settings.
  • If you turn on the feature between July 20 – 27, you can expect to have the demo pushed to your system within 24 hours, during the timeframe you designate in your setting.
  • You’ll get the demo more quickly if your PS3 is not turned on during the timeframe you designate to check for updates, because the auto download feature of PlayStation Plus looks for content while your PS3 system is turned off.
  • The demo will also be published to the PlayStation Plus section of PlayStation Store during our weekly store publish on Tuesday 7/20. Again, this will be available only for PlayStation Plus members.
  • Here’s how it works. The Automatic Download feature:
    • turns on your PS3 system every 48 hours (during the timeframe you designate)
    • checks for content
    • downloads anything available to your PS3
    • shuts off your PS3 system
  • If your system is on during the timeframe you designate to check for updates, your PS3 will check for updates after it is turned off, during its next designated timeframe. This will likely be 24 – 48 hours later.
  • If you already have the demo on your system, PlayStation Plus will not push the demo to your system. (This is true even if you get the demo and then delete it.)
  • If you haven’t subscribed to PlayStation Plus, there is a 12-month package available for $49.99 and a 3-month package for $17.99. If you purchase the 12-month package now, you get a bonus three months for no additional charge.
  • Visit the PlayStation Plus section of PlayStation Store to see the great discounts and free games that are being offered in PS Plus.

Here’s some info on the demo:

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is a raw and brutal crime shooter that redefines the way you experience gaming, delivering an unmatched sense of realism and intensity. The demo includes relentless action in single player and online multiplayer. Play as psychopath Lynch, wanted by the entire underworld and on the run in the backstreets and rooftops of Shanghai. And play Fragile Alliance, the acclaimed multiplayer heist game based on greed, betrayal & revenge, now extended with more risk and more rewards. Get in, steal the loot, and get out in 4 minutes, but trust no one.

How much space do we need available to have the “push” work?

I have had the automatic update option turned on since the day PS+ came out, only once has it actually updated anything. Since then I have done 13 different updates to games.

I know its still new but there should be more options associated with the automatic downloads feature. We should be able to opt in/out of updates, demos, video content separately not all or none.

Also it would be nice if there was some more information on exactly how it works & what it’s intended to do. All the info about it so far has been vague like ‘oh i THINK it updates the last 10 games’, please some exact information.

Sounds good to me!

Was a little apprehensive about purchasing Plus, but I have been pleasantly suprised so far. Really looking forward to the future of the Plus service and what other goodies will come our way.

Automatic updates work wonders. It updated LIttlebigplanet and wipeout HD for me :)

Also, if my PS3 goes to look for content at 4AM on the 20th will it be there? I might as well just download it myself when the store updates if that’s the case.

I really hope that these special recommendations are pushed BEFORE the store posts it, otherwise it’s a useless feature. Any PSN loyalist that bought PS+ watches for the store to update every Tuesday.

How will this push feature help if we still have to download demos manually from the store if we want to play them as soon as they release? All I’m saying is, the demo should be on my PS3 when I get up the late-morning of Tuesday. I don’t like hearing: “expect to have the Kane & Lynch demo pushed to your system July 20th or 21st”.

Thanks though, I guess you’re working out the dents.

Sweet. One question. When it says that the system will download videos that you recommend, why hasnt mine. Is it just my system or has no one had any videos downloaded. This seems to be a really great feature, but whats the point if you dont recommend anything. Other than that, I really love PlayStation Plus, Ive nearly got my $50 worth already, and we havent even reached the second month since its been out. SWEET!

+ Canuck4Life on July 16th, 2010 at 10:16 am said:

@2 (KirkPad): I believe it’s a 5GB minimum in order for auto downloading to work.

PS+ is really worth it’s money. especially with LBP thrown in.
I would also like to see more options about the automatic downloads/updates. with a limited bandwidth/month I can’t afford to download everything i don’t really need.
My playstation magaine comes with a demo disc every month so i don’t bother downloading demos but i’d like to use the auto-update function.
Glad to see cool stuff for plus, keep doing that :)

+ Kirkpad on July 16th, 2010 at 10:22 am said:

@10 Well, I wish someone would actually say that. When you turn it on it doesn’t mention it. And neither does this post.

I didn’t realize I was addressing Grace Chen either.

I really like the idea of the auto downloads. Only problem is I never turn my system off. When I’m not playing games, watching movies or listening to music I’m Folding@Home. So does the system not download at all while my PS3 is on? I know that I have had to update 2 or 3 games manually when I started them. If I have advanced notice, like this blog post has given, then I guess it’s no problem to turn my system off. I just don’t want to keep turning it off every night.

By the way, @miva2, how do you get demo discs with your Playstation Mag. I used to get them in-store but apparently they don’t do that anymore, and I have never gotten them with a subscription.

Im not a PSPlus member, but is there a way to make “Automatic Downloads” ONLY download patches and firmware updates? I don’t want crappy demos like this clogging my download history or hard drive space.

I’m a PS Plus member but this seems like a silly move to screw normal PSN members.

It just sounds you took the normal demo you were gonna get anyway and made it exclusive to us for a week so we felt more special.

These is pretty sweet. Looks like I’m gonna have to do some data management though, my puny 60g is just about full to the rim. If I am gonna need at least 5g free to get the auto download option available. Ah well, I wish my external drive storage device would come sooner, staring at this 320g replacement drive is killing me.

Don’t get me wrong, I emjoy being a ps+ member, but having to say I get an exclusive demo of K&L2 is not the type of stuff to brag about. Obviously I’ll try it, but my expectations are so low after the first game that I’m not holding my breath that this game will be that much better.

Auto download and push updates are intended for when you are not available to do them yourself or if you dont want to spend time to update your title when given the option on start up. It will update the games you play that need an update, if the title has not been played before you enabled the auto download Im sure it wont do the actual update. The feature is actually going to be more useful as time goes by, its not something you should expect instant use out of. Why do I feel like the only gamer who understands the industry at times?

Kane & Lynch 2 demo? Sounds sweet! I’m sure IO Interactive have learned from their mistakes from the last time, for example the cover-system and Eidos firing people for poor reasons…

If the cover system works and the aiming has been revamped to be less realistic and more game-able, then I am definitely in, and a demo could show me these exact things!

Now that I think about it, is this the first game thats being pushed to consoles for Automatic Download? Also, I wonder whats the most likely choice of an early beta for Plus Subcribers.

What time you guys think I should set it too? Also, to the people saying the feature doesn’t work for them…

The feature works perfectly. If your games are already up to date, then why would it work? I have re-downloaed Fat Princess to get ready for the DLC and when I turned on my PS3 to get the DLC, the system(Before XMB) told me that it already downloaded the FP update. It will work.

Just have to figure a good time frame for this demo.

I agree that the first K&L was an ok game(not horrible), but I’ve played the demo already and it is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the first! They learned from their mistake. I’m just downloading the PS3 version to see if there’s any graphical difference, but I’m getting this game for PS3 reguardless.

There is 2 problems with this…

1. It’s a sequel to a mediocre game (it makes me wonder when a Vampire Rain sequel will happen)

2. It comes out about a week or so before Mafia 2.

Why would I get a sequel to a terrible game when I could pick up Mafia 2 instead? Mafia 2 will have much more replay value and it will have exclusive content (for the PS3 version anyways).
