Scott Pilgrim vs The World Soundtrack Goes Old School

Once we decided to go for the old school, side scrolling, beat ‘em up style with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Video Game, we wanted to go all in! We brought in pixel artist extraordinaire Paul Robertson.

The next step was creating an amazing soundtrack. We immediately thought of Brooklyn chiptune rockers, Anamanaguchi. They wowed us (and 5,000 others) at PAX and really captured the sound we wanted for the game. Here, the guys share their favorite songs from the game.

Ary Warnaar

“Twin Dragons”

I really enjoyed how the Twin Dragons cue came into existence. It was very unexpected. A couple months ago we were playing a show here in Brooklyn with Ok, Go. I was hanging out backstage with one of my good friends Damon who also happens to be one of the most talented chip artists I know (he goes by Starscream with his drummer George). We were kinda bored and decided to start a collaboration italo-disco song on Game Boy. He started with an awesome bass line and beat, and I started writing some melody stuff. We didn’t get past the loop that night, but the next day I couldn’t get it out of my head, and kept working on it. I don’t remember at what point I realized it would work perfectly for the game… it sort of just transformed into that cue naturally. So yeah, it’s my favorite because it really started as a song for myself that ended up being for Scott Pilgrim. That natural transition is a great example of what made the project so fun. It never really felt like writing for a video game, it felt more like composing music for life stuff we’ve all experienced – stuff that Scott Pilgrim happened to have experienced as well…

“Suburban Tram”

I’m especially proud of the track we wrote for the train level – Suburban Tram. When we were working on it, Pete had brought up giving it a sort of Hot Water Music-type sound, and it actually came very naturally after that. I really love positive, uplifting punk and post-hardcore music, and it was a lot of fun to try and translate it into our distinct style. Something about the final version of this track evokes real motion, as in makes you want to move, both from the heart and on the road.. at least that’s how i hear it!

James DeVito
“This is the End”
[audio:https://blog.us.playstation.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/This-is-the-End.mp3]
It was really interesting to hear ‘This is the End’ (yes, it’s for the perfect ending only!) go through many different phases as it was being written. At first it was just a straight ballad, but it needed something more… more epic and triumphant. Obviously it’s gotta be the best song ever if you have to be perfect to get there. That’s when Ary mentioned to Pete to think of it more as an epic Queen ballad, and it all came together after that. Pete absolutely nailed it. Not only will this song be extremely gratifying to the player as they perfect the game, but it also ended up being one of the last songs we wrote, and the last song we mixed, so us too were even treated to the ‘perfect’ ending of an incredibly amazing project.

Peter Berkman
“Scott Pilgrim Theme”
[audio:https://blog.us.playstation.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Scott-Pilgrim-Theme.mp3]
It’s really difficult for me to pick just one track to talk about, so I guess I’ll approach it in the big picture and discuss the theme. This was the first song we wrote for the game, I wanted the theme to be everything that epitomizes “Scott Pilgrim” to me. I wanted a melody that was both melancholy and triumphant, I wanted it to evoke a sort of nostalgic John Hughes world and the deluge of emotions and gut feelings that present themselves when you’re completely smitten, which Scott Pilgrim undoubtedly is. That’s what the second half of the song is about, the first half is about punching people, obviously.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World debuts exclusively on the PlayStation Network on August 10th.

  • I’m praying to the music gods that a soundtrack will be made available because I’m hooked on Anamanaguchi’s music!

  • Not to be a hater, but to only post 10 second snippets of songs is pretty lame.

Looking forward to the game though.

  • I can imagine the Engadget Podcast using music like this ;)

  • Wishing you’d gone a LITTLE further down the line for the music’s setting. Y’know, when that fine line was crossed between “blocky” and “catchy.” I’d say the Sega Genesis (particularly the Sonic games and Streets of Rage) would’ve been a good example.

(For any of you that have the Genesis Collection, if you didn’t notice before, play through Streets of Rage and pay attention to the music- really good stuff.)

  • I agree with MadMoses. These tracks are totally awesome, but only putting up about a dozen seconds of each is entirely lame.

I also can’t wait for this soundtrack to be released, because I really want to own it!

  • I already preordered it, very excited!

  • @ Me (4)

    Actually, no need.

Can’t say I completely agree with all of the selections (and the later games actually seem to get MORE blocky, which, strangely, coincides with my thoughts that the game got progressively worse- same story for Golden Axe), but just the first few give you a good idea.

  • Woohoo!!! Already pre-ordered! Can’t wait for this! Get out a soundtrack as well you guys!

  • The game is listed as $10 on the UBI pre-order website. Is that just the pre-order price or just the standard price for the game?

  • Stephen Stills is the best SP character, i cannot wait to kick some [DELETED] with him!

  • Got it preordered from Ubisoft. Heck yeah!

Oh and if any of yous plans to preorder at the site make sure to input 10THANKS (all caps) in the promo code box. You get an extra $1 off. It ain’t much but if you plan to preorder anyway… why not save a buck? Can’t wait for some River City Ransom beat em up style action! Enjoy kiddos!

  • THE GAME LOOKS COOL WITH ITS PIXEL GRAPHIXS BUT I WOULD PREFER THE HD GRAPHIX…CUZ THAT OLDSKOOL LOOK IS GOING TO HURT MY EYES..:/ IT WOULD BE A COOL OPTION IF THEY ALLOWED YOU TO CHANGE IT ..AS FOR THE PRICE ITS A GOOD DEAL.1 DAY PURCHASE FOR ME :P

Or, as Zombie Blogneck says, just get it on PSN!

  • QUESTION…HOW DO U PRE-ORDER A PSN GAME..IS THIS ALSO COMING OUT IN BLUERAY?

  • I can’t wait for this game i pre-ordered it the minute i opened the email from Ubisoft. Will there be Scott Pilgrim avatars on the psn store?

  • I was going to buy this game, but now I don’t know if I am. Why? Cause I have the PS Plus, and Sony has done a very poor job on it so far. I know Sony doesn’t know what games I own, but so far every almost game they gave for “FREE” and games I have already own, making the Plus purchase a bad idea. Sony should give Plus members a choice on what games they can choose, 1-2 Frees PSN games a month, 1-2 Minis and month, and so on and so forth. Since Sony is doing this to loyal customers like me, I will not buy a PSN game for a long time. Unless things change that is!

  • Will the soundtrack be on PSN? *Big smile*

  • @ DZORMAGEN (14)

I sort of know how you feel- it’s only happened to me once with Critter Crunch, but I’m feeling very uneasy since I don’t exactly have a small game library- plenty chances for me to get something I already have.

  • @14 but its not like they are doing it on purpose

  • The music sounds amazing. I can’t wait to play this on August 10th!
I already have it pre-ordered and I’m just counting down the time. :D

  • Already pre-ordered this (as silly as that may be, for a downloadable game), but I must have the soundtrack, too! It needs to be available on PSN, along with some SP dynamic themes.

Also, love that screenshot. I plan to use the 1080 version for my PS3’s XMB background, just to get me hyped for the game.

  • I Never knew you could preoder this! GRRRR i just put a $20 card on my account.

  • The movie looks kick [DELETED] too.

  • @ 14…THAT WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA..ALLOWING US LOYAL PS GAMERS TO CHOOSE WHAT GAMES WE WANT FOR FREE FROM THE PSN STORE AND MOVIES WOULD BE NICE TOO..ITS A PERFECT WAY TO GET THOSE WHO ALREADY OWN THE FREE GAMES THEY ARE GIVING ..INTO PSN+..I …ON THE OTHER HAND…. AM WAITING PATIENTLY..UNTIL SONY RELEASES THE CROSS GAME VOICE CHAT OR SOME AWESOME UPDATE THATS WORTH SIGNING UP TO THE +…OOH AND SORRY FOR THE CAPS..BUT IM NOT GOING TO REWRITE THIS :P

  • LMAO..MY BAD I MENT #16..MY BAD..:P

  • Yeah, they should have this to preorder on the PSN Store too. I have money on my account I’d like to use towards this instead of say a credit card or Paypal.

  • I just discover Scott Pilgrim vs. The World so I’m a bit lost.
1 ) Is this soundtrack going to be available on the PS Store?
2 ) Are the comics going to be available for the PSP Comics Store?
3 ) How do you pre-order a direct download game?
    Thanks for your time!

  • I better Pre-Order! Just in case it sells out.

  • @ 28….um….don’t think its gonna sell out as it’s only available via digital download

  • The game will be 9.99$ US (See comment 9) but it will be probably 15$ CAN.

Once again we are the loser…..

  • Can’t wait for the game. Thanks for confirmation of $9.99 Jeff.

  • lol @ 28…I HOPE YOUR NOT SERIOUS..:/

  • When you preorder you get a promo-code that redeem on release day.

  • I can’t log in on Ubisoft’s Store (and I’m 100% sure than my login and password are correct). It just kicks me back to the homepage. Does anyone has the same problem?

  • I was wondering if its possible to do a promotion for psn user to pre order scott pilgrim on the psn instead of pre ordering off of ubi soft web site ? Because most psn user I know only uses psn cards and most people dont use or have credit cards ‘ like me’ . It would be greatfull If you guys or the ubi staff answer towards this concern . Thank You . And looking foreword to this game

  • @ 36 They also take PayPal…and I really don’t think you are going to get anything special from Sony/Ubi since they already have a promotion in place. Besides, the game is out the 10th of August, really not enough time to cater to your wish.

  • This game looks like it’ll be the best game on the network.

$10 is a steal in my opinion.

  • Question about pre-order: How exactly does this work? If I pre-order, when can I download the game?

Is it going to appear as though I already purchased it, and I just go into the downloaded list to download or what is the deal here?

I don’t want to buy the game twice obviously. I’m not going to blindly enter my credit card info. Why can’t I pre-order through the PSN? Why must Ubisoft have my credit info……?

(if no one responds to this, that is ridiculous.)

  • Thank to to earlier comment #34.

I should have read the comments before I commented, but at least someone is on the ball. Unlike these Sony fools.

  • @39. Are you serious….? Man, I really do feel bad for Community managers sometimes…

  • such a rad looking game.. and the music by Anamanaguchi is totally fitting in its equally-rad sounding-ness.

    yess…

  • Oh wow, I didn’t know what the price was until now, all I had to go on was the price for 360, but that’s in some weird point system that I though would make the game 15$. This is very nice, but does the inclusion of home content mean there maybe some more home unlockables in the game?

  • Avatars would be like a dream come true. :D Pre ordering tomorrow even though there’s no real point. :P

  • @11 haha thanks for the discount bro

  • I never even heard of Scott Pilgrim until this game was announced, despite the fact I’m originally from Portland. Everything about it is awesome imo, from the River City gameplay to the Sprite-based animations right down to the chip tunes… I love chip tunes! Anyone know where I can find the Scott Pilgrim books?

  • Just pre-ordered it, thanks 11!

  • @Jeff Rubenstein YAYZ! ^_^ i really hope they do it!

  • psyched for this, got the funds already in my psn wallet!

  • Man thats sweet its on psn but tho i wonder if it will get a psn port to psp
