NBA Elite 11 for PS3: New Controls and NBA Jam Confirmed

208 24

Hey guys, I’m Yaw (pronounced as “yao” like Yao Ming) and I’m the NBA Community Manager from Electronic Arts Canada. I work alongside the EA SPORTS: NBA ELITE and NBA JAM development teams. We have exciting news to share with all of you today — three modes of NBA JAM will be included with your purchase of NBA ELITE.

This year, our team at EA SPORTS wanted to create the ultimate basketball experience for PS3 owners. If you’ve been following all the news and updates on NBA ELITE, then the first thing that you’ve seen is the game is no longer called NBA LIVE. So why the name change?

Well, we believe that NBA ELITE will revolutionize the way you think, feel and play basketball video games — forever. The dev team is driving never seen before innovation in the form of a number of features that are radically different than what you have seen in previous NBA games. The first change you will see is in the revised control scheme: Hands-On Control. This year you have full control over everything in the game; from offense to defense. Your shooting is based on skill (not on the dice roll of hitting a button and letting the AI determine your success.) Dribbling is one-to-one movement, you can link moves together seamlessly like; euro-steps, dunk adjusts, spins-moves and so much more.

The second major revolutionary innovation you’re going to see is the inclusion of real physics driving the game. We’re leveraging the physics animation technology that drove NHL, FIFA and even Fight Night into the upper echelons of sports video games and applying it in way that works specifically for basketball.

PS3 - NBA 11 Elite

People that we’ve shared the game with to date have told us that they are impressed (even amazed) at how NBA ELITE is the first game to “play and feel like real basketball.” We feel this comes down to all the little things you are able to see in this year’s game, such as unique ball deflections every time you play the game and various player collisions that make NBA basketball as exciting as it is. Look for more details to come on real physics, killer new modes, and more about our revamped in-game presentation centered around ESPN and their lead commentary team of Breen, Van Gundy, and Jackson.

With all the new additions that have gone into NBA ELITE 11 — we really feel that we’re doing everything to blaze a new path for basketball games — and we want you to play the game to see for yourself. To make NBA ELITE the ultimate basketball experience for you, we will be including three modes of NBA JAM for FREE with NBA ELITE 11. That’s right, not only will you be getting NBA ELITE 11 when you buy the game, but you will also have NBA JAM available as well — so for the price of one game, you’re getting two full NBA experiences. Another important note to share with all of you — the ONLY way you will be able to play NBA JAM for the PS3 is to buy NBA ELITE 11.

NBA ELITE for PS3 with NBA Jam

With NBA JAM on the PS3, the team is bringing you the classic two-on-two experience that you once knew from the original arcade game but this time with updated teams, and of course all in glorious HD. The controls are very easy to pick up and once you start throwing down monster dunks or begin heating up, it’s going to be hard to put down the controller. The game stays true to the original game but at the same time it offers a brand new take on the classic, with updated graphics and new game-play mechanics.

We’re very excited to be able to share the news with all of you, I know talking with a number of people in the community; everyone has wanted to see NBA JAM on the PS3. I can finally let you all know that your wish has become reality. I’m definitely curious to hear your thoughts about all of this. Be sure to comment below and let us all know what you think of the news.

Pencil mid-to-late September into your calendars for the NBA ELITE downloadable demo on PSN. We really believe that once you play the game for yourselves, you will see the revolutionary change that we’ve been talking about. For more information, join us on Facebook at EA SPORTS NBA, or you can follow me on Twitter @blackflash83.

  • is NBA Jam Move enabled?

  • 1st thing, I’m glad I’ll be able to play NBA Jam on my PS3.

    But I have a question.

Will the NBA Jam be bundled with all regions(R1/R2/R3) of NBA Elite 11 ? Or is it available only in R1 region ?

    Thanks for the reply.

  • Amazing! You’ve destroyed my interest in an NBA Jam relaunch!

  • WOW!! This was completely unexpected!! It looks like I have to buy 2 basketball games this year (I have NEVER done this)! I was going to buy NBA 2K11 only, but now that NBA Elite has NBA Jam, this is a no brainer!! Questions though:

What is the difference between the Wii version of NBA JAM than the PS3 version?

Will NBA Jam be on a separate disc, or on the same disc as Elite?

Will the NBA Jam portion of the game have its own trophies?

  • BOOM SHOCKA LOCKA!

  • “And the only way to play ‘Jam’ on the 360 and PS3 is by picking up ‘Elite’. There’s a one-time use code that will be in every copy of ‘Elite’, so you just go online and redeem it. We’re not selling ‘Jam’ on PSN or Xbox Live. If you still want the full product, the full experience is on the Wii, but if you pick up ‘Elite’, you’re still getting a good taste of it, especially with the inclusion of online play.”

So yeah, NBA Jam is still Wii-exclusive and EA just lost massive points in my book.

    • Were you only looking to pick up JAM? I don’t see how offering two unique basketball experiences for the price of one game would be a negative.

I’m curious as to why you think so negatively of this move.

  • Well, eff that. I guess I’m not getting to play NBA Jam. Complete and utter disinterest.

See, the reason why I like NBA Jam is because it feels like basketball distilled. I DON’T CARE how cool and new and realistic your NBA Elite game is because I DON’T LIKE basketball enough. That’s WHY I liked NBA Jam.

I get that you just want tons of people to play the new game, and here’s a slightly devious way to get more people to play it, but dude, way to SCREW UP a perfect opportunity. I don’t think you realize how popular a new NBA Jam game actually is. The NBA Jam crowd does not overlap into the NBA Elite crowd as much as you think.

This is seriously THE dumbest marketing decision I’ve seen in a long time.

  • “the ONLY way you will be able to play NBA JAM for the PS3 is to buy NBA ELITE 11.”
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? You’re kiddin’ right?! Sorry NBA2K11 4 me.

What does it mean “3 modes of NBA Jam”? And what with the rest?

When we’ll be able to buy NBA Jam on PSN? We all know it WILL happen.

  • OK word is that NBA Jam will come bundled with a one-time download code. I just got this info from IGN.

  • I had serious excitement for the new NBA JAM, but I’m not going to be fooled into buying it on the Wii.

EA: $10 PSN download, then you can have my money. Making me buy your $60 game to play a demo of it isn’t cutting it.

  • Idk but I’m going to stick with 2k & maybe get NBA jam

  • Lame, I’d buy NBA Jam as a PSN download but I’ve got no interest in a simulation basketball game, especially not one at $60 that requires me to put a disc in. Guess I’ll wait until whatever exclusivity deal Nintendo has runs out to get my Jam on. Haven’t played it in over 10 years so what’s a little bit longer?

  • Yes, well done EA, morons.

“We’re very excited to be able to share the news with all of you, I know talking with a number of people in the community; everyone has wanted to see NBA JAM on the PS3. How about just giving NBA JAM to us properly instead of a gimped version we have to buy a terrible modern game to even play on our system. And to say you’re very excited about it. IDIOTS!

  • The best they might get out of me is buying NBA Elite, then using the code to download NBA Jam, then IMMEDIATELY trading NBA Elite in to GameFly or on eBay or something.

  • Here’s what you need to know: This will only be a GLORIFIED DEMO of NBA Jam!

THE ONLY WAY TO PLAY THE FULL GAME IS ON WII!

    http://kotaku.com/5603068/nba-jam-confirmed-for-360-ps3-but-theres-a-catch

  • NBA Jam included? Wow, day 1 purchase.

  • @VenomXv – read my comment above and check out the link from Kotaku. It’s only a GLORIFIED DEMO! The full NBA Jam is ONLY ON WII! It’s really shady.

    • I couldn’t disagree with you more on calling it a glorified demo. You’re getting three full game modes of JAM to play with all the functionality that you will see in on the Wii and it will be in HD. Also one of those game modes will be online so you can take any team in the game and go up against a friend.

Calling it a glorified demo couldn’t be further from the truth.

  • I was really interested in playing NBA Jam but not anymore.

  • SO will the Miami Heat dominate the game both in elite 11 & nba jam

  • Sorry but I’ll buy this for Wii.

Calling you idiot isn’t nice, but sticking “IDIOT” right in your forehead is way too much for me.

I don’t even like basketball, why the hell do I have to buy this NBA Elite thing?

I was always a fan of NBA Jam, spent countless hours playing it on Megadrive and this would be a nice oportunity to play NBA Jam in HD, but I’ll stick to the Wii this time.

  • I’ve waited over 10 years for a Jam/Hangtime sequel, but there’s no way I’m buying a game I don’t want to get some small part of it. No thanks, EA!

  • It’s not enough that you guys have these “Online Access Codes” but now we have to buy your less than average NBA game to get a portion of NBA Jam??? I know you’re trying to revitalize your NBA franchise, but come on…

I’ll probably just get Jam on the Wii.

  • Never mind about the excitement. After reading Kotaku.com, now I know why I support 2K games more than Ea when it comes to basketball. In fact, I would support football too, but these dam monopolist bought the rights to the NFL! It’s ludicrous what Ea has done in gaming in the last few years! They want to just ruin it for everyone! I will not buy Elite now (I thought I was earlier in my post, but never mind)! Try to scum someone else, not me Ea! In fact I might not even buy Madden 11 this year cause of this! Us gamers have to get together and try to destroy Ea )by stop buying their games), like Ea tries to destroy us gamers!

    • How is EA trying to destroy gamers here? We’re bringing you two unique basketball experiences in one game for the price of one game. It’s about giving you guys a complete basketball experience. No one is out to ruin gaming for anyone, it’s about us trying to giving you guys as much fun as you can get in one basketball package.

  • sounds better than the football madden 11 “improvements”

  • This series has been irrelevant for about a decade now and no marketing re-branding is going to save it now.

  • Way to go EA! Since NBA Jam on Mega Drive I haven’t bought any basketball game on any system whatsoever. But when I read about NBA Jam for PS3, I was sitting in front of my PC with glowing eyes, already prepared to buy it on the PSN market.

But now, I guess I won’t buy any basketball game in the foreseeable future. Maybe when this Elite game ends in a bargain bin I’ll grab it.

First you don’t make DLC for the fantastic BF 1943 and now this. Give us Mirror’s Edge 2 (without gun fights) and we’ll forgive you.

  • OMG YES FINALLY THE NBA JAM ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH EA FOR BRINGING BACK NBA JAM….omg SO STOKED!!!!!!

    WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • I’m going to wait for Wii. 2k10 put my nba live to shame. I will play the game on demo mode. 2k has better game modes then live.

  • Looks good. I’ve got 2k10 and I don’t think it is that great. I know exactly what they mean by losing control of your player. The menu system is especially horrible too.

I’m not sure if I’ll buy it because I’m just not that big of an NBA fan to buy a new title every year but it looks good. I certainly hope buying NBA Elite won’t be the only way to get NBA Jam on the PS3.

  • I don’t play sports games at all, but I do want to play NBA Jam. I really wanted it on PS3, but not if I have to buy a “normal” B-ball game with it that I have zero interest in.

  • NBA Jam was going to be a day-one purchase for me, but now it looks like I’ll be passing on it (no pun intended).

  • Ugh, why is there a 360 box art on our PS Blog? Now im not even going to try the demo…

  • Please EA support MOVE controls with NBA Elite….like 3 point shoutout with move or somethink like that

  • 1. Having the 360 box on the PS blog is just stupid. You know you will get crap for it. Makes me feel like you are not interested in us as customers and you are more interested in selling as many copies as you can. It would have taken less than 5mins to remove it and make a campaign for PS users only. Pure laziness.

    2. Seriously… $60… This has to be some sort of a joke right? With so MANY great titles coming between October to December I do not see how you think this game will sell. Smoking rock is what I think you guys were doing when you should have been figuring out what your clients/customers really want!

  • YESSSSSSSSSS NBA JAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMm

    boomshakalaka!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Sorry EA…moving on. You could have had some of my cash but packaging a gimped version with a game I don’t want and making that the only way to buy it?

    Not a freaking chance.

Also…you know and I know that you’ll be selling it as a standalone title by spring of 2011 and guess what…I won’t buy it then either just to spite your company.

  • This is about the dumbest thing you could have done – I totally would have bought NBA Jam as a PSN download, but I have absolutely no interest in playing a full basketball game like Elite. The whole point of NBA Jam is that it appeals to even non-basketball fans like me.

    • I don’t see it like that. You’re getting two unique basketball experiences for the price of one game. I understand that you’re looking to play NBA JAM as are a number of other gamers but to call it dumb that you’re getting two unique basketball experiences in one game, I couldn’t disagree with you more.

  • Hmm it will take more than NBA Jam to convert me from 2K, so I hope the demo is awe inspiring.

    • I hope you take the opportunity try out the NBA ELITE demo in September. Try the game for yourself and see what the team is bringing to the table.

  • BTW…THIS is how you bring a 5 rated post to under 3…are you sensing the issue here?

  • I’m a Sony guy to the core..but I will be buying NBA Jam on Wii, definitely. I do not want a gimped game with a mediocre game – 2K11 is taking all of the wind out of EA’s sail’s this year!

  • I’m not buying this game for the demo… I was planning to get 2k11, ill buy nba jam later if it comes out on psn or on the wii.

    • It’s not a demo. You’re getting three full game modes of NBA JAM where you will have the same functionality as you will find on the Wii version. It’s anything but a demo.

  • Now, I have a PS3 as well as a Wii. THis would be cool to play with my kids or with my wife (since she isn’t a fan of controllers having “all those buttons”)

But I don’t see myself buying NBA Elite (aka Live) a franchise I haven’t played since ’99 and still really have no want to play. But, I’m a demo head, so I’ll give the demo of Elite a shot before making a FINAL decision.

But changing the name and then packing in something you KNOW gamers would want isn’t going to convince those who love b ball games to buy your product. If it’s quality, then the demo of Elite will speak for itself. No need to play tricks or pull stunts like this at all. Cause people will see through the parlor tricks

    • This isn’t about EA pulling any tricks or stunts on the community. As you said regarding the demo, we want you guys to check out what ELITE has to offer based on the demo that we will put out in September. The entire idea of packing JAM with ELITE was to give you guys a full basketball experience where you will have two unique flavors of basketball all in one package.

This isn’t about fooling the community at all.

  • Is this really the case??? You need to buy NBA Elite to get NBA Jam for the PS3???

Please tell me this is a joke???

I was couting down the days for NBA JAM!!!!

  • I see it’s a demo of NBA JAM.

  • NBA Jam needs to be a PSN download. This is just stupid.

Best comment so far. Packing NBA Jam with NBA Elite and making it the only way to play the game just SCREAMS Mediocre basketball game. It shows you have no confidence going up against 2K11 and their Jordan cover. Huge Mistake. Good freakin’ luck.

  • Nice, nice. I don’t like that promo pic with that Xbox 360 version in it, take it off this site please.

  • Once again EA shows how how they love to stick it hard in the players. forcing gamers to purchase a Full game just to get a dumb down version of NBA JAM, The Wii version will be the better game. What a disgusting move by EA but it does not surprise me one bit…..

  • With this “monster dunk” announcement, the PS Blog community is “on fire,” sending out a “boomshakalaka” shockwave of discontent.

  • Boooo of course but if you guys have looked at the internet in the last 9 hours or so you’d know that most people hate this news. To release 2 versions of a game people want and WOULD have buy blindly for nostalgia will now not even bother b/c neither version is even complete
