ModNation Monday: Community Artist Spotlight, Secrets of a “Super Creator”

40 1

Today’s post is our first Community Artist Spotlight. Every other week or so, ModNation Monday will spotlight a community creator who is producing outstanding original content. We’re happy to introduce Myles Gordon our first ModNation “Super Creator!” Myles specializes in making unique-looking and technically sound tracks. Game Informer’s August issue features a piece on Mr. Gordon and the amazing tracks he’s created. Our focus on Myles starts with some of his tracks and a short Q&A.

MylesG Tracks

Here is an overview of some of the highlight tracks among the Tours. There are eight Tours total with four tracks each. To find them just do a text search under tracks for “P Tour”, “M Tour”, “G Tour”, “O Tour”, “N Tour”, “R Tour”, “Q Tour” or “W Tour.”

Track Name: M Tour 3: Aquatica

Q&A with “Super Creator” Myles Gordon

How do you like creating with ModNation?

“It’s great! The tools are fun and easy to use, and you’re really given a lot of freedom with what you can make. One thing that really surprised me with the track editor is how much variety people have been able to do with only four themes.”

What do you enjoy the most about the game?

“The Track Editor is my favorite part, but gameplay wise, I love the addition of the shield — it really gets rid of the random frustration of being slammed by items that you see in other kart racers. It makes the game more skill based where you aren’t punished for being in first place.”

What would you like to see in DLC or for a possible sequel?

“Some new themes would be great (Snow, Futuristic, or Lava) as well as more props to work with, such as waterfalls, more building blocks, and a thin object with a large surface area to be used as a roof with the building blocks)”

What inspires you?

“Well I was a big fan of Mario Kart, Wipeout and F-Zero so there are probably some influences there in some of my tracks. However, when I’m planning my tracks out, I usually just sit down in front of a white board and write down any ideas that come to mind. Really all I try and do is build something fun that plays well, feels unique and looks cool.”

Who are your favorite creators and creations?

“My favorite track creators are: ArgorokX, WilsonPhillips-X and VintageOctopus. All of their tracks are unique and fun to race on.”

What advice would you give to other ModNation creators?

1. Plan it out beforehand. Just hopping into the editor without a solid plan will probably result in something that feels generic. I usually start by writing down some ideas with the goal being to have a least 3 unique moments on the course that make it stand out. I’ll then draw out a rough plan on paper and then go into the editor and try and build it.

2. Build the track first and decorate second. Get a your layout as final as possible before starting to decorate your course with props. Its much more difficult to change the course layout after you’ve filled it with props. Also ensure your layout is fun to race on and not frustrating – keep in mind it will only get more difficult as you add in the props.

3. Test before publishing. One of the best ways to do this is to have some people that have never played your track give it a try in front of you. Watch them play and get their feedback and you’ll be able to see parts that are confusing or frustrating. Also be sure to try resetting yourself (with select) during some of the more complicated sections of your course (especially jumps) to make sure you don’t reset in weird places or get stuck.”

  • This is my 1st 1st!!! Now if only I could get a code for Nathan Drake mod & cart.

  • When will Kratos, Nathan, Ratchet and Clank be available for purchase on the PSN store?

  • More importantly; when will XP Series be worth racing for XP?

  • So we get any codes today? Please say yes so far I have not been able to get codes to work at all.

  • Im a very big fan of this game and just wondering will there ever be a snow theme?

  • Please remove the region-lock in online races!! I really think it’s hurting this game! This game lives off of its community, but we can only race with people from our region?

I can understand worrying about lag in XP races/series, but at LEAST let us go worldwide in casual races!!

  • When will Ratchet and Clank Mods be availible for purchase on PSN Store?

  • We need COOL dlc like in littlebigplanet!

  • Last dlc was on august 2

  • When are the Ratchet & Clank, Drake, and Kratos mods and karts coming to the PSN Store?

  • PLEASE add a patch that allows local split-screen users to join a friend’s room online.

i’ll keep requesting until it gets patched :P

  • pongzilla| PLEASE add a patch that allows local split-screen users to join a friend’s room online.

    I agree with this.

  • @10

    Last DLC was last week.

  • Have fun with these tracks guys! =)

  • Just a IDEA… but a game based on CREATION and LOADING times that are long because of all the custom-azation. Why CANt we HOST OUT our OWN trax in a series and EARN Xp from them. Why do i want to CREATE trax that nobody wans to play because yu dont earn XP… just a thought. too me it would extend the PLAY value forever. Join a CUTOM XP series and earn XP.

  • I love the idea of the super creator! The Q+A is really interesting. I’d really like to see someone who is making exceptional and original mods and karts featured as well as track creators.

I realise those might be more difficult to find since lots of people make “inspired by” mods, but they are out there…

  • @16 can you imagine how many people would game the system if they could get race XP from their own tracks? They would make tracks that relied on shortcuts to win and then race with strangers… or they would make “boosting” style tracks to do as many races in a day as possible. Etc. Etc.

  • UFG are yet to release the patch for the games title. They made a huge typo by putting in the word “Racers”. I am told by a reliable source that this was a mistake as all they really care about is the creation aspect of the game. Yet another week where UFG focuses entirely on creations and do nothing for the racers. Seriously, get your act together and sort out this stupid f**king region lock.

Infinity Ward > UFG for game making, I know, that’s how bad UFG are.

  • Anybody still getting knocked off the server when your loking through uploaded mods, karts & tracks online? Happened to me like a dozen times today!!

  • Great job MylesG on the tracks and congrats on being featured in Game Informer and here on the Blog.
Keep up the good work and inspiration for other track creators.

YES, I agree with this suggestion
    AND
…please let us choose our own AI opponents in Quick Race (offline) and Casual Race (online).

  • Heres an idea!

We should be able to have our own PERSONAL modspots! It would have the essentials of a regular modspot, but with a small window of customization. We could have our own running music throughout, and invite our friends. No one can join without an invite though.

    Whar do you think UFG?

  • Hey UFG,
Check out my track called Stranded! I put a lot of hard work into it, and it is the first where I DIDN’T usd autopopulate. I spent a lot of time, and I know it will be good if people notice it.

  • Fun tracks!

  • @ 19, aka MLibbey18. I can agree with you on the racing not being as important as creating, which does bug me too. Hope there will be a boost for XP races and probably a Double Race XP weekend thing. Because it’s kind of pointless to create original mods for the fact that nobody will know what it is. And there’s so many licensed creations out there and they seem to be the only creations getting XP. I really feel bad for complaining about this, but I still love this game. But for the region lock, that’s kinda your fault for being impatient.

And btw IW is dead and MW2 sucked (for Mp at least)

  • @4 too true!!

Ramone please answer number 4. Seriously 500 for a series win and 50 for a victory is pathetic XP.

Even if I managed to do a perfect 5 every time I’d have to do it over 600 times just to get Lvl30, it’s not right, double all of it.

  • I was watching my bro race his tracks in casual, then we played them in split-screen, really fun tracks!

  • AMAZING… but, how do I find other Spotlight artist tracks/mods?

  • We need a better way to search for tracks. It’s like a needle in a haystack (or whatever).

  • I just won a copy of ModNation from Subway. Finally get to check some of these out.*

    *Allowing for 8 – 10 weeks delivery…

  • Duly Noted… woo hoo. Thanks Ramone.

P.S. You have made a sweet game!

  • “Duly Noted” is a step in the right direction but unless it comes to pass the racing aspect of the game is effectively dead to me. It’s a huge waste of time trying to actually race for XP under the current system. I’m better off sitting in the Modspot promoting my mods than I am actually racing. >.>;

  • @32 Great, now Modnation is going to become another LBP.

  • @33

It already is. But not in a good way.

  • @32 let’s just hope.

  • Actually, it’s a LBP-related game. I love it though. Congrats MylesG!

  • Actually, it was an LBP inspired game!

  • i expect to be ignored like every other psp post i’ve seen (including mine), but will there ever be an update to allow branching track short cuts and intersections for figure 8s?

  • @36 & 37

I think you are missing the point.

  • i will start to publish my tracks on your forum thread, may be I can be here someday :P
