Dungeon Defenders: Coming to PSN with Move & 3D Support

“Welcome brave heroes to the dungeons of Etheria!”

Or so says the “Spirit of Champions”, your tour guide in Dungeon Defenders, the new swords-and-sorcery action game coming to PSN this winter! Let me introduce you to the basics of what DunDef (as we affectionately call it) is all about. Inspired by the cooperative antics of Castle Crashers, along with the careful interplay of strategy and tactics in Defense of the Ancients, DunDef is a definitive genre hybrid: cooperative tower defense and online role-playing action bonanza!

Whether you’re playing locally (in one-to-four player split-screen) or online (which also supports split-screen), DunDef puts you in control of one of four unique Hero classes, tasked with defending your ‘Eternia Crystals’ against increasing waves of ‘toon-fantasy baddies.’ To achieve this you’ll upgrade your Hero’s statistics, develop unique new abilities, and collect & upgrade an arsenal of weapons & equipment, and even raise your own pets.

Dungeon Defenders - Gameplay

At any point you choose to, you can decimate the tide of creatures spewing forth from the ‘Creep Spawners” when building your defenses across the map. Unlike most tower defense games, however, you won’t just sit back and watch your defenses annihilate your foes. In DunDef, you jump directly into the action, and hack up tons of enemies with your beefed-up hero alongside your allies. Among the variety of enemy types (with their various attacks & behaviors), are huge mini and full on boss monsters arriving to support their cannon-fodder minions.

There’s lots more we’d love to tell you about, including the intricacies of each Hero class, the powerful upgrading system & the Mana Bank, and the various game modes including a campaign, survival and challenge missions. All in good time… for now, we should also mention that the game fully supports Sony’s awesome 3D TV (stereoscopic) technology, and the PlayStation Move for an immersive experience!

Meanwhile, we encourage everyone to check out the “Features” section at dungeondefenders.com to learn more, along with more preview coverage soon. We hope to see you all online in the realm of Etheria this winter on PSN.

  • Looks awesome.

  • Looks very interesting and I love to see downloadable games supporting Move and 3D!

  • I’m in love. Day one, etc.!

  • Stieglitz? mmmm, are you one of the inglorious basterds?

  • Reading this has me very intrigued. Looking forward to more info on this. Good work, guys.

  • So.. Fat Princess meets WoW?

  • Looks interesting! Will there be a demo? I’d like to test the Move controls first.

  • i preorder my MOVE last weekend…
i’m eager to own this game.
but can i ask you something
when will you release Castle Crashers for PSN
i dont really want th ge, but people here on the blog REALLY WANT THAT GAME every week they ask for it.
can you please release that game. cuz now since everyones want that game
    i want it to! ^^

  • 3D support is a great money maker. I have a 3D TV but because of the (so far) limited support for 3D games I feel obligated to buy them ALL.

Would have bought this anyway though, might have to pre-order a move now. Oh well.

  • Yea, looks like a combination of Fat Princess, World of Warcraft, and wizard 101

  • Wow, looks like it could be tons of fun with a couple buddies! looks really interesting, hope you guys show more on the blog, and maybe even a demo too!

BTW, glad to see that PSN titles are including 3D and Move support.

    • Yah, there will be updates coming out at regular intervals over the coming weeks detailing more info on how the Move works in DunDef, and going into more detail about the RPG & Tower Defense mechanics, the characters, abilities, etc.

The 3D functionality, of course, is pretty self-explanatory… and awesome to behold :)

  • This is an interesting take on tower defense genre. Online co-op sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

  • Im buying this nuff said

  • Looks really good… Not a huge tower defense fan, though. But online coop rpg sold me.

  • Fat Princess rated T haha

  • Inspired by DotA!!!! SWEET PLZ TELL ME NO MONTHLY FEE

  • @8 They already said that it’ll be released next Tuesday, on the 31st.

Also, this game looks like a lot of fun. I like the fact that there will be Move support, as well as 3D support. I also love that there is local and online multiplayer.

    • Cool, one unique aspect of how the multiplayer works is that you can drop-in/drop-out additional split-screen players into online (or local) gameplay dynamically at any time, simply by pressing “START” on additional controller, and then selecting or creating a hero. You can also use heroes saved on different PSN profiles among splitscreen players, so for example your little brother doesn’t have to mess up your carefully-leveled heroes/items :)

  • WOW! Looks incredibly deep and polished.

Now I don’t mean to pull from an obvious segue into a future blog post, but the Move support tickles me and there’s absolutely no mention of HOW it will support it. Jeremy, if you have a moment and can answer this, I’d be most appreciative.

Regards and thanks for the post!

    • We’ll hopefully get more chance to go into detail regarding the Move (maybe a live demo) in subsequent updates, but basically the mouse acts like a aiming cursor, allowing to to aim anywhere in 3D space. With just the gamepad, your hero uses some intelligent autoaiming, but with the Move you get to pinpoint your attacks exactly (with the option for some autoaiming still so that it’s not too challenging). It also helps for the placement of Towers, so that you can quickly move and rotate them in 3D space. Finally, it makes all the UI’s “cursor-driven”, so that you can interact with them a bit more naturally.

It’s been a lot of fun working with the Move, and is the Trendy team’s preferred method of playing the game… on a 3D TV too :)

  • WOW!! Just what the gaming Doctor ordered!

  • Holy crud that looks pretty amazing!
Got my eyes on this one now. Can’t wait to see more.

  • Can the PS3 players play with PC players like other upcoming morpg
Even if it can’t still day one for me

    • We’ve been thinking about this too. It’s do-able, we have it prototyped at the studio — but probably not in the initial release since it would need more testing (don’t want to delay the game for that :)

  • I like how the music makes this trailer so huge lol.

  • that game does look mint the online fun looks cool ad ur not going to have any one havein ago at you if you die etc etc like you do on wow going to have to get this

  • As long as I don’t have to use or have a move for any reason expect to have it I’ll get it.

    3D gives me headaches:(

Looks good tho. So what about replay value. I see level 21. Is there a cap? Will the game have a NG+ kinda mode similar to other crawlers that just increase levels and what not?

    • The Move isn’t required, DunDef is fully playable with gamepad. There is a level cap of 60, to prevent the game from getting tooo crazy until we generate more content for yet higher-level heroes to face. Indeed there is an INSANE mode unlocked after you complete one of the normal difficulty modes, which switches up the enemies and drops much rarer loot. There are also a set of Challenge missions which alter the game rules and provide different objectives, very difficulty oriented towards the highest-level heroes. Tasty rewards tend to be the result of completing these Challenges (the best familiars, etc)…

  • Yes, it looks like a must buy to me. And with all these 3d games for ps3 coming out it looks like a 3d tv might be a must buy for me next year.

  • I like it. I’m getting it.

  • This game is awesome and the rpg/tower defense hybrid is a great idea. I want it day one!

  • Coooooool! Tower defense inspired by dota gameplay and Fat Princess visuals with Move support….this is a day one for sure :)

  • They’re Xbox360 screenshots. Controveeeeeersial.

  • @29 gilletjoe

Xbox 360 screenshots indeed, although in this case instead of “controversial” I’d say “detrimental” lol. I doubt the 360 version is 3D ;)

  • Wow this game came out of nowhere for me. I want I want. I need I need. Hope the move support works well with this game as that is my next purchase.

  • Oh yeah! That’s the best looking PSN game I’ve seen. I still need to go pre-order my move stuff and eyepet too. lol

  • This looks amazing! Came out of nowhere too.

  • If anyone wants a demo it is already released on PC. udk.com/showcase-dungeon-defense.html
    Try it.

  • I def need a demo first, i’ve been burned off of trailers before haha

    • Yup, demo will be coming to PSN before the full game release. It’ll be an awesome fully-featured demo too :)

  • Wow! It is about time to see a non subscription RPG online for the PS3 that looks like a lot of fun and not some newer metrosexual game.

Kodos to you fellows! I can’t wait to see what this is priced at because I would love to get into it with some of my friends.

  • @34 that’s an extremely old demo

  • Yest it is but the gameplay will be the same. Just to see what you can expect ;)

  • looks interesting

  • OMG, so many RPG PSN games coming…Castle Crashers, Deathspank2, Costume Quest, and now this.

  • Demo? Will the be a demo?

  • Looks really good, and I really love the split-screen support! However, why is the camera so zoomed in? It looks too crowded this way. Hopefully it can be modified.

    • Yup, camera zoom levels are fully customizable, and save to your profile. You can play from a behind-the-character 3rd person view like in much of the trailer footage, or from a zoomed-out RTS style view, or various settings in between. We realized not everyone would like the same value, and also different zooms are often useful in various circumstances.

  • is the move a whole new system or is it just a special controller u can use on the ps3?

    • Move is a combination of the (already-released) PlayStation Eye and an (upcoming) Move Controller, which enable the PlayStation to fully interpret the Move as an object/pointer in space, both for in-game controls (full 3D position and accelerations) and augmented reality (overlays onto the camera footage), among other things. It’s pretty crazy, check out Sony’s demos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9ybHddDMgM

  • Online,move support and 3D?

    Count me in;)

  • This looks like a heck of a lot of fun, and Move support?! Count me in, I just pre-ordered 2 Moves, a NavCon and Sports Champions last week. Looking forward to hearing more.

  • “Create and customize an AARRRMMORY of weapens!” lol. Can’t wait for this game.

  • Smart idea to incorporate PS Move, because for that reason alone I will buy this game good job guys!

  • I was skeptical prior to watching the video, because of the game’s art style (very WoW/Torchlight/etc.)… but the video impressed me. DoTA-like gameplay on the PS3? Count me in!

  • so is a a subscrtiption fee game or wat?

  • Co-op for 4 players offline and online…!!!
    Day 1 for me :)
