SOCOM 4 gamescom Floor Demo: Video tour

Jeremy Dunham's Avatar Posted by on Aug 26, 2010 // Sr. Community Manager, Zipper Interactive

It’s a proud week for us here at Zipper Interactive as tomorrow marks the 8th birthday of our first-ever PS2 game and the title that started a huge multimillion-selling franchise, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs. To celebrate the eight-year mark, we’ve put together a special video for our fans.

In it, you’ll experience the gamescom 2010 SOCOM 4 demo in its entirety with commentary by lead designer, Travis Steiner. This is the first time anywhere that you’ll see the gamescom demo played all the way through and in high-definition, making it a “must watch” for anyone even remotely interested in what we have in store for 2011.

Let us know what you think below, and please accept our sincerest thanks for making the first eight years of SOCOM as great as they have been. Here’s to many more to come!

how about co-op ???

I’m sorry, but Socom 4 is gonna fail, they should have put all the time they are wasting on this game into making MAG what socom 2 did for gaming. I look at that vid and see MAG remnants everywhere but yet I digress. Gotta buy the Move for something.

Please give us online co-op for the campaign.

+ GA_RoyalT on August 27th, 2010 at 12:48 am said:

That isn’t even casual to me. MGS4 online looks better and that came out years ago. Sorry Zipper your droppin the ball. If Black ops or MOH has any kind of team based play(in the final versions), socom will fail.

is it possible to lob grenades from behind cover?
i dont think i saw the player in that demo lob grenades from behind cover, instead having to stick his head out and wait for the opportune moment.

would be a big plus if it was possible to throw grenades from behind cover-even if we cant actually aim it

Wow, I might end up buying this. Graphics look great, gameplay looks smooth and I really like the fact that you get to play as your own country’s Special Forces (well, if you live in one of the 12 included countries). I’ll be playing as a Dutch soldier of course. Awesome. ^^

I REALLY, REALLY hope there’ll be full campaign co-op. It would be extremely awesome if it would be 4 player co-op, but 2 is fine as well. But why wouldn’t they include it? I mean, the way the missions are set up (it looks as if you’re always playing with squadmates), why wouldn’t they include it?

One thing I did notice however, is that the character never ‘slides’ into cover. You have to be real close to the object to ‘snap’ to it. I hope we’ll be able to slide into cover like in Uncharted 2 in the final game.

+ D_Face22 on August 27th, 2010 at 4:42 am said:

Will this game have slide to cover? because it looks like it would be very useful in the campaign mode, especially at 11:20

Does Zipper plan on Drastically Changing the multiplayer part of socom like they did with MaG? Because i didnt believe it was possible to play a beta that was better than the finished release.

I Love SOCOM ever since i first popped in the first 1 after messing with the network adapter(lol) on my PS2 and hopping online i was in LOVE. After that you put out the EVEN BETTER SOCOM2.

Anyways enough [DELETED], actually, heres some more, Im loving the looks of this one. Its not classic, but thats fine with me, gotta adapt. Graphics are looking really great, it looks like youve improved a lot since you first showed for sure.

Few complaints, i hope with First person mode you guys are making it limited online, to like a slow walk or something so its not abused… I like it though as long as its limited.

Graphically, i think the explosions could use the most work, theres something off on them, like they dont blend at all, im not quite sure how to put it. They need work but still look better than last time.

Great progress. Loving the way the guns and recoil seem to be handled.

Played the Demo at E3 and I loved every bit of it. It seems to have a slightly different atmosphere than the previous socom games but that isn’t a bad thing. If you don’t evolve you run the risk of becoming irrelevant.

+ whitekrane on August 27th, 2010 at 7:05 am said:

this is going to suck because it seems like this game is going to more about single player opposed to multiplayer only diehard players even will think about playing the single player

no perks
smaller maps
no thermals in multiplayer- many stopped playing because of that
mostly 1 shot kills with the sniper rifle only with high calib

and we dont want another mag big disappointment

+ Detsuki-G on August 27th, 2010 at 7:38 am said:

This didn’t look very “SOCOM” to mee… hope it’s just because it’s the first mission. Run n’ Gun seemed to do the trick. Level’s seem linear.

Please! Do NOT release this game anywhere near Killzone 3

I’m a pretty big SOCOM fan, since the first game, and I don’t want to have to share time between KZ3 and S4. I’ve tried playing multiple games that came out near the same time before…it’s hard to do

And also on the standpoint of having to compete for players and having to choose between the 2 games in terms of revenue and units sold. Having this game out in the Winter of this year would have been PERFECT, enough time to play this and then KZ3 in Feb. But now that it’ll be next year…it’s gotta be like a couple months AFTER Feb, which kinda sucks because I truly want to play the new SOCOM.

I totally understand that it’s better to have a perfect game come out and learning the lessons of the previous SOCOM, ie. Confrontation..then just throwing the game out there when its not ready. Because we DEFINITELY don’t want that again..but I’ll be patient with it, just the anticipation and how it looks has me really excited

All I ask is to push the game several months after KZ3 is out, that way the game is perfect and gives players enough time to play KZ3 as well. Plus Sony wouldn’t want 2 franchises competing at the same time, wouldnt be good business :)

+ NickiChaos on August 27th, 2010 at 4:50 pm said:

Is this game going to have headset commands more akin to those in Socom 1 and 2? Those commands really allowed players to have their Bravo squad move around the map to nav-points easily and I would really be excited if they brought that back for Socom 4

+ QDub on August 27th, 2010 at 6:52 pm said:

Played this same Demo at GamesCom, and I have to say its 100% generic. This DOES NOT PLAY like any Socom game. Its Rainbox6 with COD controls.

Lack luster, and copy paste job from Seth Luisi.
Zipper needs to start over with a new Producer

This game sucks……they ruined what socom was all about..just a sugar coated game with less based realistic tactical work and now looks like a mw2 barn yard ride. They should had followed the greatness of socom 1-2 on the ps2 and improve from there instead of screwing up what the game was all about. Tell me who didn’t love 1 & 2. and i bet those that don’t are the ones that love mw2.which is bs anyways cause the dedicated server issue and watering down the cod series…..why can’t devs seem to now fudge what was awesome up?…why can’t they leave what nots broke alone? I don’t really care who flames me..I “was” really a die hard fan of socom but now eh….looks like they want a big OMG story game and not focus on team work realism at all hardly. lol really though pardon my rage…..

Typical, no Australian Localization. So what do we have to play as? American? British?

Also the graphics look Uncharted 2 good.

Unfourtanatly once again, another let down. Bring socom back to life. It’s like you guys are doing the exact opposite of what we want every time. R.I.P socom

Lip syncing needs work. Lighting looks 2006. Lack of Canadian representation is insulting to our NATO troops in Afghanistan.

French, Spanish and German..? Really? GFY

+ Korbei83 on August 28th, 2010 at 7:15 am said:

Though I’m sure American forces can kill Canadian troops in the field with friendly fire. I suppose that adds to the realism.

+ Spetsnas on August 28th, 2010 at 9:23 am said:

This game looks pretty bad, and I am not going to sugarcoat it.

Game looks okay in the graphics/texture department, the lighting and shadows are pretty bad especially so with that awful looking yellow/brown tint on everything. The game looks like it needs some anti aliasing or something every so often a lot of lines on the screen flicker and it is really annoying.

Also from that first mission every single thing looked about as overdone and generic as possible. A character with problems of authority, generic no name douche bag for the main lead, overdone chopper crash/explosion(this is like a requirement for every single shooter now or something), a mysterious dark past character that looks like he dies at the beginning but actually gets away or is captured.

No offense but I played this type of single player game like a million times before. The only way I can swallow this type of crap is if I can have coop. If there is no coop this game will just be another generic shooter that no one with a half a functioning brain will care about.

+ Insomnia999 on August 28th, 2010 at 11:50 am said:

I hope you guys don’t screw up the mp. If you want to have regenerating health, have separate modes online, so the hardcore players don’t have to deal with that. Consider that for cover too.

Also, the game looks like a run and gun so far in the sp. Make sure it is tactical. You won’t beat COD at run and gun, and certainly will not steal its crowd – be unique (something R2 failed at).

+ Insomnia999 on August 28th, 2010 at 11:51 am said:

Also, if you could bring back voice commands in the SP, that would be AWESOME! Think of all of those PS Eye’s that will be in households after Move launch’s…

+ E_A_G_L_E_Y_E on August 28th, 2010 at 2:23 pm said:

This is far from a socom game. Go back to the basics that made this franchise what it was and quit destroying it.

+ Eaglewatch_1 on August 28th, 2010 at 3:27 pm said:

very beautiful environment, it all looks awesome. But from the demo reel it feels a bit like gears of war and not the socom I am used to. From every socom game I have played (this could just be my tactical gameplay style) you never have to engage huge amounts of enemies and get shot 10-15 times and walk away. Seems like HALO SHIELDS to me. I understand this is the demo so I get it but still…a bit depressing. I hope to see a lot more before launch, I already have my copy paid for and ready to pick up whenever you guys decide your ready to give it to me :D
