  • F$%# you Sony. Give me back my linux you bastards!!!

  • Very impressive! This show how the PS3 team is the best in the world…. Unless you ask them to update the friend list or for cross game chat… But when it comes to Hackers the ps3 is FORT KNOX!

  • I support this update.. keep it secure..!!!

  • Hey Sony, when are you going to let me rip my games to my hard disk? Not interested in pirating the games, but would absolutely love to be able to leave the discs on my rack and boot the games from the drive. I hear that is one of the cool things that the “hack” allowed you to do. I’ve already updated my PS3. But it would be a REALLY, REALLY cool thing if you’d allow us to rip our games to the hard disk.

  • thanks it was taking a while to update trophies and i havent been able to load HOME since JunE!

  • Great work SONY , to support great games and consoles you have to pay for them…..

  • Yeah we all know what this is REALLY for.

  • eh, i don’t mind the update. but i hope this doesn’t mean you’re taking guys off of building what we actually want.

  • I like to get my firmware updates from Lempel, not Koller!

  • i take it this doesn’t fix the fact i can’t sign in on this very website from my PS3. it used to do everything a couple months ago….and one day it decides to not allow me to sign in, mainly just for this blog and to comment. its all i ask, that one simple function, returns. or someone please explain why it wont work

  • @307 madeup6: Hey idiot, assuming you’re referring to Jailbreak they SAID that’s what it’s for: “includes additional security features”

  • FACT:

99% of people complaining about the loss of the OtherOS feature never used the OtherOS feature.

  • Thank you SONY for moving so quickly. We all know that leaving the PS3 games monster so open and vulnerable would only lead to the funding of drug trafficking, prostitution and terrorism. For heavens sake think of the children. To be extra safe from this insidious USB exploit I have taken the precaution of removing them not only from my PS3, but every other usb enabled device I have.
Now just 1 left to remove from my PC……

  • can we get some sort of update that will allow me to actually post on facebook from my ps3 i can view and upload photos but i cant post comments accept friends etc is it my wirless connection not strong enough

  • Thank you, Sony. Any update that increases my security and enhances my PS3/PSN experience is a good update. Keep the patches and updates coming. Thanks for making my gameplaying a worry free experience and my non-gaming time on the PS3 easier and more fun.

  • there is an update for security…but, when will be available an update for play PS2 games? what about users, we need less updates for security and more update for playing…

  • I GoT Yellow Light of Death!!

  • @313 uh, so what? That doesn’t make it right. If they took away a feature that you use, but most people don’t, you’d want people to raise their voices about that, I’m sure.

  • I’m tired of asking for Matroska (.mkv) , Better PS2 BW compatibility and a better browser. Sony had ignored us completely all the time. The only reason keeping me from using this exploit is that I don’t want to lose my account. I would never think about breaking the PS3 if you just give us what we want. I just want the 3 things mentioned above and that’s all.

  • @319 use MKV2VOB

  • Why do you guys add a new theme? The background of the “Installing System Update” would make a great theme! and more visualizers for music

  • @320

I don’t like to encode stuff and besides it won’t encode soft subtitles. If a normal Samsung Blu-Ray player can do it why Sony can’t?

  • Thanks Sony. Hope this is for those hackers.

  • What’s up with these boring weak a$$ updates….?? you s&^*t heads.. !!!!!!!!!

  • I Hope We Get An Update This Year That Gives Us Some of the Things We’ve Been Asking For.
    – Multiple Logins
    – New XMB Update (Less Plain, Better Messaging, Better Looking Friend Cards
    – Updated Flash for Browser
    – And of Course Cross Game Voice So Everyone Can Stop Complaining!
    Not that i really want/need this…

  • This update stops NOTHING. Only slows down the enevitable. They have found the front door. It’s an up hill losing battle to try and stop them now. PS4 will hit sooner than we thought thanks to the hacker community.

  • @322 it’s not re-encoding it’s just adding some data to fool the PS3 into playing it. Takes like 30 seconds. Subtitles, can’t help you. Even the movies you rent on PS video store don’t have subs in my experience.

  • What a waste… There is so much potential power in the PS3 platform that will apparently never get tapped. I’d love to play OGG files… I’d like to have parental control on access to local files… The so-called “browser” in the PS3 sucks… All my PS2 and PS3 games are legal (though I bought most of them used) It would be nice to have some of my favorite games ALWAYS available instead of having to switch discs all the time – but I guess that goes with the “ownership” paranoia of big business “content” companies… Does this mean the NetFlix streaming without a separate disc is being released? (didn’t think so)

I think Sony is “dropping the ball” on this one… If they opened it up we could probably have an “android” compatibility layer giving access to all the same stuff an android-based phone is capable of but on your big screen, or…. (Hey SONY: The reason I OWN a PS3 instead of an XBOX is because I HATE closed companies… After shutting off the Linux OS option I am no longer sure you are ANY more open than Microsoft…)

  • out of curiosity.,.. what would cross game chat do to games that don’t support it? Like for example… every game currently out?

  • Sony again forces a gigantic, featureless update on us just to show who is boss. Taking away otherOS was false advertising (not even mentioning PS2 and SACD, which many want too).

Where’s the flac, hulu, internet radio, skype, mkv, pdf, subtitles, decent browser, etc? The PS3 is capable of way more than it does with its lame, annoying firmware. Pretty soon all the features will be whittled away.

  • @330 It’s not a gigantic update, it downloads in about 2 minutes. Ignorance FTW right?

  • what r these additional security feature?? :)

  • Wow you guys act like if you guys made games and are trying to keep pirates from giving money to the already rich people. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a pirate or hacker or anything like that cuz all that stuff brings nothing but problems and I wouldn’t even come close to messing up my PS3 im in luv with it too much. But seriously guys open up your eyes you all sound like you guys have been brain washed by sony and helping them make even more unnecessary money by advertising anti-piracy. Call me what you want but I believe what I say is true and maybe you all should at least look at both perspectives and then say what you want instead of kissing sony’s you know what and supporting their lack of effort to keep all of us happy with the features we actually want instead of features that are just enough to get us to buy the PS3 and practically steal our money. Reply to me I don’t care I’m not gonna argue nor am I going to check back in to see what you guys say. It’s just kinda ridiculous seeing you all help people who truly don’t wanna help you.

  • Of course is great to get rid of the hacking, but what about us who don’t do hacking? Chanse to get cool upgradings with Sony? not only the ps2 retrocompatibility but also NICE STUFF?

  • meanwhile, at the hall of justice…there is a store update coming, everyone get happy!

  • Since I will not have my ps3 jailbroken I’ll update anyway =). I’m pretty sure the hackers will find another way to jailbreak this update software.

  • Cool, a new update! What’s missing this time?

  • people wouldnt jailbreak if you added features that are requested ie cross game voice chat, invites, .mkv support.

  • @333 This should have nothing to do with features that could be added, this should be about Sony protecting its’ developers so we can get quality titles.

Everyone says “oh well it’s not for piracy, it’s for backups”. Not likely, there are already people sharing their backups around the world, effectively lowering the amount of sales that could have gone into PS3 games. I usually stand on the side of “it’s not a lost sale because they wouldn’t have bought it anyways”, but in the case of the PS3, it was sealed up until now. Therefore, there was no chance of “lost sales”.

Do you guys really think people would get a PS3 and not buy a SINGLE game in 4 years? Do you really think people would buy an expensive game console, and then twiddle their thumbs for a non-existent exploit? No, they’d go and buy the games they want to play because they can’t steal them.

This made the PS3 the best landscape for publishers. Now you have people spending the price of a game on some exploit that basically forces publishers to lower their funding.

This is not the same situation as PC, Wii, or 360; it is all together a different picture.

  • Wow, this update is useless. You can still get by this “patch” with the Jailbreak by a simple IP switch (not telling you what it is, pirates). Sony, you need to do something about this. I’m sick of these thieves taking up my time and ruining features.

  • so a useless update that is only to stop the PS3 Jailbreak, which will hackers will probably have a fix for really soon. How about updates that actually features that people want.

  • I demand that sony give us teh skypez for our ps3s! i want skype dammit and i want it now!

  • or otherwise i will jb my ps3 as a middle finger to sony

  • First off i would like to say i DO NOT Jailbreak my system.

With that out of the way, Sony really needs to just give up now on trying to stop Jailbreaking, look at the ipod touch/iphone, they have had countless jailbreak patches and the patches are rendered useless almost as soon as they are available. Don’t bother trying to stop Jailbreaks because you never will, instead put your time and energy into making the PS3 better. (same goes with PSP)

  • I updated my ps3 yesterday which is cool and all… but afterwards when i tried to go into the playstation store it gave me an error message saying, “Service not available in you Country/region.” so i got really annoyed is this due to the new update??? also Netflix doesn’t seem to work on my ps3, how do i fix this???

  • try calling sony troubleshooting

  • I hope this gets rid of the jailbreak hack. All they do is violate intellectual rights, waste developer’s time, and promise features that are quite impossible. For example, they promise PS2 emulation but PS2 emulation doesn’t even completely work for PC, the easily platform to develop for, after almost 10 years.

This is one mandatory update, I completely support.

  • Good update!

    Screw cheaters!

  • cheaters- frag ’em agree with 347

  • Ok seriously guys. Just because you didn’t get anything you want yet doesn’t mean you have to freak out. Security features are a good thing to have and just be patient because i’m sure they will have a good update soon.
