Blu-ray 3D Disc Playback Support Coming to PlayStation 3 System Next Week

Eric Lempel's Avatar + Posted by Eric Lempel on Sep 15, 2010 // VP, Sony Network Entertainment

Hi everyone, I wanted to share some news out of Tokyo Game Show. We’ve announced that the PS3 system will be able to play back 3D content on Blu-ray 3D discs with the next system software update (v.3.50), slated for release on September 21. We know that many consumers have purchased 3D TVs already and more of you will be purchasing them as the holidays approach – so we’re excited to offer this firmware update that makes all 38 million PS3s worldwide compatible with Blu-ray 3D discs.

This new feature expands the PS3’s 3D capabilities – as you may recall, we added the ability to play stereoscopic 3D games with the 3.30 firmware update in April.

While support for Blu-ray 3D discs is the primary new feature within the 3.50 update, there will be a few additional features. We’ll post more details on the blog prior to the firmware’s release, so check back here on Monday.

If possible, create a reward system that gives players some motivation to earn trophies. An example of this would be Avatars. Rather than charging $0.49 for an avatar, why not create a reward system that unlocks new Avatars for you to use depending on which game you play and what trophies you unlock? Each game that has trophies enabled has specific icons for trophies. Why not allow users to unlock these icons to use as Avatars? Every trophy contributes to the level up bar, so whatever trophies you earn during a specific level, once you level up, you unlock all the icons of all the trophies you earned to level up. For example. Level 1, you get 8 trophies from Flower, 10 from LBP and 2 from Batman Arkham Asylum. You level up to Level 2, and when you level up, ***you should get a notification*** AND you earn the exact icons of the 20 trophies across the 3 games you played to level up. Now THAT would be a sort of motivation to continue getting trophies. Everyone would now have unique Avatar icons to display. Sony’s 1st and 3rd party developers dont lose anything either since they’re developing the icons anyways, might as well allow them to be used as avatars.

So yet another stupid feature that actual gamers couldn’t care about, while breaking functionality we actually did use with yet another update.

Stay classy, $ony.
