Fallout: New Vegas for PS3: Meet the Companions

88 7

The Mojave Wasteland is a dangerous and desolate place… so you feel the need for some companionship during your adventure. Like Fallout 3, New Vegas allows you to have one humanoid and one non-humanoid companion at any time.

Fallout: New Vegas’ senior producer, Jason Bergman, has put together a list of bios for the companions you’ll meet throughout the Wasteland. Learn more about them below. [Warning: some spoilers below]

Humanoid Companions

Arcade

Fallout: New Vegas for PS3: Arcade

  • Race: Human
  • Ethnicity: Caucasian
  • Age: 35
  • Profession: Doctor, Followers of the Apocalypse New Vegas Chapter
  • Perk: Better Healing – While Arcade is a companion, the player regains more health from all sources.
  • Description: Arcade is highly ethical and moral, but he understands the post apocalyptic world is one in which sometimes, people just have to be shot in the head. Most of Arcade’s concerns about the world around him have to do with large-scale issues rather than the needs of individuals. While he appreciates what individual people go through, he firmly believes that it’s more important to affect large-scale societal change than fix problems little by little.

Boone

Fallout: New Vegas for PS3: Boone

  • Full Name: Craig Boone
  • Sex: Male
  • Race: Human
  • Ethnicity: Caucasian
  • Age: 26
  • Profession: Town guard, Novac

  • Description: Boone is a town guard and former NCR sharpshooter, bitterly whittling away the hours until he can find out who’s responsible for his wife’s death — and kill them. Hardened and psychologically troubled from his time in the NCR military, Boone vacillates between being a stone-cold killer and a decent human being. Venturing out from the relative safety of Novac brings Boone into close contact with his old life until he is forced to deal with the tragic events that caused him to leave the military.

Cass

Fallout: New Vegas for PS3: Cass

  • Full Name: Rose of Sharon Cassidy
  • Sex: Female
  • Race: Human
  • Ethnicity: Caucasian
  • Age: 37
  • Profession: Water merchant, owner of Cassidy Caravans
  • Perk: Whiskey Rose – While Cass is a companion, she and the player gain Damage Threshold when they drink Whiskey. Additionally, the player does not suffer intelligence loss from consuming alcohol and ignores the negative effects of alcohol addiction.
  • Description: Worn down by years of hard luck and a recent rash of terrible misfortunes, Cass is a despondent merchant who’s about to get out of the caravan business. She’s smart, tough, and steady with a gun, but she hasn’t been savvy enough to survive the ruthless caravan wars that have flared up in Nevada since NCR’s expansion. Though she’s quick to join up with the player for some easy money, she’s still interested in finding out if she’s been suffering from bad luck or something more sinister.

  • Sex: Super Mutant
  • Race: Nightkin Super Mutant
  • Age: 203

  • Perk: Stealth Girl – While Lily is a companion, the duration of Stealth Boys is increased by 200% and all Sneak Attack Critical Hits do an additional 10% damage.
  • Description: Though she now lives a peaceful life tending to Bighorners in the community of Jacobstown, Lily was once a Nightkin in The Master’s army. Before that, she was an elderly grandmother enjoying a simple life in Vault 17. Heavily medicated, Lily struggles with her dangerous schizophrenia and distant memories of her old life.

Raul

Fallout: New Vegas for PS3: Raul

  • Full Name: Raul Alfonso Tejada
  • Sex: Male
  • Race: Ghoul
  • Ethnicity: Meztiso
  • Age: 230
  • Profession: Repairman (Black Mountain), Vaquero (pre-war)
  • Perk: Regular Maintenance – While Raul is a companion, the Condition of weapons and armor decays 50% slower.
  • Description: Raul is an old Mexican ghoul who has had a long and storied history. After living the life of a wild gunslinger, Raul took up the trade of a simple repairman in Nevada. While traveling to New Vegas, he was swiped by Nightkin from Black Mountain and imprisoned by their leader, Tabitha. After being freed from captivity, he will join the player out of gratitude. A new taste of adventure reminds Raul of his tumultuous past, prompting him to consider if he should embrace his old gunslinging ways.

Veronica

Fallout: New Vegas for PS3: Veronica

  • Full Name: Veronica Renata Santangelo
  • Sex: Female
  • Age: 27
  • Ethnicity: Caucasian
  • Profession: Journeyman Scribe, Procurement Specialist, Brotherhood of Steel, Hidden Valley Bunker
  • Perk: Scribe Assistant – while Veronica is a companion, the player can craft Workbench items through Veronica’s dialogue.
  • Description: Veronica is a Brotherhood of Steel journeyman scribe who has been indefinitely assigned to the role of “procurement specialist”, responsible for venturing out of the Brotherhood bunker to find and acquire resources that the Brotherhood cannot create on its own. Irritated by what she sees as the Brotherhood’s unrealistic and uninformed views of themselves and the world, Veronica is a perpetual outsider caught between her loyalty to the Brotherhood and troubling doubts about the validity of their current course.

Non-Humanoid

ED-E

Fallout: New Vegas for PS3: ED-E

  • Full Name: Eyebot (Duraframe) – Subject E
  • Sex: N/A
  • Age: 6
  • Ethnicity: N/A
  • Profession: Shop Security, Primm
  • Perk: Enhanced Sensors – while ED-E is a companion, the player can detect enemies at an increased range. Additionally, enemies will appear on the player’s compass and can be targeted in V.A.T.S. even when cloaked.
  • Description: Unlike standard eyebots, ED-E is a highly customized “duraframe” model with hardened armor and specialized weapons. It was an eyebot on an incredible journey, carrying an enormous amount of valuable data when it was badly damaged and taken in by a Primm shop owner. Though ED-E still retains all of its data and an understanding of its mission, its internal positioning hardware is badly damaged. The only reason it has not been seized by interested parties is because ED-E has not communicated its special mission to anyone.

Rex

Fallout: New Vegas for PS3: Rex

  • Full Name: Cyber-Hound Mk. III, LEO Support Model, Serial Number B955883
  • Sex: N/A
  • Age: 209
  • Ethnicity: N/A
  • Profession: Sidekick to The King
  • Perk: Search and Mark – While Rex is a companion, unequipped chems, firearms, and ammunition within a short distance are highlighted when you zoom the camera.
  • Description: Rex is a cybernetic dog that has been around since pre-war times. He was used by the Denver Police Department and Caesar’s Legion before being mostly blown up during the Battle of Hoover Dam. Since then, he’s been the loyal pet of The King of The Kings in Freeside. Capable of sniffing out loot and taking a large amount of punishment, he only has one (big) problem: his brain is starting to deteriorate.

  • Can’t wait. Hopefully they support this game with plenty of DLC just like Fallout 3.

  • i hope the game isnt glitchy and washed out compared to fallout 3 on PS3…

  • Rex Mk.III? sounds a bit like Metal Gear, lol. Anyway Rex looks cool :)

  • Questions for Bethesda
    1) Have you guys ever heard of Q&A for a game? Because everyone can tell that Fallout 3, DLC, and Game of the Year Edition had the most bugs, glitches, and freeze issues on the PS3 and other consoles for that matter. So can we expect this new Fallout to freeze every 20 minutes and do PS3 owners have to wait 9 months later just for the DLC while the other console enjoy them 9 months before PS3 owners?

2)Have you guys tweaks your game engine to actually make it run decent on the PS3? Fallout 3 was a horrible port to the PS3 when compare to the other versions.

  • As someone who absolutely LOVED Fallout 3 (even got the Platinum Trophy including all expansions) I have to ask.

Will this game be stable? I can’t count how many times Fallout 3 crashed my PS3. As a matter of fact, I was barley able to make it through a few of the expansions, and tried several times (all but 1 resulting in freeze up) to do Mothership Zeta.

As I stated, I LOVE Fallout, but I will NOT be buying this if it is not playable. Fallout 3 was barley playable, and severely hampered from a technical perspective.

Please, for the love of Vault-tec, make this game stable enough to play.

    -A Lover of Fallout

  • Hey Matt, will we be able to have more than one follower able to follow us at any point in time, or are we restricted to just having one follower. I’d love to have all of them just follow me around at the same time, it’s like having my own mini-army. :D

    Thanks!

  • I didn’t know Fallout 3 was getting re-released.

  • Sure it froze up a few times on me but not that bad! In the whole time I played Fallout 3 (75+ hours) it froze my PS3 maybe 3 times. Maybe you guys just don’t take care of ur PS3. Fallout 3 was very playable for me….and the times it did freeze…my saved data file was like over 9000kb.

  • will this game be as buggy as Fallout 3?
will there be exclusives that we wont… wait we will get?

  • @Sarno1605 You are one of the very few lucky individuals. I could agree with you about not taking care of PS3s if the freezing was isolated but when 80%+ of the PS3 community is experiencing freezes it seems to be more than not taking care of a console.

Anyway, I am noticing there is no Dogmeat on this list of characters. That’s upsetting as Dogmeat has been a staple of the series for well, ever. Also, is there any chance in h@%$ that we will ever get a sequel to the original two games? Even a PSN download or something? That would be brilliant.

    • Hi there

Trekking from the Capital Wasteland to the Mojave Wasteland is a long trek… so you won’t be seeing Dogmeat.

  • I bought Fallout 3 and it froze up on me about 25 min into the game, returned it and got motorstorm 2. Let’s hope this one runs better.

  • Can’t wait, already pre ordered.

Can you guys please put up some avatars? Please!?! I’ve always wanted to have pipboy as my avatar!

  • i can not wait for this game to arrive. fallout 3 was so awesome, that i know this one can only be that much better. with every person i beat down in this game, i will be imagining politicians i anxiously want to see out of office come november.
would be extremely nice for ps3 owners to get a demo to try out before the game arrives, so we can have a feel for the game once it gets here.

  • @BloodyCow Leave that to the past, this is the present. Fallout: New Vegas is almost here and I can’t wait.

  • Can’t wait for New Vegas. I loved Fallout 3. Couple of questions…

If you companions get killed in combat are they dead forever?

Cause I liked having Dogmeat around in the last game but it felt I could never go adventuring with him cause he would die to quickly and I would have to reload my save and send him so home.

In hardcore mode do your companions have the same handycaps as you do? Such as ammo has weight, need to by hydrated and so forth.

  • I don’t know what everyone is talking about! Fallout 3 GOTY froze only 2 times during my 300+ hours of gameplay & platinum trophy includiong DLC. Like sarno said… “Maybe you guys don’t take care of your PS3’s”…

  • BTW… can’t wait for this game! Have the collectors edition of both the game & guide pre-orderd & paid off at my local GameStop!

  • I loved Fallout 3, but there is no way I am touching this game after all the bugs and glitches I experienced in the original. Will pick up the GOTY version next year with all DLC, thanks.

  • What kind of weapons does each companion handle?

    • Using the game’s companion wheel, you can give companions any weapons, but each one has certain types of weapons that they’re best at. For instance, Boone is a sniper, Veronica loves her Power Fist, or anything else that lets her punch people. Lily is armed with a custom sword made from a vertibird blade and is generally melee-heavy. Raul likes pistols (he was a Vaquero, after all). Cass prefers rifles. Arcade is more of a thinker than a fighter, but he’s good with energy weapons.

  • @RGS-14 You mean Vault-boy cuz a little computer for ur avatar idk is a bit weird

  • The future looks ethnically profiled ….
seriously.. I loved Fallout 2 (platinum) and can not wait to pick this up!

  • correction Fallout 3 (platinum).

  • @DarthVyper A lot of ppl got problems with FO3 is not a problem of “Taking care of ur ps3” if ur save is a 10mb save it freeze a lot, is not your ps3 if you explore 2 much the world of fallout 3 starts beging laggy, the same if you kill too much. All that info, everything u do is saved. The game have a limit and thats a big problem of playing on consoles, the console have a limit.

  • Cool info! This is one of my most anticipated games this year. I already have the special edition pre-ordered on Amazon. I decided to go with the Xbox 360 version, since Fallout 3 seemed a little more stable on that platform (I never experienced any freezing or reset glitches, and I put in well over 100 hours), and because the DLC will probably be released a lot sooner.

  • My VATS always stops working so I stopped playing FO3 at level 6.

  • yea this game looks cool. i LOVED fallout 3 and played it a million times….until it started crashing. i just hope you guys fix the bugs before it comes out. im gonna buy this and hope for the best. i love the companions like lily.

  • Hey look, Bethesda ignores the ps3 fans even after posting on the official Playstation blog.

I doubt we’ll see any stability improvement over Fallout 3. I doubt they’re even taking the time to read these comments.

As for the DLC, we’re probably going to get it at the same time as the 360. PS3 is much more a contender now than it was two years ago.

  • @gumi42: Only in Hardcore Mode will companions get killed in combat. They will simply be knocked out in normal mode.

In Hardcore Mode, companion ammo has weight, but you won’t need to worry about their hydration and so forth.

  • This game could crash all day long and shoot me in the face every time it does, I don’t care. It’s Fallout. It looks good. Buying it day one.

  • I hope that Bathesda actually delivers a good game on the PS3 this time.

Fallout 3 was a disaster. Probably one of the worst ports in PS3 history. It was buggy, graphically below all standards, it corrupted your save files and the game froze way too often.

I can’t believe that Sony actually allowed this game to be released on the PS3, considering their QA.

  • @Figroti: There were changes made to the PS3 code-base that should improve stability, but won’t know for sure until a couple million PS3 owners pound on it.

  • Already bought this game :) Just waiting for the release date!

  • @jamaicanTHUG: Remove your Rock Band 2/Guitar Hero wireless adapter (or anything else plugged into USB 1 other than the controller) from the USB port, and VATS works again like magic.

  • Eff I can’t effing wait for this effing game!!!!! It’s going to be effing awesome!!!!!Eff I can’t effing contain my effing self!!!!!….lol Eff

  • I can’t shake the feeling that this game is just a add-on to fallout 3 that’s being sold at full price, but at the same time I’m not sure how long I can resist a fallout game.

  • This is going to be a tough choice. My preliminary plan is to take Lilian the first chance I get. Traveling with a heavily medicated schitzo…sounds like a party to me. It looks like she can kick some boo-tay as well.

  • Fallout 3 was amazing, despite the constant fear of a crash. I know you said it will be stable Matt, but I’ll believe it when I see it. I know Bethesda’s history of bugs, it’s not pretty.

I’m getting it regardless though, after over 100 hours of exploring and getting every single trophy in Fallout 3 and the DLC I was like “Noooo, I need more!”.

  • Please please do not make DLC exclusive to one platform. It always annoys me when one gets it first and everyone else has to wait months to get it.

  • Omg I want Rex like right this minute NOW.

  • Wow. The game looks really cool. The dog with his brain showing is so very freaky/cool. The robot looks neat too. Man, there is just way too many great games coming out soon…

  • for everyone worrying about it freezing. New Vegas is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, not Bethesda Game Studios (who did Fallout 3). So it’s different people who I’m sure a well aware of the failures of Fallout 3 and most noticeably the GOTY edition. And seeing as it looks like it’s running in an identical way as Fallout 3 i’m sure the focus is making sure it runs smoothly and not actually building it from scratch.

  • Matt,

I don’t care about realism but for the love of god add dogmeat.
He’s man’s best friend. Add him in DLC form for 0.25$ or something

  • @ wesssss21 Don’t qoute me on it but I’m pretty sure they developed from the ground up or at least modified the engine, pretty sure it is a new engine though. Think I read it somewhere but can’t remember where…

    • New Vegas still uses the Fallout 3 engine, but there are refinements, and the guys at Obsidian worked on plenty of new gameplay features — being able to aim down iron sights, hardcore mode, having factions and reputation… lots of cool new stuff.

  • OMG an eyebot thats armored and I thought Victor would be the robot RL3 replacement im so gonna get it I really realy really hope hes super strong like RL3 im pumped for this game I guess this ED-E is the eyebot from the trailer.

  • Thanks for the answer Matt. I guess Rex will have to suffice as a Dogmeat replacement. Though it boggles the mind how he went from New California to the Capital Wasteland and can’t be arsed to make it half way back :-P

Anyway, maybe like blacklight said, he could be motivated into making the trek through some add-on content :-)

    Looking forward to New Vegas.

  • So I have to ask.

What would it take for a Move-enabled Fallout New Vegas?

    • Sorry, that’s not something we’re planning for New Vegas. Move is pretty great though…. I had a fun time watching people use it at PAX.

  • Loving the line of companions! This game is surely going to be epic when it comes out next year! However, I won’t sit and deny how it does irk me just a bit that Lily, even though I plan to have her as my companion for sure, looks the way she does, being a mutant, and mentally ill, that out of all the races in the world…African was picked to be her ethnicity.

Now, I won’t blow this up out of proportion, but I will say, I would love to hear from the very person who thought that would be suitable for her to be african looking and behaving the way she does. It makes me thing that the character developers feel that that is how black women look and behave.

Seems as a black lady gamer, I still have to educate the men and women of the gaming world.

  • haha a 209 year old half robot dog! awesome Bethesda!

  • The companion missions sound like they’ll be fun…can’t wait until next month!

  • @ RGS-14

I really want those avatars also. Like make all of the trophy icons for the FO3 (i got the platinum so i know they are good) and make them all available please.
