Swords & Soldiers Coming Soon to PSN

Hi everyone, Fabian here from Ronimo Games, and I’m here to tell you about our upcoming PlayStation Network game: Swords & Soldiers! Swords & Soldiers is a side scrolling real time strategy game, in which three unique factions battle each other: the brutal Vikings, the devious Aztecs and the cunning Chinese, across 30 missions to reach a giant pepper.

Each faction has their own reasons to chase after this giant pepper. The Vikings want epic BBQ sauce, the Chinese child emperor wants the pepper’s mind-bending powers and the Aztecs are trying to keep it so they can win the annual vegetable growing contest! During their campaigns you’ll also unlock some leader board-enabled challenge modes to give you some more room to show off your skills.

We’re also really excited to present a 3-D mode for Swords & Soldiers so that everyone can experience the game in another dimension.

So, a side scrolling strategy game, how does that work? Well basically it plays like a mix between an RTS and a fighting game. You build units and cast spells to try and push the opponent backwards until you’ve finally destroyed his castle.

Of course, getting there is not that simple. Each of your units has its strength, weakness and specific use on the battlefield. There are heavy melee units, fast moving poisoned dart blowers, enemy-confusing monkeys and lots of other units to choose from. You’ll have to carefully consider spending money on the right units and upgrades; especially since buying upgrades means not buying units which, in turn, gives your opponent more room to breathe and push onwards to your base.

Campaign - PoisonMultiplayer 04

Then there are the spells, your means of directly affecting the Battlefield. Say there’s this nasty Necromancer moving towards your base and your units can’t get to him because he generates Skeletons and sticks behind those. Will you use the Lightning spell to take him out? Or will you use a Snowstorm to freeze the Skeletons so your units can take them out and reach the Necromancer by themselves? It’s choices like these which you’ll have to make all the time if you want to get to your opponents’ base and trash it.

When you’re done trashing everyone in the room using the splitscreen multiplayer, you can take the battle online! It’s really simple, whenever you play Swords & Soldiers and you feel like humiliating some other humans online, just press select or choose ‘online’ from the main or pause menu. The game will then start searching for other players while you can still carry on your quest for that mind-bending pepper or play any other part of the single player content. Then when a player is found, your current game will be saved, you show that guy who’s boss, and then you’ll be returned to where you left off. So it’s all seamless, enabling you to show the world that the Aztecs are superior whenever you like. Or the Chinese or Vikings, whichever faction you prefer.

Swords & Soldiers will launch early to PlayStation Plus users on 9/21 and will be available to everyone on 9/28. In a few short days, it’s on! We’re looking forward to what tactics and strategies you guys come up with to break our defenses. So get online and join the battle!

  • Interesting….

  • I loved this game on the Wii. I am interested in getting it on the PS3, but am curios if there is anything new in this version (besides HD and 3D0, of course)

    • Well, there’s online multiplayer which we’re very excited about!

Also, the control scheme had to be reworked and we’re very happy with the results. Most of us prefer the dual analog stick controls nowadays.

  • Looks really nice, though it’s not really my genre.

  • This game was REALLY good on Wii, so this is pretty cool to see it in HD glory. Interested to say the least.

  • This will support the PSmove right? If it uses the dual shock you can split everyone up online, with one group for people playing with move and another playing with dual shock. I played this on the wii from start to finish and always wanted online play, so please don’t leave out the PSmove!

  • I get the feeling there’s supposed to be a video up top. I have a blank area that, in the preview only, says “/endif” or something like that.

Anyway, I’ve said it all along- giant peppers don’t play a nearly-large-enough role in today’s games. Good for you guys, leading the charge. I’m also glad RTSs (RTS-likes) are showing up more lately- consoles usually don’t see anything like that.

And love for the PS+ members- that’s a good thing too. ^^

  • Where is the video?

  • There’s something worng with your blog – no video – just empty space.

    Anyway – Happy Friday!

  • when will this launch in europe? BTW it looks awsome!!!!

  • Game looks great, we need more side-scrollers, in every flavor we can! Any future releases on the way from you guys?

  • Is there Move support?

  • Any sepcial discounts for PS + users as well?

  • The game looks really good and seen as most people played it on wii and say good things about it look like is a really nice game.(i dont have a wii) Also is just 9.99 so is kind ok

  • Please support Move as soon as possible, because once this game has Move support im buying it!!

  • Looks good

  • I love the look; reminds me of Critter Crunch and PixelJunk Monsters, both of which we loved.

Does the game render in 1080p natively when in 2D mode? Are the animation assets optimized for 1080p display, or just scaled up from 720p?

    Is there local, same-screen (i.e. *not* split-screen) co-op?

Who’s doing the music? Is the music and/or explosion assets 24-bit and/or losslessly compressed? Will it correctly output as LPCM over HDMI with just one decode/mix pass? (Some game decode from MP3 into Dolby Digital, then to LPCM: it sounds as awful as most WiiWare games.)

It’s cool to see some of the more interesting WiiWare titles making their way to PSN. I really liked Voodoo Dice. Hopefully the Bit.Trip, Lost Winds, and Strongbad series’ of games makes it soon :)

Thanks in advance for answering the questions!

    • The game renders to 1080p and the assets were made for 1080p. I’m unsure about the audio output, but the music and effects were made by a Dutch game audio company called Sonic Picnic.

  • I’m a big viking fan, so I’ll definitely want to play as them first, but the Chinese looks great too!

  • This is far and away my favorite Wiiware game with over 80 hours put in between me and my 2 sons who like to play 2 player. I may be willing to pay for it again depending on how it controls, so I’m really anxious for the demo/beta whatever we PS+ subscribers are supposed to be getting soon (at least I think I remember reading that somehwere).

1 question / request – it took me over 3 hours to first die, and then again to beat the last level. Please reword the instructions to use Pokie to kill all the “goldminers” as opposed to the generic “workers”. Besides that, excellent.

For those who don’t know, this isn’t a tower defense game, it’s more a tower attack game, and it’s silly.

    • Those texts haven’t changed, sorry. We did make the final levels of each campaign a bit easier because we got some complaints that they were taking too long.

  • This really interests me, for 9.99 it sounds like a lock for me. Its still kinda confusing on what you do though.

  • Thats a pretty cool looking PSN Minis game.

  • Mouse support would be even better than Move in my opinion. Probably a lot easier to implement as well. Dual mouse compatibility on the other hand…

  • Looks like Patapon.

  • Dugeons & Dragons,
    Mazes & Monsters
    Swords & Soldiers…

    What’s next?

  • Video is now working, I use Explorer.

  • I’ve been following this title since it was announced for PSN. Now that I know the release date and price, only thing left to do is wait… Until the 28th(Not a PS+ Sub) :/

  • How difficult is this game, and how difficult are the trophies? The colourful art style makes it look like an easy game, but looks can be deceiving.

As an example, I brought Mushroom Wars because the art style was very charming, but it was too difficult for my taste. I eventually beat it but I needed Youtube for help.

    • It starts off very easy, but it can get challenging in the later levels. It should still be very doable though. We did a lot of playtesting to make sure users are able to finish the game normally.

  • Thanks for answering the 1080p question, and for acknowledging you didn’t know about the audio encoding.

Can you also tell us if there is local co-op? same-screen (preferred) or split-screen?

    Thanks again!

  • Is there a demo? Looks great.

  • day 1 for me…

  • Loving the Aztec or Mayan class. Definitely going to purchase this when it comes out.

  • So it has a basic 3D where you can wear the colored glasses, will there be an option for the upgraded 3D for those who bought a 3d tv? Great game though. Think Im going to enjoy playing this till the release of New Vegas.
