Netflix on PS3: Disc-free Next Week

Greg Peters's Avatar + Posted by Greg Peters on Oct 14, 2010 // VP of Product Development, Netflix

If you instantly watch movies and TV shows from Netflix on your PS3, here is the news you’ve been waiting for: starting Monday, October 18 you’ll be able to instantly watch movies and TV shows without inserting an instant streaming disc into your console.

In addition to eliminating the disc, there is a new user interface that brings a much richer and faster browsing experience, content search directly on the device, and dramatic improvements in how fast playback starts.

Netflix PS3

There is even more good news for PS3 owners: starting on Monday you’ll be able to instantly watch some movies and TV shows in 1080i 1080p high definition, listen to Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound, and view an increasing portion of our content library with subtitles. This will bring the home theater experience right to your living room and make instantly watching movies even more enjoyable. Here’s a news release from Netflix and Dolby with details.

Check out these improvements and continue to enjoy watching TV shows and movies streamed from Netflix.

Can you browse and add movies that are not for instant viewing? The PS3 app is much more pleasant looking than Netflix.com

Will the audio bitrate be determined dynamically, like the video?

What is the maximum DD+ bitrate for 2.0 and 5.1 streams?

Does this also mean a higher tier of video bitrates beyond 3.8mbit/sec for 720p content?

I’ve been pretty happy with the video quality (when it’s encoded from an HD source and not DVD), but the current audio quality makes dialogue unintelligible at normal volume about half the time.

Can we configure the app to update our PSN status with what movie/show we’re watching?

Hi guys, Could you speak with the folks at netflix and get them to add some stuff to the Canadian netflix to help at least approach the US one?

Also can you also ask them about the Instant que option for Canada?

Thanks

@LordRaoh: Yes, the Blu-ray remote is supported (wife prefers that over the controller). I know our selection in Canada isn’t that of the US, but there’s enough movies/TV shows/anime to keep me entertained for some time to come. :)

My only problem so far is the picture ratio is off on some movies. Tried to watch (500) Days of Summer and it was HD but filled the 16×9 screen when the movie is really supposed to be 2.35:1 (letterboxed). Only way to watch it in correct format was on my pc connected to the same tv but it only runs in low def.

I know its not Sony’s fault…but the Canadian Netflix sucks. There are hardly any good movies or tv shows on there at all and there is no reason for it!

Both Netflix and Lovefilm use the Widevine cross platform player/DRM app. For more info goto widevine.com

On Monday a Icon will appear and you can go to the PSN store to download the Widevine “thin” player/DRM inside a Sony shell. The first time the “Thin” cross platform player (read Javascript UI) connects it will download the javascript UI from Netflix.

UI Icons for the Netflix player appear to be larger than Lovefilms, possibly for touch screen Cell phones and other small screens.

That’s cool but what would be cooler would be adding Google TV to the PS3. Also making a PS3 Slim with Google TV and a HDMI input.
