362 0

If you instantly watch movies and TV shows from Netflix on your PS3, here is the news you’ve been waiting for: starting Monday, October 18 you’ll be able to instantly watch movies and TV shows without inserting an instant streaming disc into your console.

In addition to eliminating the disc, there is a new user interface that brings a much richer and faster browsing experience, content search directly on the device, and dramatic improvements in how fast playback starts.

Netflix PS3

There is even more good news for PS3 owners: starting on Monday you’ll be able to instantly watch some movies and TV shows in 1080i 1080p high definition, listen to Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound, and view an increasing portion of our content library with subtitles. This will bring the home theater experience right to your living room and make instantly watching movies even more enjoyable. Here’s a news release from Netflix and Dolby with details.

Check out these improvements and continue to enjoy watching TV shows and movies streamed from Netflix.

  • Sigh, scratch that question (wish there was a delete). I just realized this doesn’t start until the 18th.

  • So does this new version have an up-scaler like the 360 Netflix? I get a little tired of watching all the old shows in 480p not upscaled, they look like garbage and all grainy on the PS3.

  • They need to add these things to this app so its top of the line.

    1. play all option for episodes so you don’t have to click play on every single episode, very convenient if your wanting to watch episodes before going to sleep.

    2. Add every single movie to the categories. I can’t always think of a title to search for so why not add the whole library to the app??

    and one question

Can you access your XMB from netflix app?

  • Can you access the XMB while using the new Netflix app?

  • This looks so much better than the current version. However, after watching the demo, it appears there is no separation of TV Shows and Movies in the instant queue. It would be a really nice if that was a feature of the interface.

  • Okay its the 18Th I’m very impatient. What time is the app going to launch?

  • so its the 18th, no icon in video column or the whats new? how do i get the netflix app?

  • I’m guessing it’ll launch midnight PDT. Sorry east-coasters.

  • no more disc? what the hell am i gonna do with the disc afterwards?…..a coaster i guess?

its about time, thank you sony, for getting something right, lol jk

now if yall can just get Gran Turismo 5 out before December, hmm

  • Its past midnight through out the united states. Yet i still dont have the app. This suspense is killing me!

  • Just turned on my PS3 and no Netflix app. I checked the Playstation store and don’t see it there either. Is this rolling out in waves?

  • its 6:15 where is it what time is it coming out

  • In case anyone is having any issues finding this app it’s under “what’s new”. Well done!

  • Running it now and wow its fast and clean. Thx Sony

  • Unfortunately it’s not for everyone. I have a playstation 3 since launch day and I subscribe to netflix, can I go disc free? Unfortunately, no because I purchased a PAL PS3 on launch day in Ireland, prior to moving to the US in 2008. So while I can install the netflix app I can’t use it. All of which means I’m stuck with the disc-based version.

So no disc-less netflix, no access the psone classics I purchased and downloaded in Ireland (576i won’t output on my NTSC tv), no access to love film, no access to bbc’s iplayer. I’ve got the worst of both worlds. The lesson, don’t move from one region to another, it’s not approved of.

  • I cant find anything that is 1080p or 1080i for that matter. Can anyone tell me what in the Netflix library is 1080p so that i can test it.

  • So far … looks really good. Bluetooth keyboard is used. As for navigating the instant queue, you no longer have to re-move the joystick or re-press the right arrow for every single title, you can hold it down and it will scroll to the end of the row of five – and you can move down to jump to the next row of 5, so you can get around more quickly than before.

  • And now for the crime of owning a PAL playstation 3 while living in the US, not only can I not go disc-less I’ve also lost the ability to play the disc-based version. This is beginning to get more than a little frustrating……..

  • About time. It was a hard sell to my friends when suggesting a PS3. ONLY because of the Netflix GUI that was currently available at the time. I was actually favoring the Wii’s interface over PS3. Good job in getting this rolled out :)

    Thank-you

  • Will this work in Puerto Rico?

  • My small 2 cents of a review on Netflix for PS3. AMAZING!!! Completely leap frogs Xbox 360’s version. And when I mean Xbox 360’s version, I mean the most current up to date one since they had a small update for it. The PS3 loads faster and browses through movies faster as well. I also noticed when choosing a movie, it loads pretty fast, I’d say about 2-3 seconds faster than the 360’s. I love the new GUI for the PS3, I think it was totally worth the wait, they got it completely right this time. Good job, Sony!

  • Wow, thank you so much for this update! I can’t believe how night and day the difference is between the versions now. Just like a few comments above state, the ps3 version has always been the slowpoke of the netflix family. I just can’t believe how fast it is. Usually I’d have to stare at retrieving data for 10-15 seconds while my screen glitched out before it started playing. Now it literally skyrockets to the right and starts up without a hiccup in 2-3. I can’t even begin to express how thankful I am, but great job Netflix and Sony!

  • where is the 5.1 I only have 2 channel pcm. it coming soon

  • Home for a break Netflix download!!!! – I did have to sign up for the playstation network to download it – kinda lame – as I never use it – I do not have to sign up for anything to download games on my WII? – so what gives?
Ill forgive it however as netflix on PS is WAAAAAAyyyyy cool!
I like it, and will use it more often – may even get rid of cable!!

    Thanks SONY!!!

    – um any chance of getting back my linux install? My HD still has the used up space so it is there – but not accessible.

I guess I can live with it, as I have netflix – now how about HULU? Then you would be really cool sony –

Any one else have thoughts about HULU on PS3?

  • Let me guess…

    Once again…

    US ONLY

Sony should deliver the same content worldwide, and not benefit the bigger countries and forget small countries

  • Netflix app keeps freezing upon launch on my 80GB BC “Fat” PS3, so no goodies here.

    /RANT/

Of the past five firmware updates, and now including this Netflix app, they have screwed up my PS3 in some way. I am NOT going to reformat my PS3 yet again just to watch this stuff, because that is the advice I always get from PlayStation support.

(Seriously…someone needs to tell them they can deviate from the script sometimes…it might actually be good for them.)

    /END RANT/

  • @275 – Can’t blame Sony for this, that is Netflix. Netflix can only deliver in countries that they are in, and they aren’t anywhere but Canada and US with no plans to expand beyond there.

  • im new at this app for ps3 how do you turn on sub titles lol

  • When are we getting Cross game Chat?

  • I have just tried that and can’t resume play. How do you resume play if you stop the movie and want to finish it later?

  • About time! Now I can stop using my 360 for Netflix and make my PS3 a dedicated movie player (along with blurays).

  • It is awesome but the move does not work on it. Unless you have a navigational controller.

  • I’m really REALLY in need of some support here. I have a Japanese system but live here in California, and the program won’t launch because of region restrictions. This some thing is happening to someone else on another forum. The disc is useless in 30days, anyone have info or suggestions on what I can do other than buying ANOTHER ps3?

  • Just loaded the new Netflix program. I’m not able to fast forward and reverse during playback as I could with the disk. What controls on the PS3 controller control these functions?

  • It was great with the left side menu layout when I used it earlier today. I started it up a minute ago, however, and it has been changed horrendously! It WAS fantastic with the left side menu, but now it is HORRIBLE with having to go up and down through all the genres! Put it back how it was!

  • Yeah I have the same issue.. whats going on here?? it was amazing.. now its crap again what gives?

  • UPDATE:

Bring back the ealier version!!!! PLEASE!

Was about to show the new Netflix PS3 app to the fiancee, to show her how awesome it was…only to find it replaced with something that’s plain old functional, but not cool.

  • I downloaded the App, I played with it, I hate it. I do love how the app in the video looks nothing like what I downloaded, thats nice… I’m not going to retype everything so here’s a link to my blog post on this worthless App. http://oppy1984.blogspot.com/2010/10/ps3-netflix-app.html

I would love to hear what others have to say, I bet I’m not the only one who thinks this App sucks.

  • This update has fried my PS3, don’t do it. My wife was watching a movie about 30 mins ago and my ps3 turned off and it won’t come back on. It’s fried….I can’t use my ps3 at all. It has a blinking red light….thanks Netflix.

  • how do you know what’s in 1080p and 5.1 ss?

  • I’m with comment #266 – pottyvick. Anyone know how to tell what videos are in HD? I don’t see any indicator.

Is there any way to expand the movie information pane?

This app looks tossed together between cocktail parties. Did someone phone this app in?

  • It seems incredibly glitchy and does not function properly.
It says version 2.0 but it looks like it downgraded to the beta version. Very square and poorly organized, laggy
Not smooth and neatly organized like it was earlier.

  • Hey Sony GUESS WHAT? I live in Puerto Rico and I CANNOT STREAM S***! Thanks for the USELESS NETFLIX App, you guys rock!

  • ok…where did my volume control run off to?

It is actually a necessary feature with netflix films.

  • Is there any way to switch it from “SD” to “HD”? Because I can’t seem to find the option to change it because I would really like to enjoy the TV shows and Movies I pay for and watch in HD quality.

    Thanks in advance.

  • AcEdYaBoOtAy: It will automatically switch between SD and HD depending on available bandwidth. Also, some shows are not available for HD streaming and will therefore only stream SD.

  • My discless netflix looks nothing like it does in the video.

it looks like the Wii’s discless interface and i feel cheated.

was working fine this morning and looked like the video but now its just crap. I feel let down.

  • What happened to the interface that I was using this morning? It was the same one that was in the video. This new one is more buggy and less intuitive. Bring back the version from the video up above.

  • DVD_Sandwich Thank you so much for the help bro, thought it something wrong with my TV or PS3 haha. Thanks again man.

  • Put it back to the way it was. Was much better this morning. Another promise of something great only for it to be patched and to look like crap.

I looked through the notes and noticed it was because they updated (downgraded) the app. Very Disappointed.
