Your Fallout: New Vegas PS3 Questions Answered: Hardcore Mode, Morality, Combat and More

161 0

Come next week, many of you will begin your adventures in Fallout: New Vegas – attempting to explore every nook, cranny, and Vault found within in and around Mojave Wasteland. Before your journey begins, we thought we’d answer some last-minute questions sent by you via Facebook and Twitter.

Fallout: New Vegas PS3

I’m afraid it’s going to feel like DLC. Are there enough changes to make New Vegas feel unique from Fallout 3? (thanks @acsguitar)

We certainly think so! While the gameplay is similar, the world itself is very, very different. And our main storyline plays out in a very different manner, with several very different paths to completion.

Can we expect the same wasteland experience as in Fallout 3? I’m kinda scared about playing in a city untouched by atomic bombs! (thanks @The_iCroco)

Yes and no. There are some areas that were hit directly, but for the most part, the destruction you’ll see in the Mojave Wasteland is due to neglect, not bombardment. Don’t expect sprawling, fully functioning cities, though. The New Vegas strip is self-contained and tightly managed directly by Mr. House, so everything in the city works perfectly. As you get farther away from the strip, you’ll see more and more ruins and abandoned buildings.

Would love to know how they will create that WOW factor that Fallout 3 had: the wasteland, the bomb at Megaton and so on. Tricky!? (thanks @bekblayton)

We think there are some similarly cool WOW moments in our game, and you should find one in each act of the main storyline.

How difficult will it be to take care of physical needs like hydration, sleep, and so on? Is it going to be overbearing?

Those features are only in Hardcore Mode, so they’re optional. If you find they’re getting to be too much of a hassle, you can always turn it off (although you won’t get the Hardcore trophy if you do).

What can you tell us about the new Hardcore Mode?

Hardcore Mode can be turned on or off at any time, although if you want the Hardcore trophy, you have to turn it on when initially prompted and leave it that way all the way to the end of the game. When it’s on, players will have to eat, sleep, and drink water every day. In addition, ammo has weight, companions can die, Stimpaks heal over time, and damaged limbs can only be healed with a Doctor’s Bag.

While you can fast travel in Hardcore Mode, you can’t if the time it would take to get you there would result in the player dying from dehydration/exhaustion/starvation.

Will the shooting feel better than it did in Fallout 3? (thanks @DYLANmmc)

Obsidian has tweaked the real-time combat quite a bit from Fallout 3 to make it feel more natural for people who don’t want to use VATS all the time.

What’s the story with the Aim Down the Sight mechanic? And is Fallout: New Vegas still support first-person and third-person viewing modes?

First- and third-person modes are in, and we’ve tweaked the third-person camera to be a bit more useful. In first-person mode, iron sights can be used with most weapons. The only exceptions are ones like the Grenade Machine Gun that are enormous and fire from the hip, and guns that have an actual sight on them (like sniper rifles and weapons modded with a physical sight). You just hold down the button and the camera zooms to show the weapon’s iron sight instead of a crosshair. It’s very useful for combat outside of VATS mode.

How big is Fallout: New Vegas compared to Fallout 3? (thanks @maialideth)

It’s about the same size. If you thought Fallout 3 was big, you’ll find Fallout: New Vegas to be equally big.

How much install data will be needed for Fallout: New Vegas?

Fallout: New Vegas is a 5 GB install on PS3 that runs when you first launch the game.

One of my favorite things to do in Fallout 3 was scavenging homes and office buildings. Will we see many rural and urban areas for that? (thanks @JaylLaf)

Just like Fallout 3, our wasteland is littered with abandoned (and not-so-abandoned) locations for you to explore.

Fallout: New Vegas PS3

Will there be any Vaults to explore in New Vegas? (thanks @LewJ1196)

Yes there are! We have five different Vaults in the game. They serve as unique dungeons, and depending on what path you follow through the main storyline, you may have to venture into one of them to retrieve something.

I’m interested to know more about the music score that will be piped through our Pip Boys for New Vegas. Will there be more variety? (thanks @Peligrie)

We have three separate radio stations in Fallout: New Vegas. There’s New Vegas Radio, which has the kind of songs you’ve come to expect from a Fallout game – hosted by Mr. New Vegas (voiced by Wayne Newton). Then there’s Black Mountain Radio, which is more classic country-focused. And finally there’s Mojave Music Radio, which is similar to NVR, only without the news stories from Mr. New Vegas.

Of course that’s just the radio. If you never turn on the radio at all, you’ll be treated to a new score by Inon Zur, featuring a string quartet, samples from past Fallout games, and some very cool location-specific themes.

Will New Vegas have a Good/Evil/Neutral decision path like Fallout 3? (thanks @Reumaut)

Karma still exists, and affects some things, but for the most part our decisions are determined more by the new reputation system, which tracks how the various factions in the game feel about you.

Will the Brotherhood of Steel be present in Fallout: New Vegas? I know in Fallout 3, the “original” BoS was based near California. (thanks @SCZ_PS3)

The Brotherhood of Steel is in Fallout: New Vegas, but not nearly as much as they were in Fallout 3. The west coast BoS was really hit hard following the events of Fallout 1 & 2, so they’re not nearly as important as the NCR is in the region.

Will there be any Fallout 2 characters make an appearance in Fallout: New Vegas? (thanks @Vi9)

Yes! We’ve already confirmed Marcus from Fallout 2 is coming back, and will again be voiced by Michael Dorn. As for anyone else, you’ll just have to wait for the game to see for yourself.

Can I still force materials inside the pants of enemies? If so, what explosive additions have you made? (thanks @Foxification)

Yep, you can still pickpocket grenades into people’s pockets. Even better is that now you can pickpocket plastic explosives into people’s pants! For some fun, drop some C4 into a few random people, equip the detonator, stand back and pull the trigger. It never gets old.

Will there any kind of transportation?

Aside from fast-travel, we do have a monorail that will take you directly to the strip from Camp McCarran (assuming you’re friendly with the NCR).

Fallout: New Vegas PS3

Can we continue playing after the main quest line ends?

No. Instead, Fallout: New Vegas has a real ending, that shows the results of your actions throughout the game and how they affected the different factions, locations and people you encountered.

Are you still able to make a female character?

Absolutely!

Do you plan on including many DLC add-ons for Fallout: New Vegas, as Fallout 3 did? (thanks @VGNtertainment)

We’re not really going into specifics on DLC, but we have a plan, and we think it’s a good one. You should hear more about it soon.

What’s the initial level cap.. and will DLC be exclusive to one console or another for any amount of time? (thanks @keeponrunning)

The level cap for Fallout: New Vegas is 30. As mentioned previously, we’re not discussing the details of downloadable content right now. Stay tuned!

Will there be a demo to try Fallout: New Vegas? (thanks @RichLando)

There’s no demo planned for the game.. We wanted the focus to be completing the full game and making it the best game it could be.

Thanks again for all the great questions. We hope you enjoy your stay in the Mojave Wasteland!

  • Thanks for the info. Can’t wait! BTW, 5gb for install, really? Hope the load times are fast!

  • Answered a lot of questions that i wanted to ask myself, thankyou!

  • Hardcore mode? Sounds interesting…

  • a quick question does it have custom soundtracks ? please say yes xD

  • also can hardcore mode be played on easy?

  • They dealt with the unavoidable “bugs” issue that was prevalent in PS3 version of Fallout 3. I am lucky enough to own both consoles but I opted for the PS3 version in my pre-order after reading them saying that it will be a stable game on every machine.

I am taking a risk with DLCs though. I haven’t heard anything about any of the consoles makers signing an exclusivity agreement that guarantees them availability months ahead of the competition so hopefully we’re on a level playing field here.

This is the game that I am looking forward to most this year so I am eager to make my next visit to the Fallout universe on the 19th!

  • That 5 gig install sounds rough, but if this is as good as F3, I won’t mind. I’m kinda torn about the ending though… That we can’t continue to play after the main story is over. BUT, like I said, if it all amounts to as excellent a game as F3, with fewer bugs, I’m a happy camper. Thanks for the interview guys.

  • CANNOT WAIT!!!!
    NEED TO PLAY NOW!!!

  • Uh oh. He stepped around the “DLC exclusive for one system” question…

  • Sounds awesome, even though I’ve never played Fallout 3.

Will I be missing out on some of the story considering this fact?

    Also are there custom soundtracks?

  • Fallout 3 was a disaster. Probably one of the worst ports in PS3 history. It was buggy, graphically below all standards, it corrupted your save files and the game froze way too often. Hopefully this isn’t the same thing but I’m incredibly skeptical about New Vegas and how preforms on PS3. If this is another lackluster port I will not fork over my 60 dollars.

  • Very nice Q&A. I’m still unsure whether I’ll pick this up at launch or wait for a GOTY release with all DLCs though…

  • I’m just worried about the PS3 version. The PS3 version of 3 was so inferior, I felt ashamed to buy their product. Especially with the DLC – I couldn’t sit down with the game (1-3 hours) without having at least 1 freeze.

Can you assure us this is no the case this time around?

  • @Stealthur
Well that’s the one question there ignoring so that can’t be good news.

  • Will this game run like C R A P on the PS3 like Fallout 3 did?

Will this game freeze every 5 minutes like Fallout 3 did?

How long do PS3 owners have to wait for the DLC after it is release on the other console/PC?

Why does this game look Meh?

  • REALLY? Another Fallout game where you can’t continue playing after the ending? Did they not learn anything from people’s complaints about the last game?

  • Yeah, for the love of the holy goat, I hope this game sports better QA than Fallout 3 did.

Even the Game of the Year edition with a year’s worth of patches ran like a pre-alpha it was so full of glitches and crashes. It was shameful for everyone involved that such a game got release approval, let alone twice.

  • Well just like FO3, initially the completion of the main story will end the game, but they will probably come out with DLC to where you can continue the game for other quests past the 30 cap level, just like they did with the “Broken Steel” DLC.

  • I agree with both 12 and 10. while 3 (and even oblivion) was a great game, the ps3 ports of the 2 were just awful. it should be a major thing to change in this game b/c thats just not fair to give to ps3 owners an inferior version of the game. i’ll be watching the reviews first to see what they say about the ps3 version before i give out any money for a game that will freeze way to much to play.

can you guys please work on that, it really is a backhand to all ps3 owners…

  • o boy i can wait to get FO:NV and then wait almost a year to get the dlc. cause i believe ms proably already have another deal with bethesda. and of course if our version doesnt sell well they’ll blame us even if our versions sucks.

  • Already reserved and paid for my copy of NV, however I am really concerned about how glitchy it may be. FO3 was fantastic as a game, but the number of bugs, glitches, and crashes was ridiculous.

  • I simply cannot wait until Tuesday. Is there any kind of inventory bonus for a Fallout 3 save file?

  • The DLC for this game had BETTER be released on PS3 at the same time as the other console.

  • Thanks for the questions everyone! Hardcore mode sounds like a lot of fun. Can’t wait picking up my collectors edition day one!

  • Regarding question 1 – “I’m afraid it’s going to feel like DLC. Are there enough changes to make New Vegas feel unique from Fallout 3?”

Even if New Vegas were a glorified DLC pack, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Loved, loved, LOVED Fallout 3, and all the DLC with it.

That said, Tuesday cannot come soon enough!

  • Looking at switching my reserve copy to Xbox just cause of the bugs and DLC from last year. Just a safe bet.

  • I can not wait to get my copy and i just hope that we people that ordered/get it on PS3 don’t get brushed off by Xbox getting anything we can’t like some games now a days.

  • Cannot wait for this! I’ll be picking it up at midnight.

@21 – I’ve already seen this answered and the answer is no. I also thought it would be a very nice gesture for all those hours invested in FO3 to get SOMETHING in New Vegas.

More a request then a question. Please make the DLC well worth the price just as it was (for the most part) with Fallout 3. Raising level cap, adding new weapons, clothing, perks and so on with a new and interesting location/story.

  • I really hope this game doesn’t lag and freeze up like Fallout 3 did. I loved Fallout 3, but that was really annoying.

  • Really you can’t play after you beat the game.. kind of a bummer. That is one of the few reasons why i disliked Fallout 3

  • Can’t wait to play this, loved Fallout 3 and have been wanting to play this since I first heard about it. Day one.

  • “No. Instead, Fallout: New Vegas has a real ending, that shows the results of your actions throughout the game and how they affected the different factions, locations and people you encountered.”

    – Surely letting us continue the game AFTER showing the results of our actions would be much better? we could carry on playing in the world we had inevitably created.

  • Why are so many complaining about the game having a ending?! You know it has a ending, it gives you a major warning before the ending that you are nearing the end and I believe that after the ending/credits that it allows you to go back to the last save before the last part of the story was completed.

At the very least you can beat the game once to know the story and then go back to the last save before it ends and continue playing or just start a new character with no desire/need to complete the story.

  • I loved FO3, logged more than 180+ hours into it. The PS3 version had a number of bugs, didn’t look as good as the other versions.. but it was a good game that out shined it’s flaws. I admittedly was on the fence about FO: NV, probably wasn’t going to get it.. but with all this GT5 delay talk, why the hell not? Looking forward to next Tues/Wed.

  • More question dodging again. Bloody cow’s questions are the ones that demand answers. Looks like another sub HD, unstable and below 30 FPS multiplatform game on the PS3!

  • Can’t continue after finishing the story? Didn’t you guys learn from the last time aground? Figured Bethesda would’ve passed on the word.

  • My question wasn’t answered – Will Fallout New Vegas contain as many bugs/glitches/system lockups as Fallout 3 for PS3 did and if so, is Bethesda or Obsidian going to do anything about it this time?

  • When the game releases will you also release a full track listing of all songs that will be playing on the radio ? I love the Fallout 3 soundtrack and will be adding this one to my collection as well.

    Cmon SUNDAY

  • CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS!

Hope FutureShop ships my collector’s edition ASAP.

  • I am sorry, but the real question still remains unanswered. What has been done to keep the PS3 bugs to a minimum? And do you plan on releasing timely patches if unknown bugs do in fact arise? I understand a huge game like this will have glitches and such, but Fallout 3 almost got unbearable at points on the PS3. Spend a couple hours leveling up or doing a major story arc … on your way back to save only to have your game freeze up. My game must have froze at least 50 times. Game ending, system needing to be unplugged from the wall to restart it kind of freezes.

Again, have you insured that this release will be more stable and are you dedicated to patching the game as needed?

You do not know how much a slap in the face it is to be asked to buy multiple types of DLC when you have not even fixed your original game.

  • If they can not answer the question about the glitches and bugs , why should i waste my money on this game? I think that is an important question for them to answer . Stop being COWARDS and answer the question . Will fallout nv be an inferior port and will it be glitchy and buggy ? I don’t think it’s right to screw consumers like that. I really want to purchase this game day 1 but if you can’t answer these questions , i won’t be buying this game . If you guys feel this isn’t important than i think it’s time for you guys to fallout the gaming industry .

  • they dont answer every question and comment posted. If your so concerned about the bugs and issues then do some research before spending your money on the game. This is something they have already talked about and are confident will not be an issue in New Vegas

  • I’m disappointed about not being able to continue the game after the ending, but it’s just a marketing scheme so you download the DLC that will let you continue past that point.

  • A 5GB install, that’s kind of steep.

  • I’m totally with deathxrebirth (38)

Fallout 3 had its fair share of bugs but the DLC on the PS3 was totally unplayable. Crashing the system multiple times within the hour is unacceptable. I truly hope that first and foremost these types of bugs have been worked out of New Vegas. It’s hard to justify buying a new game from a company that can’t even bother to fix their previously broken game. Not to mention that even when it became a GotY edition, there was obviously no effort at all to correct the problems. All the errors and glitches are completely intact on the disc. Goes to show that they really could give a rats a$$ about the people who are putting food on their table.

Even so, I’ll be getting New Vegas… someday.

  • I have a question regarding the difficulty level and the Hardcore Trophy. My wife and I both love Fallout but she prefers an easier setting. She does play on my account and upon loading our saves the most recent difficulty is loaded as well. My question is as follows: Will New Vegas have a similar system and if so will this prevent me from getting the Hardcore trophy since we will have to switch our difficulty each time we load our particular saves?

    Thanks!

  • Matt, thanks for the reply, but as a multi-platform owner, the questions above are poignant and intriguing. Is the PS3 version a cheap port of the Xbox build. You may not like the term cheap, but for PS3 owners paying $60, we expect the same quality as an XBOX owner paying the same amount. Has more work been put in to the PS3 build to make sure this version of Fallout exceeds the standards of Fallout 3? Same question applies to the DLC you are either working on or have already canned.

  • Why is it there is always someone on this blog defending sony/game company. let the ones being questioned answer . you just make yourself look like a idiot . whats the point of this blog besides advertisement and answering consumer questions ? this blog is suppose to be so sony/game companies can connect with their fanbase. i would like an answer from the developers not a ps member that has no real facts unless you have been playing the game 1st hand.

  • Have this been well ported on the Ps3?

  • There is only one important question and I see that it was not answered.

Will this game be a mess of constant freezing like Fallout 3 was? If it is, I don’t care how good the rest of the game is, I’m not putting up with that again. It’s inexcusable.
