Introducing PlayStation Rewards – A New Way to Earn Exclusive Status and Recognition

Susan Panico's Avatar Posted by on Oct 27, 2010 // Sr. Director, PlayStation Network

Today, we’re excited to share news of the launch of PlayStation Rewards, a new program that recognizes and rewards our users for simply doing what they love – playing games and interacting with the entertainment content that PlayStation has to offer. We really wanted to create something that says, “thank you” for being a loyal PlayStation fan.

PlayStation Rewards - Stacked

In its initial launch tomorrow (Oct. 28th), PlayStation Rewards will be an invitation-only beta to all eligible PlayStation Plus and Gamer Advisory Panel (GAP) members. We’re kicking things off as a beta so that we can get feedback from our most loyal fans in order to make it the best possible rewards program it can be. It’s also worth noting that during the beta phase, the program will be focused on PlayStation 3 owners, but we hope to include PSP users as well not too far down the road. Oh, and one more thing: PlayStation Rewards will be free – there is no fee to join!

Now, to give you a bit more details on the new loyalty program… PlayStation Rewards is designed to give you the opportunity to gain exclusive status, recognition, and rewards as a thank you for your continued interest in PlayStation. And, the best part is that you don’t have to do anything different. Keep playing new games, buying content purchased from PlayStation Network in the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home, download movies and TV shows, or just communicate with us by taking one of our surveys, for example, and you’ll now be recognized for it.

The more you play and participate, the more progress you’ll make through our three reward tiers — “Select,” “Pro,” and “Legendary.” As your status increases, so do the rewards. And if you want to check out your current status level, simply go to your private profile page and look at the reward progress meter.

So what do you get? Right now, rewards include things like…

  • Exclusive PSN avatars that display member status in the program
  • Exclusive dynamic themes and PlayStation Home content
  • Opportunities throughout the program year to participate in members-only sweepstakes and giveaways for experiences and merchandise you won’t find elsewhere (The first of which is an all expenses paid trip to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, as PlayStation’s guest)

PlayStation Rewards Homepage

That’s just the start and our plan is to continually grow and improve the reward offering as the program itself evolves. Your feedback in this beta period will help make the program even better!!

If you’re a GAP member or PlayStation Plus subscriber in the U.S., who is opted-in to marketing as of October 24th, be sure to look for your invitation and sign-up for PlayStation Rewards.

To learn more about our new loyalty program, check back tomorrow when the site will be live and the beta forum will be available for all eligible participants.

We look forward to showing you our appreciation along the way!

Great Idea! Thanks Sony. Any Idea what time the emails will be going out today?

so , basically if you spent a ton of money on psn before playstation+ and didn’t subscribe because you already bought most of what’s offered with + at full price you are S.O.L. ? no rewards for a loyal customer since ps3 launch but someone who ignores psn until last summer and only spends $50 to get psn + suddenly gets the star treatment ? not fair at all
you should be looking at those psn users who actually have been supporters for a while by buying games and spending time on the blog .

proud owner of over 90 psn titles , lots of dlc etc. – but again disappointed in Sony for ignoring that .

Will our trophies be used as a point system or anything? would be cool to gain exclusive stuff for being a high level player

+ J-Wat on October 27th, 2010 at 10:53 am said:

Accepting rewards doesn’t cost points towards the next tier does it? For example: if I am 20 points away from going “pro”, and I download a dynamic theme as a reward for “select”. Will I now be 50 points away from “pro”? I hope not. I would hate having to decide between accepting a reward that I kind of like and holding out for a reward that I REALLY like.

I can wait for this! i have and do whatever it takes to be in the “Legendary” category. I have over 110 PS3 disc based games, over 100 psn games, 50 blu-rays, 2 psps ( 1 psp go the other psp og! haha) I have the orginal 60 gig ps3 and will be getting the ps3 slim for the holidays. I got my 200″ sony projector and a 40″ sony bravia! And i have my 7.1 sony surround sound speakers! All i need is 3D and i am set for Legendary!

if by loyal you mean people who spend a lot of money and time on their PS3, then i guess i’m not loyal enough… tho having had to buy a 2nd PS3 due to the first one dying on me is pretty loyal… and so is jumping on the Move bandwagon as well, thats pretty loyal… but since i can’t afford to spend tons of money on content and new games, then my loyalty has its limits..
and only a GAP member, not paying for PS+ anytime soon…

don’t get me wrong, i love my gaming with the PS systems i’ve owned since day one, but real life dictates where my money goes and at this time and the foreseeable future, its to make ends meet… i will simply play the games I have at my disposal…

ps- wheres our current gen iteration of Destruction Derby or Test Drive:Eve of Destruction.????? Anyone with me on this???

I’m a Canadian PS Plus member, I feel very shafted that we don’t get to participate in the beta program.. what the heck does an imaginary line separating two countries have to do with gaming and being a loyal PlayStation fan and PS plus member, FAIL on Sony’s part big time

I realy hope this stuff comes also for Europe, kinda sad seeing the good stuff only for the USgamer ;(

+ jac_richardson on October 27th, 2010 at 11:13 am said:

I’m not either of those, which sucks because I’m on here all the time. But, I guess it doesn’t matter because I have no money to Get high on the list anyway. I’m already to hour 160 in patapon 2. Can we get higher for better trophies? By the way, when will you give the PSP trophy support? How hard is it to make a program that reads saves and gives you trophies accordingly? I’ve been burning through my PSP for 2 years, and have nothing to show for it. Also, what exactly can you do in GAP anyway? I signed up for playstation underground, but I didn’t get anything there. Mostly I just read the blog, vote on ideas, and post ideas that NEVER get approved.

+ Huuuze on October 27th, 2010 at 11:15 am said:

I’m loving the idea of this program, but it’ll be up to Sony to make sure it’s execution is fantastic.

One minor gripe. While going to CES would be great, why didn’t you choose E3 as the prize? A video gamers conference versus an electronics conference — seems like a natural choice to me.

+ perrandy on October 27th, 2010 at 11:27 am said:

this is just awesome! thank you sony and the playstation team for bringing this program up for us your loyal fans/customers.btw,i’m a gap member too :0

+ TheMadSpin on October 27th, 2010 at 11:29 am said:

I subscribed to Playstation Plus right away, I’ve owned my PS3 for over three years, have a PSP, Playstation Move and a second PS3 in my bedroom.

If that, plus my mountain of DLC and digital game purchases don’t get me there(the rewards beta being “there”), I’m not sure what will. Looking forward to getting rewarded for all the dumb amounts of money I spend on gaming.

You keep telling us to act before Oct 24th. Did you realize that it’s October 27th? Does that mean they’re all too late?

Yes, if you are not a GAP member or did not subscribe to PlayStation Plus by October 24, then you’ll have to wait until the program is out of beta.

Sony I hope you send me an invite I’ve been a GAP member for 6 years and I never got invited to anything, & I’ve been loyal PS3 fanboy.

+ colstripcapn on October 27th, 2010 at 11:37 am said:

heh, I guess owning every playstation system created, and the numerous games that go with it, isn’t enough to be considered ‘loyal’ since I don’t sign up for a premium service that to date has not offered a single thing to one of the Playstation series core genre’s: The RPG, specifically turn-based RPGs.

Im a PS+ member, I am really looking forward to this. It sounds like a great idea. I have no Idea what a GAP membership is , but I will be searching it to become a member as well.

@fernandolins PS+ gets into the beta but it will be for everyone after!

+ biggie2316 on October 27th, 2010 at 11:58 am said:

I am not trying to be hard on Sony but they need to make sure those of us who jumped in on day to be a ps+ member they need to go back and gives us credit for buying the plus membership but every thing else we have purchased since then, i also hope they don’t botch this like they did the killzone three beta where it was only available to the first 5000 plus members to download the theme when we where told that being a plus member you could get exclusive betas and now they have split plus members up. Sony we have stood by your side for years as gamers now do the right thing and make this program work.

+ biggie2316 on October 27th, 2010 at 12:03 pm said:

Also just realized this might be a cheap way for Sony to get us to buy more is it really a rewards program or is only going to reward people who have money to buy their way to legendary.or are you going to rewards us for trophies and the time we put into our beloved PlayStation. Again not wanting to be hard on you but I have too.

+ ANUBUSNYC on October 27th, 2010 at 12:12 pm said:

Chris, can you please clarify the “opt-in” marketing portion of the requirement? I am a PSN Plus subscriber and I receive emails from Sony which specifically advertise the PlayStation Network (no other emails other than those). However, when I checked my PSN account’s marketing settings, I did not have the opt-in marketing checkbox checked.

If I’m receiving those emails would that indicate I’m eligible?

Check my responses to comments 62 and 154. If you subscribed to PlayStation Plus before October 24 and are recieveing emails from PlayStation then you should be in good shape to get your invite to this beta.

Initial Reaction: Awesome. I love being rewarded for supporting companies.

Final Reaction: US only. Of course it is.

Nintendo Club is in Canada and that’s far better than this thing sounds. Take a note from Nintendo.

Just wondering but is this ever going to come to europe? Its sounds like an awesome idea but i live in europe and want to do it aswell :P

Also does ur past transactions on PSN etc get counted?

OK for people who think that this is only for PS Plus and gap members. The beta is being put out to the Plus and GAP members so that it can be tested and tweaked. Everyone will be getting the PlayStation Rewards program as soon as the beta is over. Calm down and read the article again they say that as plain as day.

+ DeadlyGamer on October 27th, 2010 at 12:42 pm said:

AWESOME!,.. ive been a G.A.P. member for a couple years now and ps+ since launch

i love being rewarded for my actions!

+ Zarxce on October 27th, 2010 at 12:57 pm said:

Will this go backwards and track what you’ve already did? I mean, I’ve already bought and played around 40 PS3 games, which I probably won’t get around to playing again….and the 1000+ trophies I’ve already earned…will I start off with a bit of a “head start”? Or everyone starts with a clean slate when the program officially launches? There’s only so many PS3 games to go around…

Or perhaps only newer games will support the program?

More details would be great. Though I’m guessing I’ll just have to wait for future posts…

Then again…not like this matters, as I live in Canada…..but still…..

As a loyal diehard Sony fanboy I doubt I get invited to this, just like the Killzone 3 beta, I downloaded the theme and rated it and I was 30ish in rating it, called sony and got the run around, was told it was chosen randomly among 5k people then called back and got told another story. I’m Losing faith in you Sony after supporting you for 15+ years since I was a kid, even buying other sony products such as my big screen Sony Bravia, feels like the more I support you the more you slap me in the face.

Sorry to hear about that. The first 5,000 PlayStation Plus members that downloaded the theme were sent an email on Monday, October 25th with a voucher code for the beta. The email was sent to the email address associated with the PSN account.

Hey, I cant argue to with things.

Good job Sony, been a GAP member since 2001-2002. Even beta tested hardware (PS2 Network adapter, etc) from you guys.

Free is always good, especially for being rewarded for just loving to play games.

If we have already invested money into Playstation Store and games, will these be automatically added into our rewards or do we gotta start over?

Awesome, this is pretty much what i had dreamed of when i heard of xbox’s achievements (before that i hoped that playstation would get something similiar).
Anyway, a nice way to reward players is with material rewards, like controller-skins, posters, keyring and stuff like that.
Thank you for this. Only thing i’m now hoping for is a small magazine that’d come to the ps3/psp-owners.

I see we still have Europeans stalking this .blog, despite the opening of a EU blog. I thought we were done with all that. Whine and whine and whine that nothing pertains to you, then when you get your own, whining simply becomes a side thing. Where’s the line? Sociopolitical boundaries aren’t something that can just be ignored on the grounds of the “PlayStation Nation.” Go play with your TV Apps.
