Hello! I’m Josh Olin (aka JD_2020), and thank you for the opportunity to highlight some of the features that Call of Duty: Black Ops will deliver to PS3 fans when it launches on November 9th. A number of these features are ones that I think the community has been wanting for a long time, which is why we’ve worked really hard to deliver. So let’s get started!
Multiplayer Online Split-Screen Support
Let’s get started with what I believe is the most unknown, yet confirmed, aspect to Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer – the online split-screen support we’ve re-introduced to the franchise!
The Facts:
- You can connect a second controller and bring a guest online (i.e. “JD_2020” & “JD_2020(1)”).
- Guests can rank up, earn unlocks, etc – all guest progress goes away once signed out.
Custom Games Editor
Allow me to introduce the Black Ops Custom Games Editor! Private matches have never been this customizable. Players will have the ability to structure their games at all new levels of granularity. From variables as simple as Time Limit and Score Limit, or as deep as which weapons, Perks, and gear are available. You want a Pistols Only match? Make one! No longer do custom game modes rely on the “honor system.”
Furthermore, any Custom Game you create and configure can be placed in your File Share, for friends and the community to browse, download, and enjoy. You just might create the most addictive new game mode of all time from the comfort of your own living room!
In-Game Friends List
We’ve integrated a built-in Friends List into the in game user interface. You’ll be able to browse Recent Players, Friends, navigate their File Shares, Recent Games, Combat Records – all within this in-game menu system designed to streamline the social process within the game. Sending game invites and joining Friends’ games has never been simpler than in Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Regional Matchmaking & Party Privacy
Call of Duty: Black Ops will support regional matchmaking filters on a global scale. So, no matter where you’re at in the world, you will have the ability to specify whether you want to match with players from other geographical regions, or only those local to you. This will make communication and lag a much less intrusive variable on your gameplay experience.
Additionally, given Black Ops will support joining games in progress via an even simpler built-in in-game Friends List interface, we’ll allow a Party leader to lock down his lobby to Invite Only, Friends Only, or even Close it altogether if he wants to be in complete control over who enters and exits the Party Lobby.
Emblems Do NOT Reset with Prestige
This one is pretty cut-and-dried. A frequently asked question is, “Will my kickass emblem I spent hours perfecting be lost when I prestige?” The answer is “NO!” Emblems are one of the only aspects of Black Ops MP that do not get a full reset upon entering Prestige. Things that will reset when you Prestige are: XP, COD Points, Challenge progressions, Loadouts, and so forth.
So that’s just a few of the lesser-known components to Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer, confirmed for the first time here on the official PlayStation.Blog! Why do we (PS3 users) get screwed? Xbox can use a separate account but we can’t?! B$…. First, maps, now this… what next, Zombies split screen for Xbox only?
This is great news and I cant wait to play this game. Does the PS3 get dedicated servers that i read was added to the online?
This is really looking like the best COD yet.
And can’t wait for the Zombie mode, it’s one of the modes I know I’ll enjoy the most.

Wow, I don’t ever give crap to anyone who posts on here but… that was kinda sneaky.
I love how when this Blog post was posted it said PS3 includes the Split-Screen ability to sign in with 2 PSN accounts and level up both and then he pulls the plug and edits it and basically says “Screw You” to us Sony fans. MICROSOFT PAID YOU TO GET THE MAP PACKS EARLY, NOT TO SCREW SONY FANS OVER. Hopefully JD_2020 understands the frustration and considers puting it into the PS3 copy of Black Ops because to be honest it’s pretty jacked up for one console to have it over another, and the whole Map Pack thing is a joke.

Resistance 2 done it, Borderlands patched it in,I wouldn’t worry too much, i reckon we will get it :) But, (360 only) and you post it on the PS blog, wow kick us while we are down :/
So they remove tactical insertion and replace it with split screen multiplayer, boosters will have a field day – well done Treyarch.

You’ll be on the same team as your split screen party. It’s like a party, you won’t be able to join FFAs.

David’s twitter has been updated to say it’s a PSN issue and he is looking into it with the engineering department, and that it may take some time.
Maybe it will be patched in after release. Maybe they need to talk more with Sony about how it can be done.
Multiplayer split screen… so you can cheat with out having to buy a second TV and PS3… even the poor can cheat now… wahooo

I just hope all of this is going to be available to PS3 owners and not just 360 owners…
ps. They’re taking orders for the Hardened edition from Toysrus.com if any of you missed out. Seems to be “sold out” elsewhere that i’ve checked.

Now if they can only at least try to eliminate the cheaters, the game would be perfect. Black Ops Beta has been hacked for cheating and the game isn’t even out yet!

Microsoft is desperate! paying companies to get DLC first for them wow, and now this? getting online with two accounts at the same time to play splitscreen xbox only? that shows the desperation of Microsoft! anyways cod is not that good… Oh and a message to Activision: you suck!

why can the 360 have two people both with live accounts playing on the same system? and we only can have a guest? I remember that split screen like the 360 is getting was possible on Resistance 2

Hey Treyarch, what the is the reason that 2 people can’t sign into their accounts at the same time in split-screen online? Is it because you’re too lazy or is it the crummy playstation 3 infrastructure?

Yeah, why would you post that we can have 2 PSN accounts signed in and then edit it out? Wow. And Xbox does get this feature. I agree @209, if these are Xbox-only features, why would you post on the PS Blog? You get our hopes up, and then crush them…
Hrm… You’d figure PS3 fans would learn by now. It’s not Treyarch kissing MS ass. It’s Activision kissing MS ass. Why? Cause it’s all about the benjamins in Activision Land.
Think. Who signed timed exclusive deals with MS for not only this title but future titles and even MW2? That’s right, Activision did. Why? Cause money talks to Activision way louder than fans.
The bottom line though: Why should PS3 fans really care? All Activision has been doing for the past decade is delivering rehashed titles with little to no changes in gameplay and straight out screwing companies that’s not throwing money at them. Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, Tony Hawk, the list goes on and on and on… So seriously, why bother purchasing Activision titles when you know you’re getting screwed over or just getting a rehashed title that in reality, could and should just be DLC for past titles?

That is complete bull! Why do we get the worst version?!? 360 gets to save their content in the guest account but we don’t? Why is the PS3 the worse version, because they didn’t want to pay Activision’s content ransom?!?

@212 He’s most likely saying that because of all the hate they’ve been receiving from the PS3 community because of that. More likely than not Micro$oft did pay them to patch it in later they’re just disguising it as a PSN issue… SMH at Treyarch
Why not at least give the ability to share your unlocked weapons/classes with the guest? You can’t just leave PS3 players with a game that has a flaw as big as that one.
Does anyone know if the campaign is co-op as well?
Firstly i think you should remove this feature from BOTH games, ps3 and xbox 360. Xbox 360 have an advantage as they have 2 Live accounts at once, we have a psn and a guest. I think this will spoil the online play as being killed by a guest will affect my stats and they are not even a permanent player. It’s also the same priced game for both versions so it should be equal in every way. You said you are listening to your fans? well obviously not, you and Sony should sort something out for this feature to be exactly the same as the xbox. Xbox ALWAYS has priority. If this hasn’t been rectified by the release or at least in an update then you have failed the ps3 gamers with Black Ops. Thanks a bunch.
Wow 2 comments just isn’t enough for me. Sony, Treyarch and Activision, you have all got your ps3 gamers livid and that is not way to treat the people who actually pay for you game. I am extremely fed up of it. I constantly stress to xbox gamers that ps3 is the better console,now I’m starting to think I am just lying to myself. IMPROVE NOW!

Hey with the split screen online, does anyone know if you can have 2 people signed on with their own play station ID, instead of just the second player being signed as a guest.
second player has to be the guest..I have a feeling money and microsoft are the reasons 4 this
