Kung-Fu LIVE Arrives with Training Tips and Bandana Giveaway!

50 14

Hello everyone! Teemu Maki-Patola here from Virtual Air Guitar Company back with our very first update since Kung-Fu LIVE’s launch in both North America and Europe this week. For those of you who’ve already downloaded it, we thank you so much and we’re hoping you’re having a blast! If you think you’re having a little trouble surviving though, well then you’re in luck. Today we wanted to come back with a few things that could help you fight your way through to the finish on your epic journey into the world of kung-fu comic books.

Before we dive into a quick tutorial video, I first wanted to thank everyone again for all of their support over the last year, as it’s truly helped us get this game finished and off to your living rooms. That said, we know that our game can be extremely challenging, physically, and we wanted to let our very own in-house Sensei Oskari demonstrate how to do one of the key moves in the game. A lot of you have seen him in our videos and trailers, and he’s back to give you some quick tips on how to pull off the basic “Power Punch.”

As you can see, Oskari likes to get really into the game. Don’t feel intimidated by his moves though, since, to be fair, he’s had well over a year’s worth of practice both testing the game, and engineering all of the game’s sounds. That said, he’s definitely right about the power punch. Not only is it a brutal fierce blow to any enemy on screen, it also doubles as a fast and efficient way to move around any level. You can also, of course, simply run quickly to the left or right – and the game will exaggerate all of those moves on-screen giving you time to then re-center yourself in front of the camera. We find that a mix between both running left and right, jumping, and a clever use of power punches can be the most effective and fastest ways to traverse any level. (Pro tip: This move will be essential when fighting the giants, so make sure to master it before level 7!)

Other tips we have for you are of course to remember to stretch, drink plenty of water, break when you feel as if you need one (or about every 20 minutes or so) and of course – make sure that you have plenty of space and bright lights on in your playing area. About 7×9 feet of playing space should be just right, and you should also have enough light in your room for the PlayStation Eye to see you fighting the good fight in front of your TV.

What else can we offer you in an effort to help maximize your playing experience with Kung-Fu LIVE AND kick some serious ass at the same time? How about a kick-ass Kung-Fu LIVE bandana, just like the one Oskari is wearing! We’re giving away 100 of these hard-to-find collector’s items, you can be sporting one soon to look just as cool as him…

Kung-Fu Live bandanna Kung-Fu Live bandanna Kung-Fu Live bandanna

If you’d like a chance to score a seriously kick-ass Kung-Fu LIVE bandana, all you need to do is email us at giveaway@virtualairguitar.com with one of two things. If you have the game, email us a picture of yourself along your adventure using the image export feature. Any image will do, we’d love to see you in action! If you don’t have the game yet or can’t do that, simply tell us what your favorite fighting move is of all time. It can be from a game, a movie, or even from the real world of martial arts – just let us know what you think is the most badass move of all time. We’ll be randomly selecting 100 entrants to win a bandana mailed straight from us in Finland, so if you enter, check your email for the next steps if you’ve been selected!

Other than that, we simply wish you all have a good time with our game. Whether you’re playing alone or playing with friends, playing for high-score or playing to burn some serious calories – we ask that you always remember to keep the action enjoyably ridiculous and not take things too seriously – it’s been our motto since the beginning! Thanks again to the PlayStation team and please remember to also stay tuned to our Facebook page which we’ll be updated all throughout the holiday season, and be sure to check our website as well for even more pro tips from Sensei Oskari himself, guiding your mind and your fists to victory!

  • First! i bought this game last nite..like at 12 midnite cuz i was dealing with some internet difficulties..(forgot to reset the router :p) so as soon as i get home ima get ready to have a nice kung fu work out!

  • i want this soo bad but i cant do it from my wheelchair but if a friend gets it ill try it to see how far i reach sitting wippin some ass :)

  • I am unusually excited for this game but I need a demo or at least some good reviews first! How do I know this ain’t some shovelware that gets a 30 on metacritic! Not one person has reviewed it yet :(

  • i just rememnered i got the collectors edition of streetfighter 4 and it comes with Ryu’s headband..this will hopefully keep the sweat off my face..and make me look good while im fighting the air :p

  • LOL, that was so much fun i cant wait for it.

Q: Does it will available with Multiplayer mode ?

    • Teemu Mäki-Patola

Yeah, there is a multiplayer mode where up to 4 people can control the game characters and fight against the one on the camera.

  • I really need to to win the giveaway my favorite fighting move is of all time is the drinking master

  • I may give this a go but a demo would have been nice. I wont discount it completely without but I will need to hear great things or see it at a friends first.

  • If a tree falls in the forest but no one is around is it really a tree and did it really fall?

I have no clue…but this game has no demo so it has no chance of being bought by me.

  • Looking funny, but I’ll wait for a review before buying (I’ll also need to buy a playstation move anyway, lol).

PS: This has nothing to do with this news but… Kratos will be playable in the new Mortal Kombat game, I thought it was a nice news to tell, haha. Check the link for more infos: http://techandgamingnews.blogspot.com/2010/12/uber-violent-kratos-featured-in-ps3s.html

  • I bought it, but the camera doesn’t seem to work too well for me. I feel like you need a perfect setup to really get it to work well. Oh well, it was only $15.

  • Picked it up last night. The game definitely works, but I think the lighting in my apartment (as well as the space between me and the PSeye) makes it difficult for the game to key me out. But all things considered, if still does a hell of a job, and when I am scaled down to the background, the fuzzies around me are barely noticeable. The moves definitely work (making a Haduken with your hands lunges your forward, and arching back makes you sommersault). The game is definitely hilarious, and I love the addition of cinematics with your as the main character.

Here is a suggestion for you guys, for future patches. How about a casual mode, where you can save yourself in “attack positions” (like with the comic poses) and then the game will cut you out and you can play the game with your own character (using the Dual Shock). It might lend some fun to the game for those who don’t always have the right configuration.

      Hi Sindred,
      thanks for the thumbs up!

Yeah, the idea sounds a lot like Photo Dojo on Nintendo DS. Having said that, it would fun.

  • This game could be really good or really bad, Plus like some others said this may work for some but not others due to room variables. If you put out a demo and it works for people then you will sell a lot more units, including one to me.

    • Teemu Mäki-Patola

      Hi Bigdaddy6703,
yeah I can totally understand your point. There is actually a demo coming but due to December being so tight and full month it will make it out in the beginning of January.

  • bring a demo out plz im broke right now bc of christmas but bring a demo and to the fred guy that called me a troll other day get a life u comment on almost all ps blog posts and under google ur a troll so kiss my a$#

  • So far I’m really liking it, I”m going to have to adjust the lighting though to get the best out of it. Yes, it is quite the workout. I didn’t think it would be honeslty, I figure I’d just punch and kick a little but I find myself jumping all over. I do feel like you need to wear a bright jump suit with a black background and flood lights to make it work perfectly anyway. Still, I’m really enjoying it.

  • I just want to say that THIS GAME IS AWESOME!!!! its fun, its a workout and its hilarious!

  • Love the game! Any chance for add-on content in the future?

  • Woo This Game Is Awesome and Fun. That Will Be Cool For Some DLC:)

  • Got to use my headband next time ^^

  • I purchased this game last night. It’s great fun and my brother and I had a lot of fun watching me go at it through the levels. It was fun to see myself in the comic strips and it was fun to see myself in action.

The only thing that bites is that Kung-Fu LIVE literally needs a lot of distance between the PlaystationEye and yourself. My room gives me about 6 feet and unfortunately that isn’t enough for this game. With the room I have, I can only see my upper torso-from my waist up. Still a whole lot of fun though! Super thumbs up.

  • Since your responding to people…

    1. Whats Your Favorite Kind of Pizza and What Toppings?

    2. Dog or Cat?

    3. Coca-Cola or Pepsi?

    4. MAC or PC?

    5. First person shooter -or- Third person shooter?

  • what vern mentioned above about the setup.. This is why I’m reluctant to bubuy without testing on a demo.. afraid it won’t work well.. You guys should release a dojo demo of some sort so we can test the game :)

  • I have to say, the game was so much fun. There were tears running from my eyes watching my son pose, and fight his way through ninja infested battle grounds. Great job on the game!

  • Oh, to clarify, the tears were from laughing so hard. :)

  • People can go on youtube, to see people that just bought the game test it out. It looks like it works pretty well. Just Type in the game name with gameplay…

  • What’s up, video-game-company-CEO-with-the-coolest-name-on-planet-Earth, Mr Teemu Mäki-Patola

I’ve been looking forward to this game since it was announced.

Is there any word on release dates for Hong Kong (as in “the home of Kung Fu legends”) and the rest of Asia?

    • Teemu Mäki-Patola

      Yo PityTheFool852,
yeah the name kicks as internationally. Not once but usually twice, I have to repeat it and then people just shrug. :)

Asia and Japan is unfortunately coming only next year, hopefully in January.

  • I played through 6 levels of this last night after work. It was a great stress reliever, and quite a workout! I ended up having to take another shower before going to bed, I was so sweaty. It was very cool seeing the game respond to the different martial arts styles I know. Also, I learned the hard way that I need to reposition the PSEye for this game…I really hope my wife doesn’t notice the dent in our basement wall from my kick. This game is awesome guys, thanks!

    • Teemu Mäki-Patola

      Hi Chimaera9,
that sounds like an awesome evening getting rid of some everyday frustrations! :) Sorry about the dent and super many thanks for the thumbs up and for telling your story!

  • Thanks for the responses. Also thank you for making a PSeye game, I do not have Move yet so it is nice to see the PSeye getting some lovi’n again.

Also it does not hurt to feed that Kinect itch either for us PS3 users ;)

  • I saw the trailer and I bought it. It’s the first game I’ve purchased on psn on impulse. $15 makes it a higher-priced psn download but it is absolutely worth it. I have no regrets which is usually not the case with impulse purchases. I do not have optimal space.. only 6ft from the camera…but i decided to skip my cardio workout and started dripping sweat from 20 minutes of play.

Question: I read that you can export your comic panel images but i am wondering if someone sitting off to the side can use a controller to help get a screen cap of the live action as well? I wouldnt mind turning my jumpkick into my wall paper.

Suggestion: Can PSeye do voice recognition? If I could just yell “HADOUKEN” and shoot out a fireball i would be in heaven.

    Thanks for making such awesomeness.

    • Teemu Mäki-Patola

      Hi Hellboy11,
      thanks for the support!

We actually had this functionality on one of the earlier demo builds. Maybe its time to get it back for the next DLC.

PSEye has good directional microphones, so basically yes. We haven’t used that feature yet. Another good suggestion. Thanks!

  • Getting it on Thursday, AFTER I’m done with my finals lol. I can’t risk getting it before that. First PSN game I’ll be buying at full price though (wait, second after Flower).

  • Thanks for the video. It’s nice and interesting. But I wonder how long is the sp experience? does it have a workout mode?

    • Teemu Mäki-Patola

The single player campaign lasts from 2 to 6 hours depending on the difficulty level.

There is a Custom Fight mode, where you design your own battles, which works well for workout. You can even tune the enemy timescale (how fast they are) and how much your movements are boosted.

I find that the survival modes are best workout modes though. You can also track your success/improvements by how far you get.

  • I really hope I get a bandana!

    Great job Virtual Air Guitar!

  • Hey Teemu! This is a great game. I bought it right away =) Besides the bug of getting just me into the screen, everything works fine and its really fun.

This game has lots of potential and it would be great if you pass your ideas over to Sony so other developers can create games that have people as the controllers!

  • This game is awesome! Great job on the game!

  • Too bad I don’t have enough space in my living room to play this game. Luckily, we are going to rearrange the living room soon.

  • Looks fun but in a $4.99 price point kinda way (feel me)!

  • too bad i can’t try this yet! knee injuries suck…………………….

  • Good tip, now if you don’t mind. I’ll be putting on my outfit that resemble Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star and practice my Hakuto Shinken (Fist of the North Star) and use it to beat the thug in the game, They’re already dead when I’m playing this game.

  • Kung Fu Banana Giveaway? Am I reading correctly? I love banana’s especially ones of the kung-fu variety! Can I has a Kung-Fu banana now? Coolest giveaway ever. I cant play the game cause I use a cane to stand and walk, but I plan to buy it anyways and watch my friends play it. y’know that living vicariously through others stuff and what not. keep em coming and dont forget my Banana!

  • It’s seems this game does come with extra content.

I’m working on the quest to have my friends buy this game as well…hopefully I get the trophy.

P.S. You were right…wax on, wax off does work.

  • Wow this is the Best controller less game on the PSN and maybe on all platforms because of how well the game reads your moves… its so much more ACCURATE than I thought and the story and cut scenes are terrific… Im shocked its just 15 bucks! I hope Sony rewards your great work with future projects!

  • PS3…
    It Only Does Everything…
    Including controller-less gaming!

    You are the controller…lol.

  • Kung Fu Live is a good party game

  • I love this game, it really works well and I can’t wait to finish my finals and get back to it.

  • Great game, nothing like it on the market. You do need ALOT of space + ALOT of light for it to pick up well. If you have mirrors behind your setup(like I do) you will need to cover them as well. There is an issue with the dash, sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn’t, it might be chi(games energy) related.

If you play this game daily for 6 months for 20mins a day, you would prob be pretty ripped…lol

    Overall 9/10

  • Thanks for the response! Great to see you trying to interact with your fans!

Plans to use the Move controlllers to superimpose weapons? Would be easier than using real swords…. :)

  • got a 4 day weekend, took friday and monday off to spread my last few vacation days..

    looking forward to playing this..

if its not good…. there will be hell to pay…

    (insert evil laugh here)

no but seriously, I am looking forward to trying this game out

  • is it region locked? :/

2 PS EYE games wont work with foreign PS3s-the game locks itself up.

i dont want to spend USD15 on a game that may not even boot up on my Asian PS3 -.-“

  • I’m Gonna get this gonna have to make room in my house 1st but i’mma get it and start whopping some butt
