Your PSN Questions—Answered

It’s been a busy few weeks on the PlayStation Network with several big announcements and new apps launching. In the month of November alone, we announced the launch of the NHL GameCenter Live application, the availability of Hulu Plus outside of PlayStation Plus, the VUDU app on PSN, and BBC America programming in the PlayStation Store. We’ve also shared a new episode of The Tester 2 each week and just last week we announced a number of new games on PlayStation Home, as we marked the 2-year anniversary of the platform. And, in addition to the PSN updates we’ve shared, there have also been a number of new updates for PlayStation Plus subscribers and new features in the PlayStation Rewards program.

There’s no doubt that PSN is in the midst of tremendous growth as we continue to expand our entertainment offering. We recently surpassed 60 million registered accounts worldwide – an increase of 53% in North America in just the last year – and we continue to see our users soak up the new entertainment content offerings. In fact, movies and TV series purchased on the PlayStation Network video delivery service increased 42% compared to a year ago and we’re seeing that our users are quite engaged, with well over 70% using PSN weekly.

It’s been busy and we’re certainly excited about how far we’ve come in a short time, but the busyness has also kept me away from addressing some of your questions and there have been some great ones. I wanted to take some time before we ended the year to look back at previous posts and address some of questions that you have. I’ve also cleared my schedule this afternoon to answer any further questions you might have on PSN and about some of our new services and partners, so drop your questions in the below comments and I’ll do my best to address them.

We’re lucky to have such loyal users. Thanks for continuing to come back and please keep on sending us your questions, thoughts and suggestions. They are important and we are listening!

PlayStation Plus

Q: Field Runners was in the July 6 and the upcoming December 14 publish. Will content continue to be recycled? – ExPresident (December 1, 2010 post)

A: PlayStation Plus has circulated a lot of great content since the service was launched in June and based on what we think our users want, we’ll look to bring back some of those popular items. This will not affect our goals to bring new experiences and discount options to PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Q: Are there any plans to add a digital rental service to PlayStation Plus? – JacobeAbam (December 1, 2010 post)

A: While we don’t have any news to announce around a digital rental service for PlayStation Plus, our goal is to include a full game trial each month when possible, which allows gamers to try out PS3 titles for up to one full hour. Recently, we’ve launched full game trials for Red Faction Guerrilla, Warhawk, inFamous, God of War I, ll and Prototype, and we’re looking forward to upcoming releases, like Borderlands. And, don’t forget your PlayStation Plus includes access to PSP minis and PSone games as part of your subscription.

Q: Europe received the Fallout 3 DLC and Sam & Max season for free when we receive older titles. When can we expect newer discounted or free content? – Vengeance88 (October 20, 2010 post)

A: Content for PlayStation Plus subscribers differ for each region and that is dependant on a lot of different variables that aren’t always determined by us. Sometimes it’s our publishers that make decisions on how many or where to share certain content and sometimes it’s simply a case of where it makes the most sense for a particular game or feature. Having said that, we’re always looking for ways to extend the content we offer across different regions and hopefully you’ve seen that in some of the recent content that we’ve released, like the December 14th publish that included the upcoming featured download of the Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse season.

Q: When does the free three month promotion end for PlayStation Plus? – eatthemall (PS+ FAQ post)

A: The promotion that currently adds three months to your 12-month subscription is ongoing and users who subscribe to the promotion will now get 15 months of PlayStation Plus for the 12-month cost. If you’re not yet a subscriber, what other promotional offers would help you make the decision to subscribe?

Q: Can we have a progress update on cross game chat and any other features that will be available for PlayStation Plus subscribers? – xKOROSHIYAx (PS+ FAQ post)

A: I don’t have any progress updates to share at this time, but I can tell you that we’re listening to the things you want and whether or not we can release them now, we take all of the features you’ve been asking for seriously.

PlayStation Rewards

Q: When will the PlayStation Rewards program be available to Canada? – Chowbacca (October 27, 2010)

A: The PlayStation Rewards program is currently in beta and only available to GAP members and PlayStation Plus subscribers (who have opted into marketing emails as of October 24). If everything goes well during the beta period, our plan is to extend the offering to Canada in Spring 2011.

Q: Will the PlayStation Rewards program be available in Europe? – Coheno (October 27, 2010)

A: The other regions have shown interest, but we haven’t announced any plans to expand in Europe at this time.

Q: Why do trophy counts not affect the PlayStation Rewards program? I think trophy level should determine a gamer’s status in the program. – Mirauder (October 27, 2010)

A: The PlayStation Rewards program is still currently in beta and will remain an evolving program post-launch. Currently, we have incorporated the use of trophies into the Quest system announced earlier this week. Quests tie into more than just games, giving PlayStation Rewards members opportunities to gain progress from all aspects of the PlayStation Network, such as PlayStation Home, original programming and more.

Q: How long is the beta period for the PlayStation Rewards program? – LightAce (October 27, 2010)

A: We are expecting PlayStation Rewards to come out of beta in April 2011.

Q: Will the PlayStation Reward levels be based on games we beat from this date? Or will it include the games/trophies we have already beaten/earned on PS3? – cdsly16 (October 27, 2010)

A: The PlayStation Rewards program is not retroactive. It will take into account all the new games that you have played since the launch of the program.

VUDU

Q: Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t Hulu, VUDU, Netflix, and the Store all be competing for purchases of the same content on each and every PS3? – JBracin70 (November 16, 2010)

A: Actually, no. There are quite a few differences in terms of the type of content provided across the different services, the window of availability of content, and the payment options, etc. The bottom line is that we’re extending our content offering with a choice of partners to bring you the entertainment experience you want.

Q: Isn’t this video service cannibalizing on Sony’s current PSN video service? – Neil (November 16, 2010)

A: No, actually all of the different options haven’t cannibalized the PSN video delivery service, as proven by the 42% year-over-year growth. The PSN wallet and the compatibility with the PSN cards on PlayStation Store purchases have proven to be a great solution of convenience that complements our other content offerings.

Hulu Plus

Q: When will the service be available to Canadians? – Jeanse27 (November 4, 2010)

A: At this point, we don’t have any news to share on the exact timing for bringing Hulu Plus to Canada, but I can tell you that we’re exploring ways to bring our Canadian friends more of the content we’ve released in the US. However, it does bear mentioning that these plans are also contingent on Hulu Plus and when they extend their services to Canada.

Q: Any chance we can get Move support for both the Netflix and Hulu Plus app down the road? – Philaroni (November 4, 2010)

A: While you can use the Move controllers to navigate through the XMB, we don’t have anything to announce today for full support of Netflix or Hulu Plus. VUDU has announced that they will support PlayStation Move motion control with their new UI, VUDU 2.0, which will automatically update to your PS3 sometime this month.

Q: Do I have to pay for the monthly service with my credit card or can I use my PlayStation Wallet? – Rene_Led (November 4, 2010)

A: At this time you will have to pay for your Hulu Plus subscription with your credit card on Hulu.com, but we’ll certainly share updates on payment methods as they become available.

The Tester

Q: Can you consider including Canadians in your contests or at least run Canada specific contests? – krae_man (November 2, 2010)

A: Great suggestion, and we’ll most certainly be thinking about ways to integrate Canada and/ or Canadian specific challenges into future Tester series. Please continue to share your suggestions as we evolve the series, contests and overall experience.

NHL GameCenter

Q: Will we see similar sports applications, such as the NFL Sunday Ticket or NBA League Pass, on the PlayStation Network? – TABBYG87 (November 11, 2010)

A: We’re focused on providing you with many choices for your entertainment needs. We’ll continue to expand the catalogue of content you have access to on the PlayStation Network, however today we don’t have any news to share specific to NFL Sunday Ticket or NBA League Pass.

Q: Will the free NHL GameCenter app go away after the PlayStation Plus subscription has ended? – Dagger_32 (November 11, 2010)

A: The app itself won’t disappear from your XMB, but the free access to the app will discontinue once your PlayStation Plus subscription has ended and you will need to purchase it. As with all of the other content offered through PlayStation Plus, only subscribers will have access to the exclusive, free or discounted offers within PlayStation Plus, which includes the NHL GameCenter app being free to subscribers.

  • Can I please have an Android app that lets me manage my account? It would be nice to be able to send/receive PSN messages on my phone, and even just look at and compare trophies with friends.

    • We’re absoultely looking into ideas like these to expand the PlayStation experience, but we don’t have anything officially to announce at this time.

  • Will you ever add cross-game party chat to the plastation network?

    • We know this is something our community is excited about, and assure you, if there is an announcement to make, this community will be the first to know.

  • Please bring NBA League Pass….PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • heres one: will the NA region get the newly announced Iphone/Android app that the EU is getting??

  • Great FAQ Susan. Besides the three free months, what about a free game to keep forever like EU offered with LBP1? Plus needs more Home items, EU Plus has an exclusive space, emotes, shirts, furniture for EU members. We just got one zombie hat that isn’t even an exclusive item but a mall item.

I would also like to see Amazon Videos on Demand app, for PSN to offer online management for friends list and messaging via the site and for SCEA to produce an official PS app like EU just announced but also include BlackBerry, Android, Symbian and iPhone OS.

    • We really want to hear the suggestions on what promotional offers are compelling for potential PlayStation Plus subscribers. We will be conducting broader research on offers and are already looking at this as an option.

The Home suggestion is do-able and we can have the team drum up some ideas.

  • @2 please read the article

i wish we had Football season passes.. especially NCAA..wouldn’t mind a NFL one as well

  • Are there any updates to the Sam and Max error code?

    Thanks you!

    • We distributed vouchers for the bundle last night via PS3 System Messaging. Unfortunately, this didn’t cover all users affected. The remaining customers will receive another System Message with their voucher tonight. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused and thanks for your patience!

  • Why the prices of Playsation Home are so High?

    • First of all, tons of things in Home are free like clothing items such as Tester shirts, Star Wars costumes, personal spaces, etc. And for low cost items, you can buy thousands of items for less than a dollar. The Home economy is based on the principle that anyone can get a lot of free stuff right away and all the time. Or, if you want upgraded or more upscale or rare items, there are a lot of cool items for purchase.

  • Great article. I have one more question, is the problem with the Sam & Max download fixed already? Tried yesterday and still has the same problem. Thanks

  • Will this particular document be evolving or will you come out with a “Questions Answered” blog post every month or so?

    • This particular post was targeted for today so that I could check in with all of you. We’ll continue to address the questions you have on an ongoing basis and as new features and services are rolled out. To that end, the best way to address the new and ongoing questions will likely be in the form of periodic Q&A posts. Of course, we do keep an eye on the questions coming in on various posts and at PlayStation Blog Share. If the community thinks having me do this on a regular basis is helpful, I’d be happy to make the time.

  • Dear Playstation, All I want for Christmas is Cross-Game Chat. That is all.

  • When will i be able to download Sam & Max? I never received the inbox message.

  • I love how cross game chat has been one of the most requested items for going on close to 5 years but they say they take our requests seriously come on, really? It would be nice if they could at least give us something like “Quarter 1, 2011 or Quarter 4, 2012” or if it isn’t going to happen just say so.

  • I’m gonna play freestyle (PSN) get it, just like xbox uses “Let’s play Live” I’m gonna start PSN as “Let’s play Freestyle”. you know since PSN is free

  • I got a question, will you guys be sending out invites again for PS Rewards?

    • Right now we have a good amount of participation in the PlayStation Rewards beta. Please look to the public roll out in April 2011 and hope to see you then.

  • Copy protected saves are a pain, any plans to offer cloud storage for game saves?

  • How come i still can’t download Sam & Max?(error code 80023102)

  • Why does it take so long for the Playstation Rewards Beta bar to update? Is there a certain time it updates?

    • Please remember that PlayStation Rewards is an annual program. The progress meter reflects behavior across periods of time and will not greatly advance from one thing over another. We are in beta so that we can see what works and improve for our roll out in April. Ensuring that progress is clear is an important part of the program and we appreciate the feedback.

  • Why can’t I download sam and max I get an error and It will not let me download it its free for ps plus members and im a ps plus member please help.

  • Why do we suddenly have to pay sales tax, when prior to the latest system update, we did not? At the very least, some form of foreshadowing or advance notice would have sufficed.

  • Can we get a Playstation Rewards icon on the XMB?

    • We’re working on it, but we really wanted to get the beta program into our consumers hands as quickly as possible so we focused on access via PlayStation.com. PlayStation Rewards is being shaped by the community so this is the type of feedback that helps us prioritize development. Thanks.

  • My Netflix loads up, and then the screen goes black. Is there a way to fix this?

  • When can we expect a major redesing of the XMB?

    • There is nothing to announce at this time, as the XMB currently provides an easy to use interface with quick access to all your entertainment and media needs.

  • Will a trophy room ever be released in PlayStation Home?

    • We know having PlayStation Trophies in Home is an important request. Hope you’ve seen the game integration with Street Fighter 4 and Resident Evil 5 where items are unlocked based on the trophies you earned. This is one big step towards integrating Trophies with Home.

  • for people asking about sam and max….just go into the all ames area under “S” and download them there. thats what i did tuesday night after the regular option to download all at once froze my ps3 and disappeared after i restarted.

  • This obsession with getting cross game chat is just SAD.

  • Susan,I am an adult Home Use and Ps Plus subscriber.Sure would be nice to have something cool that we could be proud of to wear inside of PS Home to show our support of Plus.Europes Home currently is leading the pack in giving their supporters Emotes, furniture to buy that is PS Plus releated and such.
We really have nothing at all in Home.
I mean,we have rewards program but…We plus users/Home users feel VERY left out and I can speak for a few of them.

  • Also, will there be any other chance of getting into the Rewards Program before the public release?

    • We currently have great participation numbers in the Rewards Program beta. If anything changes, we’ll certainly let people know. Thanks for your interest.

  • I appreciate that you guys tried to address some of our questions, but you really didn’t tell us anything. The most important questions were glossed over with things like “we don’t have any info on that feature today”. I’m kind of tired of getting that answer over, and over, and over. Cross game chat especially, can you at least tell us if you’re working on it or not? Rather than say you have no news? Honestly this post probably annoyed me more than it informed me, because you really didn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know and sidestepped the questions that we’ve been wanting actual answers to for years now. Frankly it’s insulting and patronizing.

    • Am really sorry you feel that way. The intent of this post is not to make announcements, but to engage and check in with all of you. It would be strange to just ignore the question regarding cross-game chat. So the answer really is, there’s nothing to announce today. We know you all want it. And when we have new information, this community will be the first to know.

  • for people asking about SAM & MAX ….just go into the all games area under “S” and download them there. thats what i did tuesday night after the regular option to download all at once froze my ps3 and disappeared after i restarted.

  • what if i buy a 2006 wrapped ps3 game, will that count in the ps reward beta?
and what happen if i buy two copies of the same game? will reward points from each copy?

  • I have some questions: Why the trophies take so long to appear on PSN? And why some trophies games simply do not exist on PSN, like Scott Pilgrim, for example. There is the possibility of APIs for consultations with trophies and ranking of assembly?

    • Trophies appear immediately for the local user in the Trophy Collection on the PS3. They are periodically synchronized with PSN to make sure that they can be compared with friends and other users. The synchronization process happens as frequently as possible, but may not be done at the instant a trophy is received.

For the second part of your question, all trophies for all games should be on PSN, available through the XMB. If some Trophy information is missing from PlayStation.com, it’s
possible that some error has occurred that we need to address.

Lastly, we urge users to checkout the Portable ID and the Trophy features on PlayStation.com to take full advantage of Trophies.

  • Is it possible for you to extend facebook functionality to sub-accounts on PlayStation 3 instead of only master accounts?

    • We can include this feature in our broader market research to see if it is widely desired. In the meantime, master accounts can enjoy sharing their info via the great Facebook functionality.

  • Would be cool to get an Andriod/iPhone app in North America where you can check your stats plus message your friends.

Another cool feature would be Xross Game Chat, and I do have to agree with @13. How seriously are you guys taking it if this has been the biggest request and you still can’t give us sold info?

  • @dh4645 That doesn’t work, I tried that earlier today.

SAM AND MAX. MAKE IT HAPPEN. PS3 Only does everything (if they let you)

  • PSN doesn’t have the social integration on a network wide level that is seen on the competition. PS3 is entering its 5th year. Entertainment offerings are great, but will the network infrastructure itself mature anytime soon? There are many features missing that would make PSN a stronger network for the gamers.

    • Hmmm…not sure what you’re specifically referring to, because PSN actually has a ton of great network wide features like: Friends lists, Trophy comparison with friends, Portable ID, Video chat with any USB camera, Picture sharing with those on friends list,System status (tells friends what game you’re playing or if your watching Netflix or Hulu) and Trophy sharing on Facebook. And PlayStation Home allows voice chat where you can meet people with similar interests. Plus, many popular games have in-game party systems where you can invite and play with your friends and use in-game chat to communicate. And don’t forget that we have regular and frequent firmware updates that continuously evolve the service.

  • Question re: Playstation Rewards. Does purchasing hardware count toward your Rewards progress, e.g. purchasing a new Slim for Christmas?

  • Hi Susan,

Loyal to the end and good job on the success of PSN. One question though, why cant I get PSN HD movies to play in 5.1 when all else (Blu Ray, Disc Based Games, Non Disc Based Games and even VuDu) does? This is my set-up:

    Samsung TV
    Denon receiver
Audio out through optical to receiver
    HDMI video out to TV

  • @1 Guticb:
there is a few devs on the android platform that use current APIs to show some things. This is limited to trophies(comparing and showing a fair amount) as well as friends online currently. Search pub:”Nicholas Ortiz” to get the better(in my opinion) apps/widgets. He has free and paid for versions of both the friends widget and the trophies app/widget.

  • I hope this dosent take a whole year to answer
    Why isn’t crackle on ps3
Were is skpe or google video..hello

Why hasn’t the browser had a real upgrade to chrome or opera ps3 has been out to long not have this it’s as if you forgot it’s there

Google tv should been out the same time on the ps3 as it is on the Sony tv since we didn’t get

    play tv

    • Actually, there is some content from Crackle currently syndicated on the PlayStation Store in the video section and we’re working on bringing even more content to you.

  • When are you going to Fix:

    1. In-Game XMB, we don’t need everything to show since we can’t use it while in-game.

    2. When I get a message in-game I should have to go through the entire menu to read it. PS Button should bring it up.

    3. Allow patches to be downloaded in the background.

    4. PSN App there should be one by now that lets us Message and check everything on our account. Fix this.

    5. X-Game Chat Why is this not done yet? It’s been several years now, no more excuses!

    • I’ll pass this info along to the development team. Please remember that Playstation.Blog Share is available to you so we can formally field your feedback.

  • When will we see a Google TV app for the PS3? That will really put you on top of the gaming market. Also, an android app that lets you control the PS3 would be nice as well.

  • Why no one asked if we will be able to deactivate our systems by ourselves without needing to be on that specific system. I’m saying this because of the dead ps3, i have a death ps3 60gb.
And another question. Is there a way to have the reward program in Mexico?

  • @39
    Nicolas** no h in it

  • FANtastic communication, I applaud this effort and it really shows how hard Sony is trying and deserving of customer loyalty. Keep it up please!

I also echo and support the previous poster who asked for a Playstation Android app, would love expanded connectivity with my Droid X. I’m sure if the rumored PSP Android phone comes out, that may be probable.

  • Any chance we could see street fighter alpha 3 in the psn.

  • Can we get a web based store for the PSN?
Can you fix the Playstation website so it works on Safari. It logs you out every time you click anything. Even after erasing all the cookies. It still logs me out
Can you start a customer service on Twitter to answer questions?
How about a free fix for people with YLOD?

  • You know what forget the last question. If i was to get only one question after rubbing that shiny golden genie bottle it would have to be why havent we gotten more PSone classics, more specifically REAL classics like:

    Wipeout XL
    Need For Speed
    Gex 2 Enter the Gecko
    Colony Wars
    G Police
    Parasite Eve
    Lagend Of Dragoon (SONY?)

    • We currently have well over 100 PSone classics available on PS Store. We are constantly looking to bring more. There a business issues on a title by title basis, i.e., music licensing, voice actor licenses, etc. that need to be cleared, which sometimes may prevent a title from being released.

  • How do you submit a question? I want to ask about Resident Evil Portable.

  • I must stress again that you MUST do something about giving us access to those PSP Demos. Those who do NOT own a PSP, cannot play any of those demos, and that my dear friend, is a MASSIVE MISTAKE ON SONY’S PART & YOU are LOSING a LOT of money!!
    And here’s why!

I like many others do NOT own a PSP. But just cause I don’t own a PSP, should NOT mean I can’t play a PSP Demo.

I love the GOW series & played em all, except that PSP game. GOW: Chains of Olympus.

Why can’t you release a PSP Demo & then let us PS Plus members who do NOT OWN A PSP play the demo via our PS3?

If you do implement this, the potential for you is MASSIVE!

That way, I can play the PSP Demo on my PS3, and in turn, if I really like it, that would indeed, PUT the thought in my head of wanting to BUY a PSP.

Having those PSP Demo’s are great, and like the PS3 Demo’s, members download them, play them, & based on how much they like/love that Demo, odds are much greater they WILL buy that game!

And that’s the point of releasing demo’s, to see the interest gamers have in that title. I know that I have downloaded all the PS3 Demos, and based on some of them, I went out and bought that game.
