  • As much as I want to spare all the flattering, I can’t help but express how much of a huge Twisted Metal fan I am. I’m sure you hear this a lot, but some of my most fondest memories involve playing sessions of Twisted Metal 2 with my closest friends back in middle school. I’ve been gaming for 20+ years, and no other gameplay experience has ever measured up to the fun I had with that game. To create something that evokes so much emotion from so many people must truly mean that it’s special. Needless to say, when you guys rolled out with Sweet Tooth at this past E3, I was floored.

Here’s hoping that TMPS3 is highly successful when the game releases.

Just another potential question to be answered, in case you decide to do a follow-up:

1.) During the time 989 possessed the development rights to TM, your comrade Scott Campbell designed the ridiculously awesome (and another one of my favs) Rogue Trip for GT Interactive. I always wondered whether or not you considered jumping on board with that project and what happened there. Also, did Rogue Trip inspire any design choices made in future TM titles, as it appears that the design for ambulance in TMPS3 may have spawned from that?

  • I’ve played about a gajillion hours of TM2 (Thumper on Holland, Hard Difficulty, no homing napalms, no missile machine guns) and I just have one request for the new game:

When you’re driving a car and you turn the wheel to the right, your car goes right. When you’re driving a car in reverse and you turn the wheel to the right, the front of your car goes left. In TM Black this wasn’t the case. In TM2 it is. Simple, and it will make die-hards like me very happy! :)

  • I’m honestly really worried about this latest TM. Simply put, I’m not yet convinced this latest game is offering a solid enough evolution of the gameplay for this new generation. Now, more of the same is OK, except that TM represents a kind of shooter genre that has died with the times. The high speed frenetic shooter genre has today been surpassed by the CoDs and Halos.

I don’t know what TM needs to reach that level, but I think it’ll take some kind of RE4 rethink or CoD4 mega adjustments across the board (which looks more in line of what is going on with this latest TM). Or maybe just selling out and taking TM in the direction of slower paced more realistic car combat to appeal to fans of today’s popular shooters. It’s really tough to say because one could argue that TM might just be its own thing too.

I really hope for the best for you guys, because I personally don’t mind more of the same. But I’d hate for it to be just a niche title for the 5 of us who still like this. Both Quake and UT have kind of died silently, so I really don’t want TM to suffer the same fate. I really hope this game represents a return to form, and not a whimpering old death blow.

  • Umm… It’s your idea, and you might think it’s just a joke, but if you want more success in Europe or whatever…

Soccer. With cars. And guns. Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars is my favorite PSN-downloaded game, always has been, and I only ever had one complaint about it: No guns. TM can fix this. Do it.

    Signed please.

  • Dear Jaff and Company:

About the T rating we’re going to see on the new Twisted Metal game -debates that take place on forums circle around the notion that cutscenes are what garner the M rating. I believe it and it matters little to me.

Some classic fans of the series may be disappointed about this direction, I’m a fan enough to not be phased.

Part of me is bummed that we live in a culture which creates “sacrificed” ideas when making a piece of performance art all-encompassing and inviting to the majority. Interactive or not.

Maybe videos via PSN, rated M, can help end this spark before it is truly stoked (which I far from hope for because I want this series to succeed with this game and every other one after:)

P.S.: Jaff’: you were seriously envious of the God of War 3 Slurpee cups (and custom Kratos Fury slurpee flavor!) (re: GameDirector roundtable PSN video- awesome BTW!)

Please make this happen with the new TWIST3D M3TAL! do whatever YOU MUST:

We need a Sweet Tooth flavored Slurpee!

Thanks to you and your group of hardworking folks!

    – John

  • Can’t wait for this game! Going to be awesome.

  • Funny Jaffe.. My favorite special is also Shadow’s attack from TM2!

I love that HWAAAAHOOOOOOOW sound it does when you first use it.. and then you see that little shadow flying over to the poor victim who then explodes and flys 10 feet into the air! haha good times.. I hope there’s a similar special in TM PS3.

Have a happy new year Jaffy boy!

  • You know that it would make easing the transition to your car combat from the regular fighting gore fest, by having Kratos, the God of War hosting the tournament in the pursuit of the ultimate glory and the prize would not be a wish, but to be a God themselves!

    That would be EPICALLY AWESOME!

  • Awesome looking forward to this game!!!!

  • The camera gave me plenty of headaches in all the Twisted Metal games except part 2. I hope you ask players in the alpha stages if they get huge headaches. BTW most games do not give headaches(mainly Twisted Metal). Also does the next game in the series have famous buildings like Eiffel Tower,Lady Liberty, Great Pyramid of Giza, etc?

  • David and ESP crew,
Liked TM1 loved TM2 and Black.

I have a concern with a multiplayer gameplay aspect.

The focus is always on number of kills, get more kills, how many kills did I get, kills, kills, KILLS! You have said that the game will not be like COD’s insta-kills, but more of a cat-and-mouse chase across the map. I love that! But what about when I am the one who beats down an enemy by tailing them and wearing away their life, only to have someone else swoop in and finish them off. Will I get any recognition for doing all the hard work? Will people become annoying vultures who pray on my near-dead enemies. I realize that I should be skilled enough to finish them off it, but what can I say – I’m obsessed with XP and being justly rewarded. Who knows – maybe Dave will tell me to suck it up!

    Thanks
Good luck reading through 400+ posts. Doesn’t sound like a fun way to spend the holidays. You must really love us!

  • Best experience from twisted metal for me were from the early games.

Soundtrack on TM rob zombie was great to listen to, I hope the new game has some sweet music for destruction :) (what would be awesome is adding some type of track list to your gaming )

TM2: Thumper was the best for me. Ice blast run up to your opponent and flame-thrower action, and just watch his life bar drop >:)

TM2: I also used Twister a lot, had the speed going on and the special move was great but, could also get you killed.

    Really want the co-op multi-player online/local play
    Soundtrack: some motorhead? hehe
    Character: a nice F1 character
Environment: blow up buildings….um I mean everything!

    can’t wait for this game!!

  • What from the new Twisted Metal are you doing that you wish you could of done in Twisted Metal Black?

  • Oh and how about a freaking Collector’s Edition?!! I would buy that in a heartbeat! I would love to get a sweettooth mask/head display.

  • I hope to see an LAPD faction with accessible pig masks >=D OUTLAW FTW!

  • Awesome blog post Mr. Jaffe. I’m even more willing now to put my pre-order down on your latest game, as if I wasn’t going to already! Haha! One of the things I liked the most about previous Twisted Metal games was the use of the “special powers” that all cars could use and would recharge fairly quickly over time. The ability to use the button combos for shooting the freeze ball, napalm, or going invisible to even Minion’s attack, shields, jumping and placing mines added a lot of fun strategy to those times when you just had yet to pick up a weapon worth a damn!

Thanks again and I am looking forward to the game a ton!

  • Will it have cheat-code enabled at split-screen multi-player like in the old ps1 and ps2 day?

  • Is Axel going to make any cool appearance?

  • What will the soundtrack be?

  • older twisted metal maps?

  • One reason I have always liked the games is because Sweet Tooth has always been a “Dad” to me (albeit an F-ed up, Twisted Dad). I used to have to sneak to play these games after hours on School nights when I was a little “Twister” and I STILL play these games to this day. I own every Twisted Metal game available (even the PSP ones)and even TM2 on PSN just because I love the series that much!

We regularly bust out the PS1 at parties and relive the good times we had staying at each others houses and playing the game and seeing the endings COUNTLESS times.

As far as Criticism goes: as long as you keep the same “Twisted” feel you guys will always have a fan in me. Don’t lose the original touch and you guys should have nothing to worry about even with new fans!

Sweet Tooth: “When they captured me, all I could think was, “What a waste!” All those people I hadn’t killed yet. Come the night of my execution, there must have been over a thousand people gathered outside to watch me fry. I was upset about that. There should have been more.”

  • Thanks for the Q&A. I have been a Twisted Metal-head since 1995 with the original TM, Twisted Metal 2 was played non-stop at my house with split-screen with my brothers in 96′ then Goldeneye 007 took over our household for multi-player in 1997. But we always came back to TM for our car battling needs.

My multi-player games before TM were..

    Super Mario Kart,Street Fighter,Battletoads & Double Dragon,Clay Fighter games,Mortal Kombat,Streets of Rage,Donkey Kong Country,Final Fight 2&3,Goof Troop (yes, Goof Troop..haha..it was a great SNES co-op game)Ken Griffy Jr Baseball,Killer Instinct,NBA Jam,Rock ‘n Roll Racing!,Side Pocket,Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time,Barkley: Shut Up and Jam!,NCAA Basketball,Tecmo Super NBA Basketball,Super Baseball Simulator 1.000,Super Bases Loaded,Super R.B.I Baseball. I’m sure i left out some..but these games gave me & my brothers awesome multi-player memories.

The TM series, just like these classics i mentioned, is a staple that kept the multi-player games continuing, i am glad & proud that i was part of the generation of the TM series. I’m ecstatic that TM is back! Twisted Metal-Heads Unite!

  • Did you ever expect Twisted Metal to be very popular when it first started?

  • I actually could see a soccer gameplay mode being enjoyable and fun. 2 goalies for each team, 3 strikers and 3 defensemen. It’d be great to see such utter carnage as the sides race to score a goal. Maybe it could be a magnetic ball that sticks to your car wherever it lands, then you launch it by pressing a button, and it flies away.

Anyway, I’ve barely played Twisted Metal (my mom was anti-violent games, kinda), but Vigilante 8: Second Offense was pretty close to it, so I know I’ll love this. Thanks for confirming multiple PSN IDs in online. It sucks when I play BOps with my bro, and I’m upset that even though I’m doing better, my progress doesn’t save at all. I will probably buy this day-one, and love it. Take your time developing it, I hate it when something comes out rushed.

  • First, thanks for taking the time to answer those questions. Its always great to see a creator interested in the fans as much as you guys are.

My question is pretty simple. I feel like Calling All Cars was a brilliant and enjoyable game that just didn’t get the attention it deserved for whatever reason, but I still think there’s something there with that simple gameplay. For me, Nuke seems to have drawn a little bit of inspiration from CAC, but its also much much larger. Have you guys considered including a mode similar to the old Calling All Cars but with a more Twisted take on it? Something much smaller and intimate than Nuke is what I’m sort of going at here. I feel like it’d be a great throwback to that little gem nobody played as well as taking full advantage of the fact that players will have grown accustomed to the controls and style of TM through the single player or other multiplayer modes and be able to better jump in and experience what made CAC so addicting. The competition in that game was fierce, especially with a group of friends nearby. I honestly feel like there’s still fun there with the capture and return style, something that might fit better in TM without having to stand on its own.

  • I love the twisted metal series and I know why people are mehh on twisted metal 2….YOU KILL OR GIVE EVERYONE A BAD ENDING!How would YOU like it if you face was smeered over the world or you thought you can fly so you jump off a cliff?THATS JUST DUSGUSTING since when was twisted metal brutal….sheez dont be a grinch, know off to laying twisted metal black a much more appropriate game

  • I’ve been a Twisted Metal fan since the beginning, and I was ecstatic when I heard about Black being developed by the original team.
I’m really pumped about the new one and it sounds like it’s definitely on the right track. It will be really awesome to see what you guys have always wanted to do but weren’t able to because of hardware restrictions.
Even though a teen rating might get to a bigger audience I wish the rating would just be a result of what you guys really want to put into it. If a more violent theme makes the story deeper I hope nothing is cut out only for the sake of making it easier for 12 year olds to get a hold of.
I would love to see the new TM have more emphasis on using collisions as a weapon. Having a heavier feel to the vehicles during impacts without making them slower or less responsive and good drifting would be a blast. My favorite kills were shooting somebody down to low health from a distance then turbo smashing into them for the kill and watching their carcass of a car flip and spin out of control or power sliding them into a wall and finishing them off! Maybe that’s more of a suggestion than a question. So I guess my question is “why not include my awesome idea?”

  • This is the best, wicked, demented car combat gaming series with always the best stories! I can’t wait to pick this one up! Give me some holy hell dark evil twists of metal joy please!!!

  • Who cares about being first to comment? It’s all about being 420th.

  • i hope im not too late, but something i noticed in the debut trailer….WHO THROWS AWAY A WHOLE CUBAN CIGAR!!!!!!!!!!!, those things are expensive :(

  • Soccor is gay, europe is gay,USA ALL THE WAY. cool! now wheres my sweet tooth doll?

  • I feel Rob zombie Should be played constintly in the backround, i know you were not involved in TM4, but that was a good move

  • I know I mentioned it before but Dollface… Schwing! I was very impressionable when I played TM Black and Dollface… Dollface really did a number on me. I’m still not sure whether that’s a good thing. Some of your staff must feel the same way, keeping her as a main character and all. Damn!

  • Please make a Twisted Metal Beta for PS plus members.

  • my first memory of twisted metal was when i got a ps1 for christmas back in 96′ the one game i got with it was twisted metal! ive been a diehard fan eversince. i’m also obsessed with sweettooth and his personality! best game villian of all time.
you guys are great jaffe and cambell!!!

cant wait for your masterpiece to hit!!!!!!!!!

  • I’ll take a signed figure.

    My post for getting one:

What’s the history behind naming the series ‘Twisted Metal’? Besides the obvious car demolishing, gut wrenching, and brutal games they are. Who came up with it and how? Why?

Were you pow-wowing one day, brainstorming: “Let’s call it, ‘Super sick cars’, or ‘Mass destruction'” and all of a sudden: “GUYS, I got it…’Twisted Metal'”

Did it take time for everyone to agree with it? Or was it unanimous, “Twisted Metal, yeah thats the perfect name”

  • Jaffe :D are you going to announce the 10 lucky people who get the honor of having those figures, and signed by the team?

    I can’t wait to see :D!!!

  • Hello David Jaffe,

First of all I want to thank you for being the great developer that you are, and for miraculously being able to think and make an insane car combat game with these amazing ridiculous characters to boost!

My fav in the series is Def. TM2 it has the best soundtrack/levels/gameplay.

I’m an Arab fan from this country you probably never heard of called “Bahrain”. I made this class assignment I wrote in College that got me a very good grade! The teacher asked us to write about any story that happened and he wanted us to give a proper title name to the story. I wrote about a car accident that happened to someone I know.. and I decided to call it “Twisted Metal”. The next day he says I wrote the best story and told the whole class that I called my story that name! I was so proud and happy! I thanked you for creating the awesome series and scoring me some good marks in college!

Thanks for listening to your fans Jaffe.. I’m one of the guys who wrote on your channel begging you to make another TM for ps3.

P.S. I’d love to have that sweet tooth figure. I know I said I’m from Bahrain, I have a US address you can ship it to ^^

  • Ok I got a GREAT question for you, a very serious one too, Looks like you threw away the old story… why? (Also a Concern In Single Player Features, I Can’t Beat a 6 Houred Game A million Times but can beat the old way twisted metal used to be a million times, read at that Read my comment after this one)

as for the story, twisted metal being all a dream in Marcus Kane’s Head? (drives roadkill, Minion, DarkTooth, and Towertooth) also it looks like in a way that there are 2 different twisted metal worlds

One of them is Twisted metal 1,2,and head on

And the other world is Twisted Metal Black and Harbor City

Another thing i noticed in the story is that the Calypso from 1,2, and head on… sent black (manslaughter and also appeared in twisted metal 1 as darksides pet) to the twisted metal black and harbor city world to kill the calypso in that world…

Are All of these things gonna just be thrown away? I understand less characters for seperate awesome endings but how can you throw away a whole story o.O?

  • Finally About excluding the original arcade like Story mode and obviously Challenge mode >.> Can there at least be a level Selection??? Or ATLEAST add Challenge mode back… Cause thats how i used to practice and No i have never found twisted metal repetitive like you guys think… Also Challenge mode and level selection is awesome for coop play offline and online >.>

I’m Sorry if this comment is Very late but Please Consider what i’m saying About level selection and challenge mode for the alpha

  • I have played twisted metal scince i was 7, it is my favourite game of all time by far. This game is way out of the box in so many ways, id play this game for hours on end as a kid. My favourite charecter in twisted metal is sweettooth, whats cooler than a killer clown driving an icecream truck?

I found campaign very boring until I found twisted metal, I LOVE the campaign and the great storylines behind the charecters. I played COD campaign for 20 minutes and was bored. I played twisted metal campaign for hours on end without even thinking of stopping.

Next the online is amazing, i adore the idea of the flaming chainsaw and the helecopter, and the COOLEST thing in my opinion is the sniper, i loved watching gameplay of it, when you lean out of your car window and shoot the driver in the face, that was and amazing addition to the game. TM by far has better online than cod, halo,GOW or any other big online game you can think of.

To all xbox fans who are thinking of switching to a ps3, DO IT its much better, again this game is open, so many options, its extremely creative unlike the simplistic and boring COD series.

I am DEFINITELY looking forward to this amazing release and selling my xbox :)

  • hey david can you please try to make a demo of TM ps3 put it on the playstation store so people can download it and get a feel to what the game is like. Then more people can tell their friends and the fanbase will increase and skyrocket to new levels.I cant wait for TM BYE!

  • The first game i ever played and baught on the PS was TM2. Easily i became a fan with all the crazy characters and the fact that the game was not easy. just the concept behind TM, if you win you get ANYTHING your heart desires was enough to make you want to beat the game with the characters to find out “what does this crazy clown want?” but also its like a WishMaster moment when you ask for what you want and Calipso turns it on you, i liked that especially, i thought it was way overused in Head On though, some people should get what they want.

The cars were like an extention of the character, im wondering how the car-to-character is going to work out. I’ll be honest when i saw TM at E3 and saw Sweet Tooth on the Reaper’s motorcycle i was like “what the [DELETED] is Sweet Tooth doing on his bike, wait who’s in the ice-cream truck then?”. i cant wait to play TM PS3 because of that reason. i felt that the character being stuck to 1 car made the game harder, like Grim being on the bike, most powerful special in the game, worst defence. so it was an obsticle that you had to stratagise.

i have been a TM fan since the first time i put a paddle in my hand, i own every Twisted Metal and cant wait for TM:PS3
