Tomb Raider Trilogy

Happy New Year everyone! Last month we revealed the new Tomb Raider in the December issue of Game Informer. Personally I’m thrilled about the new direction Crystal Dynamics is taking Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider franchise overall. There is so much great stuff planned, I CANNOT wait until we can divulge more info.

Tomb Raider Trilogy

If all this talk about Tomb Raider is making you nostalgic for the previous titles, I have great news ─ you’ll get to revisit three of them in The Tomb Raider Trilogy. Included are remastered HD versions of Anniversary and Legend as well as the final chapter in the trilogy Underworld. In addition, The Tomb Raider Trilogy includes an exclusive static theme pack, Lara Croft and Viking Thrall avatars for PlayStation Home as well as trailers that go behind the scenes of all three titles.

When can you get your hands on this awesomeness? The Tomb Raider Trilogy will be available March 22 for $39.99.

I hope this comes with that DLC that never came out on PS3 for Underworld.

How is the Home content rewarded? A code insert? What about adding an exclusive avatar to the bonus content?

Exclusive old games, AWESOME! NOT!!! Am I the only one that doesn’t really care for these old PS2 titles that I’ve played years ago?

The box art could definitely use some sprucing up. Seems kind of like a cop out. And how are Legend and Anniversary editions “Remastered In High Definition”? They were already released in high definition on PC and 360. I appreciate compilations, but would love to see more work put into them, rather than just dumping a bunch of existing stuff onto a disc and calling it a day.

Will Anniversary have the extra costumes from the PSP version and the extra room in the mansion from the Wii version? I know it’s a very small thing, but I’m still curious.

I’m gonna buy this for Anniversary and Anniversary alone, because its the only damn TR game that’s been worth anyone’s time in the past decade >:(

Who thought shooting humans with a non-shooter friendly design would be fun. And why ruin the brilliant adrenaline system in TRA when making TRU? I don’t get that design decision.

Will Underworld HD include the content which was cut from the original and repackaged as exclusive xb360 DLC?

They pretty much confirmed no now for the DLC of Underworld.

Having a solid blu-ray release is fantastic! I’m not a fan of PSN only releases. I’d still like to see the two KINGDOM HEARTS games the most as an HD re-release!!!

Happy Friday everyone!

Thank you again so much for your questions and comments. I gathered the FAQs and caught up with Karl Stewart (Global Brand Director) over at Crystal Dynamics today to get the answers straight from the source. Hopefully we’ve managed to cover off on the key questions. If not, Karl will on here later to follow up too J

(This will be in parts as there’s limit on characters)

Q. Will this be a retail game on one Blu-Ray disc?
Q is it a box set or all game in 1 disc ?
A. Yes, this will be a retail only release and were are delighted to be able to fit all three games, and additional content, onto one PlayStation3 Blu-Ray disk.

Q. Will there be Trophy Support? If so, what games?
A. All three games will have trophy support. Trophy support was previously available on the Underworld release. We’ve spent a lot of time working to ensure that both Legend and Anniversary supported this awesome PlayStation3 feature.

    Q. Will Underworld include the previously 360 exclusive DLC?
    A. Unfortunately we will not be including the previously released Xbox 360 DLC. This content was created exclusively for the Xbox 360 during the release of Tomb Raider Underworld.

    Q. Please update us about the graphics. To compare to the X360 version, it is similar, or better, worse, etc.?
    A. The X360 versions of the game all looked graphically superb. The benefit of taking the time to go back and re-master and re-work all of the textures from the previous versions of Legend and Anniversary is that the technology has improved since the games were originally released. We can honestly say that visually these will be the best versions of the game.

Q. Dynamic themes?
A. We have chosen to create an exclusive Static Theme for this trilogy.

Q. Avatars?
A. We have created two exclusive Home Avatar outfits for the Trilogy. The first (the female outfit) is Lara Crofts key outfit from Underworld and the second (the make outfit) is the Viking Thrall outfit from Underworld.

Q. How is the Home content rewarded? A code insert? What about adding an exclusive avatar to the bonus content?
A. When you insert the disk into your PS3 and start up Home, you will see a notification that you have been assigned the outfit for you avatar

Q. Weren’t these already in HD on the 360?
A. Yes, all three games have previously been released on the Xbox 360 in HD. This version is a vast visual improvement on anything we’ve released previously due to the opportunity to go back in and remaster each texture from Legend and Anniversary with modern tools.

Q. Will it be download on PSN like Prince of Persia’s trilogy?
A. At this time we have no plans to release the Trilogy on PSN.

Q. Is Legend based on the 360 version of the game?
Q. The 360 version has episodic contents for Anniversary, will the PS3 version have those episodic content from the 360 version?
Q. Will legend and anniversary be the same as the 360/PC versions? or will it be the PS2 versions just rendered in HD?
Q. Are Legend and Anniversary going to be remasters of the PS2 versions or ports of the X360 versions?
A. All three Tomb Raider games included within the Trilogy pack have been built using the Crystal proprietary engine. In order to remaster the two PS2 titles previously released, we’ve gone back and reworked the hghest available assets from both Legend and Anniversary and this has included reusing some of the HD textures from both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the games.

Dang even more definitive graphics wise! I just hope they give Lara even more of a face lift on the Legend “360″ version look, considering her PS2 counterpart ‘looked’ a heck lot prettier and better, especially on the eyes.

I’m even more psyched to pick this up now! Can’t wait for screens and hopefully, a proper trailer for this release!

Thanks for the update! I forgot to ask if the games would let you use the outfits from the other games on the disc, but from the sound of it the games themselves are exactly the same aside from the textures and resolution, so I guess I already have my answer.

This is disappointing.

- no DLC for Underworld
- they don’t want to port the PC/360 versions; just remastering PS2 versions…MEH
- worthless bonus content
- ???

I have PC versions and they are better ALREADY.

why exclusive and they are on all machines !! I began to hate Tomb Raider since Angel of Darkness, and Underworld is the worst of all!! my question is : did you guys also improve all the flaws of Underworld ? I mean when she’s riding the bike, she dies and the bike is standing still in the middle of the stairs!!

Lara’s animation is terrible, when you have different ennemies and you are trying to aim at them, she moves her arms with light speed, without talking about the graphics which are really not better than a PS2s.
And pleaase work on REAL puzzles in the next TR, not only push buttons in a room or use the grip to break a door, come on guys, TR’s level decreased over time!! I remember being stuck in the 3 TR on PSone for days!!!

Last question: why there is no 360 DLC ?
