PlayStation Around the Web: What We Read

Jeff Rubenstein's Avatar + Posted by Jeff Rubenstein on Jan 09, 2011 // Sr. Social Media Manager

2011 International CES wraps up today, and while it’s not the hugest show for gaming (we’ll have to content ourselves with GDC, PAX East, E3, Comic-Con, Gamescom, PAX Prime, and Tokyo Game Show ^_^), there’s still a metric ton of cool stuff to see. Our colleagues over at Sony Electronics put together a slickly-produced new video series called SGNL, and they’ve got many product videos and interviews from the show floor, which you can find by clicking here.

For the busier readers out there (hey, I’ve got football to watch, too), they also did a quick runthrough of the Sony booth’s highlights, including a segment with some dude from PlayStation. I’ve embedded that below.

More from CES coming up tomorrow.

The PS.Blog weekly reading list (Week January 3, 2011)

I saw the glassless prototypes, and 2 things occurred to me:

    1. The effect is far more subtle than with glasses on.
    2. They’re not going to be in stores and/or affordable for some time.

I, of course, recommend Sony (I’ll be picking up this 55″ XBR I saw at CES sometime this spring), but read the reviews and buy the best quality one that fits your budget.

I’ve got the KDL-46HX800 and it is BEAUTIFUL. I paid $2500 for the TV, I bought it when Sony Style was having a deal. I got a free Blu-Ray player (gave it to my friend because I use my PS3 for everything.) Get it with the bundle if you can afford it.

good luck finding a big screen glassless HD 3D TV, somebody correct me if Im wrong but that doesnt exist yet, further more compatible with the PS3 3D technology.
If you are looking to play PS3 3D games, the best approach would be to have a Sony 3D TV(bravia?) to ensure compatibility and integration.

I wish you guys announced some advancement in the XMB. That or if you’d made Qriocity run while in game. Now that would make the monthly fee worth it.

10

+ Link01 on January 9th, 2011 at 9:13 am said:

@7 they exist as of now, but for a 20″ it costs roughly 2,000 USD

personally, I believe Samsung and Panasonic have the best 3D experience as of now.. but that’s just from a LOT of research.

All the articles that I’ve read this week have been about a certain unannounced Sony Ericsson phone and hackers doing bad things to our favourite console, so thanks for finding some other interesting topics ;)

By the way, is there any chance that rating Blog Share ideas can be added as a Rewards Quest? I was thinking about encouraging people to rate 50 ideas a month or something… it’d be a great way to energise the Share community and to get people looking through the hundreds of old ideas hiding in the pile.

Anton Mikhailov on “Nerds of the Year”!

That’s brilliant, although they should refer to him by either of his official titles, “The Boy Wonder”, or “Genius Richard Marks’ Apprentice”

playing games with a 3D TV is the bomb not only does the game it also look better because its 240 hz.. you also get 3D!

+ Butters360 on January 9th, 2011 at 10:34 am said:

Jeff, which BRAVIA do you prefer between the XBR-LX900 or the newly announced XBR-HX929?

19

+ pitythefool852 on January 9th, 2011 at 10:44 am said:

Actually gaming is probably the only reason for getting a 3DTV right now. There’s not much movie content, but games can really be enhanced by this technology.

Motorstorm is looking great, but my deadline is to get a 3D screen before Uncharted 3… hopefully there’ll be some special offers or discounts in the coming year.

Thanks again for the great reading list, Jeff. This all just reminds me of how broke I’m going to be this year… Killzone, Motorstorm, Socom, LBP2, Uncharted 3… I’ll be getting a new TV and either an Xperia gaming phone or an Xperia Arc (depending on if the gaming phone can play PS Minis and Classics)… and there’s rumours of a PSP2 as well.

My other half will go insane when she realises how much money I’m giving Sony this year!

I don’t even really know why you guys showed up at CES. The presentation was horrible. Nothing of note was really shown. Just looking at the audience reactions you can see that everyone thought it was a disaster.

If anything you guys should have announced the new PS3 hardware. Without it, the entire PS3 infrastructure is compromised. Online games will be hacked and so will trophies. This is making me not want to be a PS3 gamer.

23

+ Kchow23 on January 9th, 2011 at 11:46 am said:

@22 How does that affect you at all? so you don’t want to be a gamer period since every console now has been hacked? and about CES it was people’s expectations that there would be more gaming content when it is all about technology and that is what Sony brought

24

+ Kchow23 on January 9th, 2011 at 11:49 am said:

P.S new hardware wouldn’t fix anything… then what we all have to trade in our PS3s for new ones to keep hackers at bay?

Suggestion for PSN Plus games for the coming months…

Joe Danger
Bionic Commando Rearmed
Braid
Crazy Taxi
Dead Nation
Digger HD
Fat Princess
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
PixelJunk Shooter
Smash Cars
Superstars V8 Racing
Switchball
Wheel of Fortune

I think a lot of Plus users will be happy with these games or give a choice between two or three game to choose from. Also where are the free avatars and DLCs gone???

My girl and I are LOVING “Angry Birds” but it’s the glitchiest PSP title I’ve played since “Unbound Saga” (which has an audio glitch coming off of stand-by). 9 times out of 10, it will lock up a PSP coming out of stand-by, requiring a full emergency reset. Happens constantly on my 2000 and on my girlfriend’s Go!. Love the PSPs standby/sleep function and use it often, but I’ve never had this much freezing trouble with any other title. I know updates to PSP titles are uncommon (and updates to Minis are unheard of) but it’d be nice to pick up and play this title without having to exit to the XMB every time I need to put the console to sleep for a few minutes. Please help!

+ BlindMango on January 9th, 2011 at 1:51 pm said:

You should fix that first link Jeff

34

+ Locke_VI on January 9th, 2011 at 2:47 pm said:

@ #32 Letters2Kay

Updates to Minis are not unheard of: Both Zenonia and Ace Armstrong vs. the Alien Scumbags were updated. The problems with Zenonia were pretty bad before it was fixed, and Ace Armstrong was updated after the devs got feedback from people over on pspminis.com.

So its not completely hopeless.

Only people who can afford two 3D Tv’s will not wait for the Glassesless Sony Tv. But now everyone who doesn’t have a 3D Tv should wait. If you only want one 3D Tv. Waiting/Patience is the key.

Do you agree Jeff? Or do we have to be encouraged to buy two 3D Tv’s? (When most of us don’t have money for that)

I’ll just stay with my 40″ Bravia till the glassesless gets released.
