Official Statement Regarding PS3 Circumvention Devices and Pirated Software

737 0

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment released the following statement:

Notice: Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. Violation of the System Software Licence Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently.

To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.

What this means to you

Circumvention devices and game piracy damage our industry and can potentially injure the online experience for you, our loyal PlayStation customers, via hacks and cheats.

Many PlayStation.Blog readers have asked how we intend to deal with these incidents that they have been reading about in the gaming press, and this is our initial response.

By identifying PlayStation 3 systems that breach our guidelines and terminating their ability to connect to PlayStation Network, we are protecting our business and preserving the honest gameplay experiences that you expect and deserve.

Rest assured, this message does not apply to the overwhelming majority of our users who enjoy the world of entertainment PlayStation 3 has to offer without breaching the guidelines detailed above, and we urge you to continue doing so without fear.

  • Get em Sony!!!!

  • Sony is mad as hell and they’re not gonna take it anymore.

  • Well said. Pirates should be treated like the dirt they represent.

A Somali pirate just got 33 years in prison.

  • Thx.

I support you Sony in this. I don’t want my experiences online to be crappy cause people wanna cheat.

  • good. take em all out!

  • Thank You Sony! Ban these punks!

  • YES!!!

  • The thing i find funny about this, is that it took you this long to just issue the first response about it.

  • Why not give OtherOS back Sony? It’s ok to steal from the consumer, but not the other way around?

  • Thanks for acknowledgeing this officially. Good to know Sony is not just hoping that this goes away.

  • Yep. “unauthorized or pirated software” isn’t just about not getting paid for software, it’s about people modding and hacking that software to support exploits, aimbots, etc.., all the things that make online play maddening and unsatisfying.

As community members, who want fun and fair experiences with our online games, supporting Sony on this is pretty much a mandatory.

  • The only people who are affected by users, are the ones who legitimately buy your products.

Don’t harm your loyal consumers with useless firmware updates, and removing features. If people want to get around that, they will, it’s the loyal user that ends up with nothing. I’ve bought over 50 PS3 games, over 30 PSN games, and countless PSN DLC…but if you treat me like a criminal, I may feel inclined to become one.

  • Sad thing is, this will never go away. I’m hoping Hotz gets nailed to the wall.

  • I have been a PlayStation Fan/Buyer for over 12 years and i have ‘never’ bought pirated software for the PS1 + PS2 + PS3 and ‘never’ will. I am on your side SONY all the way;)

  • Amen! Kick some ass!

  • While you’re at it fix the grief report function, it’s always freezing my PS3 and allow people to report people without having a message from them.

  • Some people spend too much time trying to get free stuff. If they would take all that effort and get a good job they wouldn’t have to pirate

  • Good thing, I’m proud to use my money to support the industry for people who have been working hard.

  • I 100% endorse this article… I don’t to wake up in a world where the Videogame industry is crippled like the music industry is because of piracy…

No matter how one looks or justifies it, it’s THEFT!! Happy Gaming everyone!! I got to level 12 for my trophies collection =)

  • Glad to hear! Take em down Sony!

  • please, let the bannings begin today

  • oh btw the software update i just downloaded is it for that?

  • Good job, get ’em Sony

  • Dear SONY, your futile cat and mouse game with PSP hackers came only at the cost of your legitimate users being bombarded with a barrage of forced updates.

Please do not let such ultimately fruitless practices be repeated on the PS3, the hackers will spend all of a single day to break the new firmware and your legit users will be forced through another pointless, long and obnoxious update procedure.

  • DEATH TO HACKERS!!!!

  • There is a fast way you can negate the need for a lot of these devices and workarounds: remove region locking.

I do not play pirated software on any game systems I own. I have used some of these hacks and workarounds – on many systems, not just Sony’s – to play imported software.

Region locking is the most infuriating, old media idea around and it needs to stop.

  • Woohoo!! Dwn w/ haxxors

  • Yay!…finally a statement.

  • lol

    that is all.

  • Sony should give us more functions to our consoles, like install a game on HDD like the other console does, simply place the disc on tray and run it from hdd, making loading times decrease significantly… I would like to use this resource, the oficial one of course….

  • geohot with his dumb childish rap video just makes him look like more like a [DELETED]. Hope Sony takes him out

  • Hopefully you’ll be able to brick their consoles too. Get em :D

  • Wow!!! Thought the ps3 was a hack free system. This sucks!!!

  • FaustsHausUK, the PS3 is a region free console for games. You can buy Japanese, European, or US games and play them on your system with no issue.

  • kick some butt sony

  • Nice! I don’t want cheaters in my games. Ban em’ and slam them!

  • The homebrew argument is lame since the psp community produced few if any apps of note. The ability to cheat alone makes supporting jailbreaking efforts as a bad deal.

  • Ban the pirates and disable all their online capabilities! Quality games can only continue to be produced if the developers can make money and feed their kids.

  • @25 uhmmm… isnt the PS3 open region?

  • sony should remote kill hacked systems

  • Funny how they say that piracy damages the industry, but that isn’t the reason for the hacks. Sony: they hacked it because you are doing NOTHING to improve PS3 functionality.

  • GO Get them!!!

  • Nice, well done Sony. Definitely a step in the right direction, keep it up! Bring down that ban hammer!

  • YEAH DO IT SONY

    BRING IT HARD

  • Yeah go get them. I own my PS3 and my games. I should be able to do anything I want to the products I own.

Its my PS3 and I want to hack it now!

  • WooF! WooF!, sick ’em Sony.

  • Bout time, now can we have a decent browser please? And a fix to 3.56 because my friend’s ps3 BR Drive stopped after doing the update and it corrupted his 250gig harddrive that came with his ps3.

  • DON’T LET THEM RUIN THE EXPERIENCE SONY. PLEASE MAKE THEM PAY FOR THEY’VE DONE. I HATE TROPHY CRACKERS WHO RUIN THE CHALLENGING EXPERIENCES AND GAME CRACKERS WHO RUIN GOOD GAMES.

  • I hate pirating PS3 games, PSP games, and PS1 games, but being the owner of a PSP slim, it would be nice if there was a way to play Playstation 2 games on a Slim, even if it meant buying an Emotion Engine on a USB device for a larger cost than a PS2 system. Probably going to have to shell out 400-600 bucks on a 60GB fat PS3 in the near future.

Hell, it would be nice if Sony would manufacture the emotion engine on a new PS3 and charged someone 400 bucks for it. I personally will not buy a PS2 slim, I’d rather be able to play everything on one system.

As far as a hard stance on piracy, didn’t the original hackers get thrown in jail?
