SEGA Genesis Collection Coming Exclusively to PlayStation Plus Subscribers for FREE!

Grace Chen's Avatar + Posted by Grace Chen on Feb 16, 2011 // Sr. Director, PlayStation Store

Hi everyone –

Gaming has come a long way since it became popular with the release of the Atari 2600. As the industry continued to build steam over the years that followed, we saw some iconic classics emerge. One publisher, SEGA, has definitely had its fair share of games that brought mass appeal in the early stages of gaming.

SEGA Genesis

Whether it was our favorite blue hedgehog or playing couch co-op as two centurions tried to free Zeus’ daughter, SEGA created some of the most defining titles in video game history. Now, the SEGA Genesis Collection is coming to PlayStation Store. Starting March 29, SEGA will be rolling out the SEGA Genesis Collection, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Altered Beast, and more. All six of these titles will be playable on the PlayStation 3 and will include trophies. As a special gift and exclusive offer for our PlayStation Plus subscribers, the upcoming games (an almost $30 value) will be available two weeks early and free for one month each to download. To kick off the event, Sonic the Hedgehog will be available a full four weeks early on March 1 to PlayStation Plus subscribers!

Although I’ve already beaten these on Sonics Ultimate Genesis Collection, I’ll be picking these up since I’m getting them free.

“Free for one month” – is this the usual deal of “as long as you subscribe” they are available? Or after a month will these become inactive?

Thank you Grace, thank you. I still wonder how people say PlayStation Plus is not worth it, when we just got $30 worth of games!

I’m a PS+ member since day one, but I’ll gladly pay quadruple the price for Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker. Here’s hoping we get it somewhere down the line.

+ GoldenGotGame on February 16th, 2011 at 8:13 am said:

Actually, an HD remake would be even better! (Moonwalker)

+ Xer0Signal on February 16th, 2011 at 8:15 am said:

this is so, so awesome.

can you please clarify about what happens after the first month for us PS+ subscribers?

like, if we download it during the free month, does it expire at the end of that month? i think it’s a bit confusing in the post.

thank you!

How I love co-op games! Not to complain but I am getting to many free games (lol) I can’t beat the first before I get another one! I LOVE IT! I guess I need to stop buying games from PSN. Still have not even beat the first episode of Sam & Max yet. I knew PS Plus was worth it! Very happy day 1 PS+ subcriber!

P.S. has anyone actually counted the total value of all the games PS+ has got for free so far (not counting all the free themes, Qore and discounts that have already payed the whole thing off so far)?

24

+ KidCommando on February 16th, 2011 at 8:23 am said:

Very cool!, too bad I already own the Collection disk. :( bummer.

Are these games in addition to the regular Plus updates

OR

Are these our free games for the coming months?

26

+ markburleson85 on February 16th, 2011 at 8:28 am said:

Sweet. PS+ has totally paid for itself. At least another $30 added onto the $396.60 free thus far and another $323.86 in discounts. Not to shabby for a $50 investment that still has another 6 months to go in the initial subscription. Note: numbers are based upon a day 1 PS+ subscription.

+ adolson on February 16th, 2011 at 8:28 am said:

Awesome! What about TurboGrafx-16 games? Will we still be getting those in North America even though Hudson Entertainment is gone? I sure hope so – PS3 needs more of the old classics like these.

So these are the same games from the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection you released in 2009, which I already own, and you get a lot more games on that actual disc. Since it’s release people who own the collection have been asking for online co-op, for games like Golden Axe and Streets of Rage, yet they went ignored.

Now reading this news I saw regular co-op, which is fine. But still no online co-op. What is the point of this, since you can get the Ultimate Collection hard disc for like 16 bucks now, which offers many more games?

5 bucks for 6 games with no improvements the community asked for since 2009, compared to 16 bucks for 49 games. You get more for your money buying the Collection hard disc. And it is a great collection.

When assessing the value of PlayStation Plus (the value to yourself on a personal level), you can’t simply add up the price of all the freebies and then declare PlayStation Plus to be worth X dollars.

For an accurate assessment, you should only count the products you would have actually purchased if they weren’t free…or the difference between the discounted price and the regular price on items that you would have actually purchased at full retail price.

For myself, I wouldn’t pay a dime for any of these old games. I’ve bought a few PS1 classics…and they’ve just left me disappointed.

Of course, everyone will compute a different final value. And for some, Plus is a great investment.

haha this is awesome. Thanks so much . I will only need a month or less the beat them all so you can have them back after a month if you want. I’m pretty sure that’s what this means.

Hello Grace, I have a few questions:

1) Are these individual releases with their own trophies?

2) Will there be trophies that weren’t on the disk version?

3) Are there any plans for Shining Forces, Phantasy Stars, and/or Fatal Labyrinth to be released as part of this promotion?

I already own the disk version, but will be excited if there are separate/different challenges to meet for these releases. Please respond.

£5 that’s 30 quid is a bit too much for each game when the whole disc is available on eBay for less then £20 . Came on Sony the least you could do is decrease them by half to £2.50
