inFAMOUS 2: User-Created Missions Give Infinite Possibilities, Limited Beta in April

Here at Sucker Punch, we’ve spent the last couple of years hard at work on inFAMOUS 2. Over the last nine months or so, we’ve talked about a lot of things that make I2 awesome—things like crazy new powers for Cole, super-powered sidekicks, radically improved graphics and special effects, a cool new karma system with branching story lines and multiple endings—but we’ve managed to keep one major feature completely secret.

Until today.

Sandbox games like inFAMOUS 2 are a ton of fun. There’s a whole city to explore, and we provide lots of stuff to do in the city… but no matter how many missions and mini-missions and systemic opportunities and branching story lines we add to the game, eventually the story ends.

We thought inFAMOUS 2 would be better if it didn’t end—if you never ran out of missions and mini-missions to play and things to do. So… we spent the last two years adding a User-Generated Content feature to the game. With User-Generated Content, inFAMOUS 2 players can build new missions, then share them with the world. I think you’ll all quickly discover that while building missions is a lot of fun, seeing people play and enjoy those missions is even better!

There really aren’t a lot of limits to the sorts of missions you can build. Sure, you can build the sort of missions that will ship on the inFAMOUS 2 disk. Mission creators have access to the same set of characters, creatures and props—so if you want to set a pack of Hive Lords rumbling after Cole through the streets of New Marais, you can do it. If you want to have Cole and Zeke face off against Nix and Kuo, you can do it.

If you want to bend the rules of inFAMOUS 2 to create new kinds of missions, you can do that too. Wish I2 had pure stealth missions? No problem, you can create stealth missions. Looking for more of a challenge? Try taking away some of Cole’s powers—see how the player does facing a platoon of Militia wielding only his Amp. Or add an old-school platforming challenge, or a race, or… I could go on all day.

It’s pretty easy to do missions that are more like mini-games, too. Skeet shooting? No problem. Disc golf? Assuming you’re happy tossing around cars instead of Frisbees, sure. How about a mission where Zeke just tells you bad jokes until you shoot him? Um, yeah, you can do that, too.

Building missions is only half the story, of course—we make it super easy to upload your missions to the network, so other players can see your cool new missions.

User-generated missions show up in the world just like regular missions. When you walk up to them, you see the PSN tag of the mission creator, plus extra information like the mission’s current rating. And back at Sucker Punch headquarters, we’ll be watching—missions that get high scores will get promoted to the Sucker Punch Featured Missions list, and those missions will end up just about everyone’s copy of New Marais.

We think this is a neat opportunity for people to become famous for the missions they build. We know there are lots of creative people out there, people who love third-person action games like I2, and have great ideas about what they’d do with the game if they had the chance. Well, now we’re giving you that chance! Let’s see what you can do!

There will be a limited public beta of inFAMOUS 2 UGC starting in early April. We’ll be announcing how to sign up for the beta on March 14… watch infamousthegame.com for more details! And be sure to watch the video above to whet your appetite…

  • This is gonna be the best thing ever! InFamous was an ok game, pretty good, not the best. But im gonna preorder it to get that exclusive stuff.

  • Cant wait!

  • Anyone know when the beta is coming? cause its not here yet?

  • I’m watching out for this too. Anyone got any info??

  • Oh My Freaking God! This is EPIC! I cant believe the opportunities Sucker Punch are giving us. Its like LBP in Infamous 2!!! Im so signing up, have alot of ideas cant wait to share.

  • Plus members get it whoop whoop

  • There is no way that this just happened but it did happen! This is sick! This is great news! Getting a lot of feedback from Beta Testers is going to be excellent and its going to really help the game shine. I really am liking the direction that Sony is going and allowing their developers the freedom to work like this. Its fun for gamers, but if I were running a development studio, I’d love games like these and as a gamer I love these to add longevity to the game. Its all great! The only thing that could make this better, is if InFamous 2 followed suit as with InFamous and the purchase of InFamous 2 would give you a Beta Code to Uncharted 3, and you find out that Uncharted 3 has also joined the Play. Create. Share. But you know what, it sort of already has with its Machinima-like mode in Uncharted 2: Drakes Fortune. Sony is secretly raising up a generation of developers. Their Make.Believe they’re clearly not playin around with.

  • They’re giving you development tools on your console FOR FREE! just as they gave you a Blu-ray Player for Free with the PS3 and we love FREE stuff. I mean really, look at it. You’re given tools to create levels in LittleBIGPlanet 2 as well as now Infamous 2. You’re given tools specifically in Uncharted 2 to create animated cutscenes and in LBP 2 and InFamous 2, you’re creating artificial intelligence. A.I. I LOVE THIS! I love the whole campaign and what Sony is trying to instill in its gamers is to create and have fun! The competition doesn’t push this and if they do, they make you pay for it. With Sony, its like everything else. Its a bonus! Thanks Sony!

  • But, I used to be a huge fan of Capcom. It was Resident Evil and Street Fighter. But Capcom’s lost its edge. Its not what it used to be. Sony clearly knows how to find talent and anyone who gets to work for them is so lucky! All the best things this generation have already or are coming out soon on PlayStation 3. Its a smörgåsbord of games and entertainment unmatched with talent unsurpassed. Capcom, this generation has been set aside. Konami succeeded with Metal Gear Solid 4, and that was it for me. But, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica studios and Sucker Punch have totally blown my mind and Sucker Punch just Sucker Punched me in the face. I’ve been really impressed. They talk of how much they’d like to be like Naughty Dog, which is ok, Naughty Dog is a great example to follow. Naughty Dog are about everyone and including everyone. Not throwing out a bunch of mature content that few can buy and its paying off.

  • But I think Sucker Punch has seen that, taken it and run off and given it their own twist. I can see a Naughty Dog influence, but Sucker Punch can still easily stand on their own and I’ve been really impressed with InFamous. Keep it up guys (Sony First-Party) as well as Sony. I hope I get to rock out to this beta! Phil Harrison did what he could and got the PS3 a good start through a rough time, Jack Tretton has taken that and built on it in his own way and has really expanded the PS3’s possibilities and opened it up to really show its potential. I’m totally proud to be a PlayStation 3 owner and encourage others to pick it up every day. I’m not just saying that. Rock hard Sony!

  • Is the beta competition open to Abu Dhabi residents, if so, how do I sign up??
I already registered on the infamousthegame.com site but it said it was open only to US residents, but on the Sucker Punch Site it said that PAL users had to sign up a different way.
Please fill me in thank you.
    :D

  • Can’t wait!

  • they should put add-ons for Killzone 3 cuz the end continues i dont know like add more mission extra

  • to kill the boss

  • killzone 3 must be more chalenge then killzone 2 im already at 81% in KZ3

  • hey all you guys at suckerpunch. maybe a little dlc for the earlier, cooler, hair Cole? i know people complained about it but some of us still like the new look instead of the bald hobo looking Cole. just a minor request. thanks.
