Resistance 3 Multiplayer Revealed, Beta Later This Year

Greetings from the PlayStation.Blog.Lounge here at the fabulous W Hotel, across the street from the Game Developers Conference in downtown San Francisco. As this post goes live, we are revealing our all-new multiplayer for Resistance 3. We’ve said all along we wanted Resistance 3’s MP mode to bring the best of both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2’s MP and co-op modes, and you’re about to see just how we’ve managed to do that.

Resistance 3: Fort Lamy Action Arena Battle

Resistance 3 will feature 16-player Human vs. Chimera deathmatch and objective-based modes set in locations across the globe. That may seem somewhat jarring after the 40 and 60-player mayhem in RFOM and R2. Rest assured though, our biggest motivation in determining our new player count was the fun times that we and the community had on maps like RFOM’s Busyard and Rooftops, as well as the Bayou House and San Francisco maps in Resistance 2.

Resistance 3 will offer a very deep and customizable progression system. Players can create their own progression paths through multiplayer, spending their hard-earned points to customize loadouts that fit their unique playstyle. We learned a lot from Resistance 2 co-op in terms of giving players the ability to create specific roles in a team and level up different abilities – which you will see with the various active tactical and support abilities, as well as the new personal and combat attributes.

Resistance 3: Fort Lamy Action Doppelganger

Resistance 3: Fort Lamy Prison Messhall Resistance 3: Action Cell Battle

For instance – each player can choose and level different support abilities – such as a Bubble Shield, Ammo Beacon (give ammo to teammates) or Radar Beacon (enhance your team’s radar). There are also tactical abilities you can use against your enemies, such as the Doppelganger (projects an image of you nearby to distract enemies) or Dash (an explosive burst of speed to evade enemy attacks).

Furthermore, each player can select and level a personal attribute and a combat attribute. These range from the ability to have leapers bust out from your corpse, to start with more weapons in your arsenal, to reloading or firing at a faster rate. You will be able to truly customize your character loadout to fit your own unique playstyle in Resistance 3.

We’ve been working on this new direction for close to two years now, polishing and refining our maps. We’re having a ton of fun playing Resistance 3 in the office every day. We will be bringing a multiplayer beta to PSN later this year, so stay tuned to our newsletters (Check today’s for the first news on Insomniac’s Community Day on March 29th!), Full Moon Show podcast, Twitter feed and Facebook page for all the latest updates!

  • Guys please make the MP as deep as lets say Black Ops. I really love shooters that are very customizable. Also please release the game before October. Would love to play it in September. I hope it doesn’t get pushed back. Like next year.

  • If kill 10 player without dead, i can call the helicopter????? or if kill 12 player i can release the dogs?

  • 16 players….thats a big drop from 60. I enjoy the 60 players mayhem!

Anyway, just give me a solid coop like R2.

  • Beta?! I hope it will be a free beta for everyone not just Plus subscribes.

  • * 8 vs 8 – very good, no chaos in match (R2), little maps, intensive games!
    * DMG weapons perfect. No f**king n00bs like CoD: BO or KZ3, no campers, only SKILL!
    * no vehicles, good move!

Question, matchmaking and custom games available?

You guys will be getting my money on September!

    RESISTANCE 3 = SKILL GAME!

  • Those screens look bad-ass.

  • Can’t wait … this is going to be EPIC!

  • I understand toning down from the massive amount of players that R2 supported, but with games like Battlefield 3 coming later this year, you might have been better off going with at least 32 players.

Hopefully with the response your getting here on the blog and inevitably through the beta, you may up the players.

  • Thats cool, looking forward for more infos.

  • How will this game differ from killzone 3? The thing that made resistance was that it was an arena-shooter, but now you are going for a more tactical shooter like killzone 3. Why going in this direction when theres already a game like it.

  • Resistance not Killzone is the flagship shooter on PS3 IMO.

  • I take back my comment about this being killzone.

I saw a multiplayer interview that really changed my mind about the multiplayer. I mean it feels like an old-school arena shooter that you would have a lot of fun with friends. (I really hope that you can have custom matches with friends)

  • I just wanna say I love Sony I buy Sony and i’ll be down w Sony until the wheels fall off.

  • @151, LMAo, as deep as black ops?amazes me hoe brainwahsed people are by COD, COD is ther LEAST deep game on the market, its a casual shooter that takes ni skill, thus its casual appeal and popularity.

Lots of perks do not equal deep.

  • Resistance just like Killzone and Battlefield are straight up beasts.

I’m glad this time Insomniac is trying to push the PS3 tech further then before.

Resistance: Fall of Man = The Beginning.

    Resistance 2 = The Comeback.

Resistance 3 = The Ownage begins.

[DELETED] it how am I gonna balance my online time this year it’s insane.

    ex.)
    -Uncharted 3

-Killzone 3 (Still need to it next pay check.)

    -Battlefield 3

    -Twisted Metal

    -Resistance 3 (Damn.)

    The chaos never ends.

    :P

  • Please tell me you are joking about this 8×8 in multiplayer. If this is not a joke, then this got to be the dumbest move i have ever seen a dev do. How is 8×8 bring out the best of RFOM and R2.
16×16 should be the best count for MP for this game after 20×20 for RFOM and 30×30 for R2.
Please think about this Insomniac, you cannot go the COD way as 8×8 work for that game.
16×16 would be the ideal number for R3.
I made the mistake and purchase R2 thinking it was going to be as good as RFOM and was very disappointed and only play it for less than 8 hours, i certainly will not make this mistake again knowing now that MP is only going to have 8×8 players.
Thanks for disappointing me and alearting me even before i made the purchase. I cannot believe this!

  • “In the end there will only be chaos.” –Kratos

    >:)

  • So many pessimists here…… so sad.

  • Resistance got to get back at their formula , i want to play Resistance Fall of Man improved not another game , if i want to play 8 vrs 8 then i’d buy call of duty or any other game , if you guys are indeed releasing the game with just 8 vrs 8 then give us the option to create new maps with more players 12 vrs 12 , 16 vrs 16 or even 20 vrs 20 since most of sony games now have adopted Little Big Planet mantra ( Play , Create , Share ) , cant wait to play the story even though Hale is Dead and i didnt like Capelli that much in R2 , i think R3 single player campaign is gonna be EPIC !!!!

  • Maybe being able to pitch grenades like a baseball (like RFoM) could be one of the skillsets? Loved pitching a grenade to hit a far off opponent then hearing “Ding” target bomber.

  • Hey guys,

Please don’t let these Nay-sayers bug you. Resistance FOM is probably my favorite game on the PS3. I find myself going back to it again and again, and I think it’s the only game of it’s length that I’ve played more than once on the PS3.

Like many, I did find some of the changes made to R2 dissappointing, but also encouraging. It was nice to see a series shift from what had been established and try to take the franchise in a different direction. Some things didn’t work so well, but I’d rather have that than have the same game released over and over.

R3 may make me break my long tradition of waiting until a game is a greatest hit before I purchase it. We’ll see.

  • Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie

I’ve got the R2 platinum so I’m already invited into the beta, right?

    RIGHT?

  • Hopefully, there will be non respawn games!

  • Looks good but you lost me at health packs.

  • @174? HUH? regenerating health is the worst game mechanic that ever happened to the FPS genre. Health packs or some otehr heal mechanic is ten times better. RFOM was great and it had health packs.

  • Co-op campaign?

I was disappointed you guys removed it in the 2nd and it ultimately resulted in me never committing to buying the game.

  • God I loved R:FoM. I played R2 for a bit, but it wasn’t the same. I can’t wait for this.

  • The Resistance series is awesome! This series has a great story and single player is exceptionally great, can’t say the same for the multi-player online on Resistance and Resistance 2. It’s fast paced and run-n-gun type of experience. Great story and can’t wait for Resistance 3, hopefully there will be a collector’s edition as good as part 2 was.

  • Should not have killed Hale. Suffer now!!!!

  • No doubt this game will include a bunch of DLC that should have been included on the disc.

  • Bring back coop and 40+ multi-player!
What were you guys thinking making online play worse when Resistance series had the best MP.

  • I cant wait to see all of you guys happy faces turn upside down after getting R3. All the hypes just like R2 = Insomniac doomed failure in R3.

  • Looks and Sounds great!

  • Just one more thing…Move support for R3, ok? SharpShooter the Chimera :)

  • hmmm im sorry did anyone else notice in the videos they were using scopes on their weapons. also to anyone who mentioned this before sorry. im only asking out of curiosity i already love the game to death and will presumably buy it. I was only a few trophies from going platinum on r2. also please no power lock. but back to my earlier statement did anyone notice in the videos the guy was using a scope on his weapon(i presume its the bullseye).

  • This game is going to be the biggest let down of a game for me ever. Even more so than Resistance 2. I hopped on the PS3 wagon day 1 and had rfom. Still my favorite FPS to date even if I don’t always give it the love it deserves. I still party up on it every now and then. Rfom took skill, had great maps, a great party system, great modes, and the list goes on. Oh and it had air vents that actually worked.

Resistance 2 was a game more intended for casuals. It is my biggest let down to date but I still played it and tried to like it as hard as I could. I got platinum trophy and max rank in every mode 2 months after it released. At that point I was done. The weapons were a joke and so were the maps. The winning formula in rfom was scrapped. The game modes left much to be desired. Nathan Hale died in a story that didn’t leave me wanting more. He died along with my hope for this franchise.

  • To me R3 looks like R2 with some more extra unnecessary features. The map in the demo looks pretty good but that is not enough. Yes you brought the weapon wheel back but what good is it if there are no weapon spawns? Can I hip fire and be accurate? Not from the looks of the video. What happened to the great reticules from rfom? The chimera look like humans just skinned as a chimera. Why would you add abilities (Perks)? Nobody I knew liked berserks so lets go add kill streaks and perks to make it more similar to cod.

I have the same feeling I did waiting for R2 to launch. I hope this time I’m wrong but I doubt it. This cod craze is ruining FPS for people that aren’t casual players and/or fans of cod. I will buy this game no matter what just because of my love for Rfom but that doesn’t mean I will like it in any way.

These are my feelings on R3. I doubt many people will read this due to its long length but I had to say how I felt. I hope someone at Insomniac reads this and knows that many people feel the same way I do. Please go back to being innovative rather than following the leader.

  • One of the great elements of R:FOM multi was split-screen. Will this be making a return?

  • I don’t understand your reasoning behind making such small games? Why not make it so you could choose how big a game you wanted to be in, I really enjoy small games but sometimes I want to be in an all out war and I really liked the 60 player games on R2
I will buy it no matter what but I hope I’m not disappointed,
Also sixaxis? You guys don’t use that in any game anymore

  • I’ve enjoyed every single Insomniac games since the first Spyro; this looks to be no exception to that rule! I’m super excited to get my hands on Resistance 3!

  • Seriously Insomaniac, after all the times you said you’d listen to your fans you turned out to be the same mediocre developers that are present in the world today. Your roots were R:FoM, and resistance 3 is going back to the same flop of a game that we call Resistance 2. Honestly, when i bought the first game i was intrigued by the gameplay mechanics and how the game ran with such a high number of players at once. I even bought into the hype of purchasing Resistance 2—but was i ever wrong. The gameplay was atrocious and tried way too hard to imitate other games such as COD. And after seeing many of your interviews on how you would LISTEN to you FANS, unfortunately our cries fell on deaf ears. Please do yourselves a favor, trash this game and go back to the roots of R:FOM, then the answers to the cries of your fans will be answered.

  • 16 players seems a bit… low, doesn’t it? I would expect at least 24 in this day and age. Then again I would also expect online co-op, but KZ3 seems to have missed that memo…

Anyways, I hated the previous Resistance games with a passion since they were ugly, boring, had stupid enemies and the worst shooting mechanic I’ve ever used in a videogame. [DELETED], the only thing I enjoyed was the part in R2 at the end where you were riping people apart with your mind. Also that revolver was great! Everything else sucked though.

Hopefully this one is better. If you only fix one thing, please give the guns some damn recoil! Otherwise I feel like I’m shooting a kid’s toy.

  • I’m a bit disappointed….Resistance was the game that sparked my love for online gaming. Its the reason I stopped playing Madden and all the sports games that I loved in college. 40 was the sweet spot for the original and the maps were very well constructed. Weapon Wheel was great and I’m glad its back.

The second one introduced 8 player Co-op which was something very positive to build on for the future. I’m not sure why this was canned but I can’t help but feel that you are going backwards. Insomniac is one of the pioneers of the PS3…No game besides MAG has even come close to offering the amount of player’s online as either of the first two installments. You should have combined the best ideas from both Resistance games to make a true AAA blockbuster.

I just think you aren’t going in the correct direction with the franchise. How are you differentiating yourself from a Call of Duty or a Battlefield? Yes resistance has aliens and futuristic weapons but Call of duty has perks, 18 player matches and twitch gameplay. BF has 24 player, large well constrcuted maps and fun gametypes. They all launch around the same time so I really hope that there is more to your multiplayer then what is currently being shown.

  • I am so pumped for this nice post thank you insomniac and sony

  • I WANNA PLAY R3 sooo bad!!!… I wanna play in the BETA!!

  • Can’t wait, so excited!!!!

  • Can’t wait to play this game. I like the match sizes going to 16 players, less running around to find people.

  • the fact that resistance FOM had two players campaign was just awesome 1 thing they missed out in resistance 2 it would be lovely if they brought it in r3…

  • COD + Halo + AWESOME SAUCE = Resistance 3!!!!
    hurrah for humanity!!

  • Please, move support!
