Online Storage for Game Saves Coming to PlayStation Plus

433 0

Hey everyone – We’ve got an exciting new feature coming exclusively to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Included in the system software update (v3.60) coming tomorrow to PS3, PlayStation Network’s new online storage for game saves feature gives PlayStation Plus subscribers the capability to back up game save data to the cloud. Online storage for game saves is a great way for PlayStation Plus subscribers to ensure that their data files are secure and also for users who wish to access their files from other PS3 systems.

The new online storage feature allows gamers to store up to 150MB of game save data and a maximum of 1000 data files per PSN account. Users also have the ability to back-up “copy-prohibited save data,” and all previously saved data may be restored once per 24 hour period. When the new feature launches, most PS3 titles will be compatible with online storage for game saves, and moving forward, all new titles will have the capability to offer the storage option.

As I mentioned before, online storage for game saves functionality is included automatically for PlayStation Plus subscribers with system software update (v3.60), which will be available on March 10, 2011, and users can access their stored data on the XMB at any time. Additionally, users who save their files to the cloud can access their data on any PS3, using their PSN sign-in ID.

PlayStation Plus subscribers should turn on the auto-download feature to ensure that the update will begin downloading as soon as it’s available, so you can start backing up your game saves right away. If you aren’t already a PlayStation Plus subscriber, be sure to check out our bi-weekly post highlighting the free games, discounts and exciting exclusives we offer, in addition to the upcoming online storage for game saves feature.

Other minor features will also be added via system software update (v3.60). For more information please visit http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/ once the update is live.

What are you talking about? The PS Network gets taken offline at least twice a year for maintenance and said times rarely have anything to do with firmware updates. All networks need and receive maintenance downtime. You can’t simply run these things 24/7 forever and expect them to be a-ok.

  • Another reason i’m glad to be a PS Plus member. :)

  • So once your subscription expires, all the saves will be rendered useless? This feature is pretty useless and I have Plus. Cross game chat please, voice messages please, more diverse profiles please.

  • @megamixer I’m mostly just venting because i keep waiting 4 a decent fw update thats hooks everybody up! and after a long day i just want to go online and shoot strangers!

  • I don’t understand the need for this, aside from paranoia.

I wrongly misread the hype and thought this meant I would be able to download games like ModNations Racers, I have a backwards compatible ps3 and there’s no way for me to make room for twenty to twenty five gigs of space…which is RIDICULOUS…and I’d spend a lot more if you allowed us to use flashdrives for games.

  • As a Plus member, will this work for my subaccounts as well?

  • BEST FEATURE FOR PLAYSTATION PLUS PERIOD.
    @204 rawstory
You do realize that you can update your PS3 harddrive to 500GB+ right?

  • “Currently, online storage for game saves only supports PS3 games”

This stuff really annoys me. Everyone already knows you’re going to include this functionality on the NGP. Why the games industry continues to control the release of information down to the smallest little detail(like Cloud saves for NGP games is) like they’re state secrets is beyond dumb.

For crying out loud, just say NGP support is coming.

Also, this is awesome if you can program your PS3/NGP to automaticly back up save files online every set period of time(day, week, month, whatever) that way you’re covered if your system craps out on you without even having to think about it.

  • Really nice feature, this was the 9th more voted feature asked on Playstation.Share. I suppose that sometimes we actually get exactly what we wanted, haha. Thank you very much for that!!

PS: Do you know if we’ll have an option (paid or not) to upgrade those little 150mb to something bigger and an option to auto-sync the save files?

    Thanks again! =D

  • finnaly playstation

  • Question, will this be offered to NON PlayStation Plus users too?

  • This is GREAT NEWS. I wish we had this a year ago before my original PS3 died and I lost all my saves. Well, at least that won’t be an issue from here on out! Thank you Sony! Best PS+ feature yet.. now all we need is some Cross Game VOICE Chat and I’ll never leave your side!

  • Thank Gof, finally something ive been waiting for, I was kicking myself for purchasing ps+ as I didnt even get a game I wanted and got lots of crappy themes, finally I can switch my 2 ps3s whenver I want now, as I can save my game on 1 ps3, link the file to the cloud, and then start my game from where I left off on the new ps3. Fantastic idea just like steam

  • If only this feature was available in Dec when my PS3 fat died. Oh well. Thanks! Another point for me to bring up when I tell people why I got a year of PS+

  • playstation plus?….great :P
we now all have to get psplus xD

  • that-acmilan-guy

So I will loose all my data if i loose my subscription to PSN plus?

  • Sweet I love this :D I have been meaning to back up my games cuz I’m running out of room.

  • VERY COOL WAY TO GO SONY…WOOOT

  • Sounds awesome, looks like it’s time to get Plus for the kids too. I also have to echo that 150mb won’t be enough for me with over 60 PSN games and over 30 disk games.

  • Problem solved. Thank you so much!

  • big thanks you from my part… now I don’t have to worry with save data with protection on it. :)

  • I LOVE YOU SONY!!! XD

  • Oh boy! So instead of just removing the copy protected save nonsense so we can copy each and every one of our save files to a USB flash drive, you charge us all $50 a year so we can instead copy our saves to “the cloud”. Or we get to keep going through the nonsense of doing a 2-3 hour back-up (because it would be too easy if we could just specify backing up our saved games; no, we have to back up EVERYTHING), and even that doesn’t actually help us if our current PS3 dies, because copy protected saves aren’t transferred if the back-up is restored to a different PS3.

So our choices here are to get screwed by not be able to protect our copy protected saves at all, or get screwed with lube by paying $50 a year to send those saves to “the cloud.” Oh boy, which screwing would I like? Thanks for NOTHING, Sony.

  • @211: From the article: “We’ve got an exciting new feature coming exclusively to PlayStation Plus subscribers.”

Exclusively means regular PSN members don’t get it. Sony only cares about you if you buy into their special Plus club these days.

  • This is dumb. Make it free.

You want to know why you’re last place right now? Because you treat the customer as the enemy. This sort of functionality should be included, and if it was, you’d have more goodwill from your customers because of this feature, less bad will because your customers wouldn’t have to deal with things like corrupted saves and crashed hard drives, and tech support would cost less because you again would have an easier time dealing with those issues. This is a basic feature for a console which is connected to the internet at all times, and would sell more consoles if you were to include it as a base feature with PSN. Meanwhile, instead, you’re adding all sorts of features to PS+, and taking away one very significant way in which your console’s online service is better than Xbox Live.

    Make it free.

  • What #223 said. You guys need a better way of letting us copy our save games to a USB drive and actually USE them.

  • For those whining about NON PS Plus not getting it…Go spend $50 and get it. I have received WELL over $50 worth of content and its only like half way thru its life cycle! quit spittin up and fork over $50. Or you could go pay $50 with xsux live and be able to go online…woo hoo! I appreciate getting things like this for the money i spent. DONT GIVE IN TO THE BABIES Sony and keep this stuff for us the consumer for spending the money. If you dont want to spend the $$ then dont complain! RANT over….

  • Just so i know does this mean terrible “this data CAN NOT be copied” titles like :force unleashed 2,dragon age 1 and 2,star ocean, fat princess and others will be able to play on more than 1
ps3? I have 2 fats and 1 slim though only 1 fat and 1 slim have
bigger HDD. It would be great if all DLC from map packs to psn games could be stored in the cloud and acessed from any ps3 with the same master id,all my ps3’s have the same master ps + profile.

Now we just need a M.aster C.ontrol P.rofile so we can have Resistance level full customization in EVERY dual analog game, don’t use or need it nothing happens but if you, like me,NEED it to play ANY dual analog game and you use it the games would be codded to have it as part of your game profile so if needed you’d set it up like in Resistance but the game would automatically use it as your “default” setting.

  • i’m pretty saddened that they ask me to pay for something that should be standard on the ps3.oh and shame on the devs that keep the saves locked….

oh well,i guess ppl love to buy “premium content” :0

  • While i fully endorse ps + i’d think sony might say here’s 1GB FREE BUT UPGRADE TO PLUS and something like all your game data even copy protected stuff.

Nothing wrong with a free tier and exclusive pay tier.

Another ex:keep online free but give ps + dedicated servers run by sony whereas free is run by whomever put the game out.

I fully expect ps + and my same psn id for ngp.

  • I am quite disappointed with this feature. The fact that I can’t do a global save/update of ALL my saved games but have to do it game by game, and limited to 150MB, makes it less useful than saving to a USB drive, which is how I currently move my save files from PS3 to PS3. I am OK with downloading on demand, but a global cloud update is essential before I’d bother with this wimpy implementation.

What I really want (and am mystified that it isn’t enabled) is to do automatic nighttime downloading to ALL of my PS3s (all 2 of them!). Picking one is a devil’s dilemma, and I end up spending way too much time downloading required updates when I switch physical locations and hence machines. Can I have THAT feature and give up this “cloud save” nonsense in return!?!?!?!

  • Please reply PlayStation!

So I’ve heard that if you copy game save data via USB drive, it disables the ability to earn trophies (on the other PS3) when you copy that save data to the other PS3.

Will that also happen with Cloud Storage?

*Bought the 1 Month with 3 Bonus Month PS+ Subscription on Release Day*

  • This is honestly one of the best features to date on the Ps3.(If it is done right.) I think 150 mb is PLENTY ENOUGH when you think about it. Nowadays most ps3 users have usb sticks or other form of media to back up save data. All save data on the ps3 system is not copy-prohibited, so only thing you really have to do (if you really have that many save files) is just focus on backing up your copy-protected files to cloud, and use a usb stick with your other files. Be mindful, do not mix-up game data and SAVE data. So far, the biggest save data I’ve seen was superstreet fighter 4 with a whopping 18 mb. But at the same time it is not copy-protected, so I would easily move that to a usb stick. problem solved.

  • 150MB is a start but i expected between 10-20GB FOR PLUS USERS.
Oh well i expect as time goes on the data cap should go up.

I already have 16GB MEM STICKS SO if i’m able to copy protected
data i have more storage on stick but still it’s a nice start though my hope would be for everything from add-on content, psn games to all be in my cloud.

Black ops dlc was nearly 2GB alone so everything i bought from ps store should be available in the clouds. I’M just ahead of my time as it’d be great if i bought something off psn and had immediate access to it no dl required.Someday i’m sure.

  • And who really needs to save the game settings anyway? AGAIN, something else yo do not have to worry about backing up on cloud.

  • I haven’t had my trophy data messed up by coping the game save from ps3-stick-ps3..though i’m not playstation i have had nothing bad from flash stick just remember to sync those trophy data on each system and after you earn more,an auto-sync would be nice running in the background when you get new trophys.

  • @QUINTISON You know that if for some reason you lose GAMES or DLC that you’ve purchased from the PSN Store that you can simply DL them again from your DOWNLOAD HISTORY tab located on your PS3 free of charge right? :)

  • Oh I see what you mean now, disregard previous comment. You mean playing from the cloud, yeh.. maybe someday but for now current bandwith would slow alot of “complex” programs down as compared to local data usage.

  • Streaming games… now theres something to think about :)

  • 2 thumbs up.

  • The rumor is finally true.

Glad to have PS + and all the freebies we’ve gotten so far, but this cloud save feature is just fantastic !

Thanks goes out to Karen Spearrin as well, since I didn’t realize that PS + people could purchase the 1 year and still get the 3 mths free to equal another 15 mths of PS + !

I’ve just signed up to get that additional 3 mths before this offer expires.

  • In Game Music ?

  • Awesome News Sony! This feature will add additional value to the PS Plus program. Way to go. I look forward to Sony being even more competitive!

  • Fell power of Cloud computing… Thank you Sony for supporting this…

  • This service is a great idea and should be available to everyone.

And at the low cost of $.99 for a full back-up/update of preexisting data.

You’re not thinking in the right track, and that’s being competitive against a $10 USB 2GB thumb drive.

  • You can’t backup saves that are locked a to a USB thumb drive.

And you also can’t get everything for free. ^^

  • So let me be clear:
If I buy now PlayStation Plus again (with 6 months remain of the current) – a little math here: 6+15=21 months? O_o (am I correct?!)

  • Yes. Because subscriptions stack as stated by Karen Spearrin in a prev. post ^^

  • FML… WHY they didn’t tell us that before that system they use will add up all subscriptions you have.. do you guys know how many I would actually buy?! IT”S WAY BETTER DEAL THEN XBOX…
