Online Storage for Game Saves Coming to PlayStation Plus

433 0

Hey everyone – We’ve got an exciting new feature coming exclusively to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Included in the system software update (v3.60) coming tomorrow to PS3, PlayStation Network’s new online storage for game saves feature gives PlayStation Plus subscribers the capability to back up game save data to the cloud. Online storage for game saves is a great way for PlayStation Plus subscribers to ensure that their data files are secure and also for users who wish to access their files from other PS3 systems.

The new online storage feature allows gamers to store up to 150MB of game save data and a maximum of 1000 data files per PSN account. Users also have the ability to back-up “copy-prohibited save data,” and all previously saved data may be restored once per 24 hour period. When the new feature launches, most PS3 titles will be compatible with online storage for game saves, and moving forward, all new titles will have the capability to offer the storage option.

As I mentioned before, online storage for game saves functionality is included automatically for PlayStation Plus subscribers with system software update (v3.60), which will be available on March 10, 2011, and users can access their stored data on the XMB at any time. Additionally, users who save their files to the cloud can access their data on any PS3, using their PSN sign-in ID.

PlayStation Plus subscribers should turn on the auto-download feature to ensure that the update will begin downloading as soon as it’s available, so you can start backing up your game saves right away. If you aren’t already a PlayStation Plus subscriber, be sure to check out our bi-weekly post highlighting the free games, discounts and exciting exclusives we offer, in addition to the upcoming online storage for game saves feature.

Other minor features will also be added via system software update (v3.60). For more information please visit http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/ once the update is live.

  • Ugh could have used this yesterday :( just got the wonderful YLOD on my original 60 gig….

  • @248 you can sill buy trough the phone…

  • Yeh, well why didnt you ever make a backup on a external HDD from your orig. 60gb hmm? or maybe you did what do I know :) Sorry to hear bout YLOD ; ;

  • uploads from slim and downloads to fat went very smooth. Going to test out a copy-protected file tomorrow.

  • Two things…

1)I have 1 year subscription to the PS+ so if I buy another year now then that 2nd year will automatically add additional 12 months plus bonus 3 months to my current 12 + bonus 3 months so I’ll have a total of 26 months of PS+ for the price of 12???

    2) Automatic upload to the online cloud for game saves would be nice feature. I and I’m sure others won’t remember to regularly save our game data.

    Thanks and great new feature.

  • @Todd_Bridges
And by babies I assume you mean early adopters who purchased, at full price, nearly every game and DLC handed to newbies… er, Plussers, at a fraction of the cost?

  • @ 252 Shystie1.

Each 12 mths of PS + you purchase now has a 3 mth extended freebie.

I purchased a 2nd year (and got the 3 mths free as well).

You can verify this on your PS3 (on the XMB) if you go to Account Management, then to Transaction Management.

Scroll down to the Services List and locate PlayStationPlus and then click the X button.

It will show you your subscribtion (the time of the 1st purchase and the Expire date).

I purchased my original 1 year plus 3 mths on June 28/2010 and now that I’ve purchased a second 1 year plus 3 mths my Expires date is set to 12/28/2012.

In other words….I got the 2 years and 6 mths for the price of 2 years.

  • @ 252 Shystie1.

You have 12 mths plus 3 additional…making it 15 mths in total.

If you buy another 12 mths plus the 3 mths extra, makes it again 15 mths.

    So…..you’ll have 30 mths…not 26 as you mentioned….15 + 15 = 30.

It will be for the price of 2 years (24 mths) not the 12 mths you mention in your post.

  • So, 150mb isn’t nearly enough to just upload copy-protected saves. Just my Assassin’s Creed 2 Profile was 147 of the 150mb. Go buy another server so we can actually use the service.

  • Does this feature include PSX save files or just PS3 games files?

  • @Talon224 How is your Assassin’s Creed 2 Profile 147mb?! Mines only 2.3mb and I have more than half the trophies, so its not like I havent played it somewhat :)

  • @talon224 whoa that’s not right lol…150mb is pretty decent to start off with…i’ve stored all of my games in the cloud at only 16mb lol

  • great new feature… 150 mb is plenty. now onto crossgame chat, please :)

  • I think he only saved that game save, looked up at space left and saw “147/150” and thought it meant the save was 147. LMAO!!

  • people its not the stuff you installed on your HDD that you are trying to move to the cloud. ITS THE GAME FILES… they should all be kbs not mb

  • correction SAVED GAME FILES*

  • lots of SAVE files are MB not just KB, but definitly not 147mb LOL

  • We need a “Copy Multiple” please..

  • YES! We need “COPY MULTIPLE” and “AUTOMATIC SAVE UPDATING” functions for this service PLEASE!!!! ^_^

  • yeah i agree that a copy multiple is very much appreciated…thx

  • Not quite. Sony, you should have licensed Dropbox-style functionality for saves.

  • @omega_alpha-619 LOL! yeah i think he did lol…he’s a genius =)

  • Great feature, does not need to be on the subscription at all. Should be available for all members just in case something goes wrong with their PS3. Happy with the feature, sad that it’s not for regular members who have a limited budget.

  • I just finished backing up my games. Well, besides Mafia 2. Why is that save 47MB? This new feature was really easy to figure out and the ability to back up protected saves is great.

  • Of course there are already people complaining about this great new feature. Backing up each file is no big deal. Once you get it done the fire time you only do what hasn’t been backed up. Are people getting too lazy?

  • @Karen Spearrin It’s been asked, but not clarified; will the Online Storage folder update the files on one’s PS3 automatically, or will they need to be copied manually individually before the cloud saves them? For example, I copied over 10 files tonight and let’s say I advance later in a game later in the day; will I have to copy over my latest save file in order for the cloud to store it after I’ve played or will it sync once a day the latest version of that file automatically?

  • @NineToez It’s manually at the moment…. hopefully in the near-future it will update the saves daily automatically. :)

  • @BrianC6234 It’s not laziness on my part, I work 12 hours a day, I have no time to copy them individually. I’m sure, I’m not the only one. I’m not complaining, I’m suggesting a better method & one that will benefit the working man.

  • I downloaded the new system software update v3.60. WTF, my Dualshock 3 Sixaxis and Blu-ray remote don’t work unless its connected directly to the console. I did not have any problems before I downloaded this update. Now, I have to wait until Playstation receives five thousands complaints and one week until they think about repairing this update.

  • 150 MB.

    Not enough.

Some saves are 50+mb (I’m not talking about GAME DATA, I’m literally talking SAVES).

So that leaves me with only saving a FEW games to cloud?

    Gee… thanks, I guess.

Google gives me 8 gigs with gmail. FREE.

    This is rubbish.

  • The “online storage” is clearly not intended for PS3s with accounts for every family member.

We purchased a a PSN+ on my PSN account, so I could buy games for the rest of the family to play. But I find my children can’t really use the online storage option.

It looks like the “online storage” save feature is only possible for the active PSN+ account on a system. If we want to copy save games of other user accounts on our PS3 to the cloud, weve got to copy them first to the main PSN+ account before we can back them up online. That’s a *lot* of extra work.

It also doesn’t work for all save games. So my son still can’t backup copy protected games saves despite an expensive PSN+ membership.

  • Did anyone read this before they replied with love? 150mbs is nothing. Honestly for the cost of storage and traffic they’re giving us PENNIES worth of service with stupid limits like 1 download per day.

Go search up website hosting from GoDaddy or any other web service and check out how much storage you can get and how much traffic you’re allowed.

    I feel scammed.

  • Seems like a Japanese company not understanding the internet yet again.

  • And just saying, every one of my Fallout 3 saves is 10mb. And I know the difference between the Save files and the game data that is installed on your hard drive for faster loads.

  • Awesome i had already saved most of my save file to a usb key but i wasn’t able to tranfer some.

At least now i don’t need to be scared of losing save files anymore.

  • Hmmm why limit this to plus subscibers?

Why not allow us none subscribers a way to use cloud too. Maybe $10/yearly to use the service. Also 150mb limit is too low for total of all save files.

Personally i have no interest in plus. the games you offer for “free” just dont interest me, especially since most of the time i already have said game or didnt even want said game.

I have some great ideas for Plus but its not like you guys ever take things people want into account. Hell the fact that we are still waiting for Cross Game Chat, something most people have been asking for since the start of the PS3 5 years ago, shows that you guys dont give a crap what your consumers want.

  • Nice but can you choose which files you want to save? Can you save all files such as for PS1 classics? Also can you backup PS2 and PSP saves? One note though, 150MB is not very big. Some games like Fallout New Vegas I notice saves roughly 6MB per save, and I have to save a ton of times for that. Sadly I may have to opt to buy this unwanted PlayStation Plus because I am on my 3rd PS3 because of hardware failure and I backed up my files but when trying to restore them from external disk I guess too many are copy protected and it doesn’t give me much saves back. Blasted micro transaction hungry, money yanking, for features that should be allowed, no excuse……………!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ok this reply will probably just get lost or ignored but here goes anyway.

I love the option to save games saves to the cloud i have only one complaint/request about it. it should allow for the saving of game saves for sub accounts. For example i have my PSN account which i subscribed to plus with. My 4 children all have their own PSN accounts which are sub accounts of mine and are all used on the same console so why should they not be able to access this feature. I know it could be done by saying something like: any account that is a sub account of a ps plus member and is used on the same console as said ps plus member can copy game saves to said ps plus members online storage area. I’m not saying give each sub account it’s own 150mb space but let them use the same space as the main ps plus member and lets say create a folder for each sub account and only allow them access to that folder.

  • I think this is a good idea, but I still wish something would be done about copy-prohibited save files being able to be backed up on a USB drive. Maybe “coat” the save files in data that makes it possible to be transferred to a USB drive.

  • Im loving this feature but there is a question that has been bothering me. I understand that if you back up game saves on a thumb drive, you are no longer able to earn trophies. Is that the same case here?

  • Thanks for this feature, this is great.

What would be amazing is if we could have something automatic that would save some saves to the cloud and not have to manually do it everytime you finish playing a game.

  • This update sucks. Did not fix the errors from your last update.

You suck sony. Thx for the paperweight

  • @People asking why this isn’t available to everyone: It could be a pilot program, and its success or failure depends on what y’all think about it. Otherwise, it isn’t available to everybody because bandwidth isn’t cheap and most of us aren’t paying.

And why would I? I’ve got my saves backed up on a USB flash drive, which is exactly what this does, except I have a few GB worth of space and you have 150 MB. And I can reload my saves whenever I want. And it only cost me a one-time fee of $10 while this is costing you $50/year. It’s a nice feature, but not terribly useful and certainly not worth signing up for Plus over.

  • @spaque99
I agree with you. Also an option to save all game files at one time instead of doing each one separately.

    @jqtaxpayer
Do you carry your flash drive everywhere you go??
What would you do if you lost your flash drive??

Tired of people complaining about something they don’t have to pay for.It is just something extra for the people who “choose” to pay 50 dollars a year.

  • hi i really need help when i update ps3 network my friends id name they Change their places i sort id names they put Character A in middle and Character B up i don’t understand it
so i need help please ???????????? anyone answer me please ???

  • I just bought the PS+ and uploaded my game saves.

I was waiting on this feature as I own two PS3’s and possibly 3 in the future.

Now it’s time to try these free games…

  • Now we just need an update to be able to change PSNid and keep your data and things you bought in the ps store.

  • @298

I to would like to change my psnid which i created 3 years ago and don’t care for it anymore.

  • Amazing, people expect everything for free, PSn is growing, can’t expect Sony to run everything for free, or thy will go bankrupt. get an xbox where you can’t even play online without paying. We already get more then most for free with PSN.

Running PSn, and cloud saves is getting more expensive by the day, Sony is not a charity for broke/cheap people.
