Online Storage for Game Saves Coming to PlayStation Plus

433 0

Hey everyone – We’ve got an exciting new feature coming exclusively to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Included in the system software update (v3.60) coming tomorrow to PS3, PlayStation Network’s new online storage for game saves feature gives PlayStation Plus subscribers the capability to back up game save data to the cloud. Online storage for game saves is a great way for PlayStation Plus subscribers to ensure that their data files are secure and also for users who wish to access their files from other PS3 systems.

The new online storage feature allows gamers to store up to 150MB of game save data and a maximum of 1000 data files per PSN account. Users also have the ability to back-up “copy-prohibited save data,” and all previously saved data may be restored once per 24 hour period. When the new feature launches, most PS3 titles will be compatible with online storage for game saves, and moving forward, all new titles will have the capability to offer the storage option.

As I mentioned before, online storage for game saves functionality is included automatically for PlayStation Plus subscribers with system software update (v3.60), which will be available on March 10, 2011, and users can access their stored data on the XMB at any time. Additionally, users who save their files to the cloud can access their data on any PS3, using their PSN sign-in ID.

PlayStation Plus subscribers should turn on the auto-download feature to ensure that the update will begin downloading as soon as it’s available, so you can start backing up your game saves right away. If you aren’t already a PlayStation Plus subscriber, be sure to check out our bi-weekly post highlighting the free games, discounts and exciting exclusives we offer, in addition to the upcoming online storage for game saves feature.

Other minor features will also be added via system software update (v3.60). For more information please visit http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/ once the update is live.

  • @ 345 When You Say WE Speak For Yourself. I Don’t Have A Pc & I Love All These Useless Features That You’d Like Dropped. Gaming Is All WE Want? No It’s All You Want. I Do Everything Just About From My PS3. Sony Is Still Doing A Good Job Slowly But surely.

  • As someone else mentioned, my PS3 died with the Yellow Light of Death on Monday. If it had just held out a few more days….

*sigh* Back to rebuilding my PSN game catalog. :-(

  • This is awesome!! Great update!!!

  • The only thing that could make this better is if it had a feature to allow you to copy multiple saves at once. It’s kind of time consuming doing it one-by-one for those of us with more than a handful of game saves :( It would be nice if it allowed you to select which game saves you want to copy (ie. the messaging feature that allows you to send the same message to multiple friends by selecting them from a list). A little more storage space wouldn’t hurt anyone either, hehe ;)

  • totally useless, i rather use my external harddrive

  • This sounds great, and am already using it, But question, how many systems am I allowed to download my data to? You currently allow for only 5 ps3’s to have my account on them does the same rule apply here?

  • Sweet!! I’ve been looking to upgrade my HDD and this opens all possibilities to me. Thanks Sony!

  • THANK YOU, SONY

  • About time Sony

  • This is incredibly great news. I was a very early Plus adopter and was asked by playstation to rate the value of the Plus and I said then, well not so great but I trust Sony to make it great. And the following months have offered more and more awesome features. I thought the upgrade yesterday was only to let me set my contoller auto shut off. LOL.

My 120 gig slim is getting kind of full so this is welcome news. But I’m still going to get another PS3 with the Move package because I love love love my Playstation and PSN.

Hey, Karen, dumb question: can I renew my Plus months early and not lose any remaining months I still have?

  • Can I transfer my saves to this and play off them and save to them while they are in the cloud or is this just for backing up and system transfer?

P.s. signed up first day, first a question does that mean I get the extended 3 months? and second this feature is one of the best yet, more of this SONY, more useful stuff and you will have big time subscribers, my 2 cents PSN + for one get more of us into early betas that will sell it and better discounts on PSN stuff.
might sell more if you let people keep the free games forever too.

  • I’ve got two very good questions that haven’t been answered yet.

    1. Is there ever gonna be a way to automatically sync our game saves with the cloud? It seems odd that I have to make a copy of something each time I play to make sure the game saves are up to date. It would be easy to get lazy about copying the files, which would make it pointless. Even for those of us not too lazy to make sure and copy the files every time, I think it would make more sense to have an option to just save the game files to the cloud automatically instead of the PS3 HDD.

    2. On the PS+ deal, is 3 months the max we can get for free? What I mean by that is, if we pay for two years, will we get six months free, or just the three?

  • sweet Loved my PS+ when it first launched and now I love it even more!

  • Okay, why, with this new update did you change the organization of the Friends List? Now it sorts them in alphabetical order but with upper case letters first and then lower case letters underneath them. Seriously, WHY did you do that?! It’s completely pointless and now it’s more annoying to look through my Friends List! It was fine the way it was before so please change it back because I like to look through my List through one scroll, I don’t want to have to keep scrolling down just because a Friend whose name started with the same letter as another one of my friends has a lower case letter. Next update change it back because it’s so inconvenient and you just wasted money that WE users gave you.

  • Okay I Totally like this. By having 1 YLOD and losing all my stuff,
This is a perfect way for me to save files.
** Question** Can I pre subscribe to + before it runs out. I’m a
    busy guy and forget things.

  • @351, no PC? Yeah you’re the minority and dragging the PS3 down. The fluff gets in the way of the stuff that should be there, and the non-gaming stuff isn’t even done that well. Sony would do well to focus on gaming as they did in the past. This gen hasn’t been so great because of the fluff. Why do you think the DS steamrolled the PSP? Games and no crap.

  • Why do I get this message:
“There are limits to how frequently you can download this saved data from online storage. You can download only after 24 hours have passed since you last uploaded to or downloaded from online storage. You can upload to online storage at any time.”
Also why isn’t there “select all” feature so I can just get this done in a heart beat? Sitting here downloading 1000 files 1 at a time is redickulus?

  • Awesome feature somewhat ruined by the fact that we need to do it all manually.

Please make it all automatic or at least make it where once we upload a game save it will be updated automatically whenever the gamesave changes. (progress in the game and/or close the game) Otherwise this feature will be fairly useless if we don’t update it every time we exit the game.

  • love the fact us PS+ members are getting exclusive features.
i honestly am more excited to know i can stack memberships than the whole cloud thing.

i have a 500gb drive in my PS slim, so save room isnt much of a deal. but if i go to a friends not having to drag a memory stick is nice!

  • im sad because just a week ago my launch 60gb model got the YLOD and all data on it since last 3 or more years has been lost :( this just comes a week later :( awww

  • IMPORTANT What happens to my saves in the cloud when my Plus subscription runs out? Do the saves get deleted, locked down, stored with sony servers, erased, lost, corrupt????

  • Good job sony.

  • Now THIS is what I’m talking about! I’ve got another reason to renew my subscription. Great job, Sony! Keep bringing out features and perks like this!

  • I could of used this a week ago when my PS3 YLOD on me. Thanks for nothing Sony.

  • Too bad it only works with the master account. Why do sub-accounts get left out?

  • This is a great feature! I have already had my ps3 get the ylod and lost all of my game saves. Now I don’t have to worry about that happening again :-)

  • Just to be clear, you cannot USE the game save in the online storage, correct? In other words you cannot load save game data from a game directly from the online storage and then save there as well, is this correct?

So you have to always copy to the ps3 play a game, then copy back up if you want to use the new updated/new save on another ps3?

    Thanks.

  • This update has messed up Killzone 3’s campaign. It causes it to freeze.

  • Nice job Sony!

  • Awesome!!!

  • I love this feature but would like more storage room than 150MB, I’ve been backing up all my copy protected saves only (all the others are on a USB Flash Drive) but a couple of my gave saves are 66MB each so I ran out of room real quick.

  • PLAYSTATION PLUS IS LEGIT SH#T

  • Yes i know and have re dl ed games by simply going back to the store on each ps3 but why would i want need to activate/ dl and install content that should already be on sony’s servers and when we “purchase” it all that would need to be done is activate the content for our accounts and sony would keep the content on their servers leaving our hdd free for music, photo’s,video’s and game installs.

I’m sure that’s where sony will be headed making psn a portal where we only need connect to access our content.

That’s what playing in the clouds will be about, this is only the beginning. Why not allow us to purchase mass effect 2 on the store and play it from their servers…no dl to a hdd required just a purchase from the store and then INSTANT ACCESS.

Of course ps + would be required for that big of an advantage to be viable.

  • Outside of the memory limits i should be able to upload a save and immediately be able to put it on another ps3,no 24 hrs required. Also if i played a game on my 2nd ps3 and got further i should be able to upload the progress and dl right back to my regular 1st ps3 without waiting 24 hrs-i’m sure this is a good start but as a ps + member i was expecting 10-20GB bare minimum and even the ability to save to a flash stick.

Every copy protected game save only shows up as available to the cloud while every normal not locked down game save is ready for either cloud or flash stick,i also hoped i could copy the blocked saves to a flash stick as part of +. Keep improving.

  • This service isn’t perfect yet but it should get better. For the first console version, it does what it’s suppose to with some annoyances. Look to Steam for a proper method of doing things.

  • I was waiting to join Plus for this feature. I usually try to be positive about updates…but wow; this is incredibly poorly implemented. Basically Sony gave us the equivalent of a USB stick that is on the internet. The single difference is that it will back up “protected” game saves (a DRM which isn’t very well loved as it is).

It doesn’t automatically sync updated game saves? That’s just a basic feature that should be there. Manually going to each game save and copying to “the cloud” then going to your other PS3 and manually copying each save back down is so cumbersome that I can’t imagine many will regularly do it. Also, why such a tiny amount of storage space? Cloud storage space is incredibly cheap per GB…and most people have a 1GB or far larger USB sticks just lying around.

If you are wondering how this should work, just look at dropbox.com

    Poorly done Sony :-(

  • love it ..that just shows y ps3 is the best

  • VITAL addition solving one of the greatest faults in the system- an inability to transfer data to a new system. GREAT IDEA- but the implementation is practically useless due to the STUPID IDEA of forcing games to be individually MANUALLY copied to online database thereby COMPLETLY RENDERING THIS UPGRADE ALMOST USELESS! Without auto-sync or control over items to be backed up on some type of automatic schedule (with reasonable mb/file quantity limits understandably) it is USELESS TO ME (I HAVE TOO MANY GAMES to deal with this nonsence!!!). ITS A GREAT IDEA, unfortunatly this utility was released before it was tested in the real world where we play MANY games- not just two or three.

  • Love it! althogh I wonder about time consuming data transfers. What will they suprise us with next?

Check out my youtube channel “wak4863”

  • Very nice Sony. This will help me move game data between both of our PS3’s.

How about adding individual passwords for users on the same system.

My 4 year old plays on everyones account as well as his own. The rest of the family would like to password protect their gamer account while leaving his un-password protected so he can still play but he can’t get into our accounts.

  • Good damm I love Sony, Playstation and being a Plus Subsciber!

Best fifty bucks I’ve ever spent.

I have over two hundred bucks in crappy games. Fifty bucks to be a Plus subscriber has more than made up for my bad game purchases and all the stuff you get is extreamly kewl!
I love the theams, free games, avatars, and now this. Very nice.
I uploaded all my game saves the other day and now I feel better about my ps3 disapering, what ever the reason it may be.
Atleast I have all my game saves, and if I’m ever at a friends house I can can access my games online.

  • I recently just paid for PS+ because of the online storage. Wanted to play my saved data of Assasin’s Creed2 on a different one of the 3 Playstations I have in my home. I would normally just use my usb stick to move data from one machine to the other, but because of nonsensical game save data copy protection that is not an option. So ok buy the online storage for too much money it is for something I could do for free with my USB stick. Then find out i have to wait 24 hours before I can download the data!!!???? WHAT THE F&%k!!!! This is complete BS. why the time block on downloading my content to my own machines. Sony you have been pissing me off a lot lately. This is a complete ripoff. I want my money back and explain to why the hell save data is copuy protected at all? I am eff’n pissed

  • besttttttt thing ever, thanks ps+

  • Love it!!

  • I think free users should get something. At least unlock the stupid saves that you can’t back up properly. Lock them to the PSN account like with these. Then they can still backup everything too. Just with a flashdrive or something.

  • This is great news indeed! Im loving ps+ and i never regretted purchasing the 12 month subscription in July.

What would be cool is to extend ps+ members from 150mb to 500mb and let the Free non plus users get the 150mb.

  • Very nice idea would have saved me a 100 bucks and best buy having my PS3 all day transferring my data to my new 500gb hdd but all good glad im a plus member A+++ ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK

  • So… just tried to bring a save file to a friends. I thought it was a 24 hr download limit after the first download, not a 24 hr download limit after the first upload! Totally useless feature in some respects. I’m going to have to plan 48 hours ahead just to make sure I will have a playable savefile in the cloud. This also means I can’t really play the game I intend to bring over because then my save file will be newer and therefore I’ll need to re-upload the save.

  • As a PSN+ subscriber and a solo gamer this feature is useless to me. Where are we with unlocking music playback for all games. Or a MMORPG that isn’t based on a comic book, where is it? Can we get a PS3 Field Commander? An expanded sports champions with hundreds of activities?
