When Street Fighter Met Tekken

Street Fighter x Tekken

At Captivate last week, Capcom unveiled the first batch of playable characters in Street Fighter X Tekken: Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile and Abel from Street Fighter and Kazuya, Nina Williams, King, Marduk and Bob from Tekken. Afterwords, Producer Yoshinori Ono spoke how Street Fighter X Tekken came to be. In his words…

When we [Capcom] took that 10 year break between releasing Street Fighter games, I feel that Tekken diligently stoked the fighting game campfire and kept people interested. With Street Fighter IV we tossed kerosene on that fire and got fans really excited about fighting games again.

I was having dinner with the Tekken director [Katsuhiro] Harada-san shortly after Street Fighter IV came out and we got talking about how we could keep that campfire burning. We were half-joking when we first conceived this collaboration, but it did seem like a great idea to both of us and pretty soon we were both saying, ‘you go back to your office and I’ll go back to mine… let’s synchronise watches and convince everyone that we should do this’. Long story short, we’ve got our game coming; they have a similar thing going on over there, and we’ll see what happens.

Street Fighter and Tekken have always been different games. Street Fighter is slower paced and a little more deliberate, it’s all about judging the distance between yourself and an opponent and anticipating what they are going to do. It’s not as aggressive as Tekken, which is played at a faster pace, right from the very first punch.

What we’ve tried to do here is merge the two so that you retain some of the more thoughtful approach that you associate with Street Fighter, while also getting a taste of that more ‘in your face’ Tekken style. We think we’ve found a way to get the best of both and we’ll just continue fine-tuning so that the final result is a perfect marriage and a unique game in its own right.

There was some communication early on and, usually with a collaborative project like this, we would be obliged to buy some Tekken reference materials, but I certainly don’t want to give money to a competitor, so I’ll most likely work out some private deal with Harada-san where we borrow that stuff. I’m not going to tell him exactly why we need it though, that would be showing too much of my hand.

But back to the original point, they have no input into our game and we have none into theirs.

Street Fighter x Tekken

There are a lot of Tekken characters that are really difficult to get right in this game, but our selection criteria is to pick the most challenging to bring over because it’s more fun for us and I think it will make the game more compelling in the end. One example is Marduk, who is a pretty surprising inclusion. We have some other powerful grapplers in Street Fighter but nobody that moves the way he does. From E3 onwards we’re going to be revealing many more characters and some of them are going to be truly out of left-field.

You might be thinking there’s no way we can include certain characters but you could be second-guessing yourself further down the line. The Tekken universe has some supremely weird characters, including animals and even inanimate objects, and that might strike you as contrary to the Street Fighter aesthetic, but then we’ve had a character whose limbs can stretch and people shooting fireballs from their hands, so the addition of an animal wouldn’t be so out of place and it could make the game really interesting.

Street Fighter x Tekken

We’re not just throwing a bunch of Tekken characters into Street Fighter and I hope that fans from both sides are going to be attracted to Street Fighter X Tekken.

The ideal ending to this story is to have built a common ground, where the best Street Fighter players and the best Tekken players in the world can duke it out. I’d be really happy with that.

  • Awesome!!! Can’t wait to play this game! (Hopefully, Capcom will release the demo first before the final product comes out!). Thanx for the article!

  • There are going to be two version, this one and one based on the Tekken style. I’ve always been more of a fan of the SF fighting games but I will definitely play both games

  • Thats a cool stage. what is that blue thing in the first pic?

  • To be honest the way capcom have been exploiting street fighter 4 for the last few years is kinda embarrassing, with all these .5 milk- updates and so on.

I still love tekken however, but i’ll be skipping this latest capcom cash-in and will enjoy the totally awesome Mortal Kombat (featuring the PS3 exclusive badass Kratos) instead.

  • @SPOOKUL209 Given the first gameplay preview of this game, I can tell that Capcom really managed to include gameplay of Tekken such as launcher + juggle combos into the SF system. So this would be the best way for you to get familiar with tekken game before getting to TxSF, which will be conveniently released after SFxT.

@jeffsmither: These are the blue gloves of Alex, the raptor boxer from Tekken.

  • Yeah! Now just gimme my fei long/ marshal law team, and im sold! also im pretty corious if Jin is gonna be a playable character, he appeared on this strange suit on the trailer… Now please capcom make this game with a DECENT storyline

  • BAD NEWS ABOUT THIS GAME IS IT COMES OUT IN 2012..BUT I GUESS I CAN KILL PLENTY OF TIME WITH MVSC3 AND THE SOON TO RELEASE TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT 2! CAPCOM IS DOING THERE THANG THIS YEAR..CANT WAIT TO HEAR SOME NEWS ABOUT THAT RESIDENT EVIL:RACCOON CITY – SLANT6 SOCOM WITH ZOMBIES SOUNDS FANTASTIC.I ALSO CANT WAIT FOR NAMCOS VERSION OF RYU AND CHUNLI ..:D

  • Ok I have 3 Questions:

    1) Controls? I hate SF’s controls and how they feel compared to tekken how will a Tekken gamer feel in this cross breed universe?

    2) When can we expect Tekken X Street Fighter details? All we are hearing about is Street Fighter X Tekken.

    3) Will Jin Kazama/Devil Jin be in this game?

Also please smack someone at Namco to get them over here to give us details on Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

    • 1. There are two control options: a ‘six-button’ control scheme that will be most familiar to SF fans and, for the Tekken characters, the option to switch to a more familiar ‘four-button’ control scheme. The first thing lots of people did with the game was try tapping out a few well-known Tekken combos and many of them work just the same.

No details about the NAMCO game or characters outside of those released at the moment.

  • I wont be fool 2 times, only cutscenes are nice like Marvel vs Capcom 3 and theres only like 3-4… This game looks exactly like MvsC3 with some new characters from tekken.. Marvel vs Capcom 3 was the worst game I bought this generation, it was a souless game without content. No need to say that I will pass on this no matter what they can announce about it…

That might sound like a Capcom hater but Im not it was just an awful game in my opinion and this one looks no different

  • @9

i kinda agree. I am excited about the game but i absolutely hated SF4. I much rather play my SSF2 and MvC2. I havent played MvC3 but from what i have seen its not looking good to me.

    I hope im wrong.

  • “so the addition of an animal wouldn’t be so out of place and it could make the game really interesting.”

I already put Blanka in the animal category, so I’m totally on board with other animals and, um, things in the game. I’m curious if they will be able to work Yoshimitsu into the game since he has that sword. It would be fantastic if he kept that spin move and could use it as an anti-crossup.

I didn’t play much Tekken, but I do remember getting a kick out of the little dino Gon and the tekkenball mini game. DLC maybe?

  • Another game by CR@PCOM that will nickel and dime to death….

  • where’s my tekken! this looks like tekken skins over capcom characters. frankly I’ve always seen it opposite…to me streetfighter seems to be the faster game…it’s definitely the button smasher out of the two

  • Look great!!! Can’t wait to play it!!

  • Remember the over-saturation of fighters in the 90’s? And so it begins again…. The only fighter to apparently learn their lesson, when people lost almost all interest in those games, was the Mortal Kombat team. Everyone else seems to be going right back to churning one out every six months… Sad. How about you just keep us updated with downloadable content instead?

  • @James Gallagher

Thank you, James. Good to hear you guys are considering the Tekken fans with this.

  • Looks good. I like the style of the characters. It looks a bit like Street Fighter 4 combined with something else.

  • A when Harry met Sally reference!? Whoever decided on that – I want to be your friend.

  • That’s ALEX on the first pic! :D (raptor wearing boxing gloves)

I’m not that into Street Fighter since I prefer Tekken but this game has me really excited… can’t wait to play it

  • Namco Bandai & Crapcom both suck when it comes to fighting games. Though Crapcom sucks when it comes to games in general this gen.

  • Street Fighter is more button mashy then Tekken? I’ve heard it all now!

  • can i join on that threesome?

  • Is it me or this game looks like another SFIV game with Tekken characters?

  • Tekken ftw!

  • Looks like SSFIV Graphics and Game Play with Tekken Background stages
(its street fighter with tekken characters)

I think anyone who likes street fighter will pick this up.

  • I think this game is going to easily be one of the best fighting games ever. Along with Tekken X Street Fighter.
It’ll be pretty easy to say if you’re a true fighting game fan, you’ll be buying these two games.

There is just one thing I hope you guys are going to nail. Making an actual story. Tekken and Street Fighter in one is just asking for an epic story. Jin and Ryu better work together at one point.

  • Looking forward to both versions!!! Day one purchase!

  • @9(Berae)
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was made under a different producer. Ono actually knows how to make games with soul.

    @15(kingotnw)
Every six months? This doesn’t come until TBA 2012! Capcom releasing one fighter a year is over saturation? With all the game companies currently making fighters, there are maybe 6 or 7 fighters coming out this year?

Shall we talk about shooters? THAT’S over saturation.

  • To everyone saying, “Oh its just SSF4 with Tekken Characters.” If it was the other way around and it was Namco’s game coming out first and this was their game you’d be saying, “OH this is just Tekken with SF characters.” My point is what more do you want?

The game looks great from where I’m sitting, because number 1 this is early in its development. So theres no where it says that any small thing is set in concrete.

To the guy who said Street Fighter is a button masher. Street fighter specials require specific inputs to execute combos and specials. Spam yes….mash no. Tekken on the other hand I find a very mashable fighting game. Just pick Law and MASH both kicks. or Eddie/Christie and MASH LK RK LK RK.

Quite simply Tekken is the masher of the two, I have ta say. But either one, either it be Tekken or SF mashing shows lack of skillz.

Back to topic: I was really impressed with the charge special move mechanic I saw in one of the videos. Is this what will set it apart from SSF4’s focus attack? ya think?

  • I’m so extremely in anticipation of this game, I love both games but prefer Street Fighter so having all my fave Tekken characters in the newest Street Fighter engine works for me. I’ve been reading that there are going to be additions from the SF-verse that didn’t make it into SSFIV.

I can’t wait to see something like Hugo and Poison vs Heihachi and Anna.

  • This is looking like the biggest cross game showdown in history! I’m super pumped for the Street Fighter style game! Only thing I want to see though is that Cammy is confirmed for the Street Fighter side. I was really sad to not see her in Marvel VS Capcom 3. Anyway if that happens I will most likely get this game. Doubt I will get the Tekken style one too, but only because I’m just not a 3D fighter game fan.

  • I LOVE BOTH! I really can’t wait!

  • I WANT THIS SO BAD! Forget Arcade Edition, Give me Street Fighter X Tekken NOW!
