Update on PlayStation Network and Qriocity

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We are currently working to send a similar message to the one below via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These malicious actions have also had an impact on your ability to enjoy the services provided by PlayStation Network and Qriocity including online gaming and online access to music, movies, sports and TV shows. We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.

We’re working day and night to ensure it is done as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and feedback.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

  1. Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
  2. Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
  3. Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.

  • Wow nice to see all of you excited about the psn being back….however I would rather have the promised
identity theft protection Sony has promised.Guess you wont be as excited if we all start getting bills from
creditors weve never dealt with before.

  • I really don’t know why there were people complaining about this saying that it was Sony’s fault that the network was down for so long. You should be thankful that Sony did this to protect your identity.

  • Okay that’s fine. But in the middle of this mess I had changed ISP and ended with a new email address. SONY keeps sending notifications to change my password to my old address which no longer exists. I am quite confused and loss about this …

XBOX 360 SUCKS! …Its all about the PS3. You guys should see the Russian Guy Blowing up his 4TH XBOX
    with crazy guns!

  • >>>>>>>>>>MAIN QUESTION<<<<<<<<< WHAT ABOUT PLAYSTATION STORE??

  • Really 423 too protect our identity?Hmmm hows about encrypting our data? That sure would have been nice.

  • I got a kicked out and got a message that someone else was signed in with my Playstation Network ID but i was still able to stay online and play. anyone else?

  • Been using Qriocity for a few months now and like it.

Ive been looking through all the songs I love while growing up and most of there are there and quality is great. :)

However occasionally I go to the top 100’s and get frustrated with in a few songs and usually go no further than the next crap song beacause you CANT skip the song. You can see the next one but you cant skip the playing song……… WHY?

    Seems stupid.

Unless its fixed ill be going with Google Music the day it starts in Australia.

It would be great if there were a droid Qriocity I guess it will only be Sony phones that could use it. Shame coz Qriocity isnt enough to tempt me to buy a SE phone plus I’m stuck with my HTC till the end of my contract….not that THAT is a bad thing. But unless the lack of skip in the top 100 and non sony phone being able to use qriocity it will be Google Music for me.

  • Dashowstoppr2011

and make sure it indeed works Further more and here’s the real Kicker they can manually reset and send you the email links that don’t work but You have to go 14 before such an email actually arrives. So Yeah Sony You really Value Us as the consumer my Ass Quit Lying to people

  • Dashowstoppr2011

Maybe just Maybe what Sony really needs is a another law suit against them but this time from the Entire PS3 Community as a whole unit then they’ll have no choice but to actually listen and more to point truly respect and value the consumer whom which keeps $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in their pocket buying systems and games in stead of their continue lip service and run around Very Frustrating and Highly disrespectful Sony on your Part just sayin.

  • Some firm in Califorina already started a class action law suit for psn and qurocity users.
Its for not encrypting our data as well as not telling us that our data may have been
stolen until a week after the fact.

  • is the playstationnetwork back on? whats happening? can someone please tell me whats going on?

  • I’m proud of Sony, cause they are trying their best to bring the server back. I want to play Resistance: Retribution Online already. :,(

  • how much more time……its takin too long

  • Hello Every body So glad to be back ON LIne…Woooooo Hoooooo…………Sony best be breaking out some Cash or Free online goodies for all the trouble.for getting our Personal Informaion “Stolen”………Yeah….Hew Haw………..Watch me now………Arrrrrrr…..Can you say…..Geeeeek………Nerd……..

  • Hey how long will My girl friend who lives in Guadaljara, Jalisco Mexico be on line,…..She is very up-set. Why is Sony making her wait so long. NOT COOL …She’s dieing too play Battle Filed Bad Co. 2……..Yeah……

  • oh i cant wait to play some inFAMOUS AND DEADNATION!

THX SONY! When it comes to gaming you guys never disappoint me!

  • WOOOT,WERE BACK!!……

  • Cant wait for playstation plus!

  • hahahahahhahahahahaahahahahahahahahaha

  • HAAA HAAA HAAAAAAA Sony Your such a Tease :) Now turn it back on!

  • Man i cant get stuff FRom RLS too thats down !@#$!

  • YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • WOW This is the worst response to a data breach that I have ever experienced. My paypal account got compromised yesterday and the 800 HOTLINE number to Sony tells me they cant handle the call volume and tells me to just hang up and try again. Right, I have alrady spent 2 days trying to fix this and now I am going to spend the day calling your number because a month after you gave out all my personal data you still DONT HAVE A SOLUTION!

  • What again?! another intrusion..Well, So much for the new security. I am no longer going to have the PS3 online. Oh wait weren’t we warned the the site was up and running that there would be another attack? Didn’t the hackers say that they had access still? Well. , glad I heeded the warning.

Online Intruder Broke Into Sony Internet Subsidiary’s User Accounts

“Although we can’t completely rule out the possibility that there is a connection with the PSN issue, the likelihood is low,” said Keisuke Watabe, a spokesman at So-net Entertainment. He said it was unlikely because the method of intrusion used was so different.

So-net, which is about 58% owned by Sony and a Sony financial unit, said the points from 128 customer accounts were redeemed without permission. Another 73 accounts were accessed, but the points were not redeemed. Also, 90 e-mail accounts on the So-net network were compromised.

  • I do have one serious question, if the PSN continually gets hacked time and time again, what will become of the PS# games and such? It appears that our PS3s are not the items needing security but we as the consumers need some way to secure our selves?

All I want to Know is this how the PS3 is going to end? Continued attacks up on the services until the plane goes down in a fiery ball? I am very curious as to what will come if The PSN is continually attacked?

I think Sony has awaken and entity that is extremely sophisticated and heck bent on destruction of the cooperation its self. Sony, I think you have a “God Zilla:” on your hands.
