Q&A #2 for PlayStation Network and Qriocity Services

Yesterday, we addressed a number of your questions relating to the malicious intrusion into our network. You can find that FAQ here. As we get closer to restoration of service, here are more answers to your questions, many of which are more gaming related:

Q: Will our download history/friends list/settings be affected by the PSN downtime?
A: No, they will not.

Q: Will trophies that were earned in single-player offline games during the outage be intact when the service resumes?
A: These trophies are intact and will be re-synched when the network is once again operational.

Q: Will my PS+ cloud saves be retrievable?
A: Yes, once PSN is restored.

Q: What if we have a subscription to PS3 MMOs DC Universe Online or Free Realms? Will we get compensation for that?
A: From Sony Online Entertainment: “We apologize for any inconvenience players may have experienced as a result of the recent service interruption. As a global leader in online gaming, SOE is committed to delivering stable and entertaining games for players of all ages. To thank players for their patience, we will be hosting special events across our game portfolio. We are also working on a “make good” plan for players of the PS3 versions of DC Universe Online and Free Realms. Details will be available soon on the individual game websites and forums.”

Q: Will there be a goodwill gesture for the time we haven’t been able to utilize PSN/Qriocity?
A: We are currently evaluating ways to show appreciation for your extraordinary patience as we work to get these services back online.

Thank you for your continued feedback.

  • @xxnike629xx you’re such a troll….

  • About 2 and a half hours til Sony admits their epic failure.

  • Now we’re down to just the Xbox360 and Wii this gen. The PS3 is going to end up just like the PSPGo. Sad.

  • erg, a press release. Oh Joy…I set the DVR to record CNN or some one…So we Finally found out what it takes to get these people to show there faces? It will be interesting. Say wasn’t the PSN suppose to be up and running? I got a bad feeling about that press release.. I hope I am Wrong.

  • omg….im so board right now. T_T *cries to self*

  • Kaz will talk in about 105 minutes

  • I never got there letter that as suppose to have been sent out with regards to the breach.

  • Well, May 3 is the end of “We hope to have some services up within a week.”

  • @data, the email? I got one.

  • Just a few days after Sony admitted that hackers may have obtained credit card information from PlayStation network users, some are claiming to have up to 2.2 million card numbers for sale.

PC World spoke to a few data security analysts that said even though Sony claims credit card data was encrypted, it’s still possible that the hackers were able to decrypt it by now.

Got to love Credit Unions way better then banks when it comes to protecting a person

  • @zekececil14 Never mind I found it, it was in account that I never use save for it be strictly used with the PS3 but the alternate ones did get the letter?? I guess they only send it to the accounts with the PS3 and not to the accounts I had used for the PC. Weierd.

  • hmm I wonder if not renewing the ToS may have saved my hide lol.. I never renewed the ToS with the PS3.`

  • My system is still on 3.55 so there is now way I could log in to renew the TOS. Like I said I was dead serious about not updating the thing. The PS3 is under a separate account, I only accepted the ToS on the PC end. I even did a complete reset the unit. all it has on it is photos and the video editor along with all my vids. This thing also never had a TOS or agreement when it came out of the box form the factory. But then again it was a Re-Conditon model to. Which has a unique ID Code as well. It doesn’t start with SECH It starts with an RC which stands for Re-Conditioned. They had so many issues with the repairs taht they had to start using a newer Scheme for the thing.

  • AND NO ITS NOT HACKED EITHER! I say this because soem people will Automatically think I am running a hacked system. Though tempted.

  • Hopefully we will know an approximate when PSN will be restore, and more details about the crisis with Hirai Kazuo’s conference with the press later.

  • Data, if you dont play online, WHY ARE YOU HERE?

  • Thats a pretty valid question if your on 3.55 you would have no access to the store or PSN, I would think. And you stated that you reset your system, just curious to why your credit card info would be in the system?

  • I haven’t really read all your posts so I might have missed something.

  • If you understand Japanese I grabbed a link from a site

Kaz Hirai to Address Media on PSN Security Breach
Sony calls a press conference in Japan.
    April 30, 2011

Sony will hold a press conference to discuss the company’s recent security breach of its PlayStation Network services, Reuters reports.

Executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai will address the media on Sunday afternoon in Japan to discuss a variety of issues, including updates on its investigation behind the breach and when the Network is scheduled to become operational again.

The conference takes place at 2:00 PM in Tokyo (1:00 AM EST/10:00 PM PST).

  • I posted the link in comment 423 or 424 to what nike is talking about

  • .irwebcasting.com/live/110501/02/index.html

just add the w w w in front cheers!! And have a translator ready~~

  • Conference should be starting.

  • Dang PS3 browser, the video isn’t supported.

  • so……………….whats being said. I don’t know Japanese. :/

  • Sony plans to offer free downloads of unidentified “content,” 30 days of free PlayStation Plus access to new and existing members, and 30 days of free Qriocity service. The paper also says that PSN service will be restored “soon.”

    OMG OMG OMG

  • I see alot of free themes and avatars in peoples’ futures. i wouldn’t expect alot of games to be free. But an extra 30 days of Plus is nice, got 16 months then. =) Hopefully they will put more effort into Plus because the last 2 months have been lackluster at best.

and ‘soon’ is nice. I wanna sync and see how many I got. =)

  • @B-Real206
I believe this is what people are wanting to know is just how long does Sony hold the data for? And when we ask for it to deleted do they really delete. I hope when he speaks it isn’t the repeat of the people from Toyota kind of thing and the Company that is spear heading the Nuclear disasters weren’t very forth coming either.
I will be very disappointed if the speech which is about to be said isn’t detailed in addressing our concerns… We need details.
I vslue them and there Culture, and am in no way putting them down…When things happen though, we need the truth.

  • “We apologize deeply for causing great unease and trouble to our users,” Hirai said before he and other executives bowed deeply at a briefing in Tokyo.
    That’s it?!

  • Actually giving the culture values and a second thought
Here is what I have learned :
    1. The deep bow:

This bow is done when meeting with someone who is older than yourself or someone you may consider more experienced or wise – a teacher, a doctor, a lawyer, etc. Japanese business men also use this form of bow when business deals have been reached with another company or person – projecting respect and thanks rolled into one. This particular bow does not, in any way, show that you are grovelling or acting gratuitously. Nor is it rote. It is, as the name suggests, “deep” thanks. The “deep bow” is also used with an apology and indicates true remorse.

    2. The Medium bow:

This bow is performed many times per day. It is an action done so much, one often doesn’t remember doing it. The medium bow is the same as saying, “Thank you”, when a store keeper serves you. You should bow to the subway station man, after he’s explained, for the umpteenth time, how to get to the nearest department store. You should bow to the delivery man when he arrives at your door with that new XBOX you ordered. And you should bow when you are offer something, a seat, a drink, etc.

  • 3. The slight nod:

This is done among friends and is best described as saying “thanks” or “cheers”. It, along with the medium bow, is used daily in many situations. At a bar, after receiving your drink, a slight nod tells the bartender, thanks. It is a small gesture and I believe some of us in the west, do a similar movement of the head, when we want to convey our gratitude.

To sum up, it is important to understand that the Japanese are not a “skin-ship” nation. Touching someone on the shoulder we you first meet him or her is not the done thing. Japanese people need their space. Once he or she relaxes, you’ll find it easier to, not only speak with the person, but easier overall as the “my space” required at the beginning has diminished significantly. These people are, generally, a shy breed of human, one might call them meek. However, until they get to know you, an invisible shield encompasses them and the bow is the only way they know of how to greet you, thank you and show respect to you without lowering the shield.

I hope that this has been helpful.

  • Asked why Sony didn’t inform customers about the implications of the breach sooner, Hirai said that “sifting through the data took a long time.” He said the company has been under a sustained cyber-attack for about six weeks, and that the personal information of Sony executives and their families have been published online.
The attacks, which were carried out against a data center in San Diego, are taking place against the backdrop of Sony’s recent tangle with the hacker George Hotz, after he uncovered a method to jailbreak the Playstation 3 gaming system in order to allow it play games that Sony hadn’t approved. Sony sued him, but ultimately settled out of court. However the wrangle enraged hackers in loosely affiliation community operating under the name
    continued next line:

  • Whoever carried out the attack and whatever their reason, the damage to Sony is worsening by the day. Sony’s shares fell more than 4 percent in Tokyo Friday and are now trading at their lowest level in nearly two years, It’s not yet clear how much of a hit to its earnings this incident will cause, though one has to assume that many customers are probably lost both from the Playstation Network and from Qriocity for good.

Hirai said the company may offer to pay fees that credit card companies charge to issue new cards for affected customers. Add to that the costs from additional security measures that will certainly follow, the expense from multiple lawsuits some of which are already filed, and the cost to respond to regulators and lawmakers around the world who are now lining up against Sony, and it appears this problem is going to get expensive really fast.
