The first half of 2011 is proving to be an exciting one for PlayStation fans in North America. We’re only half-way through April and already we’ve launched blockbuster titles including Killzone 3 and MLB 11 The Show. These games give gamers the chance to experience gaming at its best, utilizing both stereoscopic 3D and PlayStation Move, while also proving that it is possible to create motion-control games for core gamers to enjoy. Next Tuesday we go one step further when SOCOM 4: US NAVY SEALs hits store shelves. To kick off this exciting launch we’ve brought together Kevin Butler and some real US Navy SEALs, to give us a few pointers on what it takes to succeed under fire in SOCOM 4.

Guitar Hero’s Tale Ends (for now) with a Massive Giveaway. Enter Here!

Guitar Hero

“We thought, there is no way this game is going to be successful.”

Prophetic words from Alex Rigopulos, CEO of Harmonix, recalling the early days of Guitar Hero. And when you look back far enough – past the millions of copies sold, past the weekend parties, before the game became a pop-culture milestone – his skepticism is actually very understandable.

At that point in history – 2005 — Harmonix had created several high-quality games, but none that were megahits. Frequency and Amplitude brought innovative music gameplay on PlayStation 2, following the trail blazed by Parappa the Rapper, Um Jammer Lammy, and Konami’s Japan-only Guitar Freaks. Harmonix had also worked with Konami on Karaoke Revolution with success, but even Rigopulos says “they weren’t blockbuster hits, they were base hits.”

Portal 2: Pretty Much Every PS3 Question Answered (and that Cake thing, too)

+ Posted by Sid Shuman

portal 2

Valve Software has repeatedly described Portal 2 for the PS3 as being “the best console version of the game.” And for good reason, given that you’ll get a free PC or Mac version of Portal 2 along with your PS3 copy, as well as exclusive cross-platform PS3-to-PC co-op gameplay and voice chat, Steamworks features and much more. Good stuff!

Not long ago, we asked you to submit your very best PS3 Portal 2 questions. We wanted every nerdy, detail-obsessed question possible and, as we’ve come to learn, PS3 fans never disappoint. Last week, we finally cornered Portal 2’s Project Lead Joshua Weier and Writer Erik Wolpaw in a bare concrete room under harsh florescent lighting. We slapped a thick stack of your questions on the table, cracked our knuckles, and extracted the answers via a combination of brow beating, idle threats, and good old-fashioned seduction.

Actually, we just called them on the phone and goofed off for an hour or so. It went something like this:

Mortal Kombat: Komposing Cinematic Audio and the Origins of Toasty!

+ Posted by Dan Forden

toastylead

This time around, we’ve made an effort to create a cinematic game audio experience. While we definitely wanted to keep and enhance the bone-crunching audio design of the past, we also wanted to create a dynamic experience, so that big events really stand out but we can also hear things like the rustling of the fighter’s clothes and details in the fighting arenas like branches creaking in the Living Forest, insects buzzing in the Courtyard, and people screaming in the distance in the Dead Pool. With nearly two hours of cinematic cut-scenes, we really wanted the player to have a cinema-quality audio experience throughout the story mode, yet still get the in-your-face game experience during the fights.

A lot of people ask me about where “Toasty” came from…

When Street Fighter Met Tekken

+ Posted by James Gallagher

Street Fighter x Tekken

At Captivate last week, Capcom unveiled the first batch of playable characters in Street Fighter X Tekken: Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile and Abel from Street Fighter and Kazuya, Nina Williams, King, Marduk and Bob from Tekken. Afterwords, Producer Yoshinori Ono spoke how Street Fighter X Tekken came to be. In his words…

When we [Capcom] took that 10 year break between releasing Street Fighter games, I feel that Tekken diligently stoked the fighting game campfire and kept people interested. With Street Fighter IV we tossed kerosene on that fire and got fans really excited about fighting games again.
