Rockstar Games and Sony Joint Statement on L.A. Noire

Patrick Seybold's Avatar + Posted by Patrick Seybold on May 19, 2011 // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire. At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat. We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise. If you are experiencing any issues with L.A. Noire or your PS3 hardware, please contact technical support using any of the means provided below:

and set it in an open area what i do with my ps3 is its sitting away from everything it has 2-3 feet of open space all around it and its also sitting about 3 inches from the ground by placing 2 DVD cases under it i have done this since i bought my ps3 years ago and have never had an issue with any game if any of my suggestions don’t help i would consider looking into buying a new ps3 or going to YouTube and following a step by step guide on how to clean a ps3 by taking it apart not all the way apart jut to open the top and blow dust out don’t do this if your still under warranty thoe and you can buy the cans of air for blowing dust out at walmart or most computer stores for like $5 its easy to do and i have done it to my PS3 myself

@349 Klokateer1986. Believe it or not I AM one of those people who struggles financially. Maybe it’s just the state I live in. Even the rundown rat-holes have central air in Florida.

What problem??? I’ve been playing L.A. Noire since i pre-ordered it and nothing has happened. The only thing that happens is when you try to go to the Playstation Store. It freezes when you enter the PS Store.

@Malfor RE: giovani-57- Typing in all caps using atrocious grammar, poor spelling and an abundance of exclamation points. Sounds like your typical X-Box fanboy to me.

Well… it seems that almost everyone is having the same problem PS3. When PSN was down Sony gave us a time frame and broke it. They easily got hacked. It wouldn’t surprize me if it was the problem and later they said something really pitiful and promised to do something about it that would take, say a time frame around 2-4 weeks.

Alot of my games over heat my PS3. A way I keep it cool is by flipping it over upside down.

When is the PS Store gunna be back up? I heard tomorrow ( 5/23/11 ) or 30-31. I got 70 green ones and the new zombie maps Plus the GTA4 stuff like BoGT and TlatD. PSN has disappointed about 10 million people alot of people are waiting for the store to be back up it really shoun’t take that long… just like the PSN downage… STOP SITTING THERE EATING DONUTS AND DRINKING COFFEE AND PUT THE PS STORE BACK UP ( sorry I get excited :))

The only thing i like better between the 2 systems, is xbox live, just cuz updates and downloads are much faster, and better connections for multiplayer, but stuff like that is not enough for me to choose between the 2. I like my ps3 for fighting games and exclusive stuff, and my 360 for first person shooters and their exclusive stuff.

When I have been playing, my PS3 has been warm but it never shut down or froze, but is getting warm considered overheating?

@ Dypyro I own both a PS3 & Xbox 360 slim. My Xbox has not crashed or froze since I bought LA Noire for my X360.

What we need to be concerned with is when the Store will finally be up.

@MALFOR yeah, i guess your right. i should have bought all consoles but i thought i had the best and in the end it was more trouble than what its worth. dont get me wrong, i prefer ps3 over x-box anytime, but sony is one let down after another! its hard for me to get used to the x-box remote but so far thats the only bad thing i have to say bout the x-box so far.

I have the launch model of the PS3 as well and I never had any issues. though the menu sometimes freezes when trying to access ps store, I guess that will be fixed once it opens.
I have been playing the game almost non stop since May 19th and the game has never frozen on me unlike a lot of other games have. So statistically this is the most stable game I’ve played on my PS3.
I hope the downtime due today Is going to be about preparing the PS Store so I can download my preorder content. I really want another case as I’ve got nothing left to do now.

@giovani-57 I feel offended that I’d rather buy a Honda or Toyota. What about European cars, Nissan, Hyundai and other American cars. If Ford makes a bad car doesn’t make them obsolete right?
The Playstation is a really good console and so is the Xbox, but some times companies make bad decisions and speak before they know what’s good for them.
—-
If Sony had revived the store earlier instead of wasting time finding games that consumers wouldn’t have bought again in the first place I would have been a lot more happy. (To be clear the games are good, but most people that want them have already bought them; you don’t need 2 issues of the same thing.)
Also I think that the worst mistake Sony did was to say that they were going to give stuff away for free. Making people anticipate something much more awesome than they could actually give to the community.

I have this same problem and reported it 5 days ago to technical support. Sony needs to address this, not just say it isn’t the softwares fault but are working to find a solution. When am I going to get a response? People need to post if they are having this problem too!

Ok, this is to all the people that have said their PS3 hasn’t overheated so it must be because of dust and hot weather – Just because your PS3 or your friends’ PS3 hasn’t overheated doesn’t mean there isn’t a problem. And that doesn’t make you an expert on what is overheating the PS3. Not every single PS3 is going to die from overheating. Rockstar, developers that are experts, have said they did several tests and found older model PS3s to have an overheating problem. I would post a link, but it would probably be moderated, so just do some googling to find Rockstar’s original statement before they deleted it.

Was thinking about picking this up about a week ago (L.A. Noire), my friend said to wait as he was gonna pick it up the next day. Today I finally heard from him again. He had a 120GB slim, played this game after he played a few other games which worked normally. Froze it right up, he can’t get it to turn back on, had to get a new psn id, only run into him due to a mutual friend inviting me to play il-2. to hell with this game I have an older 80GB system and don’t have the sort of disposable income to go replacing it. Unless you do I would advise being very catious about it, personally I’m just not gonna risk it. Caveat Emptor

I’ve been kinda wondering if I should get Red Dead Redemption and maybe La Noire sometime, since I have actually played GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA4 and enjoyed them all quite a bit.

One thing I’ve never liked about the games is the amount of religious expletives. Sometimes even when you’re simply driving through traffic.

I started to watch one of the LA Noire trailers. The very first line has a religious expletive. I really think Rockstar should consider adding an option for language filters to their games in the future. No need to take it out, just have the option there. I would suggest the same for blood and gore, even though it doesn’t bother me.

Another thing about the language that bothers me, is that I have been under the impression that the noire style dated back to.. well.. “Hollywood’s classic film noire period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s.” I know I haven’t seen many noire films, but I doubt they were ever heavy on the religious expletives.

Oh well, regardless, it’s your choice Rockstar Games. A little extra effort can go a long way. Until you start adding a language filter to your games, I won’t be purchasing them anymore.
