Your Starhawk Questions Answered

I can’t believe I’m posting on the PlayStation Blog again. It’s been forever! So what’s new you ask? Well, let’s see, not too much — oh yeah, we announced Starhawk! *cough* Finally. *cough*

The team and I have been wicked happy with the response from the media and the fans so far. Seeing you guys excited makes all the late nights worth it! But, we still have a lot of work ahead of us so thanks for all of the positive energy. We all know a good reveal is just the first step in making our fans happy and we’re looking forward to showing you guys even more tasty Starhawk content and get you more plugged into the Starhawk universe! So the other day I asked all of you on Twitter to send me Starhawk questions that you wanted to get answered, and while we’re still planning on doing a full FAQ post here on the PlayStation.Blog, I wanted to take a few of the questions that were popular and answer them straight away. Here goes:

Starhawk for PS3

Does Starhawk have two flight modes?

YES. Initially we wanted to have Starhawk use only a single flight mode so that all players were unified. We worked a lot on this but ultimately decided that the needs of a newbie player and the needs of a hardcore Warhawk fan were just too far apart and we weren’t willing to make the compromises needed to jam everyone into a single flight mode. So…Starhawk has two flight modes and both are great! The default mode is very simple and great for new to mid-level players (and yes, reverse aiming issues have been fixed). It’s a re-vamped version of our “arcade mode” (but much better), thanks in part to a lot of play testing on it. The advanced mode is for players that want even more control while flying around in the Hawk. It’s just like Warhawk’s “pro mode” flight mode.

Server list or matchmaking?

In Starhawk you have both. Matchmaking is good for casual players that just want to be put into a game quickly, or for when we need to enforce that players are not “cheating” or stat padding or whatever you want to call it. It lets the Starhawk servers control which players get put into which games. That said, our fans LOVE it so we let you browse the custom “non-official” games through a server list. This gives you the best of both worlds.

Is Starhawk’s character camera new?

YES. We got a lot of questions from people that noticed from the video that there was a tight over-the-shoulder (OTS) camera in some of the shots. We still have a normal camera that is further away from the character, although it is a bit closer than what we had in Warhawk. However, this new OTS aiming mode is enabled when you zoom in with your weapon. It gives you a combat choice—you can do your normal run-and-gun at some cost of accuracy or you can go OTS for more accuracy, although you’ll be a bit slower.

Does Starhawk still use weapon pickups?

Hell yes! I was actually surprised that people were worried about this. It was interesting to see the Tweets from people who were scared that we might be going to a class-based load out approach. No! We still have pickups. And getting a weapon is not limited by rank. That kind of thing just doesn’t work for our type of gameplay. In fact, weapon pickups are an important part of Build & Battle. For example, If you want your team to have “snipers,” you can build lookout towers which include the sniper rifle pickup. Or, if you want some heavy weapons, you can build a supply bunker to get a rocket launcher and a shotgun. Now of course we are still in the process of tuning the game so things are always bound to change, but this should give you a good idea of where we’re headed.

Starhawk for PS3

Are there space environments?

100% YES. The outer space environment set that the art team here at LightBox Interactive has put together is really awesome. Super fun to play on and looks great. Some of the elements are still being worked on and we don’t want to show it untill we’re 100% happy with it. But since sooo many of you guys asked, Sony was okay with me at least telling you that Starhawk was not just about terrain battles. :-)

There are a ton of other questions that you sent me and I will answer them as soon as I can, but for now, I wanted to get a little bit more info out to you all! Hopefully I’ll get to see some of you at E3 if you swing by to get your hands on Starhawk! Keep your eyes on the PlayStation.Blog and www.starhawkthegame.com for more updates, and if you’re interested in seeing behind the production curtain a bit, I often post behind the scenes pics of us making Starhawk on my Twitter account @dylanjobe, so check it out!

Okay, that’s really it for right now. Maybe I’ll include a puzzle with my next blog post—I promise it will be more challenging than the stuff I posted for Warhawk :-P

  • Man, cant wait to play this. I was playing warhawk hardcore for a solid 2 years.. Kinda got tired of it… But so glad starhawk is coming out. Day 1 purchase for me. Plus cant wait for beta… Any details on beta?

  • plasticmonkeycra

    yeah, Sony, your store, WTF!!!!!!

  • This post has nothing to do with Starhawk but id like to know when we will get the PS Store back ??? wish there was an update section giving us a little info on that or a timeline ( i understand things are never set in stone just would like to have an idea) Anyways on subject Starhawk looks good graphics look to be a big improvement over Warhawk (which i use to play a bit of ) so i ll have to check it out when it releases :-)

  • WarHawk2 is taking alot of elements from Battlezone II: Combat Commander.

  • I have only one simple question, will dedicated ranked servers be in starhawk please say yes.

  • Is this game online only?

  • I can’t wait for this title to be released. Will be picking this one up day one to be sure.

  • This is one of my guys on my Wish list. other’s mw3 and ratchet and clank all 4one better than their F**** Halo

  • On-line Split-screen multiplayer???????

  • I have 1 question.
Can we compare the clan System from Starhawk with Killzone 2?

  • anybody

  • My favourite part about Warhawk was the couch co-op for the online multiplayer. Will that be returning in Starhawk?

  • What I really want to know is… will there be a party system?! Playing Warhawk was awesome, but it got old real fast having be on the phone with my buddies trying to tell them what server to jump in.

So will there or will there not be a party system?

  • Will we be seeing a Warhawk-like character customization setup, with the ranking system being tied in with what you have available, or will we be seeing some kind of major change in how this works?

Warhawk’s method of unlocking new customization options was, in my opinion, flawless. I found the new clothing options to be -much- more rewarding than just the new rank symbol. Don’t get me wrong here, the symbol was nice and all, but the clothing is what keeps me trying to rank up.

Also, will Starhawk be seeing any special ‘perks’ for those who may have gotten to General rank in the first game? It would definitely give people incentive to go and play more Warhawk for the next year, if there was.

    • I can kinda answer these questions because we talked about them at our unveil event in Austin.

YES, there is customization like in Warhawk but we’ve improved it and increased it and YES, there are skills (“perks”) that you can unlock as you rank-up

  • Guys When Will Play station store back up i want to at least use the plus i want add ons and stuff too so update us and people are saying we get a free game do we actually get a free game it would be awesome please or we should get 20$ so please give us what we want

  • Speaking of puzzles, whatever happened to that three team game mode you teased around the time the third Warhawk expansion was released?

  • StarHawk is looking very tasty indeed!! Can’t wait to play both it, and Twisted Metal!!

Sony rep came into work today and said PS Store service should start returning on 24th with updates every few days to catch up

  • I watched some Starhawk trailers…. game looks pretty cool. But one thing concerns me, will there be destructible environments? Static environments are starting to become old tech.

I hate to bring up other games but destructible environments is what made Battlefield Bad Company 2 great and it will be a big reason why Battlefield 3 will probably be great also.

In the Starhawk videos I’ve seen destructible environments seemed to play a very minor role. Of course the “buildables” can be destroyed but what about the rest of the level (that seems to make up a vast majority of the architecture)?

The reason why this ‘concerns’ me is because I bought Killzone 3 and got quickly bored with its static environments. Meanwhile BFBC2’s destructible environments is a big part of what keeps the game from getting stale.

    • The terrain and macro elements are not destructible because we want to preserver some core flow and layout for our map designs. However, all of the structures that you build on top of that “foundation” are fully destructible.

  • Ascendant_Mayhem

Can’t wait until Starhawk is released. The gameplay in Warhawk is fantastic, and to say you’ve got more and more content coming along is really great news. A quick question, though; I think this may not be the brightest question in the world, but isn’t going to be possible to drop spawn points in the Build and Battle system? I think it would be pretty neat to drop a respawn flag closer toward the next base for increased invasion speed. Last question; will it be possible to crush enemies with these falling structures, or have you prevented that from happening? It would be pretty funny to see it happen once, but if players kept doing it over and over, it would ruin the gameplay.

    • Can’t go into the details of “forward spawning” right now but I look forward to talking more about it with you guys ;-)

And YES, you can crush someone with a building and we net-sync the glowing placement graphic that represents where the building will land so that players get some warning that there’s a building in-bound! This makes it not frustrating because you’re not ever caught wondering “whoa, what happened?”.

We always try to be very clear with our cause and effect.

  • looks very cool. Thanks for the answers but Playstation store is still down. i heard it would be the 24th but it might be a rumor and sony said before the 31st but they have gave us falty information. so it is probably aroun those days.Anyways THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • woops typo on 113

  • will have co-op campaign??

    • The Co-Op in Starhawk is designed as a very specific, and fun game mode that is separate from the story-driven campaign about Emmett Graves in the Frontier.

More on our Co-Op mode in the days ahead!

  • I belive in you sony!!! you can fix your store by tomorrow!!!

  • Here’s a good question will there be blood?

  • VincentVendetta

I hope Starhawk breathes new life in the space combat genre.

  • Hey Dylan,

In Warhawk, there are 1500+ generals and thousands of other players with immense skill. Will this experience and skill level transfer to Starhawk and if so, how will you deal with separating levels of skill IE: Partitioning Warhawk Vets from the average Joe who saw a Starhawk advertisement.

In addition to this, in Warhawk, Rookie servers were populated by Alt Accounts who would avoid getting the Bandit 4×4 badge to noob pound. This seemed solvable by simply instituting a point limit that would force these alts out of the servers. My part two question is, how will you separate the players who had played Warhawk but had since made a new account from the new guys.

    • We’re really trying to help partition players so that the games are far more balanced. Warhawk was a fun game but the master players out there could just come rolling through your game and make it pretty frustrating for the more novice players.

The precise details of our Matchmaking system we may opt to never reveal. Not that we don’t want to share the info, but if we did so, I can imagine players trying to exploit it.

We are planning on doing something “Special” for all of our diehard Warhawk fans but at this time, we are not planning on transferring XP from Warhawk to Starhawk.

  • I’m real excited about Starhawk. I didn’t play Warhawk, but it sounds like I should pick it up. Cheers, and work good and hard on an amazing-looking game!

  • Public beta? I think all the old Warhawkers should get a key. Is there anything I can do to get on that list?

Also thanks for making Warhawk look stale in comparison. 2012? ah needs more beta.

  • Warhawk was beast, so I cant wait for this.. I hope it still contains that kind of feel when you got into a airplane for the first time in warhawk, and feel like a noob again

  • I know this really has nothing to do with this, but I was wondering when we were going to get an update on here about PlayStation Store. I’m very excited about Little Big Planet. lol

  • GET2DAACHOPPAAAA

Does space battles mean you can leave/ re-enter the atmosphere?

  • Are you wearing any pants?

  • Will this game have any cursing? Cuz, i really cant take much of it…

  • Warhawk is awesome, try it, even if you have total ADD you will love it for at least long enough to get your money’s worth. trust me.

My only question is this: The items drop to the ground violently from the dropship above, it looks beast. But what happens when you enemy is standing in the drop zone? Do they get killed in a similarly epic manner?

  • Oh sorry for posting twice but will the UI be any better than Warhawk? That was the only thing I Genuinely hated about that game. Everything else was GLORIOUS. :)

  • hey have money to spend psn store any updates yet on it

  • This blog isn’t even about psn store so go post your winy comments somewhere else please

  • you ppl complaining need to shut up and stop being spoiled little brats! the store will be up when it’s ready!

  • There is already an update remember before the end of the month. Jeesh should charge you people to play online then you would have a reasonable [DELETED]. give it a rest already sickening

  • “we are not planning on transferring XP from Warhawk to Starhawk.” THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

  • Will there be “set” bases like in Warhawk or has the build and play replaced the need for those?

    • There are still location where bases can be captured and built, but a lot of the structures come from the the buildings that players build themselves.

  • Will be another great ps3 game.

  • wow nice looking game looks like alot of fun

  • I loved warhawk sooo much, it literally was the first ps3 game I got and it stayed that way for a while. One thing that disappointed me was the lack of awsome air ships. I am a sucker for flying warships:). I understood that multiplayer only limited the addition (especiallyfor a launch title) but will there be a place for airships to fly around, attack, defend, maybe pilot???

  • This looks awsome but one question, is there going to be bigger explosions cause I buy most of types of games based on the bigness of explosions in the trailers so that’s what I’m really wanting to know.

  • What game modes have been announced? I know we have seen some footage from CTF but any other that you can let us know about yet?

    • we really haven’t gone into a ton of detail on the modes. The modes we have mentioned thus far are: CTF and Co-Op.

  • Loving everything i’ve seen thus far and I have high hopes for this game.

I do have some questions regarding the ground mech mode…..

They seem to move quite slow on the ground (understandable to give the ground troops a chance) but it seems that two RPG shots (looking at trailers) seem to take them down meaning they are quite vulnerable when on the ground and if they’re strength is similar to what a Warhawk was then one tank shot should take them down.

My question would be do they have the ability to have a short boost to be able to avoid weapon fire if not locked on? I’m sure you’ve worked on balance (as you’ve mentioned numerous times) but I want to be able to use the mech on the ground without the worry i’ll instantly be destroyed. Just increasing the armour would mean that those people that do those awesome ground to air tank shots would be short changed if it didn’t kill them in one hit.

Thinking about it I wouldn’t want your job of balancing …. troop, vehicle, turrets and hawks. LOL

    • Balance is a challenge for sure. And there are so many aspects to Starhawk that we have a lot of work ahead of us.

But… We are constantly playing it and refining our balance. Its a very organic process as you can imagine. Sometimes you see stuff in those videos that were captured for “dramatic” effect and not really indicative of the final balance of the game.

And honestly, balance will be something that we work on throughout our public BETA and even after release. We’ll be getting tons of good feedback from our community and we plan on making sure that Starhawk will be as balanced as possible.

  • I am so excited about this game. My cousin turned me on to Warhawk under a lot of initial critisim from me. I was stunned with Warhawk game play. After I started playing Warhawk I always said that Warhawk was an extremely better game than Halo, Call of Duty, or Battlefield Bad Company. To hear that there is a Space element has boosted my anticipation. Good job guys. Next time could you start the sequel a little faster?haha just kidding, great games take time.

    • Glad to hear it!

We have actually heard that a lot. Some players were not initially interested in Warhawk but after they got a chance to play it, they were hooked.

  • The tank is by far my favorite. Can you tell me something about how it works in Starhawk?

    • I want to, but I can’t talk about the “tank” right now. I can tell you we have been playing with it a lot lately in our playtests and its really fun. Still needs work and refinement but we’re happy with how it’s progressing!

  • Bought Warhawk when it first came out and loved it. One question Dylan, does lightbox have plans to support Starhawk like Warhawk was? I loved that you guys did not just ship the game and never looked back. Back then to many games were shipped and never touched again and I liked the fact that Warhawk had not only DLC but gameplay updates that tightened up and made the game better.

Sony has been on a roll for the last couple of years, who ever plans the first party release schedule needs a raise because the first party exclusives just keep coming and they are always the best games in their genres. It seems like every other month a Sony exclusive is coming out.

    • We very much want to support Starhawk and have developed new systems in the game and core tech to allow us to provide even better/quicker support and response to the needs of our community.
