Your Starhawk Questions Answered

Dylan Jobe's Avatar + Posted by Dylan Jobe on May 23, 2011 // President, LightBox Interactive

I can’t believe I’m posting on the PlayStation Blog again. It’s been forever! So what’s new you ask? Well, let’s see, not too much — oh yeah, we announced Starhawk! *cough* Finally. *cough*

The team and I have been wicked happy with the response from the media and the fans so far. Seeing you guys excited makes all the late nights worth it! But, we still have a lot of work ahead of us so thanks for all of the positive energy. We all know a good reveal is just the first step in making our fans happy and we’re looking forward to showing you guys even more tasty Starhawk content and get you more plugged into the Starhawk universe! So the other day I asked all of you on Twitter to send me Starhawk questions that you wanted to get answered, and while we’re still planning on doing a full FAQ post here on the PlayStation.Blog, I wanted to take a few of the questions that were popular and answer them straight away. Here goes:

Starhawk for PS3

Does Starhawk have two flight modes?

YES. Initially we wanted to have Starhawk use only a single flight mode so that all players were unified. We worked a lot on this but ultimately decided that the needs of a newbie player and the needs of a hardcore Warhawk fan were just too far apart and we weren’t willing to make the compromises needed to jam everyone into a single flight mode. So…Starhawk has two flight modes and both are great! The default mode is very simple and great for new to mid-level players (and yes, reverse aiming issues have been fixed). It’s a re-vamped version of our “arcade mode” (but much better), thanks in part to a lot of play testing on it. The advanced mode is for players that want even more control while flying around in the Hawk. It’s just like Warhawk’s “pro mode” flight mode.

Server list or matchmaking?

In Starhawk you have both. Matchmaking is good for casual players that just want to be put into a game quickly, or for when we need to enforce that players are not “cheating” or stat padding or whatever you want to call it. It lets the Starhawk servers control which players get put into which games. That said, our fans LOVE it so we let you browse the custom “non-official” games through a server list. This gives you the best of both worlds.

Is Starhawk’s character camera new?

YES. We got a lot of questions from people that noticed from the video that there was a tight over-the-shoulder (OTS) camera in some of the shots. We still have a normal camera that is further away from the character, although it is a bit closer than what we had in Warhawk. However, this new OTS aiming mode is enabled when you zoom in with your weapon. It gives you a combat choice—you can do your normal run-and-gun at some cost of accuracy or you can go OTS for more accuracy, although you’ll be a bit slower.

Does Starhawk still use weapon pickups?

Hell yes! I was actually surprised that people were worried about this. It was interesting to see the Tweets from people who were scared that we might be going to a class-based load out approach. No! We still have pickups. And getting a weapon is not limited by rank. That kind of thing just doesn’t work for our type of gameplay. In fact, weapon pickups are an important part of Build & Battle. For example, If you want your team to have “snipers,” you can build lookout towers which include the sniper rifle pickup. Or, if you want some heavy weapons, you can build a supply bunker to get a rocket launcher and a shotgun. Now of course we are still in the process of tuning the game so things are always bound to change, but this should give you a good idea of where we’re headed.

Starhawk for PS3

Are there space environments?

100% YES. The outer space environment set that the art team here at LightBox Interactive has put together is really awesome. Super fun to play on and looks great. Some of the elements are still being worked on and we don’t want to show it untill we’re 100% happy with it. But since sooo many of you guys asked, Sony was okay with me at least telling you that Starhawk was not just about terrain battles. :-)

There are a ton of other questions that you sent me and I will answer them as soon as I can, but for now, I wanted to get a little bit more info out to you all! Hopefully I’ll get to see some of you at E3 if you swing by to get your hands on Starhawk! Keep your eyes on the PlayStation.Blog and www.starhawkthegame.com for more updates, and if you’re interested in seeing behind the production curtain a bit, I often post behind the scenes pics of us making Starhawk on my Twitter account @dylanjobe, so check it out!

Okay, that’s really it for right now. Maybe I’ll include a puzzle with my next blog post—I promise it will be more challenging than the stuff I posted for Warhawk :-P

Dylan, I’m hoping you revise the six-axis control idea. I used to play warhawk with the sticks, but after flying pro-flight or normal flight for a long time my fingures cramped! The six-axis aiming in warhawk was gergous! plz put it back. Some aces like me like to use these type of controls! By the way, I hope there’s a mode where it’s starhawk players vs starhawk developers!! :-) and how many times does Mittense own you?

if u call in a structure does the enemy see the green glow???

also can there be an option to join freinds matches via psn name in the XMB (like mw2) it helps create a far more rebust community experience

last but not least can u make a ps3 trophy to kill an enemy with a falling structure???…(it would also be nice if u could name tht trophy after my PSN name– qsk)

YES, the enemy can see the glow of the building that is about to be placed on the terrain.

Starhawk supports some really great community features which we’ll go into in more detail later. But, yes, just like in Warhawk, you can jump into a player’s Starhawk game by selecting their name in the Uplink.

The Uplink is something that we’ll provide in-depth coverage on in the future.

Starhawk has all kinds of cool trophies for Build & Battle — crushing being one of them ;-)

I could not be more excited for this game. Warhawk is one of the most fun game-playing experiences I’ve ever had and I imagine this will be even better. One suggestion: you do kind of need hover mode, unless the Warhawks have some sort of brake that keeps them completely stationary. Otherwise, we’ll be constantly moving forward and attacking non-aerial troops will be next to impossible.

I trust you guys to keep it as balanced as it needs to be, though. Keep up the great work!

Looks amazing! I’m sold. A few questions: Can a player use build and battle as an attack? For instance dropping a bunker on an enemy. And will this feature be available on space maps? Is stat tracking going to be as thorough as in Warhawk? Any dvr components? Like a theater mode that lets you record and share your favorite battles? That would just be cool!

Just a thought: I personally love having a fps view which left me wanting in Warhawks ground game, but I played Warhawk for the flight aspect of the game so it wasn’t a deal breaker for me. I know several gamers who simply aren’t interested in Starhawk because of the 3rd person/OTS view. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the option to change views to appeal to a broader base of players because the gaming community will always be divided on this? Just a thought… Keep up the good work! Can’t wait for the release! :-)

You can indeed crush someone with a building and Build & Battle *is* available in space maps as long as the player is selecting an area where a building can be placed — can’t just have the building float in mid-air ;-)

3rd person is a key thing for us and we never really entertained being an FPS.

1) Dropships? Coming back? They weren’t very popular in Warhawk due to them being Hard-countered by Hawks so I can see how they’d be left out. Just to make the question broader, any DLC vehicles returning? I know APC’s were very popular and useful. The bubble shield is an upgrade now I heard so it may not be the case unless your giving it a complete makeover.

2) Are you guys going to be more generous with points? Like Bad company did, vehicle assists, repair points, assists, piloting spawn points ETC. Also, flag carriers get points for distance or time carried instead of just pick-up and deliver. It might encourage more people to get out of the base and not wait for the flag carrier to die outside the base and get an easy capture?

3) The vehicle garages like the Jeep or the tanks (that you haven’t show yet :D), have been said in the previews to only have one vehicle and long respawn times? I know the respan times are a given, but are the garages come with one vehicle or are there going to be multiple vehicles? (Jeeps garages have 2 and tanks have one per garage…or more?)

    Dylan Jobe's Avatar

+ Dylan Jobe on May 23rd, 2011 at 6:21 pm said:

#1) We’re not really talking about vehicle specifics right now. What we include for DLC will be determined later. We are focused on the core game and once it’s done and we’re happy with it, then we’ll look at what player’s need/want for DLC.

#2) We are doing a much better job with our rank-up pacing. Warhawk’s was pretty brutal. Don’t get me wrong, it will take you awhile to get to MAX but it will feel more “fair”.

#3) Each Build & Battle structure that spawns a vehicle comes with one immediately, and then it takes some time to construct/respawn another one. In Starhawk we allow players to access a control panel on the Build & Battle structure so they can choose to deploy the vehicle or not. This allows players to have a bit of respawn strategy. They can decide to deploy vehicles for themselves or keep them un-deployed so the enemy team can’t take them.

The respawn time for vehicles is something that we are constantly tuning and balancing.

Dylan,

Please keep the ranking system difficult and strenuous. Not every soilder deserves to be a General. That should require blood, sweat and tears to achieve, just like it does in real life.

Please make the airmines you mentioned the same shape and color so they are balanced.

Glad you are wearing pants.

Can you tell us what “special thing” you will be doing for “diehard WH fans”? Also can you tell us your definition of “diehard WH fan”?

So offical servers will not be listed and choosable, only player ranked servers will?

Since you are from Detroit, can you do a fan event here?

    Dylan Jobe's Avatar

+ Dylan Jobe on May 23rd, 2011 at 6:26 pm said:

The MAX levels will still take a significant amount of time, but the rate and pacing of our ranks in Starhawk feel better than what we had in Warhawk.

Can’t really talk about the special “thing” yet because it hasn’t been decided on ;-)

Air mines are visually symmetrical now.

We haven’t locked down which servers show up in the list display. We just need to be very careful to not give stat-padders more ways of gaming the system.

4) I read in another preview that teams are going to be limited a number of buildings, which is completely understandable. What it the limit your shooting for, and is it a hardware/performance issue or is it a problem of balance and over-saturations and abuse of the system?

5) IS having a backround in Starcraft help you with the strategy and skill? I heard you guys comparing Jeep rushes to Zergling rushes and I wondered if you guys are doing something akin to build orders for SC

You may not be able to answer these but I’d ask anyway because I’m so damn interested in your game.

Either way, can wait for your game, and no matter what decisions you make I know you have put a-lot of thought into it. Already pre-ordered Coming from a Warhawk vet, I hope your new studio grows and becomes very successful. Best of luck, I’ll continue trying to get first place on the myhawk dropship category. Thanks for the response on my last question Dylan. Got a few more questions though.

One of my favorite things about Warhawk was that skill and time played were the only things that separated what made someone good and another bad. With the new perks, I feel that they might unbalance the game and cause players with more skill points to have an advantage over someone of a lower rank. I feel that perks like “Build this structure more quickly” owould be fair and impartial but perks like “Fly faster in your Hawk” would be unreasonable. Is this something that you’ve conceded on and will likely tweak pre and post release?

In the video, you also mentioned that people thought you were an ass for being relatively unresponsive; is there anything planned for a community manager/s?

And finally, I remember you said the guys at Lightbox listened to tons of music. What are some of your favorite bands and what is your favorite album of all time and your favorite album as of late?

Sorry about the second essay I just wrote as I know you’re busy, just pretty excited that all this Starhawk news is coming out. Thanks in advance!

and yes Hover mode is gone, if you’re upset about this you’re obviously a Warhawk pilot. Very good balance decision, now Hawks have to respect infantry and ground vehicles since they can’t just maneuver and blasts of at the first sign of danger or damage. My cool, almost certainly impractical, idea: “Space” is how you get form game to game. Every game that’s currently going on is a “planet” The lower latency (ping) games are closer and get further as the ping gets higher. You fly into space to leave your current game and enter a planet’s atmosphere to join that game. Scan the planet from orbit to get the essential info (number of players, game mode, etc.) and then enter orbit to join the game. Can even play out dogfights while in the space lobby with other players so even there’s even action in the “joining game” area.
