Your Starhawk Questions Answered

I can’t believe I’m posting on the PlayStation Blog again. It’s been forever! So what’s new you ask? Well, let’s see, not too much — oh yeah, we announced Starhawk! *cough* Finally. *cough*

The team and I have been wicked happy with the response from the media and the fans so far. Seeing you guys excited makes all the late nights worth it! But, we still have a lot of work ahead of us so thanks for all of the positive energy. We all know a good reveal is just the first step in making our fans happy and we’re looking forward to showing you guys even more tasty Starhawk content and get you more plugged into the Starhawk universe! So the other day I asked all of you on Twitter to send me Starhawk questions that you wanted to get answered, and while we’re still planning on doing a full FAQ post here on the PlayStation.Blog, I wanted to take a few of the questions that were popular and answer them straight away. Here goes:

Starhawk for PS3

Does Starhawk have two flight modes?

YES. Initially we wanted to have Starhawk use only a single flight mode so that all players were unified. We worked a lot on this but ultimately decided that the needs of a newbie player and the needs of a hardcore Warhawk fan were just too far apart and we weren’t willing to make the compromises needed to jam everyone into a single flight mode. So…Starhawk has two flight modes and both are great! The default mode is very simple and great for new to mid-level players (and yes, reverse aiming issues have been fixed). It’s a re-vamped version of our “arcade mode” (but much better), thanks in part to a lot of play testing on it. The advanced mode is for players that want even more control while flying around in the Hawk. It’s just like Warhawk’s “pro mode” flight mode.

Server list or matchmaking?

In Starhawk you have both. Matchmaking is good for casual players that just want to be put into a game quickly, or for when we need to enforce that players are not “cheating” or stat padding or whatever you want to call it. It lets the Starhawk servers control which players get put into which games. That said, our fans LOVE it so we let you browse the custom “non-official” games through a server list. This gives you the best of both worlds.

Is Starhawk’s character camera new?

YES. We got a lot of questions from people that noticed from the video that there was a tight over-the-shoulder (OTS) camera in some of the shots. We still have a normal camera that is further away from the character, although it is a bit closer than what we had in Warhawk. However, this new OTS aiming mode is enabled when you zoom in with your weapon. It gives you a combat choice—you can do your normal run-and-gun at some cost of accuracy or you can go OTS for more accuracy, although you’ll be a bit slower.

Does Starhawk still use weapon pickups?

Hell yes! I was actually surprised that people were worried about this. It was interesting to see the Tweets from people who were scared that we might be going to a class-based load out approach. No! We still have pickups. And getting a weapon is not limited by rank. That kind of thing just doesn’t work for our type of gameplay. In fact, weapon pickups are an important part of Build & Battle. For example, If you want your team to have “snipers,” you can build lookout towers which include the sniper rifle pickup. Or, if you want some heavy weapons, you can build a supply bunker to get a rocket launcher and a shotgun. Now of course we are still in the process of tuning the game so things are always bound to change, but this should give you a good idea of where we’re headed.

Starhawk for PS3

Are there space environments?

100% YES. The outer space environment set that the art team here at LightBox Interactive has put together is really awesome. Super fun to play on and looks great. Some of the elements are still being worked on and we don’t want to show it untill we’re 100% happy with it. But since sooo many of you guys asked, Sony was okay with me at least telling you that Starhawk was not just about terrain battles. :-)

There are a ton of other questions that you sent me and I will answer them as soon as I can, but for now, I wanted to get a little bit more info out to you all! Hopefully I’ll get to see some of you at E3 if you swing by to get your hands on Starhawk! Keep your eyes on the PlayStation.Blog and www.starhawkthegame.com for more updates, and if you’re interested in seeing behind the production curtain a bit, I often post behind the scenes pics of us making Starhawk on my Twitter account @dylanjobe, so check it out!

Okay, that’s really it for right now. Maybe I’ll include a puzzle with my next blog post—I promise it will be more challenging than the stuff I posted for Warhawk :-P

  • Its really good to see your back Dylan, I missed you! Keep giving us updates on awesome games!

  • I heard from 2 friends that the playstation store will be back on by the 24 of this week and one friend said the 31 so sony please get it on like to see what you have on there to buy:)

  • How about splitscreen online? Great feature in warhawk.

  • “I’ve never been good on the ground, so I hope enough attention is paid to the air combat” :( Dylan what about my six-axis question? plz bring it back! atleast for flight modes! Test it more.

  • not sure you’ll read this since it’s on the 4th page but i’ll give it a shot.

you talked about rewarding hard core Warhawk fans, me myself am a general in Warhawk on a different PSN ID then the one im currently using. how will the rewards work if im a general on one account and only a wing leader on my new account ?

  • will there be floating weapon pick ups like in warhawk? cause that was awesome

  • I feel it necessary to point this out, but way to go Mr. Jobe. You’ve answered a ton of comments, something I absolutely know can turn into a job in itself at times. If the Playstation blog ever ran an awards promotion for guest writers, you’d have my vote for “Most Awesomeness”.

  • Are Jetpacks Villa now?

That really made Warhawk better and they don’t get used enough:(

  • War hawk was the first PS3 game I ever played so it has a special place in my heart. I absolutely can’t wait for this! Thanks for all the hard work.

  • In one trailer there was a mech shooting another mech and it took forever for one mech to destroy the other mech if it’s going to be like that then mech battles are pointless and not very fun….

    • LOL — you can’t really judge game balance from the video. I know the shot you’re talking about!

  • Can anybody tell me why less than two weeks from the PSN being restored 2 out 10 lobbies on MW2 are hacked AGAIN? I was hoping this all new state of the art early detection intrusion system would stop hackers from ruining the game. I tried to report the behavior but the website wont accept my capthca response. Nice work sony im very un-impressed. Send moderators in to the lobbies and shut these little *&*$&* down. I’m not going to buy another modern warfare because of what has happened to the previous 2. Hackers shouldn’t be running on the PSN now is all im saying. Stop it short soon and quick before these rejects think they have the upper hand.

  • There needs to be a new air vehicle with hover, to fill that gap. Maybe not as strong as a Hawk, but zippy just the same.

  • Will there be ranked dedicated servers like there was in warhawk ?

  • 199

It’s called a dropship. And no, not as zippy as a Warhawk. They removed it for the sole reason of the hover mode being way too fast and maneuverable. Why would they unbalance the game again?

  • To all Store Complainers,

    A) This was and is not a store update. Point of fact this is an old school gamers dream, talking to a game dev that is mining your comments for in game changes. Lets encourage more of this behavior by not whining about the store to him or others.

    B) The store is open just not for you, surprise. In the immortal words of the Soup Nazi NO SOUP FOR YOU

    C) This game looks sick and deserves it’s own dedicated comment space

Question: Is the build and battle system material driven, as in “collect x amount of space garbage to build 1 turret” etc..? Or is it more like “You have x amount of buildings to place during this game”??

  • Warhawk is still to this day the best online game of this generation. Every time one of my friends got a PS3 the first game I told them to get was Warhawk. Easily the most fun I have ever had with a video game and when I bought it on a whim I never imagined I would have logged 700 hours on it. Bring on STARHAWK!

  • Yeah, yeah, yeah. Blah blah blah. Nice new multiplayer shooter with eye candy and cool features.

Doesn’t mean anything to me until the PS store comes back up so I can re-get all the DLC I lost when my old PS3 crashed.

  • Game looks soo beast! Probably the only game that will get me to stop playing warhawk.
IMO; platinum generals should get BETA first hahahaha.

  • Thanks for taking the time out and answering my questions as well as everyone else’s. I really appreciate the support you showed Warhawk fans during it’s lifetime and the support you’re doing now with Starhawk and in the future.

  • So no hovering? What if you’re high up in the air during flight mode? Can you switch to mech mode? Will you just fall down? I’m bummed to find out that there is no hover mode.

  • ded_in_the_water

I loved Warhawk, and Starhawk brings my favorite thing in video games into it: MECHS! I am thrilled to see this feature in an already amazing game! I will be anxiously awaiting the release of this game.

  • Good read, however I am EXTREMELY disappointed that there is matchmaking in this game I had hoped by now developers would realize that matchmaking just does not work, and even when it does work it’s still a subpar way of finding matches.

Warhawk was one of those games that had server lists instead of MM, and it worked tremendously well. Killzone 2 also had server lists and it worked out great (except the lack of standard ranked rooms). Then came Killzone 3 with matchmaking instead of server lists, and it is the biggest FAIL of all time. I can never get into full rooms, I am always being placed in the same lobbies over and over and over again, I never get the maps I want to play, the teams are frequently unbalanced and lopsided, I get thrown into a match that is nearly over etc etc etc. All in all KZ3’s MM has many significant annoyances that makes KZ3 nearly unplayable for me. Even the COD games have pretty terrible MM too, only reason they work at all is because there is so many people playing.

    Continued on next post….

  • Continued from #208…

Which brings up my next point, MM only works when there is a TON of players from every region, country and state. Starhawk isn’t going to have as many players as a COD game, and just like KZ3 the MM will be the weakest point of the game which may ruin it for a lot people. It doesn’t matter how good you think it is, MM will NEVER be as good as server lists since MM replaces your own choice with a pre-determined set of parameters that are not universal among everybody’s tastes and likes. I want to choose my own rooms, not leave it up to some imperfect and flawed server script deciding who I should play with.

So for the sake of your players, PLEASE include server lists for ranked games. You don’t need to remove the matchmaking, just give us the choice to choose between MM and server lists. PLEASE!!! Leave matchmaking for the newbies who would rather lazily click a button than search through lists, but leave server lists for the more advanced players so we don’t want to rely on failmaking for ranked games. I BEG YOU, do not ruin Starhawk like GG ruined KZ3.

Oh and one last thing, is Starhawk going to have in-game music? I am willing to bet good money the answer to this is NO.

  • This is a game I will actually be looking forward to. Seems very fun and awesome gameplay :).

  • So would I be right in assuming based on what I’ve read that you can’t gain exp and rank up through games on the server lists? If that’s true I’ll be very sad because it pretty much forces the player to go through matchmaking to level up (and if Warhawk is any indicator, unlock new looks for your character).

Another thing I’m worried about is “perks” in the game. Warhawk was so balanced because everyone was on equal footing no matter the level you were at. I’ll stay hopeful though that you guys in Austin can prove me wrong.

  • Nice I can wait for this game. BTW don’t the @$$holes who keep mentioning the PSN store in every article realize that everyone is ignoring you. Are you so starved for attention? The store will be up when it’s up so cut out the crap. You a loud irritating noise that grinds on peoples’ nerves. There is nothing that makes a situation worse then some idiot who keeps mentioning how long it’s been or asking the same question over and over again . Grow up for the love of cake.

  • The game is looking incredible… and that’s from someone who didn’t care too much for the first one (the PS3 one that is).

  • So how many vehicles can we expect in this game? Will their looks/function vary depend on the maps? (i.e. I see the jeep is now a moon rover looking thing, will there be a more jeep-esq looking version on a different terrain etc…)

I must say I am excited as well, your on-going support of warhawk was stellar, so it is great to see you guys once again.

  • Is their anyway, i can download the amazing Starhawk theme song! I absolutely love that theme song, I just wish it was longer..haha.

  • 1st : The store comes back 2morro they say, 2nd : You guys wanted online right? well go do something with your time instead of complaining you sound like a bunch of new borns 3rd : This game looks awesome!

  • Jerometheknight

NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR NEW GAMES WE WANT WHAT WE ALEADY PAID FOR BACK……!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Jerometheknight

I have Warhawk, but I want an update on the PS Store!

  • 1st : The store will be here when it gets here, you know how much content was on there? its going to be a while.

2nd : You wanted online? well go play it and stop whining like a bunch of new borns!

3rd : the game looks awesome

  • Jerometheknight

I have warhawk and love the game. You guys did well for that. I like the idea of Build and Battle in this game but won’t buy this or many other of your PS3 games Sony, because most are dark, evil, hellish games. Perhaps you should remember that not all your customers want Rated M games or dark games… Games like Devil May Cry, Diablo, Hell Boy, inFamous, Dead Nation, etc… Most of which are evil games. Please make family games as well as games like Warhawk.

  • So we will be able to create only unranked games? This is kind of disappointing, but I hope there will be enough variety in ranked servers that will be available to us. The best thing about Warhawk was that we could join dogfight only, land-only ranked servers and I hope this will also be a part of Starhawk.

  • Yo, I logged in to say 1up to the PSblog video interview, it had very good editing.

And 1up for Dylan Jobe for being awesome and replying to a lot of comments. Looking very forward to playing Starhawk next year. Will we be seeing you guys during Sony’s Press Conference? or E3 in general? with some new stuff to announce I assume?

  • I have a question, in online split-screen, can the second player link to his PSN account, instead of just being a guest. I really would love to play split-screen with my brother or nephews and be able to link to my PSN account (and them link to their own accounts) and we can earn experience and everything all the while, unlike being just a pointless guest. Don’t get me wrong, I loved playing online split-screen in Warhawk, but being a guest, really seemed just pointless fun, whereas it could have been way more enjoyable, if i was able to link my PSN account and just rawk it out in Warhawk gaining experience, ranking up with my brother, nephews or friends.

  • Dylan,

I don’t understand your talk of matchmaking being necessary to prevent stat padding. There was never any padding going on in the official servers. I love being able to pick my game based on region, ping, name, settings, # of players in, current score, etc. I don’t want to just get randomly tossed into undesirable situations like every game with matchmaking does for you. Please do not change this about your game. If you want to implement matching making for large parties to pair them up, then okay, otherwise…NO!

  • When is the Sore coming back up? Damn Sony, give us some info about it

  • Dylan,

There seems to be some confusion on the matchmaking / server list. Are you saying that in order to get into an “official” server, it will be matchmaking based, but you can still join a Player Ranked match via a server list?

Are players still able to “host” player RANKED matches?

    Thanks!

  • Matchmaking sucks, please leave it OUT OF STARHAWK!

  • thats nice and all but what about the PS store ?

  • I figured actual space battles would be saved until later, since that will freaking rock! Please show some outer space combat at E3! Looking good anyhow.

  • ummm i can wait but i was jw is there an exact date when the store will be back up

  • hey dylan thought i would repeat an already answered question “can you kill people with dropped buildings?” lol jk

but seriously i wanted to ask you about the “observer cam” you mention at 1:25. is that a feature in starhawk similar to Uncharted 2’s recording feature?

also, are there any in game features that you guys integrated that, you can mention, would help deter “baserapes” besides the buildable shield ? thanks in advance for the answers.

thankyou for warhawk, i have had it since day one and have never regretted playing it. i have 800 hours that i will never willfully take back

  • Hey Dylan, I just wanted to say thanks for all of the replies. It’s obvious that you really care about Starhawk.

  • Dylan,
Can I please be a part of Starhawk beta? I really enjoyed Warhawk for a couple of years but the lag with the player avatars jumping up and down was not much fun. It was very hard to kill them, if they didn’t kill me first.
Please do something about lag and oh yeah, keep those damn stat padders out of this game.
Can I pre-order this game yet?

  • I like the game so far. I hope to see more types of vehicles. How about a tank that transforms into a robot?

  • Why change the camera to OTS? I loved the camera view in Warhawk. The centered third person camera view is definitely the biggest reason why I bought Warhawk in the first place. Very disappointing.

  • @208/209

Complete agreement. The MM will not fit Starhawk. Game still looks sweet. Excited to pick it up in the near future.
