Do you hear that sound? It’s the sound of the enemy approaching your bunker. Only you’ve heard them way before they’ve even seen you and now your commandos are ready to unload. What’s your advantage? It’s simple – the official PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset – the latest addition to the PlayStation 3 accessories family.

Official Wireless Stereo Headset for PS3Official Wireless Stereo Headset for PS3

The official PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset will be available for $99.99 (MSRP) at retailers nationwide this September. Many more of your favorite franchises, such as Killzone and Gran Turismo, were also designed for surround sound audio. Featuring 7.1 virtual surround sound, the Wireless Stereo Headset lets you hear all the minor in-game audio clues clearly, whether you are in a firefight in a first-person shooter game or racing for the checkered flag.

Designed with comfort in mind for hours of gameplay, it’s the perfect addition to your PlayStation experience. Connecting the Wireless Stereo Headset with PS3 is made easy with the included USB Wireless Adapter. Precise volume controls and accessible microphone mute make it so you never have to interrupt gameplay to fumble for buttons. You can easily stay informed about battery status, sound controls, etc. with on-screen headset status updates. On top of that, the Wireless Stereo Headset also offers the highest quality voice chat for crystal clear online conversations. The mic is retractable so you can put it away if you just want to listen to music or play a single player game.

We’re very excited to be able to offer you yet another new way to get immersed in the game. Be sure to keep checking the Blog for more information soon.

  • Wow these sound great! I might just have to pick one of these up. I have a headset, but its madcatz…….and we all know how reliable their stuff is….I had been wanting to buy the official Sony ps3 bluetooth, but I would rather spring the extra 50$ and get these with Surround sound included! Awesome stuff, hope they’re as good in person and they sound here.

  • Wireless USB. I guess you can’t get the kind of high quality you’d want for this thing out of bluetooth, but this is yet another USB accessory that makes me wonder what they were thinking when they cut the number of USB ports on the PS3 from 4 down to 2. They should have at least gone up to 3 for the Slim, putting one port on the back (the PS Eye’s cord having to reach around to the front of the console makes everything look all messy whenever it’s time to use Playstation Move).

Anyway, the headset. It actually looks rather uncomfortable. I see no adjustment for the width of the band across your head, just height. The last time I used a headset with no width adjustment, it was too tight and it gave me killer headaches. I’d have to find some way to try this headset out before I dropped $100 on it, because spending that much on something I couldn’t wear for more than 20 minutes without it causing me to have a severe headache is not something I’d be happy with.

  • …but they’re ugly.

  • Looks interesting. Might consider it for when I don’t want my receiver blaring at times.

  • @477
they should work just fine with bluray movies. idk the specifics but it should work.

  • @484
dude breath. I think you need to learn to live without it.

  • Well ever since the announced Metal Gear Solid 7.1 Surround Sound Headsets were released in Japan years ago, I have been interested in getting a pair, problem was they never released it anywhere else in the world. So I waited for a local version and now Sony has finally started to make them in other parts of the world.

I should be happy right? Sorry but Sony is going to be sad, because Sony took so long to bring out a pair of 7.1 Surround Sound Headsets that several other competitors have come out with better models, of course at a significant higher price.

Now I have to consider whether to get the Astro A40’s or the Turtle Beach PX 5’s, at least in consideration to Virtual Surround Sound Stereo Headsets or wait it out to see what Tritton can come up with. Can they bring out headsets with 6 speakers in each cup for 7.1 Surround sound? By time we hear anything from Tritton I’m sure the Turtle Beach PX 5’s will have gone down in price to at least $149.99 or a sale might occur that I jump on.

Basically in my case Sony waited far to long to release something like this and their not even made with Bluetooth capability. I’m shopping around but sadly not even considering Sony’s 7.1 headsets as an option.

  • @491 It’s like I said in a previous post, if Sony fixes their store, they could sell a lot more of these expensive and bulky headphones. It’s just common sense. I really don’t understand why Sony is acting like they don’t want to make money. You’d think their store would be one of the first things they fix, but not even a word yet on when it’s going to be working. *gasps for breath*

  • i’ve never been impressed by the sound quality of headphones by sony so far, but since they’re branded playstation i think i am more likely to think that the designers got all meticulous on these. or at least, i am hoping.

  • I’m excited for these, myself. I still haven’t picked up a Bluetooth headset, and not only will this accomplish that nicely, but it’ll be great for any time I play late after work, so I won’t have to worry about disturbing my roomates.

I’d say $99 is a pretty nice price, too, especially given the sound quality you’re projecting, the built-in microphone, and the fact that every third-party brand of similar products for your platform (Logitech, etc) are all around the 150 range!

  • Sounds nice. Is it possible to use it with your PC or any other devices?

  • @Boobnoob69:
They’ve already stated that the Store will be up by the 31st, and that they’ll be rolling the missed weeks’ updates every couple days following. The headphones come out in September; the Store being a factor in whether or not they’re able to sell the peripheral (which is a pretty long stretch of logic) is really moot.

    @w1th0utnam3:
That’d be nice to get a reply to! I’d guess yes, since they’re USB, but you never know. Knowing our luck, they’ll suffer the same fate as the Dual Shock 3 controllers: Plug-and-Play with no extra effort for Macs, and some wonky third-party software that’s absurdly finnicky for PC. :P

  • cant wait

  • im comfused … you will heard your output audio thru this? cuz my headset doesnt send the output audio of the game, just the voice. Anyone?

  • Sold!

  • BiezulbubBill69

    I’m SO buying this headset!!!!!

    RELEASE DATE???

  • this is pretty sick as 7.1 surround sound with you’re 2 ears!

  • anything that stops the white noise from the wife has to be good

  • What if I wear glasses? I’ve avoided headsets (use a ear bud) because I can’t imagine it being comfortable with those ear muffs pressing against my frames in front of my ear. Make sense?

  • I’m off to GTA Online… come and get me, beeeches!!! (lol)

  • I think i’ll get the bluetooth headset.

  • not bluetooth, bummer

I just think that defeats the whole purpose *sigh*.

  • So is it wireless while playing games? Or will I have a wire going from my ps3 to my head?

  • It’s definitely cheaper than the PX5… screw it. Might as well pick it up, lol.

  • Anybody else notice the 3.70 firmware requirement (mentioned on the accessories product page). Here’s hoping for some improvements, including cross-game chat, listening to music while gaming, etc.

  • Yet another update that says nothing about their platform still not being 100% operational.

  • I posted this on the idea blog and had an overwhelming approval rate. Since this is strongly similar to what I posted over a year ago….. Can I have a free pair Sony? :)

  • That is a great headset, i’m looking forward to its release.

  • First time I’ve ever commented on the PS Blog, just wanna say, this looks MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE than that Blu Tooth wireless mic. This is a definite must, regardless of surround sound or not. Still, be cool to hear sound in my headphones instead of TV too for that late night gaming. Don’t wanna wake anyone up.

This is awesome. Now we just need the PS Store Sony.

  • So we can expect firmware 3.70 sometime soon with this new headset. Would love to know what the battery life is and how to charge it. Hopefully they used the same mini-USB cable/port. Anyway, 7.1 wireless sound for $99? I’m in!

  • Just wondering… But why does it say Wireless headset when you say it uses a usb adapter? Im just a bit confysed lol

  • hope there better than xbox Turtle Beaches

  • look nice stay with bluetooth

  • ” * Surround sound on the PS3™ requires system software version 3.70 or later. ”
    So a hugh update is coming now 3, 2, 1, …..

  • Consider 1 pair bought upon release!

  • 99$? Sorry, out of my price range. Coordination online is way over-rated, especially if you’re just playing with random players.

  • these look really good, but I’d rather get a headset like this that’s high quality (like this one), but works on Xbox 360 and PS3 since I have both

  • I bet it’s going to be about $200! I wouldn’t care anyways. I JUST WON’T!!!!!

  • OH, WAIT! $99????? I really getting one NOW!!!!!

  • I’ve got Tritton ax720’s but these look pretty nice, if anything happens to my headset I’m gettin these

  • Looks good Sony a bit bulky but something to work with towards future planning. I was wondering if there would be an update with these? Say you bought 2 of them and played split screen online (black ops). Making it able for the 2nd player to get into the communications instead of the second player saying something and the first player relaying the comment then getting the response and the first player relaying the response for the 2nd player. With two head sets working for split screen this communication delay would work a lot easier. Will there be anything to fix this?

  • Okay I saw a post by MidKnight here saying this product could not work and that they are the first ones to come out with a headset like this. And Im sure allot of you are skeptical. But wireless headphones and headsets are not something new in fact I have a bluetooth wireless headset for my ipod and it does work. All you do is set up the bluetooth adapter to the ipod and it plays through the receiver where you can plug in any headphones and viola sound. Now im sure the same principle is used here they simply set up a usb bluetooth adapter to the ps3 and it sends all the data to the receiver in the headset its fairly simple. I plan on buying these for myself in the near future. BTW I dont see a wire I think we all know what that is and an adapter is not the same as a wire just a quick heads up.

  • I think it’s a great idea to finally introduce an official headset, but I’m a bit concerned about the name. Most of the competition calls these stereo headsets with surround technology as either ‘surround’ or ‘Dolby Digital’. I think you would turn more heads if you followed their naming pattern and called it something like “Wireless Dolby Digital 7.1 Surround Headset”

  • i wish i had 99 to get it

  • Can this be used on a pc aswell? And when will it be available in europe?

  • If you also put in cross game chat, that will be end of my 360 as the online gaming choice.

  • nice i go sure buy 1!

  • Day 1 buy. This is amazing.

  • Sir, will there be a soon future update on PS3’s firmware? because when i look at the head sets key features something is written in the bottom saying

” * Surround sound on the PS3™ requires system software version 3.70 or later. Surround Sound does not work with Blu-ray Disc movies ”

big jump eh? 3.61 to 70? might be a big update. ^,^

  • i hope theyre better be better than turtle beaches.
whens the ps store gonna be up???
