Wipeout Your PS3 Opponents On NGP

Rey Gutierrez's Avatar + Posted by Rey Gutierrez on Jun 02, 2011 // Senior Social Media Specialist

As a fan of arcade racers and an evangelist for all things fast, my face melted off with a recent build of Wipeout (working title) specifically built from the ground up for NGP.

Game director Stu Tilley promises the biggest Wipeout experience to date; with 10 new tracks, 20 new ships, new game modes and weapons. My favorite feature and new to PlayStation, is cross-platform-gaming. Load up your copy of Wipeout HD Fury on your PS3 and you’ll be able to race up against seven NGP opponents in online multiplayer sessions. You can mix and match the number of PS3s and NGPs racers however you like, bringing the world of Wipeout seamlessly together with the power of PSN.

Learn more details in the video above, which also showcases how Tilley and his team took advantage of NGP’s touch technology, dual cameras and built-in six axis motion controls. Sure, the NGP may be the new kid in town, but it’s doing fantastic things with one of PlayStation’s legendary racers.

Is this game gonna be any easier on the NGP than it was the PS3?

I don’t know about “easier.” But, having the NGP essentially BE the controller, adds a brand new dynamic to Six-Axis gaming. Especially for nuts like me that prefer racing in first person.

Great stuff, love how you can play ps3 opponents as well! So then I take it it’s pretty much the same game except programmed for the NGP?

I have a question. Will Wipeout for the PS3 get another dlc to include the new stuff from the NGP version? It would be a dumb idea to add new things and add comparable play with two systems.

I REALLY like the idea of cross platform play. Consider 1 additional copy sold!!!
NGP is shaping up super Nicely!!

Hmm. Interesting to see more inter-connectivity. It’s really something that very few people are doing – either game based or system based, it’s nice to see Sony taking a step toward making gaming seamless from home to your hands on the go :)

Does this mean that Wipeout HD on PS3 is also getting getting new tracks/ships? Or does ‘new tracks/ships’ mean ones that are already on HD, but new on NGP?

Love it!?!? I wonder if the NGP or the Vita (?) will have a HDMI output… Presently, I use the AV adapter for my PSP, but it doesn’t do a great job with its RCA and S-video connection. Can’t wait to put my hands on this device!?!? Maybe I’ll go see at Ginza’s Sony Plaza this weekend.

Are some of these games playable only to the NGP, ie Wipeout, Uncharted? Just curious since many of us still own a PSP. I’m going to upgrade but would love to have friends and family play along too.

1) Now we see why Wipeout HD and the Fury add-on were in the “Welcome Back” package. I’m starting to think more and more that it was a marketing/PR stunt rather than an actual make-good pack.

2) Fury better not have ads as mentioned before. I can see ads in a free game, but a paid game (regardless of from where) shouldn’t when someone is paying for it. Even if provided free in this “Welcome” pack, ads would just make it a joke.

Waitaminute…. you can play this on PS3 as well as on PS Vit…I mean ‘NGP’???

Okay, so I have $500 put aside for PS Vi… NGP on launch day (whenever that might be) and I’m seriously hoping that’s going to be enough for the machine and at least one game. Hoping WipEout is a launch title. I still recall purchasing a PS1 on launch day back home in England and getting WipEout as my first game.

I love Wipeout. 2097 was my first PS game, but I lost the series until HD (fave 100%), so I went back, picked up almost every game between. 2048 sounds like an amazing idea, looks gorgeous. Hope there’ll be just a couple more new tracks; lots of things you could do with a hybrid old/new architecture setting. Aerial roads diving down to more familiar tarmac between city blocks, races through parts of the world affected by climate change… Who knows, you might have these covered already!
Also, I’d love to see some remakes of courses from the first games, they’d tie in well time wise. Here’s hoping for that evil jump to hairpin at the end of Valparaiso. Oh, does a return to origins mean energy strips?! I saw a shield %, & numbers under weapons, but that could just be ammo.

…Phew. Need to calm down.

The HD compatibility, just for online? As in, can I only access HD tracks in MP, & same for 2048 on PS3? Or is compatibility purely for HD courses? Actually, guess that would be more logical, no sales otherwise! Speaking of which, guess I’d better start saving up my student loan & living off of beans…

Either way, from the few screens, I’m already drooling. Keep up the amazing work guys. After this, new G-Police plz =D

what new weapons? I have gone to all types of blog sites but can’t get any information on what new weapons are in this game. I just hope they get rid of the leach beam because that weapon was only good for regenerating your shields. Did not slow the enemy ships down and it did not take enough health from the ship to make it worth your while

Hey Rey, when are you going to start doing ‘The Drop’ again? The current playstation store update blogs lack your personality and caring responses.
