PlayStation Vita

Just moments ago during our 2011 E3 press conference we proudly unveiled an incredible 2011 software lineup and amazing new PS3 peripherals, and also shed new light on our highly anticipated handheld gaming device, officially named PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). “Vita,” which means “Life” in Latin, was chosen as the name for our next-generation portable entertainment system because it enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context.

By blurring the lines between interactive entertainment and reality, our goal was to design a device that offered a revolutionary combination of rich gaming capabilities and social connectivity, bringing users closer to each other and closer to their gaming experiences wherever they are. Connectivity was a key objective and our goal was to create experiences and content that would challenge the traditional notions of gaming. It was vital to make a device that was an extension of a user’s entertainment world, no matter where one would go.

PlayStation Vita

Successively launching in the global market for $249 starting the end of this year, PS Vita incorporates a beautiful 5-inch multi-touch organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the front display and a unique multi-touch pad on the rear. Two analog sticks enable a wider range of game genres. Together with the front touch screen and the rear touch pad, PS Vita offers new gameplay, enabling entirely new experiences.

We know you’ve been closely following all of the news since we announced the product in January. With mobile connectivity playing a huge role in PS Vita’s interactive experience, we know many of you have been wondering what carrier will be helping us bring you closer to other users and closer to your gaming experiences on the go. Today, we proudly announced a partnership with AT&T, which powers the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network, who will serve as the exclusive service provider for PS Vita in the United States. By having both Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi models available, PS Vita will enable infinite possibilities for you to “encounter,” “connect,” “discover,” “share” and “play” with your friends wherever they are.

The excitement doesn’t stop there. We believe that 2011 will be a defining year as we usher in a new era of portable gaming. With the official North American unveiling of PlayStation Vita also comes the introduction of an extensive line-up of software for the platform. PS Vita’s launch lineup is a force to be reckoned with, featuring exciting and attractive new titles from SCE Worldwide Studios, including UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss, LittleBigPlanet, and Ruin (working title), which utilize PS Vita’s groundbreaking technology to make unprecedented immersive, interactive and social game play available on-the-go. In addition, titles such as Little Deviants, Hot Shots Golf, Reality Fighter, Hustle Kings, ModNation Racers, Wipeout, Super Stardust Delta and a broad range of third-party game developers and publishers make use of PS Vita’s unique feature set. We can let all of you know that the biggest and best 1st and 3rd party gaming franchises will be coming to PS Vita.

Further enhancing your entertainment experience are new PS Vita features, such as “LiveArea,” an interactive space for each PS Vita software title that allows you to access the latest game information through PlayStation Network; “near,” a pre-installed application that lets you see what other PS Vita users in the vicinity are playing; “Party,” which lets you voice chat or text chat while playing games or using the Internet browser; and “Welcome Park,” a tutorial application designed specifically to guide you through PS Vita’s new user interface. • Really you people are buying into anything Sony after the PSN fiasco. I mean really the only reason the store is up is so Sony won’t get laughed out of E3. Watch the network go down soon after E3. Sony won’t care cuz you are all lining up for their new paperweight.

  • THIS GAME IS FREAKING SWEET!!!! IS AMAZING!!!

  • Golden Abyss :D

  • @419

Later on, a network provider in your country will say if it supports PSV or not, in my country, for instance, the iPhone (lol) is only provided it by a certain network, it’s just a matter of time until other networks start giving support for this product :D

  • eh atleast you guys didnt cut the ram and priced it 399 um keep at sony

  • AT&T?! Are you out of your friggin skulls?! I left AT&T Because they were a horrible cell carrier! What makes you think I’m going to pay 250 dollars to go back to them. And what about UMD Games. I have over 2 grand invested in my original PSP Games. You going to let us have flash drive copies of them? Otherwise I’ll have to carry 2 portable devices around and that aint happening.

  • Have to say looks like a great device. Too bad you went with AT&T though since they really are lacking in the frequency phase modulation form of telecommunications. Hopefully they don’t drop gaming connections like they drop phone calls.

This was clearly just another attempt from AT&T to try to gain a quick monopoly on a new technology (like the
I-phone) to attempt to make a few people switch from the much better, faster, and more dependable Verizon. Just a gimmick. I will be sticking to the Wifi version of the device as I never want to use AT&T again.

  • $250 for an amazing handheld. I will definitely be getting it!

Is there any word on the canadian carrier for the vita?

  • Im so happy they got it down to 250 hopefully the PS Vita will kill the 3ds in sales.

  • AT&T really? Oh well, PASS

  • AT&T is extremely reliable so that makes me happy.

  • BTW… any idea about built in hardrive space?

  • The_Fallen_Hero_

does it really matter for another hand held?

  • Are we going to have to pay for the 3G as we use it?

  • Sweet, I’ll try to get the Wi-Fi version.

  • Take that 3DS, Sony always wins! Again, take that!!

  • InsideBurningIce

I’m just hoping that it comes out before black friday or there’s an amazing discount sometime soon. But that’s actually not a bad price Sony. Way to go!

  • Another thing, I was told that you can play downloadable PSP games on the PSVita. Is that still up in the air?

  • I was wondering if you could give us a month the psv will come out.

  • at&t sucks, but that’s not a problem for me. 2 words; MOBILE HOTSPOT. good thing the droid has it.

  • Sounds great! I can’t wait to get the wifi model. I’m guessing you chose AT&T for the GSM network so that we can intermingle with other people globally? I was thinking about getting an iPhone 5 with Verizon and possibly tether it to the PSV, I’ll wait for someone to confirm this. Anyway, keep up the great work Sony! I love the launch titles you have at the moment. I would like to see PS+ integrate with PSV sometime in the future.

  • Day one for me. Couldn’t have asked for a better price either since I was willing to pay up to $399 for it.

  • i have a question, what if you have UMD’s but then you get the ngp, if we give you the UMD, will you give us the memory stick for the game( i saw some pics that the games are in memory stick form or something like that) what will i do with the UMD’s when i get the NGP!?!?!?!?!

  • Okay seriously guys, Sony didn’t even thing trading UMDs in for Downloads was a viable idea when they were trying to get the PSPgo to sell, just let it go. Play the PSP games on a PSP around the house when you want to play them and take the Vita out when you want to play while traveling. The cards you’ve seen are for storing new content and for the media they’ll sell in stores in place of UMDs. UMDs were out classed by SD and other solid media early in the PSP’s life It’s cheaper and easier to just sell the game on them rather than the little disks and use spinning drives that can break over time.

  • I actually have a question as well:
What amount of internal flash memory will this ship with? 16GB, 32GB, 64GB or something else entirely?

  • they should remake the jak and daxters for this thing!!!

  • Thsi is amazing! Leave it up to Sony to continue being innovative and releasing great Hardware. With great games announced so far, this is going to take over the Handheld market. So long Nintendo!!!

  • to repeat #29

  • death_by_wabbit

wow! that’s a lot cheaper than I thought it would be! time to finally retire my PSP 2000

  • Instant buy!!!!!! DO WANT NAO!!!!

  • Men i can’t wait to get my hands on PS Vita so bad, its like bad machine to have. If you Sony guys have prototype you don’t want no more let me know i love to have one that is prototype. Gaming Media card is cool too, i saw were it go in to and i think its great way have its designs. Sony you are godly when it comes to designs and from my point of view PlayStation is great System to have in your home and for the go. I took my PSP with me every way on the go from the home to school and now to other cool places. PS Vita love the name to it & Hardware is impressive on the system of PS Vita.

    Peace Out :) Sony :)

  • Is there any video that shows the web browser, ps3 psp web browsers are the worst, if this vita has the same browser or even if its made by the same company i wont even consider it. will 3rd party software install on it and will it be able to stream video from any web site.

  • Scott, given the Wii U controller announcement my first reaction was Vita can do the exact same thing as Nintendo is trying to do. Any plans on making the Vita work as a controller on the PS3 and 4?

  • OuroborosChoked

I at least hope that THIS portable Playstation will be able to support more than just low-end WEP/WPA wi-fi security and will support some of the more up to date 802.11 standards. My PSP’s wi-fi capabilities go COMPLETELY UNUSED because I refuse to lower my home network’s security just to use it.

  • I’m gonna sell my psp and all the games, work hard in the summer and get the cash for this thing, its a great deal!!! only $250? i thought it was gonna be $300-400$. I’m getting this the second it releases.

  • WHY AT&T????? WHY?????

  • im buying it 3ds is now gonna get it’s ass kicked by the psvita

  • Lil_Mermaid_Girl

I have to say the name is terrible. I mean most people don’t read blogs or forums much and keep up with stuff like this, so most people aren’t going to know vita means life in Latin. It’s just going to sound odd. Sounds like a girls name rather than a new high tech gaming system’s name. Why not of just called it PS Life?

  • Finally the Nintendo fans cant argue about the price.

  • @492: Lol I think vita souns odd too.

  • @478: whats cross game chat? Is it like sombodys playing gt5 and sombody else is playing lbp but they can still talk to each other?

  • will there be MP 4 uncharted golden abyss?

  • this is a must have also with them coming out in different colors I just hope data plan isn’t more than $10-$15 a month

  • Hell yea sony messed uo b4 with the network but this almost completely made up for it. I already got my preorder in. THANKS SONY

yep just keeping up with the tradition for the past 2 years that we’ve implored for this feature. any word other then “it’s being considered”

or are you gonna keep quite like you did for 2 days while my account info was in the wild? (see what I did thar)

  • PS3 CROSS GAME CHAT

for those who don;t know what this feature is: yes, it allows users to talk while on different games. wtf would you want that for? well imagine playing the same single player but now you can talk to your friend who’s also playing the same game as you going through the same levels together… or how about exiting a multiplayer game leaving your team behind and checking your browser for some tips or FB updates only to then return to your game all while in the same chat room… or how about games that have poor or limited chat integration like BC2, you can now chat with your entire team instead of just your squad, perfect fOr clan matches…

we’ve begged for this for years and not a damn Fing word on it is really upsetting to say the least!
