PlayStation Vita

Just moments ago during our 2011 E3 press conference we proudly unveiled an incredible 2011 software lineup and amazing new PS3 peripherals, and also shed new light on our highly anticipated handheld gaming device, officially named PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). “Vita,” which means “Life” in Latin, was chosen as the name for our next-generation portable entertainment system because it enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context.

By blurring the lines between interactive entertainment and reality, our goal was to design a device that offered a revolutionary combination of rich gaming capabilities and social connectivity, bringing users closer to each other and closer to their gaming experiences wherever they are. Connectivity was a key objective and our goal was to create experiences and content that would challenge the traditional notions of gaming. It was vital to make a device that was an extension of a user’s entertainment world, no matter where one would go.

PlayStation Vita

Successively launching in the global market for $249 starting the end of this year, PS Vita incorporates a beautiful 5-inch multi-touch organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the front display and a unique multi-touch pad on the rear. Two analog sticks enable a wider range of game genres. Together with the front touch screen and the rear touch pad, PS Vita offers new gameplay, enabling entirely new experiences.

ATT

We know you’ve been closely following all of the news since we announced the product in January. With mobile connectivity playing a huge role in PS Vita’s interactive experience, we know many of you have been wondering what carrier will be helping us bring you closer to other users and closer to your gaming experiences on the go. Today, we proudly announced a partnership with AT&T, which powers the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network, who will serve as the exclusive service provider for PS Vita in the United States. By having both Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi models available, PS Vita will enable infinite possibilities for you to “encounter,” “connect,” “discover,” “share” and “play” with your friends wherever they are.

The excitement doesn’t stop there. We believe that 2011 will be a defining year as we usher in a new era of portable gaming. With the official North American unveiling of PlayStation Vita also comes the introduction of an extensive line-up of software for the platform. PS Vita’s launch lineup is a force to be reckoned with, featuring exciting and attractive new titles from SCE Worldwide Studios, including UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss, LittleBigPlanet, and Ruin (working title), which utilize PS Vita’s groundbreaking technology to make unprecedented immersive, interactive and social game play available on-the-go. In addition, titles such as Little Deviants, Hot Shots Golf, Reality Fighter, Hustle Kings, ModNation Racers, Wipeout, Super Stardust Delta and a broad range of third-party game developers and publishers make use of PS Vita’s unique feature set. We can let all of you know that the biggest and best 1st and 3rd party gaming franchises will be coming to PS Vita.

Further enhancing your entertainment experience are new PS Vita features, such as “LiveArea,” an interactive space for each PS Vita software title that allows you to access the latest game information through PlayStation Network; “near,” a pre-installed application that lets you see what other PS Vita users in the vicinity are playing; “Party,” which lets you voice chat or text chat while playing games or using the Internet browser; and “Welcome Park,” a tutorial application designed specifically to guide you through PS Vita’s new user interface. • $250=Perfect day one buy. Time to get rid of my PSP go. Will miss the portability but this thing is just to sexy. Plus all my games will transfer. Can’t wait. Also this having ps3 graphics hopes thing has a 32gb built HDD atleast

  • The name is a liiiiittle iffy.

  • Deathspank Vita or Death would be awesome lol

  • I think having PSVITA across the bottom of the device seems distracting to me and maybe other potential buyers. I propose that just having it say VITA, the PS logo on the home button is enough to be aware it’s a PlayStation hardware. Sure the new buyers might not know but I believe the PlayStation brand is huge enough for people of the intended audience to know of it :)

  • im not tryna be a hATER but are u guys stupid or jus all kids thats 2 high 4 a hand held gm i kw about the attributes but still the ps3 is 299 im mean jus something to think on people

  • awesome looking forward to buying vita on day one, can’t wait to upgrade from the psp go going to use the go as an internet phone and radio for the house. lol
I loved the name NGP as it rolled off my tongue ever so smoothly
slowly learning to say PS Vita…weird…but good job sony

  • Sony I want to have your baby. It looks so pretty and cool. You just face palmed Microsoft. FACE PALM!

  • I am ABSOLUTELY SOLD!!

though the name PS Vita sounds like a health food ahahaha XD

  • Everything sounds great but AT&T?! Really?! I would have bought the 3G model day one but now I simply won’t. I would have even switched carriers to Verizon or T-Moble to get it but I will not pay to have [DELETED] service and support that everyone knows AT&T provides.

  • Please make Media Go mac compatible, pretty pretty please!

  • Well they made cross over chat for Psv But no ps3 Dam sony your epic but hey im still buying that not much of a cellphone person so ill get the wifi pSv

  • Well, It seems to be promising..
But, To make the “Vita” better, TWO WORDS: APE ESCAPE.
No remake, A real time sequel.
    Make it happen sony!

  • Some_Black_Guy12

You know what all of you sit at home know bodys can go suck it! why did they pair with AT&T? because AT&T is Better than the other suck buck companies… i had a verzion phone for about two years and it was a droid and it sucked so hard i was paying a butt load of money for verzion crapy service and switched back to AT&T which was and still is better…. Verzion and other users can go and Suck it! PSV+AT&T= Duh WINNING!!!

  • This is my first time posting here, I just couldn’t stay quiet on this one. 1) you went with the name Vita (disgustingly close to Vista)?! 2) Do you realize how many more iPhones would have been sold if they weren’t so dead set on AT&T? How much are they paying you to have only them as a service provider? 3) I don’t even know what these people mean by cross game chat but i may as well whine with the crowd. Otherwise it looks solid and a decent interface, good work on that rear touch pad. Acceptable price, but how much is the wifi only model? Until you guys get with Verizon, all I care about is the wifi model.

  • When is the release date? Most likely a Day 1 purchase for me.

  • Cant wait to pre-order this now. But I wish it wasn’t on at&t. Definitely will be getting the 3G/wi-fi version anyway

  • Where’s the Cross Game Chat for the PS3?

  • I would love to know how many people that are saying, NO to the 3G model because it’s on AT&T, have actually been on their network, I would really like to know. And also know about GSM networks. And it also depends on where you live. Some people get better ATT coverage, and some people get better VZW (Verizon) coverage, again it’s where you live.

And to all the people that don’t know, there is more GSM service in the world than CDMA. I would love for some of you people to try to take your Verizon phone (some Blackberry’s excluded) on a trip to Europe and try to use it, you won’t. But if you are on ATT (and T-Mobile), take your phone all over the world!

Not an exact number, but basically 75% of the world is GSM. The other 25%, CDMA, is mostly only in the US. So, why would Sony make a device that doesn’t work with most of the world? Also, ATT is the largest GSM carrier.

  • Important Idea:

Hey SONY! You gave me an awesome idea that you could definitely take advantage of…you should work out a deal or team up with (I don’t know how all that business works) all or multiple phone companies and create some kind of chip that you could insert into the psv, and ps3 for that matter, that would allow gamers to choose their service provider and possibly spark a revolution in mobile internet service. It could work just like the usb antenna’s that some phone companies already have, but more compact for gaming devices. YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY DO THIS…because not everyone likes AT&T… :)

  • Day one. Thank you for the price point and the launch titles are looking like amazing games. Can’t wait to see the games down the road. Awaiting more detailed information about PSN integration and applications. I am already sold.

  • AT&T is horrible definitely sticking to wifi only. Sony ya blew it on that one.

  • Cant wait to get this baby in my hand !!!! For canada wich service will take care of this i hope it will be Bell. Anyway i hope we will have news soon.

  • Sweet spot.

  • It WILL be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine. TWO even so my boy can get in on it too!

  • @BIGCHILLIPORKA O.O
    O

  • tried to make surprised face…:O there

  • Is the PSVITA 3G/Wifi will be able to use regular wifi or just the 3G connection from AT&T? If would be able to use both I will buy it the first day XD

  • Pros: Price
    Cons: AT&T
    CONS: Name

luckily, that pro far outweights those cons. If we could(mostly) stop making bathroom jokes about the wii…Vita will be fine

Got to say am solidly impressed with the pricing, the 3d tv i’m thinking of picking up to replace my monitor or possibly turn it into a dual screen set up and be able to use the ps3 with it as well. Have to wait until it’s in stores and get to lay my eyes on it, but sony could be getting an extra $800 from me i wasn’t expecting to have a desire to spend this morning ;p

  • Does anybody know with how many GB the system will come with?????

  • it was great till they announcement of att for the 3g partnership. come on sony should of looked at apple for clue on why people don’t like att. i dont have verzion im t-mobile guy but even i know verzion has great service and better connectivity than what att provides. either way im sure the vita will sell after its a reason price for a change though if you think about it is about the same price as a ps3 now, but on the go.

  • Great presentation & great price. A couple of questions:
1 – Will games support trophies?
2 – Any news about the Canadian provider?
    Thanks.

  • Wi-Fi model for me, perfect price point.

  • AT&T is the same as Verizon, neither one is perfect, and those saying one is better than the other are blind to the truth. Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean others do. I’ve had great service through AT&T, but doesn’t mean their perfect, Verizon maybe good for some, but others may have bad services with them. Every Company has flaws and if you don’t like it, then don’t act like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum because they didn’t get their way. Be a mature person, grow up and deal with it. Nothing in this world is perfect. And it’ll never be perfect.

Besides, fair is fair, Verizon got the Xperia Play, AT&T gets the Vita. One’s a phone that plays games, the other just plays games. It’s fair share to both customers, except Sprint, which gets left in the dark by everyone (No iPhone or Xperia Play or Vita), I don’t see Sprint customers whining, only Verizon, tells me Sprint customers are more Mature than Verizon. So Verizon customers I say this, Grow Up and deal with it.

  • VITA SEEMS LIKE A WEIRD NAME

  • i find it funny that the vita does more than its papa lol

  • @264 yes, yes it will

  • Can’t wait to have one in my hands. Not impressed with the name but what has been shown makes the name disappear. Can’t wait to see more.

  • Lets be honest here – paying 300 USD for a 3g enabled device is pretty crazy considering you will be paying maybe 20 dollars a month thereafter just to use the 3g, beit AT&T in the states or someone else here in Canada…no cell phone provider will just give you free data.

The 3G version is a lot more expensive than 300 dollars.

  • i definitly gonna buy this awesome machine dood! AT&T definitly not good Dood! but ah what the hell u will be mine Vita xD

  • Great Price and I will be getting it but AT&T are you kidding me!? I have Verizon and I just got the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play so I could play PS games and I was hoping Sony would follow suit and make it for Verizon. Bad move Sony!

  • these round menu icons looks terrible like cheap chinese cellphones…

  • I like pie…

  • NOT COOL AT&T, I dont really like AT&T either but as long as you dont have to pay monthley fees to use their network im going to get the 3G version, im sure you can always turn it off. Of course not paying a fee toward AT&T seems highly unlikely

  • RIIIIDGE RAAAACER!!!

  • i also feel like there should be more than one service provider so people could choose themselves. and its kinda annoying people complaining about no cross-game chat on ps3 when the vita isnt out yet, its gonna happen around the same time if not sooner.

  • Is it me or when they said AT&T did I hear a BOOOOOOOO… I have an iphone and I’m dumping it in 2012.. I hate the dropped calls problem.. Even when I’m calling on their M-CELL device, it still drops calls… I don’t like AT&T also because they cap the data to 2 gigs,. and 4 if you don’t mind spending $50/month.. on top of your voice plan and text plans..

  • Great price, even though I have a feeling the memory cards will be extremely expensive. But the AT&T exclusivity is a joke. AT&T has about the worst possible network. You’re gaining a general sale from me at the $249 price but I absolutely will NOT buy a 3G version (Which I likely would have if you had partnered with ANYONE else).

  • Dear Sony, AT&T Sucks… Please Go Verizon or T-mobile or Sprint, Thanks!!

    Seriously, WHY AT&T???

  • i thought it would cost at least 400 bucks but wow Sony really impressed me. im buying this the first day it comes out. but i think AT&T was a bad choice (well for me and a couple of others out there but thats not m y primary concern. Good Job Sony

  • I can’t believe Vita will have cross game voice chat before the PS3 ever does. What the heck?! Other than that minor problem I have, I thought Sony’s conference was pretty spectacular. Thank god they ditched the charts & pie graphs for more game footage. Also, $250 for Vita?! That’s amazing! I never thought they’d get it down that low. This low price point will open Sony to a broader audience for sure! Uncharted 3 looks jaw dropping! All in all, this was a fantastic conference & probably the best in years. I also look forward to seeing how Move is integrated into user creation games. Really really cool stuff!
