PlayStation Vita

Just moments ago during our 2011 E3 press conference we proudly unveiled an incredible 2011 software lineup and amazing new PS3 peripherals, and also shed new light on our highly anticipated handheld gaming device, officially named PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). “Vita,” which means “Life” in Latin, was chosen as the name for our next-generation portable entertainment system because it enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context.

By blurring the lines between interactive entertainment and reality, our goal was to design a device that offered a revolutionary combination of rich gaming capabilities and social connectivity, bringing users closer to each other and closer to their gaming experiences wherever they are. Connectivity was a key objective and our goal was to create experiences and content that would challenge the traditional notions of gaming. It was vital to make a device that was an extension of a user’s entertainment world, no matter where one would go.

PlayStation Vita

Successively launching in the global market for $249 starting the end of this year, PS Vita incorporates a beautiful 5-inch multi-touch organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the front display and a unique multi-touch pad on the rear. Two analog sticks enable a wider range of game genres. Together with the front touch screen and the rear touch pad, PS Vita offers new gameplay, enabling entirely new experiences.

ATT

We know you’ve been closely following all of the news since we announced the product in January. With mobile connectivity playing a huge role in PS Vita’s interactive experience, we know many of you have been wondering what carrier will be helping us bring you closer to other users and closer to your gaming experiences on the go. Today, we proudly announced a partnership with AT&T, which powers the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network, who will serve as the exclusive service provider for PS Vita in the United States. By having both Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi models available, PS Vita will enable infinite possibilities for you to “encounter,” “connect,” “discover,” “share” and “play” with your friends wherever they are.

Ruin for PS Vita

The excitement doesn’t stop there. We believe that 2011 will be a defining year as we usher in a new era of portable gaming. With the official North American unveiling of PlayStation Vita also comes the introduction of an extensive line-up of software for the platform. PS Vita’s launch lineup is a force to be reckoned with, featuring exciting and attractive new titles from SCE Worldwide Studios, including UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss, LittleBigPlanet, and Ruin (working title), which utilize PS Vita’s groundbreaking technology to make unprecedented immersive, interactive and social game play available on-the-go. In addition, titles such as Little Deviants, Hot Shots Golf, Reality Fighter, Hustle Kings, ModNation Racers, Wipeout, Super Stardust Delta and a broad range of third-party game developers and publishers make use of PS Vita’s unique feature set. We can let all of you know that the biggest and best 1st and 3rd party gaming franchises will be coming to PS Vita.

Further enhancing your entertainment experience are new PS Vita features, such as “LiveArea,” an interactive space for each PS Vita software title that allows you to access the latest game information through PlayStation Network; “near,” a pre-installed application that lets you see what other PS Vita users in the vicinity are playing; “Party,” which lets you voice chat or text chat while playing games or using the Internet browser; and “Welcome Park,” a tutorial application designed specifically to guide you through PS Vita’s new user interface. 2011 is sure to be an epic year for us here at PlayStation. We’re always looking for ways to create compelling experiences for all of you and we’re very excited to bring you unparalleled gaming experiences with PS Vita. Let us know your thoughts and looking forward to having you try out PS Vita for yourselves!

  • Your kidding me Att? How do you make the dedicated to VERIZON and turn around and mKe this awesome device for att? At least let us know it can do other networks as well and turn those obvious BOOOOOS! (When att was mentioned) into more cheers than anything.

  • Dedicated experia to verizon i meant

  • Add me on PSN if you have RE5 and are willing to help me beat it on normal. And give me all the ammo if you already beat the game once :D, the main ammo I need is handgun and sniper, possibly shotgun. I beat the game two times before, but formatted my PS3 each time, and now I want to do it a 3rd time ( not going to format pS3 again ) so please, add me “AzzeTo” ONLY ADD IF YOU HAVE A HEADSET

  • But not compatible with previous psp UMD titles so therefore useless :-( such a shame really

  • Quiero que se pueda conectar a la Tv…como el PSPSlim….o me tengo ke esperar a que salga el Playstation VITA Slim?….o Playstation VITA Go?….

  • I hope that you guys noticed that Kaz said he will provide more information on future 3G providers in the future, right? Anyways definite day 1 buy for me (Most likely thru Amazon to avoid the crazy stampede at actual retailers). The Vita (You guys should have stuck with NGP.. It was catchy) looks like it will be amazing. I can’t wait to see the other future launch titles will be!

ITS BEEN ON THE FRONT OF THE BLOG SHARE FOR TWO YEARS AND YOU DO NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im really dissapointed in sony right now.
is it really that hard to add?

  • will it use games like the frist psps are all downloadable like pspgo

  • This may be a bit off-topic, but can someone confirm for me that there is no VOD in the US? I have a US account, but live in Spain. We have VOD here on the Spanish account. I always assumed VOD didn’t show up in my PS Store because I was overseas, though I have managed a way to get Netflix here. Just curious.

  • is nice, is it CDMA or GSM lol don’t ask me why :p , Can i make a phone call hahahaha….

  • Seem like a nice handheld i will buy it for sure but this time i won’t make a mistake 3 times in a row i buy a new handheld or consoles(3ds,psp and ps3) on starting date and after it’s for a few months it’s only good enough to accumulate dust.
And the way i see it now i don’t really want any of the launch game so i will wait a few months until the PSV have a few good games before buying.

  • Playstation please answers!
Is it region free??( selling point for me)
Can i sign in to multiple psn accounts like on ps3? (it would be nice since i have to do that on ps3 to get dlc)

  • After Sony’s partnering with Verizon for the Xperia PLAY, the decision to use AT&T for the 3G provider on PSV makes little to no sense.

Sony, people hate AT&T, something I’m sure you’re astutely aware of now (Kaz looked like he’d just been gut-shot when those “boo’s” rose up).

Their services are sub-par, at best, their pricing structure is terrible and their 3G is some of the worst in the country thanks to the unwashed masses and their damn iPhones.

I’m sure this was decided long, long ago and the contract with AT&T lasts however long it lasts, but I can’t but feel that after 6 months or so plans will be available on other carriers.

Look through these posts, and the posts on every other major gaming blog. No one cares about the 3G model, a truth you can attest directly to the fact that everyone is sick to death of AT&T and their awful service.

  • @shades909

    Uncharted: Golden Abyss
    Wipeout 2048
    Street Fighter X Tekken
    LittleBigPlanet
    ModNation Racers
    Bioshock

If none of those interest you, what the hell are you doing here?

You know what, nevermind, you’re right. Those are all crap.

    *shakes head, walks away*

  • When Sony makes one with the features they originally said the NGP would have before they went on a cost-cutting spree resulting in less ram, no HDMI output, etc., etc., I’ll buy one. At just under the price of a PS3 console, this “light” version just ain’t worth my time or money.

  • that-acmilan-guy

Device with tech filled to the brim and priced absolutely right, can’t wait. Question: Is 3G model only supplied by cellular companies or will it be available retail as well?

  • Will there be trophies?

  • Nice price, probably going to get it for Christmas though. My only complaints: No new monster hunter outside japan, and not so catchy name, would have preferred PSP2, just saying… hope the messages from PSN can be received in this device as well as in PS3

  • Yea. At&t isnt really bad of a company. Verizon and At&t are basically the same. Ive done buisness with both of them. But im gunna get this for sure.

  • Why didnt they keep NGP thats what Ive known it as for a couple months why change it now?

  • @mykallin: It was its codename, and was only ment for in company use.

I like the new name over NGP anyways. And Im glad they didnt name it the PSP2 for a couple of reasons (like the fact its a new product and you dont need to keep calling everything new after the old). Anyways, the price isnt too bad (would have liked to see it 50 bucks cheaper honestly) and I would still like to know the cost of games on the device. But as far as the tech goes, I think sony did a great job giving the devs. all of the right tools and the devs did a fantastic job incorporating the tech (like uncharted’s touch screen usage mixed with buttons as to not force the gamer to use either).

  • Looks like I got something else to add on my christmas list. Awesome Sony, I’m a Sony fanboy, I’ve owned all the playstation consoles and soon to be handhelds instead of handheld. I also believe that the PSV will be disc based like the PSP (not the go. I never wanted the go thanks to the download only thing that ticked me off since I had to buy a new one because my Slim’s analog nub broke and bought a 4g PSP model instead of the go because then I’d never be able to play the games I already bought and not all the games I have are available for download on the PS Store) I’m not crazy about it being called PlayStationVita, but me, and other people will get over it if it is just as powerful as the PS3, and Hopefully it does has PSP compatibility so when more games come out we go out and buy them. I’d buy Bioshock and maybe Uncharted but then that would be it until a title came out that I’d like to play. Anyways Great Job Sony, I’ll be looking forward to this new Handheld.

  • Awesome performance last night guys, just shows why sony continues to be the best. Love it!!! great job.

  • i cant wait to get my hands on it

  • @49 Thats what you get for buying a go

  • Price is lower than expected, good move! I expect Nintendo will be forced to do a price drop as the holiday season comes near, they don’t like their competition being the same price.

The Vita is defiantly going to be my choice in the handheld market, I can’t even use the 3D in the 3DS (lazy eye). However, I will not be buying one until you have new games (not PS1/PSP titles) in the turn-based RPG genre. So just a hint there ;)

Like many others have said, AT&T is the worst choice you could have gone with. They offered you the best deal I’m sure, but that’s only because their service is so bad they have to in order to survive.

  • As soon as psn said the letters AT&T my focus went to the PS 3D bundle. Anything with ATT means problems and headaches with a large dose of poor customer service!

  • battery life?

  • Great job Sony with the console,it looks great.
But with all good consoles, down sides happen:

1.The name Play Station Vita…..ok if it`s foreign and it means something(I believe it`s Spanish)that`s fine, but the name pisses me off!
2.Like KazeEternal said:AT&T=Bad Idea,I moved away from AT&T for the same thing.
3.The price needed to be cheaper than the 3DS,dude that`s your damn rival,it has to be cheaper, better and a wider selection of GOOD games.

  • Wow… very cool!!! 8~)

  • alien-workshop-

It sucks for people who don’t have at&t like me…but I’m still gonna get it…the whole design looks awsome ,

  • I like it!!

  • One please :D

  • Jerometheknight

Sounds cool, price ok. probably could of had everyone for $300 before the hack / PSN down-age.

Glad we are switching to AT&T…

Is this like better than PSP? Cuz if so, I can finally afford and get a PSP. = maybe/ Cuz I hate sony but love their products… kinda like Apple… CHOICES!!!

  • NGP was a better name …and i might get it if you guys at sony can find a way to get a T-mobille version lol ..i dont mess with AT&T

  • AT&T was the worse possible carrier you guys could have chosen. Didn’t you learn from Iphones learning mistake of going exclusive AT&T to start with? Im sure this is a long contract with those clowns too…..smh

  • Gonna be a real B&@ch fest when connections are getting constantly dropped with AT&T. It IS gonna happen…

  • $249!!!!! are you F’n kidding me?!?!

    for $50 more i can get a New PS3 and a Game.

whatever i already lost my faith in Sony, none of my friends are on PS3. I think my next console is of other manufacture. sheesh.

  • good e3, but how about an announcement for google tv on ps3 or play tv….i really want my ps3 to be the media hub, dont make me buy an xbox just for the live tv option. other than that great price on psv will be a day one purchase. what are the specs will it have built in memory?will it take sd cards?

  • sold!!!! i thought it was gonna be more expensive , price is great !!!! im debating about which one to get , i wanna get the 3G version i hope its not mandatory to get contract with AT&T , perhaps you guys can work something out to bring the service to other companies , loved all the games !!!! Uncharted looked extraordinary for a handheld , playing wipeout Against ps3 players while im on the go , AMAZING !!! , Ruin looked really good too but the ways you can play Little Big Planet on the system was the most amazing thing of all and on top of that 4 players online !!!!
i wanted to see new games but perhaps you guys are saving them for GamesCon or TGS , anyways good show , not great because you guys didnt show what are we gonna be playing in 2012 , you mostly show the games we are gonna play this holidays , i wanted to see Agent or Final Fantasy Versus or Kojima dream project , none of that was there , what happened to The Getaway 3 and Eight Days ? i know Heavenly Sword is not dead yet

  • mastorofpuppetz

Anyone else dissappointed? Sure Vita looks gret, way better then MS, but that wasn;’t hard. But, where were all the PS3 games? No God of War? Syphon Filter 4? New metal gear? Gt5 news, updates? Last Guardian? No RPG’s again? Ps3 is all action titles, and barely anything new announced. Other then vita a boring, poor showing.

  • mastorofpuppetz

@#@$ are u for real? 249 is the sweet spot, sames as the 3ds, everyone is prasing the price point, get a clue. Go to the xbox and its lack of games, dvd player and crappy electronics and leave this blog.

  • hey playstation how about pulling some strings and sneaking nfs the run in as a launch title us nfs fans would love it because a console cant survive without an nfs title it simply cant

  • is it out ???

  • SOLD!!!

I may just end up getting the 3G version, if PSN on this thing is robust and worth looking at even when out!

  • I would love to get this. My poor wallet this year.
