“I have a great idea for a game….”

If you only knew how many times producers hear those words it would honestly amaze you. We hear them all the time and we have to try our best to get excited about the words that follow that phrase. When we (Sony San Diego Studios and Idol Minds) stopped building PAIN expansions those words were music to my ears… Okay, what’s next?

When I started working in games 20 years ago, I worked as an RPG designer/tester. So when we decided to make a social action-role-playing game you KNOW I was on board. When the decision was made to make it a PS Vita product I got even more excited. Even among the nerds here in San Diego Studios I am branded nerdy. So making a game based in fantasy is right where I want to be. RUIN (Working Title) will be that fast-paced action-RPG that I have wanted to build since I first played old-school action-RPGs.

There will be some unique differences. Social networks and constant net connections make your victories (and losses) more public. The ability to talk, trade, and compete allows your dungeon-crawling exploits to be seen by everyone. Building a lair as well as a character will be a welcome addition. Rivalries will also factor heavily in RUIN (Working Title). It’s not just about winning it’s about making others KNOW it.

Oh… and how cool is it to be able to play RUIN on your PS Vita or your PS3? Just like we showed in our press conference, you can save your game on Vita to the cloud, go to your PS3, download that save file, and continue the exact same game on PS3. That’s what we are calling cross play. Save anywhere and resume anywhere, on either system. That’s pretty exciting stuff!

I’m sure you have lots of questions but rest assured we’ll have many more details to unveil in the near future so stay tuned for more news.

I have a great idea for a game!

  • Dang this looks really fun can’t wait to play it and start building my own master dugeon. but I have a few questions, 1st off how much customization is there over all as in characters ,weapons, and dungeons, 2ed Is there a story mode or AI dungeons to get you started, and lastly are 2 game purchases needed to play across both PSvita and the PS3 one seprate for each? or is it like a bundle buy the PS3 version and get the PSVita version free/ or discounted. And good live demo of the game at the pressconfernce.

  • Requiring a player to buy both a PS3 version and a Vita version in order to cross play = Instant Fail.
Very few people will ever find it appealing to buy a game twice let alone the possible requirement to be a PS+ subscriber just to use the cloud save feature to pick up where you left off in your duplicate game. As it stands the PSN allows us to buy PSone and PSPminis that not only play on the PS3 but also PSP. When there is already a precedent set for this type of content sharing suddenly asking people to pay up for what appears to be unnecessary is going to draw a lot of bad blood since Sony keeps pushing this notion of how easy it is for the Vita to run PS3 code. Seriously rethink this strategy guys.

  • so do we buy the ps3 game and get the psv game too. or do we have to buy seperatly ( which would stink)

  • We don’t have to buy the same game twice, do we?

  • #30, Come on, the title READS “Action-RPG…” Of course I’ll like a deeper, a Bioware BG type game but this is more in the Dungeon Hunter/Diablo realm…

  • ThreeLeggedFreak

This looks like a poor man’s Diablo 3. Can be either good or bad

Also, do we have to buy 2 copies of the same game? If so, FAIL.

  • This is just amazing, I can just the see the future of games like this. Imagine FPS, RTS, and more playable on Vita and then on PS3. Maybe cross-play with each other!

  • So if you want to play on your PS3 and PSV do you need to buy the game twice?

  • I was on the fence about the PS Vita until this. Bring It On!!!

  • Yo Trav,
Long time no post since PAIN blog. Pre-ordered Vita today. I can’t wait to add this to the list. The cross compatability with cloud saves was Sony’s best moment at E3 in my opinion.

  • Already you can buy PS1 games for use on both PS3 & PSP, also many mini’s are both PS3 & PSP-able.

Since they want to let us continue from console to portable visa versa, it wouldn’t make sense to separate things into two $$$ parts for the super loyal PS people that do have console and portable both. FWIW

I’m also concerned with how the PSP uses games so differently from the console (who paid for each game) and hope the PS Vita solves this problem (in our family there is NO way we will have portables and have to pay for each person to have a copy of the game, plus the issue of how trophies will work. It sure won'[t work under the current scheme of activating via purchaser’s psn account.

Anyhow, I like the look of this game, and so does the other main PSP user in our family, and we are the two who will definitely get PS Vita’s for Christmas 2011 [the only way it’ll work for us :( ]

  • hey guys from RUIN, hey Travis Williams!

Im really interested in this game, looks like a really fun actionRPG, I havent played one since Baldursgate Dark Alliance! (well played a bit of untold legends)
HOWEVER the thing that made the game Baldurs Gate Dark alliance so good on the ps2, was the co-op game!

SO my question is will there be a co-op mode??? cuz this would be THE reason to buy this game!

    keep up the good work!!

  • Will I have to buy both the ps3 and psv versions of the game? Because I don’t think it’s worth 100 bucks for 2 versions of the same game just so I can save it and resume it.

  • Why is everybody being so stupid? You don’t pay twice to play it on separate systems. Anyways I’m so looking forward to this when the PSVita comes out. This is the first I’m buying before Street Fighter x Tekken.

  • the graphics look great?

  • it kinda looks like god of war 111

  • …Not that i don’t like the concept of this game and all, because I am looking forward to buying it when I can (hopefully near Christmas……otherwise I’m screwed), but would it be too much to try and talk Blizzard into doing this with Diablo 3? Being able to port your character from pc (and possibly ps3) to psv for total and utter annihilation over Battle.net. I’ve been a Diablo supporter for over 10 years now, and the wait for D3 has been killing me. however, it would be so much more worth if if i could play on the go. I have AT&T, and would have no problem getting the 3g version if it meant i could do that. I highly doubt i’m the only one who would love this as well. Not that i wouldn’t still play this, cause i totally would. I’m an epic multitasker. On my pspgo, i play about 5 games at the same time. i could do the same with this and Diablo 3

  • hey the games looks amazing it defiantly gonna be one the the first games i buy when the vita comes out few questions:

will their be any open world elements eg not fighting in dungeons?
any 1v1 only fights in say an arena?
is their gonna be a trade system with friends and other people online?
Is their gonna be any dlc items and customization for characters?

  • Its look very very good imo.

  • I believe it is a very valid point that we shouldn’t have to pay twice for the same game. What i would like to know is, does this thing play UMD’s or what? Will i be able to sell my PSP to soften the blow of this new little device or will i just have to pull the money from where the sun don’t shine?

  • Looks to me like it’s more of a hack-n-slash than an RPG, similar to Untold Legends on the PSP. I do love a good hack and slash though, so I’ll probably buy this.

  • Please convince Sony to add TV-Out to Vita! And the ability to use a PS3 controller like PSP Go did.

  • Can’t wait I want it now
