E3 Replay: Scott Rohde Answers Your PS Vita Questions

The most talked-about PlayStation product out of E3 was, and continues to be, PS Vita. Yes, the hardware is impressive – especially at the starting price of $249 dollars. But – as is always the case – it’s all about the games. Fortunately, Vita looks set to launch with a plethora of big names and innovative indie games.

Who’s responsible for ensuring an awesome PS Vita launch lineup? People like Scott Rohde, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Studios Product Development at SCEA.

In our E3 interview, Scott Rohde talks about the making of Vita and the flexibility of the platform. It’s safe to say that fans of traditional button-and-analog-stick controls will be satisfied, all while incorporating innovative new interfaces like the back touch panel.

I’ve got to say, I love working for a company where a senior vice president doesn’t wear a suit. Like, ever.

  • does anyone know release date??

  • I want fruit ninja on the Vita!!!

  • 2 things that are bothering me:

    1. Can you control the Internet, the new UI and other apps with the back touch panel, so the finger doesn’t obscure the front screen?

    2. The new UI. It’s an interesting way to control the PS Vita but for the main screen, having lots of panels of bubbles can make traveling and selecting different apps a chore.

  • Will games such as Uncharted,Infamous, and Red Dead Redemption be available for the vita? Also will i be able to keep and use my old psn account?

  • Also will you be able to use Youtube? And will the vita have memory built into it or will u have to buy a memory card like the psp?

  • Yeah, seriously. I have four PSPs (including a PSPgo) and I’m not getting it until it has some sort of video out feature. I don’t get it. It’s been there since the PSP-2000, and it’s been the main reason I’ve stuck with the PSP instead of that other non-Sony handheld. Now it’s like they’re taking a huge step back. I can only assume you can watched videos from the PSN video store as well, so not including video out seems like such a waste.

I’ll still buy the games when they’re on sale, though…

  • Thanks for update..

  • Is there gonna be a Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank or a Jak and Daxter game for the Vita? If so all would be a day one purchase for me.

  • I am getting more and more excited for the Playstation Vita! and I am curious if you guys would show us some more info on BIOSHOCK FOR VITA please :)

  • Yes psvita will be integrated with your ps3 trophies, I am totally getting one!!!

  • ONE!!!! thing if the psvita is more power full then the xbox 360 then why haven’t we seen ps3 games like infamous fallout or the new ssx or even uncharted 3 on the vita or even a port of uncharted 2. sony really needs to get the developers going, i have not seen one ps3 port

  • @Octavius_33 Hey, I was just curious! I don’t NEED it, I was just wondering if Sony was placing the Vita as an alternative to phones, ipods etc considering it’s versatile multimedia functionality. e.g Many people like to listen to the radio on their phones. Why bother if you can use your PSV instead?

  • LOOKS AMAZING! Already saving for it!

  • what size are the memory cards going to be available in.

how much are they going to cost.

will sony make a adapter so the m2 mini can fit in so we can use some of the memory stick pro duo we already bought.

  • sweet are their going to be difrent colars?

  • the realse date is desember 31 right?

  • if u put cross game voice chat on the vita will u put it on the ps3?

  • Since the PS Vita is getting the Party Room, is the PS3 getting it as well?

  • Already reserved mine at GameStop 3 days ago!!!!!!!!!

  • I think that’s a good place to start answering some of these questions….the post says questions ANSWERED..

  • I’ve already saved my money for this. Getting this bad boy at launch. I hope Sony makes enough of them so that we don’t have shortages.

  • Will there be a MAP/Navigation GPS app?

Can you use it as a bluetooth device to answer calls while driving?

Can you tether for a data connection via Iphone/blackberry/android phones?

Can you use your vita as a controller for the PS3?

What Video and Audio formats will be compatible?

Can it be a DLNA media server and output to a DLNA TV?

Will it have a Web Browser and will it support the latest Flash?

  • Not wasting money on portable gaming……Had a psp and everything BUT the gaming was cool……DS is king of portable gaming….Thats just the reality we have 2 face

  • 250 is a bit steep suck it Vita

  • So… The design is now absolutely final?

Hmmm… I was hoping there’d be a way that the controls would slide behind the screen like the PSPgo, so it’s at least pocketable… Because there it’s rather large, and, the joysticks might get caught on something and break.

    :-/

I will probably wait this one out, and wait for a refresh or something in a year or two…. Even though I really want one, and all of my PSPgo games will work on it…

  • Alright, im sure this question has already been answered. but will i be able to play PSP games that i have already downloaded and played on my PSP, on my PS Vita? (when I get one of course)

  • @bobtelco What would be the point of using it as a bluetooth device for your phone? chances are its much bigger than your phone, so you might as well just use your phone! just sayin

  • Ok so i saw that it comes in wifi only and wifi and 3g. What is the main deference between the two, other than the 3g. And do you have to sign a contract with at&t to have the 3g if you dont already have a contract.

  • I’ll consider getting one if they make a new NHL game or make NHL 2007 a downloadable game, until then i’m stuck with UMD’s.

  • Threemusketeers3

    Cool

  • SONY, I already reserved and pre-ordered the PSVITA. I have a question, what kind of memory card or stick will it be using? Also, can I put my UMD disc games like PEACE WALKER on there and be able to play them? Please respond. Thank you.

  • Oh, and could you put all of the METAL GEAR games and Assassin’s Creed games on there, that would be great!!

  • i saw the features on the psp vita and its similar to the ps3 and their a microphone bulit in or you can use a bluetooth headset.this would be cooler if the if MW3 and BF3 was for this or other new shooter games.

  • OK first off can i watch netflix on it ? and another thing why the knew name ?

  • when can i get one ?

  • I am a huge fan of the PSVITA already… and with its release I truly hope that the select games that had not previously been available on the PlayStation Network will begin to flow on there. KazeEternal used crisis core as his example, and i know that very few Square Co. titles have been released on the store, and i understand that they were not originally in support of porting their games to a digital format. I would be greatly devastated if I was unable to get my Square-Enix Members Registration codes, and selling in the digital format can generally effect the sales of other titles… and their are many other reasons… However, the titles for the PSP are generally among the best selling titles the handheld has had, along with God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and other Gaming Icons. It would greatly devastate many of the hardcore fans to lose the play-ability of these greatly recognized titles.

  • Also many of you are asking stupid questions… “will i be able to log into the psn using the same account?”

Aren’t you doing that now? on here, and the psp. what makes you think its going to be any different?

And I believe they do have an HDMI out component in the system using a mini HDMI out cord, it goes directly into the bottom of the system.

I agree with whoever proposed the data rates Questions. Will their be an unlimited plan, because many downloadable games are huge.

And my biggest desire relating to the 3g is the option to pay through the psn, and not have to ever enter an AT&T store…

  • LOL, that guys hand tattoo doesn’t look sony at all….

  • Does the ps vita allow you to use youtube? I heard there will be skype. Is this true?

  • 1. ALL THE DETAILS OF 3G!!!!! Will you have to have a seprate contract? How much will you pay? Do you even have to pay at all? Will it be a 2 year thing or a monthly fee or what?

    2. Which of the following buttons will the PS Vita have:
    L1 R1 L2 R2 L3 R3

    3. I heard that there will be some sort of voice chat thing maybe from the XMB menu? Will you be able to talk while on a game?

    4. Will it have Skype?

    5. How do you “Save to the Cloud”? What’s the Cloud?

I think thats all & I will post more questions if I have them.

PS: For Christmas I am either getting PS Vita or a Nintendo 3DS. I havent even looked at the 3DS yet though…
I am pretty sure I am getting the PS Vita!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Will Gran Turismo 5, 6, etc. be on Vita?

  • MrTechno612’s answers:

    1. I don’t think you’ll have to pay. I’m unsure.
    2. L1 R1
    3. XMB is now LiveArea. probably will be able to talk during game.
    4. Yes.
    5. I have no idea.

  • i wish ps vita had 3g on verizon and not just at&t

  • 80 titles are to be developed for the PS Vita. Now that is how you start a gaming system.

  • Can I use PSN cards on the VITA?

  • I mean PSN gift cards.

  • nom nom nom vita!!! Despite the best advise of my fellow gaming circle I believed that the ngp held promise not only at becoming a core part of handheld gaming industry and putting certain cell phone manufacturers back in their rightful place. But also at revitalizing SCE to it’s former glory like in the days of the PS2 when they commanded respect from the industry, and more importantly the consumers themselves.

  • Every new ps3 should be made to play on both the Vita and the ps3, it might be easiest for PS exclusives but if call of duty could do it too thatd be awesome to play the same people online, on the go, and the back touch pad should be used for R2.
