I’m finally buying a new PS3 later on in the morning after almost 5 months since it stop working. This update better not mess up my PS3 when I just bought it.
Every since I did this new update, I’ve been having issues with playing Mortal Kombat. It’s not much of an issue, but the game / fight announcer ” Shao Kahn” doesn’t say certain words during a fight, like “FIGHT!” or “FATALITY!” or “ROUND 2” or even “Flawless Victory!” It’s like they are skipped during the fight or missed.. it’s weird!
Does anyone have this issue also?
I just updated restarted and now I can’t see the XNB so I’m stuck without a ps3 until the they fix the update. Please fix it. :'(
Update seems to be okay. i just played a few matches on Uncharted 2 and it worked great with a great connection and no lags. all my friends were playing different games and they seemed fine as well. So you guys can update knowing it seems to be fine for me and my friends at least.
Cheers Sony! Any chance you could make an adult-only version of the blog? It would be nice to read a few posts without all these kids trolling because they haven’t got cross-game chat.

I’d like to know when Dead Nation will be patched as it was one of the freebies, and the online is beyond atrocious with immediate disconnects and just bad netcode.

It’s not really whining when most people are complaining. If you think they’re so few then you should click the playstation.blog.share tab in the top left corner and check out the top entry with 34,000+ votes with 25,000+ being positive votes. It isn’t worthless if more people want it. The larger the demand, the more the worth.
I could care less about that. I’d rather get the ability to do music during games. That’d be a nice update. But it really isn’t that important as I can play sound through my computer and speakers anyway.

@277 – If you haven’t kept up with the PS3 hacking “scene”, there has been no official PS3 hack since 3.55. Firmwares 3.56 and up to date have been unhacked and no custom firmwares have been created for them. Firmware 3.56 was released on January 27th, so nearly five months ago. To add to this, Firmware 3.60 is reported by this same “scene” to have completely changed how the PS3 operates, thus making it even more difficult to hack. To add even more to this, firmware 3.61 seems to have locked custom firmwares off of PSN including the dev networks they found access to before.
The only reason I know this? It’s kind of funny to watch these “hackers” squeeming for nearly five months realizing that new PS3 games are being coded around 3.60 like Portal 2 making it completely unplayable on earlier firmwares. Recently Killzone 3 and Gran Turismo 5 launched patches with similar requirements meaning if those “hackers” download these new firmwares for those titles they’ll be unplayable on their hacked PS3s.
Hopefully Sony keeps devs running with these same requirements for future titles. I’m sure Sony has already seen results so far as many “sceners” have given up on new CFWs and updated to OFWs.
Is this going to fix the 3.56v1 HDD error bug that Sony cause and refuses to fix?

I’ve got to say at first glimpse the PSN services in general seem to be loading a little quicker. Seems as if my friends list and all store categories are caching faster than they were before. That’s a big plus. Here’s to hoping this fixes some of the Playstation Home problems that have been occuring as of late…
On a side note, would it be possible to release more folder options in a future firmware update? Sub folders would be a nice addition. I recently upgraded my HDD to a 320 GB from a 120 and already have over half of my HDD filled and am constantly creating new folders for video and game content to make finding items easier instead of having to dig through up to dozens of items in one folder. Being able to add sub folders for content would help as then I could have a say… Family Guy folder in my video side with sub folders for different seasons.
Would also be good for games as right now I’m seperating by PSN games, Retail Games, SEGA, Move, and a couple other folders. Being able to have a Move sub folder under PSN and Retail Games would make finding content a bit easier and really help to make my XMB look a little less cluttered.

I’ll just bet 99% of the folks who want cross-game chat, are so chatty they already have cell phones, but are so lazy theyll let them just sit there so they can instead talk to their friends on PSN? Your chatting on PSN=U have bluetooth. Disconnect it off your ps3 and link it to your cell phone, call your friend(s). WHY would sony want to bog down PSN with your BS about what suzie’s wearing, when u KNOW u already pay for a phone to do that with? WHY do u want to talk to someone playing a different game? WHY would u want PSN to run slower- so u can call laggers cheaters to justify why ur losing? WHY would u pay for a device to sit there and do nothing while u game?

If its that important to voice chat, use the voice chat already in the PS3! I find it hard to believe that you can play one game, your friend(s) another, and there’s STILL something so pressing to discuss that u have to cry to sony about it, but not so pressing as to actually STOP playing to discuss it. See, its just a bunch of blah, i dont want my psn bandwidth wasted on your blah and if have to start muting a bunch of kids, Im going to cry to sony until they remove it. 24000 votes? I bet i get twice that many votes to remove it if it does get implemented! Think Sony knows this? They do now!

I love how some of you guys think we don’t need cross game chat or think it sucks and only kids want it.
i’m 24 year old adult, and I would greatly benefit from this. Since I’m on youtube with a few friends making videos, this would help us play games and have fun recording instead of using skype on the PC to use this. Grow some brains people, you may call yourselves adults but not once do you not understand how important a feature like this would help.
Now yes the PS3 has very low amount of ram to use this function correctly but someone posted something earlier that makes a good point: take out the useless crap from in game XMB we can’t even access in game, this would greatly reduce the strain on the ram and might make it possible for this to happen. Better yet, like someone else said, complete overhaul on the XMB as it’s terrible and it’s clearly causing alot of problems for people and beneficial upgrades for GAMERS!!!!

Dear Sony, PS3 is a gaming console. a GAMING CONSOLE not some device that you can just add useless features for. How about for firmware update 4.00 you completely overhaul the XMB, bring in cross game chat, revamp the entire trophy card system. I’m just writing this to clue some of you in as to why some of your requests will most likely never happen. The first one I like to address is faster in-game XMB. Theres a few reasons this will not happen but to understand why you need to have a basic understanding of the the PS3’s CPU. As you all know its a called Cell Broadband Engine and its made up of a one Power Processing element (PPE) and eight Synergistic Processing element (SPE). The PPE is more of a general processor meaning it can do your more basic math equations. (equations that end in a solid number) Where as the SPE’s are more suited to handle floating point equations. (this in and math equation that ends with a decimal point in it) Now when you boot you PS3 the XMB is running off the PPE which is more suited for the kind of tasks. But when you bring up the XMB in game the PPE is most likely handling things like enemy AI in a game. So this task is handed off to one of the SPE’s that Sony keeps reserved to do extra tasks like this. The SPE can do general tasks but to give you an idea the SPE can only handle one or two general tasks at a time. While it can easily handle several floating point tasks at once. This is why your XMB is slow in game.

As far as Cross Game Chat goes. In theory it can be done but would be much harder to implement. First off when you talk in a game on PSN just like XBL you have one set of servers that is running game data and a second set that is running voice data. No matter what game your playing your voice data always goes to the same set of servers. The difficulty on the PS3 is in the way is handles this process. When your playing on xbox 360 the systems Operating system (OS) is always running in the background. One of the things is handles is the voice protocols. On the PS3 there is a OS running in the background how ever it is a very lite version of it. The PS3s CPU is just not as powerful in the general tasks as the 360. This does not make it a bad CPU there just two different beast’s with different priority’s. Because of this the chat protocols are handled in the game code. For Cross game chat to work on PS3 this part of the code would have to be overridden. And I imagine that sum games would start to have issues running correctly when this is done. So I hoped this bring some of this to light.

I have watched this blog without even the single utterance of a word,For six months the whole commiunty has gone tit for tat about everything.My speaking is for cross game voice chat.Not for kids not for you for my self.A day one playstation,before dual analog and ape escape I was underground.I would like this for me and I believe I can speak for all 89 of my friends(thats why i got them)when I say I would be great and to we the people it is a showing that we are cared for and happy.It would be lovely to have a system such as this one to operate to its capabilites and (((potential))). When games come out people buy them some dont.some still play what they got and to be able to keep in contact with friends via cross game voice chat they can tell me about theirs and i about mine.This in game messaging thing is stupid and some games you dont just pause to awnser a question because you cant.It takes others sometimes get a person interested and SONY that means you too.
