The day has finally come and we are ecstatic to have released Outland on the PlayStation Network. Many of you first heard of this platformer/Ikaruga mash-up when we first announced it at our Digital Day event last year and got a deeper dive when PlayStation.Blog’s Sid Shuman gave a quick preview from PAX East 2011.
The idea of the game is simple: you are following in the footsteps of an ancient hero looking to prevent the destruction of the world at the hands of the goddesses of chaos. However, mix in the polarity switching and you have one amazingly challenging game.
Housemarque, known for their work on Dead Nation and Super Stardust HD, has been receiving a ton of praise on Outland, including 1UP calling it “one of the best downloadable games this year”. Let’s take a deeper dive into the development of Outland:
Music fans are in for a treat; starting today for a limited time, eligible Playstation 3 owners* can try out a Basic subscription of Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for free over the next 180 days.
The timing couldn’t be better – the service’s Android App also launched today, so users can enjoy music on the go with their compatible Android mobile device or on a number of other Internet-connected Sony devices including 2010 and 2011 models of network-enabled BRAVIA HDTVs, Blu-ray Disc players and Blu-ray Disc Home Theater systems as well as the PSP and personal computers including VAIO personal computers.
The cloud-based, digital music service gives music lovers streaming, commercial-free access at anytime and anywhere to an ever expanding catalogue of currently over seven million licensed tracks from major labels including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Music as well as leading independent labels and major publishers worldwide.

When id Software releases a new IP, it’s more than a big deal — it’s an event. The veteran development studio behind classics such as Doom and Quake is preparing to unleash its next big shooter, Rage, this October. And at E3 2011, the storied studio presented a wildly diverse group of missions from the post-apocalyptic adventure to try out on the PS3 version of the game.
First things first: Rage looks fantastic. As id Software’s graphics guru John Carmack recently stated on Twitter, Rage may very well surprise gamers who expect the PS3 version to play second-fiddle to the PC version. Rage is one of the sharpest-looking games I’ve seen in a long time, with the developer’s new id Tech 5 engine really stealing the show. Walking around Rage’s post-apocalyptic wasteland should seem like a gloomy experience, but the game’s slick visuals and smooth-as-butter animations and framerate incite awe more than anything else.

For those who followed PlayStation.Blog last week, you might have seen Jeff, Sid, Rey and I hosting live interviews and demos with the developers and executives behind the biggest games and announcements of E3 2011. This week, we’re uploading those videos to give you an ever so slight idea of what it’s like to travel through time. Now, let’s revisit that heady day of last Thursday when I spoke to Mick Hocking, our resident 3D expert, on what we can expect from the future of stereoscopy and how it will impact gaming, and I ask that ubiquitous question — why don’t we have glasses-free 3D TVs yet?
Stay tuned throughout the following week for more E3 Replays.

I’d like to personally thank those of you who tuned into to our E3 livestream at some point last week. While we’re still poring over the final numbers, a quick glance reveals that there were millions of you – far exceeding our wildest estimates.
Many of you asked if we’d be replaying the segments, since it’d be difficult to be available to watch everything live. The answer, of course, is yes. Starting now.
In this first replay, SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton chats with me about the “state of the union” of PlayStation, and tells us why he’s “more excited than [he’s] ever been about a platform launch” with PS Vita.
June’s Episode 37 is electrifying with previews of the season’s hottest titles packaged up in a sweet new user interface. The new design is streamlined to better present all that each episode of Qore has to offer.
inFAMOUS 2 is this month’s lead story as Audrey Cleo ventures deep into New Marais to reveal Cole’s shocking new powers. Meet the new characters, explore the dense environment, and learn more about the very, very cool user-created missions feature.
Then, prepare yourself for a journey through the looking glass with a preview of Alice: Madness Returns.
Earlier this year, the PlayStation.Blog team approached us about creating its first-ever developer diary series, focusing on various elements of Resistance 3. After discussing it with them and the Resistance team at Sony, we were all really excited to collaborate on this project. The dev diaries will cover a range of topics across the game, and will roll out as we get closer to Resistance 3’s launch date.
They are also special, as they were the first videos to be shot in the Resistance 3 war-room that some of you may have heard us talk about in various interviews. While we’ve taken special care to ensure that the backgrounds aren’t legible, you can get an idea of the main room at Insomniac that lays out the entire R3 single-player campaign experience.
