Role-playing fans are in for a treat this week when Dragon Age: Origins arrives as a digital download on PSN, followed by a kill team 40,000 strong and a modern refresh of the classic coin-op shooter Galaga.
Have you been keeping up with the EVO World Finals this weekend? Our Sid Shuman is in attendance, where last night the talk of the town was an 8-year old Marvel vs Capcom 3 prodigy who blazed his way through to the quarterfinals. The most exciting matches will happen today, and you can stream it live in PlayStation Home.
The PS.Blog weekly reading list (Week of July 25th, 2011)
This weekend, I’m on site at the “World Series of Fighting Games,” the EVO Championship Series, located in fabulous (chaotic, disorienting) Las Vegas! Top fighting game champions from around the world have gathered to duke it out in Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Tekken 6, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat, plus a host of other niche fighting games, culminating in a nail-biting series of finals Sunday night. Luckily, PlayStation Home users can watch the battles live for free. Not a bad way to spend the weekend!
In addition to the competition, Capcom and Namco Bandai are showing off upcoming fighters such as Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 to the throngs of hungry fighting-game fans. I’m hoping to score some interviews with Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono and Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada, among others. Keep your eyes peeled for the results this week on the PlayStation.Blog!
Need for Speed: The Run is the boldest departure for a series known for its laser-like focus on fast cars and tight driving mechanics. For the first time in Need for Speed history, you’re not a nameless, faceless driver; You play as an actual person named Jack. And Jack is facing tough times. “He’s a marked man,” explained Product Manager Darin Perfonic in a hands-on showcase last week. “He’s got serious problems with some guys who want him dead.”
Those “guys” are actually wiseguys — the Mafia. And Jack’s last, best hope for survival lies in entering The Run, a sprawling 3,000-mile cross-country race from San Francisco to New York City. With a cool $25 million for a first-place finish, The Run represents Jack’s last chance for salvation before the wiseguys find him and settle Jack’s debts.
Since the launch of inFAMOUS 2 there have been over 50,000 UGC missions submitted, 4.8 million UGC missions have been played totaling over 300,000 hours spent in those missions. A new UGC mission is added at a rate of one per minute and two UGC missions are started every second! Check out the map below and you can see where missions are being added in New Marais.
Speaking for the staff of Sucker Punch Productions, we’ve been astonished by the creativity and variety of your creations! We want to spotlight a couple of the missions that have really impressed us, all of which can be found on the Sucker Punch Featured list in-game.
Ready to get your daily dose of intense combat action and destruction? We have good news then! Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team is coming to PlayStation Network and will be available August 2nd in North America for $9.99.
In this third-person arcade-style shooter, players take on the role of an elite Space Marine team sent to assault a giant Ork Kroozer en route to an Imperial Forge World. Do you have what it takes to take out the Warboss and prevent the WAAAGH!?
All week long, I’ve had this strange tension in my shoulders. I was hunched up, and was even having trouble sleeping. As Comic-Con came to a close, I couldn’t figured out the source of my weird aches, until I finally realized: it’s EVO time.
EVO is the World Series of Fighting Games, and it’s this weekend, July 29th through the 31st, in Las Vegas. EVO has been running for over a decade, and has grown from a small gathering of friends into the biggest fighting-game event on the planet, with thousands of competitors and fans attending from dozens of countries (46 countries are represented this year!). The best of the best come not only to win prizes, but to claim a place in fighting game history, to earn a name, and to test themselves at the highest levels.
Hey guys! Comic-Con 2011 just wrapped up this past weekend so for those of you couldn’t make it to the show, I wanted to share a highlight reel from our Starhawk panel discussion, which took place on Sunday in San Diego.
The panel, entitled…”The Evolution from Warhawk to Starhawk: The New Universe that is Starhawk and the Characters Behind the Conflict,” detailed the creative process that LightBox Interactive and SCEA’s Santa Monica Studio has gone through to make Starhawk a reality, including the development of an all-new story and the establishment of main character Emmett Graves.
