Hideo Kojima Talks Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Peace Walker HD, PS Vita

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for PS3

These days, Hideo Kojima is a busy man. The Metal Gear mastermind recently revealed that the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is heading to the PS3 this November. The HD Collection includes revamped versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, complete with dual-analog-stick controls, 1080p graphics, smoother frame rates, a redesigned user interface, rumble support and much more.

We caught up with Kojima last week at an appearance in Mexico City and he was eager to speak with PlayStation.Blog readers. Enjoy the Q&A, and leave your favorite Metal Gear moments in the comments!

PlayStation.Blog: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was designed for PSP — a portable device. What changes did Kojima Productions make to the upcoming PS3 version so it could be enjoyed on a high-definition home console?

Hideo Kojima, Director, Kojima Productions: The PSP obviously has fewer buttons than the PS3 controller, and it had some limitations when it comes to control. Using the DualShock 3, movement of many things improved…as did, of course, [the addition of] rumble support.

On the PSP, it was also hard to tell some textures apart. Now, rendered in HD, they are much easier to see. The in-game text is also easier to read.

PSB: Your process of “transfarring” will allow PSP players to take their Peace Walker save files from one console to another, and we will also see similar cross-play support with the PS Vita and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Is this the future of gaming, and would you like to explore beyond what already has been announced?

Kojima: Peace Walker is the first step. It is a PSP game in HD that lets one go back and forth between one PSP and a PSP. The next step is to take PS2-quality games, such as Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, to HD and then to take them to Vita transfarring.

My next step is games that will come out for the PS3 from now on, so I can take advantage of this technology with the Vita with content that is exactly the same. I hope that cloud service is available now, and it would be ideal for me if transfarring were to serve as a bridge between the two services.

PSB: Just before E3, a glimpse of what will be its new graphic engine (FOX Engine) was shown. What would you say are their greatest visual benefits? Is there anything that stands out in this technology that you can tell us about?

Kojima: For now, FOX Engine has high performance in developing games on multiple platforms; I think that is the most prominent feature. At this point, it is not an engine that has anything particularly prominent when compared to what’s on the market. From now on, we hope to add features and functions that stand out from other engines.

PSB: Okay, PS Vita has already been revealed. Are you interested in the console? What are the features that draw your attention most to a portable device?

Kojima: As for the multitouch pad on the back of the console, I do not want to force users to use it. The PS Vita has cutting-edge technology and it’s the best there is – especially with integration with the PS3 – and I am very pleased I can offer it to users.

PSB: With the commercial success of L.A. Noire, and the return of cyberpunk with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, do you believe that there is a market for a new Snatcher game?

Kojima: L.A. Noire is a game that I really like, but unfortunately I have not played it. I think it is coming out in Japan today, so when I return, I intend to play it. This idea of an open world in 3D is very good, and I would love to do something like Snatcher, but I do not have the time or the means to do so. But if anyone else would like to develop it, I would love it.

NOTE: A few hours after this interview, Hideo Kojima, in collaboration with Suda 51 and Akira Yamaoka, announced a radio drama called “Sdatcher” based on Snatcher.

PSB: What qualities do you think a game designer needs to be hired in today’s industry?

Kojima: Right now, it’s very similar to movies: You need a lot of money. So rather than doing what you want, doing what you like, you must have a clear idea of marketing and sales. That’s what’s happening to us with FOX Engine; you do not need be an expert in programming to develop a game, but if you have a question, you still need an expert on-hand to provide an answer.

As for expression, that has reached a high level. Video games are trying to reach the peak of entertainment, so game makers should be clear that things like emotion and sound are among the many things that have to be involved.

PSB: How has your perspective from your business point of view and as a game developer changed, now that you are Vice President of Konami Digital?

Kojima: I would like to not change. My priority continues to be to create and produce my own games. Now that I can do this well, I can generate more time to help in other company products, especially in creative ways.

  • Anyone else hear that broken record?

  • @Surfaced
These games shouldn’t be on PlayStation 3.

The Sony crowd doesn’t have any history with them and won’t be able to appreciate these masterful games. They will be upset by these games, because they are unlike the Socom, Call of Duty, and Battlefield games they play all the time.

    You disappoint me, Konami.

  • Looking very forward to this one.

  • Digital-Big-Boss

Can’t wait for the ability to play MGS2 and 3 on the PSP2.
Also can’t wait to get PW on the PS3, I 100% everthing in that game from a solo stand point. I even got the Fox emblem. Now I can finally complete the co-op modes and get a real 100%

  • Huge MGS fan so obviously I’m picking this up. Interview didn’t really answer much. Guess we’ll just have to wait until the release date gets closer.

Any plans to have some MGS related avatars for sale? I’d love to have some MGS4 avatars.

    @megamixer

your post makes no sense. These games shouldn’t be on PS3??? Every MGS game has been on a Sony console excluding Ghost Babel and the two NES games.

  • I’m gonna get this for sure. I was very close to beating MGS3 after putting in SO much time in it so this’ll finally be my chance. I haven’t play MGS2 in ages since the PS2 days so this should be a nice treat to go at it again.

I’m a little disappointed with not having MGS1 in it but then again I never played Peace Walker so I’m all good with it I guess. That and each one is going to have trophies too so yes like many others, I too would love to have trophy support for MGS4. I just can’t seem to get myself to play through it again w/o any damn trophies.

  • @megamixer
MGS1 has been re-released countless times. It was even in the original MGS Collection. HD’ing a PS1 game must be more work then they care to deal with. They could’ve ported Twin Sna… *shot*

I wasn’t talking about re-releasing MGS1 since it is up on PSN which would make sense that they could’ve packed that into this MGS Collection. It was re-released plenty of times, but it has never been remastered. Wouldn’t really want them to HD’ it since you can’t make it all that pretty with the PS1 graphics they have to work with. By something special, I was talking about using Fox Engine and remastering it.

  • @Ramen_4_Life – I think we are a dying breed. Playing games for FUN is a concept that seems to be lost on most people these days.

  • Some dudes should chill out… does it really affect you that Xbox 360 users will be getting it? Does it somehow make it less of an experience because of that? No, it will still be great and more people will get a chance to experience it and they will have more money to make more games. Everyone wins!

  • Why no MGS1?

  • @Digital-Big-Boss
    “the two NES games.”
Metal Gear was released on the MSX2 well before any ports of it were made and released. Following Surfaced’s logic (or lack thereof) Metal Gear series games only belong on… get this… Microsoft systems!

“MSX was the name of a standardized home computer architecture in the 1980s conceived by Kazuhiko Nishi, then Vice-president at Microsoft Japan and Director at ASCII Corporation. It is said that Microsoft led the project as an attempt to create unified standards among hardware makers.

Before the appearance and great success of Nintendo’s Family Computer, MSX was the platform for which major Japanese game studios, such as Konami and Hudson Soft, produced their titles. The Metal Gear series was originally written for MSX hardware.”

    :D

    @Kchow23
“By something special, I was talking about using Fox Engine and remastering it.”
That would be like creating a whole new game. Far more expensive than putting out a trio of upscales.

  • Megamixer, I’m talking about the DVD+BluRay+Digital Copy bundles found at retail locations. They’re usually more than when you see just the DVD, and seem to be a little more than the cost of just a BluRay.

Is it me, or did he straight out lie in the interview about not knowing anything about the Snatcher-type game? From the update, it looks like he knew all along.

  • I’m upset that the other system got this too. Why the heck would a PSP game go to the Xbox?

  • Wait, the 360 is getting this?

Excellent, good for them. The original Xbox only got 2, not 3, and 2 was a pretty shoddy port (the opening in the rain had some horrible framerate drops, for one).

Up until now I kinda assumed this was 1-3, and was like “wtf” at Peace Walker, but really, that game is pretty much MGS5 (it was even called so in development).

As for the first game not making it on, I’m willing to bet on why: just like GoW, Sly, PoP, etc., this game won’t have brand-new character models, textures, and the like. That’s re-coding the whole game. They’ll simply up the resolution so it’s not ugly on a big television, maybe put the PS2 ones in widescreen. The first game is on PS1, there’s no saving that game without all-new assets, and it’s on the PS Store anyway. As for Xbox not getting 1, the second game has a very detailed summary for those who missed it.

I really hope for the sake of the newcomers that 3 is Subsistence, soooo much better than vanilla Snake Eater.

  • why make a collection starting from MGS2 and not MGS from psx?

  • Would you really want to see a PS1 game in HD? It would be funny, but not really worth the effort.

  • Oh, also, Twin Snakes was pretty good. I wouldn’t mind that being packaged in there (heck, make it an unlockable and a joke “what if” alternative to the original, lol).

And while I’m here, #58 is right. I agree, MGS1 needs a from-scratch overhaul, not what they’ve been doing to PS2 games.

Everyone who’s for some reason mad that the Xbox 360 just got 3 new excellent games… keep those posts coming, you’re pathetic and it’s hilarious.

  • You guys really want a trophy feature for MGS4?

I’ll go both ways here, I wouldn’t mind it, but I don’t see why to add it now.

  • The best enhancement they could do would be removing The Boss from MGS3. I despised that woman. :P

  • ThreeLeggedFreak

Wouldn’t it be cool if all PS2HD classics had the transfer functionality with Vita? RE4, MGS3, GOW2, etc all on the palm of your hand.

  • I’m really looking forward these games,I loved MGS2, now add trophy support to MGS4

  • Digital-Big-Boss

I hope getting Big Boss rank will be platinum in MGS2. I’ve done it once, I can do it again.

  • You guys really want a trophy feature for MGS4?

I’ll go both ways here, I wouldn’t mind it, but I don’t see why to add it now.

^ Add it now to give me incentive to play through it again. I’ve gotten used to putting in work in video games and bring rewarded with a fake trophy. Yes, I admit it.

  • Did anyone else see the comment where someone said they want trophy support for MGS4?

  • While I’d love trophy support for MGS4, or to squeeze a Zone of the Enders 3 out of this guy, getting to play Peace Walker with a dual shock 3 is a godsend. And, remastered versions of MGS2/3, games that don’t really need it, but hell they deserve it, is just icing on the cake.

Can’t wait! Between the ICO and MGS HD Collections, this year, my nostalgia kick will be in full swing.

  • @FORMIK
BR/DVD/DD combo packs, I’d forgotten those even existed. I never understood why they chose to throw a DVD version in those. Seems very strange to me but I’m not in marketing so I’m sure they know better. So point taken. Though they could still offer all options.

PS3 only, Vita only, PS3+Vita+PS3 DD+Vita DD, PS3 DD+Vita+Vita DD….. this is getting confusing fast!

    @JaY_Ci_415
“Add it now to give me incentive to play through it again.”
Once they have your money, they don’t care if you play it even a single time, much less multiple times.

  • Looks like I’m gonna have to hound the mgs 2, 3, and peace walker until I have the platinums!

  • Kojima keep the good work my friend, your the reason why i became video game design. After you took over the metal gear series i was blow way by your work. Its thanks to other video game company why i am working hard to writer my own video game story’s and get my own team together to design are own video games.

Thanks to video games & the designers i am CEO of my own company and working as VP for music company so i can get are own music design for are video games being made right now.

I have 7 video game idea’s and i got team of 40 people who are working on small video type for now so we can get start with some games. By later years in 2014 we should be enable to design big video game we hope to get on the PS3, PSP, PSVita, and other systems to come this year. WE all hope that Sony will show us there new top system there are not telling anyone about.

  • WHOOO MORE MGS!!!! LOVE IT!!!

  • Somebody needs to ask him why Konami left Silent HIll 4 The Room off of the HD SIlent Hill remakes, or is the SIlent Hill guy up next. The room was awesome and weird. I want to relive that in HD.

  • SONY, WHY ARE YOU IGNORING THE LACK OF CROSS GAME VOICE CHAT ON THE PS3?

  • Trophy support?

  • And “Cross-game voice chat” joins the lively discussion. I thought something was missing… sigh.

For those wondering about the Gamecube version of Metal Gear Solid, Kojima would have to work out a deal with THAT game’s developers, Silicon Knights. It’s a bit too late for that, though.

  • I don’t care what Kojima says/does, he can do me no wrong!

It’s hard to decide what is my favorite MGS moment, but I think I’ll go with the MGS4 Ending, it actually made me cry.

  • I would love to see “MGS: VR Missions” on PSN

  • LONG LIVE SNAKE!!! Im a HUGE FAN beated every single one…HD FTW

  • @Ramen_4_Life:

Thank you, for answering my question. I did not know that GameStop had set up any sort of reservation (pre-order) for this bundle yet. However, I am going to have to complain a bit. Fifty ($50.00 USD) dollars is just too much. It’s not so, much the money, but much more the “principal”. Especially considering that two of the three titles have re-released several times (half a dozen or more actually.) Other HighDefinition (remix) bundles released have sold for a lot less around thirty or forty (which is highly more reasonable.) That is my only complaint though.

    Anyway. Thank you, again.

  • Nice…add me if you want..

  • True that. I picked up the GOD and Sly Cooper ones for about $20 or so each…

  • I meant GOW….sorry.

  • MGS4 still needs trophy support!

  • I’ll gladly pick up MGS4 if it got trophies, and I will get this bundle…when its $40 or less :/ Im not exactly flowing with money lol loved Peace Walker on PSP! What happened to the ‘Only On PlayStation’ label on Peace Walker’s UMD Case? lol

Now to dig up my MGS:VR Mission disc I got at a garage sale XD

  • I still play MGO and I’m a A(1885) GG’s!

  • Ever since the GOW collection was announced I have wanted a MGS collection, I was so excited when this was finally announced, I was hoping for MGS1, 2, and 3 in HD, (perhaps substitute Twin Snakes for the original?), but Peace Walker is great as well and that’s a game I wanted on ps3 to begin with, too bad it doesnt have MGS4 graphics, but it will benefit greatly from 2 analog control. Can’t wait till this collection is released!

  • I’m glad to see Kojima interview with PS blog about this. Oh Kojima about LA Noire, That game sold in Japan like crazy (along with Infamous 2), LA Noire was the #1 top-selling game in Japan this week.

  • Digital-Big-Boss

    @Dzbwu00
    my thoughts exactly.

    @Rorek_IronBlood
50 is too much. PW should be 20 by itself plus maybe 15 for the other two. 35 would be reasonable. 50 is pushing it especially considering I already bought PW for PSP.

  • KOOOOOOOOOJJIIIIIMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
Everything Metal Gear Solid related needs to be on the PS Blog from now on! It even needs its own section on this site!!

  • THE MAIN REASON THE XBOX 360 AND XBOX LIVE KEEP KICKING SONYS ASS IN SALES AND POPULARITY?

THE LACK OF CROSS GAME VOICE CHAT AND A PARTY SYSTEM ON THE PS3!!!!!!

WHEN WILL SONY STOP IGNORING THE FACTS AND RESCUE THE PS3 FROM AN EARLY DEMISE BY IMPLEMENTING THESE MISSING CRUCIAL COMMUNITY FEATURES?

IS CROSS GAME VOICE CHAT NOT POSSIBLE ON THE PS3? WHY DON’T YOU COME CLEAN WITH THE COMMUNITY SONY AND ADDRESS THIS GIGANTIC PINK ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM?

  • November O.O awesome…. also how is this 1080p and we can’t even get the God of War Origin Collections in 1080p?
