Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for PS3

These days, Hideo Kojima is a busy man. The Metal Gear mastermind recently revealed that the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is heading to the PS3 this November. The HD Collection includes revamped versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, complete with dual-analog-stick controls, 1080p graphics, smoother frame rates, a redesigned user interface, rumble support and much more.

We caught up with Kojima last week at an appearance in Mexico City and he was eager to speak with PlayStation.Blog readers. Enjoy the Q&A, and leave your favorite Metal Gear moments in the comments!

PlayStation.Blog: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was designed for PSP — a portable device. What changes did Kojima Productions make to the upcoming PS3 version so it could be enjoyed on a high-definition home console?

Hideo Kojima, Director, Kojima Productions: The PSP obviously has fewer buttons than the PS3 controller, and it had some limitations when it comes to control. Using the DualShock 3, movement of many things improved…as did, of course, [the addition of] rumble support.

On the PSP, it was also hard to tell some textures apart. Now, rendered in HD, they are much easier to see. The in-game text is also easier to read.

PSB: Your process of “transfarring” will allow PSP players to take their Peace Walker save files from one console to another, and we will also see similar cross-play support with the PS Vita and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Is this the future of gaming, and would you like to explore beyond what already has been announced?

Kojima: Peace Walker is the first step. It is a PSP game in HD that lets one go back and forth between one PSP and a PSP. The next step is to take PS2-quality games, such as Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, to HD and then to take them to Vita transfarring.

My next step is games that will come out for the PS3 from now on, so I can take advantage of this technology with the Vita with content that is exactly the same. I hope that cloud service is available now, and it would be ideal for me if transfarring were to serve as a bridge between the two services.

PSB: Just before E3, a glimpse of what will be its new graphic engine (FOX Engine) was shown. What would you say are their greatest visual benefits? Is there anything that stands out in this technology that you can tell us about?

Kojima: For now, FOX Engine has high performance in developing games on multiple platforms; I think that is the most prominent feature. At this point, it is not an engine that has anything particularly prominent when compared to what’s on the market. From now on, we hope to add features and functions that stand out from other engines.

PSB: Okay, PS Vita has already been revealed. Are you interested in the console? What are the features that draw your attention most to a portable device?

Kojima: As for the multitouch pad on the back of the console, I do not want to force users to use it. The PS Vita has cutting-edge technology and it’s the best there is – especially with integration with the PS3 – and I am very pleased I can offer it to users.

PSB: With the commercial success of L.A. Noire, and the return of cyberpunk with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, do you believe that there is a market for a new Snatcher game?

Kojima: L.A. Noire is a game that I really like, but unfortunately I have not played it. I think it is coming out in Japan today, so when I return, I intend to play it. This idea of an open world in 3D is very good, and I would love to do something like Snatcher, but I do not have the time or the means to do so. But if anyone else would like to develop it, I would love it.

NOTE: A few hours after this interview, Hideo Kojima, in collaboration with Suda 51 and Akira Yamaoka, announced a radio drama called “Sdatcher” based on Snatcher.

PSB: What qualities do you think a game designer needs to be hired in today’s industry?

Kojima: Right now, it’s very similar to movies: You need a lot of money. So rather than doing what you want, doing what you like, you must have a clear idea of marketing and sales. That’s what’s happening to us with FOX Engine; you do not need be an expert in programming to develop a game, but if you have a question, you still need an expert on-hand to provide an answer.

As for expression, that has reached a high level. Video games are trying to reach the peak of entertainment, so game makers should be clear that things like emotion and sound are among the many things that have to be involved.

PSB: How has your perspective from your business point of view and as a game developer changed, now that you are Vice President of Konami Digital?

Kojima: I would like to not change. My priority continues to be to create and produce my own games. Now that I can do this well, I can generate more time to help in other company products, especially in creative ways.

  • Waiting for it!

  • I am wondering if mgs twin snakes is also released on ps3 …

  • @49 So? MGS 2 isn’t even a fraction of the story line from all of the the MGS titles born on the Platstation. And MGS was not always multiplat, Metal gear isn’t the same series as the Metal gear solid b4 the twin snakes spin off and that porting of mgs 2(which i don’t know why it was done) the Metal gear solid franchise was playstation.

  • @144 Dunno really but im sure Konami had that choice, even though it doesn’t make since, seeing that half the other games in the store are only a playstation platform(mgs4,portable ops, ect)

  • SOLD!!!!!!!!

  • Wasn’t Twin Snakes just a remake of MGS for the game cube? That is probably why right there, nintendon’t like to share.

  • I hope the secret theaters will still be there. 8D Like Eva’s bewbs.

  • As one of the biggest fans of MGS there is and owner of all the games (MGS for PS1, MGS2 and 3 for PS2 and MGS4 for PS3) will definitely buy this. Major thumbs up for Hideo Kojima and Konami for remembering the fans and offering us these magnificent games for the PS3 and in HD.

  • The Vita is gonna be one killer portable at launch. Picking it up launch day definetly :D

  • I was on the signig evet, and is pretty nice to see some game developers coming to my contry, wished he did some kind of keynote or showed up some new HD footage.

  • Please add support for 3DTVs!

  • As much as I love the MGS series (Own them all, even Portable Ops), I need more than just HD visuals and Dual shock controls for me to buy this. Peace Walker played just fine on the PSP so that’s no problem for me. Sure Peace Walker on a big screen would be pretty cool, but not cool enough for 50 bucks. Now if they announce Peace Walker will have PSN support with this bundle for the co-op and versus, then we will be talkin! As for the MGS4 trophies patch debate that has surfaced…again, it’s probably not going to happen guys, just forget them and go for the Big Boss emblem if you want to feel accomplished so bad.

  • seeing that my screename is MGS “metal gear solid” Null “cyborg ninja”
I have something to say about all this……………..Good job Sony the only game worth somthing on playstation makes the illest comeback…. I never played peace walker so this is a god send, however I beat mgs 1, 2, 3, 4, Acid 1, 2 and portable ops of course. No game on the market has these 3rd person controls cause they are too generic but mgs has too many buttons some say. I say suck it. Good thing X-tards get to play a real video game for once because im 2 spoiled to settle for less

  • Long live Kojima
    Long live Snake

  • If anyone here wanna get it in MGO style add me

  • Day 1 for me
and if Hitman makes a collection it can sit pretty next to my GOW and MGS collection

  • what will happen with the Metal Gear movie????

  • There better be a movie or they will lose out on a crap-load of cash….hell, Doom the game has no story-line at all and they got a movie….movie better not suck either…..Hitman got away with making a [DELETED] movie

  • @100 I’m surprised they’re in 1080p as well. Last time I heard MGS2 and MGS3 were 720p locked at 60fps and Peace Walker was 720p locked @30fps. I thought that Shadow of the Colossus and Ico were the only remakes in 1080p. Those two are also supposed have 3D, MLAA, and other features as well. Could somebody please confirm that MGS collection will indeed be in 1080p? Also @99, PS3 outsells 360 the majority of the time in every region except for America. Furthermore, those demanding cross game chat and party systems are in the loud minority. If I wanted to talk to my friend while we’re playing a different game, I’d pick up a phone or use the text chat every once in a while. Sony has already said they’re looking into it so why must I see it in the comments every unrelated article. Look at the right side of your computer next time you write a comment. “If you would like to talk something off topic, click here our forums, or here to submit a new idea.” To add to that Vita is going to have it so with all the compatibility between the systems, I woundn’t be surprised if the PS3 shared that feature and even had cross platform chat between the Vita and PS3.

  • I’m disappoint with the lack of information.

    Will there be trophy support?

If there is, will Peace Walker trophies be retroactive?
Will the original theme music be included with MGS2 and 3 (since they stopped using it after they discovered a similar sounding song by Russian composer Georgy Sviridov called Winter Road)
Will the games include the Substance/Subsistence bonuses, including the original MGS3 Online mode?
Will Transfarring allow us to import our PS2 data for the PS3 versions of the games?
Will the MGS4/Online control scheme be available, along with additional gameplay changes (mainly for MGS3) such as crouch walk, over the shoulder aiming and so on.

These are what I want answered. I already own Sons of Liberty and Substance, along with Snake Eater and Subsistence, plus Peace Walker. I do not see the need to buy these games for a third time if they are just rehashing the original titles with new graphics. My fanboy nerd love for Metal Gear Solid does have it’s limits.

  • I agree with Saberblade…..we need just a few ???’s answered I miss subsistance 3 I would hope we get that game insted of snake eater cause online was balls plus bonus vids plus camera control. There are no limits for my love 2 MGS but the fact Sony makes me buy all these games again is a slap in the face and I believe that certain classics should be entitled for backwards compatibility this being one of them…..Heres a idea……if we own the disk let us upload it and you give us the purchase on our hdd for free as a little incentive that u still care about us sony….If im loyal enough to own older games for ps2 and ps1 then I deserve a little bit of a kickback fair to say….

  • At this point XBOX is getting my exclusives sold on their system whats up with that? MGS is the reason I chose SONY….i know xbox in the past had mgs2 but if they get their hands on mgs4 then add awards to the game then sorry sony theres nothing left u have that i want except maybe a better controler lolololol….what the hell is going on with sony the only games they make now are indie psn titles……NOT BALLIN

  • @mgsnull617. MGS has never been an exclusive series, even from the very first Metal Gear game released back in 1987. The interesting thing, Metal Gear started on a home computer called the MSX, developed by Microsoft. Complaining about MGS on other consoles is like complaining about Final Fantasy on other consoles, when it started with Nintendo.

The real problem is Sony came out and said something like “our fans don’t want backwards compatibility but instead new features” when they explained why they didn’t want to put PS2 compatibility onto then newer PS3 models. Problem is, “new features” these days means minor security fixes, not one decent new feature and these games (plus other Classic HD games) shows for sure that they do want PS2 games on PS3, but they’d rather sell us games we already own in a new box.

  • thanx for the clarity bro but SONY “not ballin”

  • Will the VR missions from Substance be included in this collection?

  • OMG I WANT THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but its gonna be a pretty long time cause it will be released at november 1 maybe ill ge it for chrismas
